Today I’m rewatching some season 1…
And I am always just in awe of how they transformed Toby in one season. I mean his character and appearance.
Like in the beginning, of course they think he’s a murderer. But he’s quiet, sad, artistic, and into music. He’s also somewhat timid. Terrified of Jenna.
He’s got that mop of hair, and t shirts and jeans.
And then… like the very second that Spencer starts to quantify him as boyfriend material, he becomes bolder, more outspoken, more independent, willing to put himself on the line for her.
He gets a cleaned up hair cut, ditches the motorcycle and starts wearing his outdoorsy carpenter chic.
I remember how I felt watching this arc the first time around.
It felt to me, like “Well being myself didn’t work with Emily. Maybe if I change things up I can get Spencer to fall for me.”
And I don’t think they ever intentionally meant for it to feel that way… which I think makes it even worse to me? Like it would be one thing if Toby thought he needed to change to land a girl like Spencer, but it’s kinda sad if the show runners thought that.
“Keegan is pretty cute, and he’s got chemistry with Troian. If we’re gonna keep him on, we better clean him up. Can’t have a moody art kid playing a love interest in this show.”
