“Who cares about Mom and Dad?! They turned on you, they hurt you! And, well, you did that to me. I was your little sister. I needed you. I wanted you all those years, growing up, and you weren’t there for me. And I wondered why. But now I think I might know. I stumbled across what could be the reason for all of this.”
Not really sure if any of you are into soap operas, but something pretty big just happened on one of TV’s oldest soaps, The Bold and the Beautiful.
This is Maya Avant. She’s the lead model at Forrester Creations and is currently in a relationship with the CEO of said company, Rick Forrester. She’s a main character, and is very important to the story.
This isn’t the big news, however.
In a recent episode, Maya was reveal as being transgender. This makes her the first regular transgender character in an American daytime soap opera! This is huge for the trans community, as her story will be reaching a new group of people!
The Bold and the Beautiful recently cast trans actor Scott Turner Schofield as a friend and mentor to current character Maya Avant. Maya is a transgender woman on the show, and is played by Karla Mosley, a cis-gender woman.
Although it would have been great for the trans character to be played by a trans woman, we applaud the show formaking history by casting the first transgender actor in a major recurring role for daytime television.
“This moment is about every teacher and artist who encouraged me to act despite biased casting; each trans person and ally who attended my shows; and everyone in power who acts their beliefs in order to do something differently.”
