the best scene in the history of anything

#thankyoubones week: day 10 → 3 other favorite ships/friendships

I love every single friendship on Bones, especially since to me, they are all this huge makeshift family. But these 3 listed above are my utmost favourites. Why? I’ll tell you why:

  1. Brennan and Angela - to me, these two represent the most iconic best friends on television. Sure they are polar opposites, but they have been best friends for such a long time, and would do almost anything for the other, and I do hope to find a friendship like that myself one day.
  2. Booth and Cam - these two have had the longest friendship on the show, over 20 years worth by now, and have remained good friends after all these years. While I was never a fan of them as a couple, their friendship certainly works for me, and they incite a special nostalgic pang in my heart whenever I watch scenes of them together because I can’t help but think back of their long history with each other.
  3. Booth and Aubrey - this friendship is fairly new yes, but one that I will certainly miss dearly. Considering how Aubrey joined the team after Sweets’ death (rip dear Sweets), he has managed to earn Booth’s trust, respect and affection, and really, any scenes of them either talking about life or enjoying a meal together makes me really happy.

Is it just me that isn't devastated at the way Robert spoke to her about the abortion? Like Robert has tried being nice, saying he never intended on using her or making her feel cheap bc she's a mate. But now despite the genuine pleas to keep it quiet she is actually posing a real threat to his marriage. And not the same threat Aaron posed to him and Chrissie, because he didn't care for her. So yes he is being brutal. But he has tried to reason and explain that it was simply a drunken mistake.

i genuinely loved that scene. he was gross and vicious but when you don’t mean shit to robert, he lets you know.

i think robert always did consider her a friend, even after their history, and playing nice after The Incident was the best way to keep her quiet. but he can’t have anything ruin his marriage, so if he has to be cruel he will be. he finally drew a line and told her exactly what he thought of her, and honestly, good on him.

i’ve seen so many people compare all of this to the affair, and they’re nothing alike. during the affair he couldn’t let anyone ruin his marriage, but he still felt so much for aaron he had to find a middle ground. here, he doesn’t feel anything for rebecca, and he never has done, so he’s going to let her know exactly what he thinks.

yes, the abortion stuff was harsh and in any other context i’d want to slap him, but i didn’t feel an ounce of sympathy for her in that scene, or any scene really.

honestly, i don’t even think it was all that brutal. he’s literally pushed a woman through some floor boards, so telling someone he’ll never love them was pretty mellow for me. she got off lightly, really.

also i loved that scene because hot damn ryan hawley, hot fucking damn.

I think it would be all too easy to overlook these moments. The moments which occur as each episode fades to black. But something so incredibly (and consistently) exceptional about David and Emily is the brilliant way they can close out any scene or episode- simply by playing off the other. I have no idea how the final seconds of this scene were scripted. Or if they were even scripted at all. We already know that some directors like to take advantage of their ability to improvise banter for an extended period of time. It’s one of the things David and Emily do best. This comes from having a solid foundation and a rich history. Their chemistry has burned so brilliantly since the very beginning. We were all lucky enough to bear witness to that miracle. And the relationship that has blossomed from that chemistry, hard work, and unwavering faith in one another has created such an unparalleled and impenetrable force. Anything these two do automatically becomes amazing. Any interactions they have are pure gold for fans. Suddenly, a “fade out” moment becomes a can’t-miss moment. They are able to convey heat, humor, and love with just a few lines of banter and some tender touches. You cannot script that. I absolutely lost it when Brennan tried on the glasses and Booth had to steady her on their way to their bedroom. That’s just them. That is David and Emily. The trust, friendship and love between them is so evident. Always. In every scene- big and small. They are so comfortable with each other, and that translates so effortlessly and beautifully to their characters. I obviously always overreact to moments such as these. But I just cannot help the way these two constantly make me feel. They are once-in-a-generation costars. And I thank the universe each and every day for allowing the stars to align just perfectly, and giving these two wonderful and crazy individuals to the Bones world. We are richer for having them in our show and in our lives.

Profile: Kagari Shuusei ・縢 秀星 + Execution Record

I know Kagari’s profile was translated a long time ago, I just decided to translate it myself as well because it kinda felt incomplete without him and Masaoka so…  As they say, for the collection. XDD  Since there’s no new info, as a bonus, I added Kagari’s record from the Dominator shooting history section. It could serve as another evidence of his death.

Nigel Marvin comes to you and says "We're going to make a new WWD together." You get to pick the six episodes. GO.

Episode 1: Northwestern Argentina, Late Triassic. I’d do the earliest dinosaurs. Eoraptor, Herrerasaurus, Pisanosaurus, and of course all the other weird animals that lived at the time like Hyperodapedon, Probelesodon, Ischigualastia, Exaeretodon, and I’d probably have a Silesaurid, a “prosauropod” of some sort, and an early pterosaur - since it was still Pangaea back then, existing genera could even be used for those. All Avemetatarsalians would be floofed. The story would probably center around the Silesaurid I think - no it’s not a true Dinosaur but it is a Dinosauriform and we never talk about the weird almost dinosaurs

Episode 2: Siberia, Middle Jurassic. Kulindadromeus is decidedly the star of this one. From that specific fossil site there is also a medium sized theropod and other random Ornithischians. I’d probably have something similar to a Cetiosaurid, or a Mamenchisaurid, or a very very early sauropod to show how small and weird they were to start out with. I’d make the theropod a compsognathid, and because it’s in Siberia, everything would be fluffy except the sauropod, because cold. Maybe even a primitive thyreophoran. Kulinda’s the star though. Kind of like the Leaellynasaura in the original show - they really carried that episode mostly by themselves.

Episode 3: TENDAGURU, Late Jurassic. Everyone aaaalways does the Morrison well I’M BRINGING THE AFRICAN DINOSAURS. For sauropods I’d have Giraffatitan, Dicraeosaurus, Tornieria (yes, I’d insist on Tornieria being a dull orange color), and Tendaguria. There’d be Ostafrikasaurus, Elaphrosaurus, Ceratosaurus, and Veterupristisaurus, with the first being an example of an early Spinosaur and the last an example of an early Carcharodontosaur. Pterosaurs we’d have Tendaguripterus, Pterodactylus, and Rhamphorhynchus. Then for Ornithischians we’d have Dyslatosaurus and Kentrosaurus, and Kentrosaurus would be the focus of this one because when do we ever focus on stegosaurs oh that’s right never

Episode 4: Alright, I’m giving in and doing Early Cretaceous North America. Yeah, it’s in When Dinosaurs Roamed America, but let’s make that floof up to date. Since we haven’t focused on a sauropod, Sauroposeidon is the star. Plus, it’s a sauropod star in the Cretaceous - your average viewer wouldn’t expect that! Then we got Acrocanthosaurus, Deinonychus, Tenontosaurus, Astrodon, and honestly even though that’s all from the Antlers Formation in Oklahoma and Texas, I’d probably include some fauna from the Cloverly Formation and Cedar Mountain Formation - Sauropelta, Microvenator, Eolambia, and Falcarius. There would be appropriate floof, and there wouldn’t be any raptors just… not running away when lit on fire.

Episode 5: MIDDLE CRETACEOUS ASIA. Why? Achillobator. It’s time to give the weird giant raptor some love. Achillobator would be the focus because I recognize I had not given time yet to a theropod of any sort. Alectrosaurus, the early tyrannosaur, would also be there and would be kind of like the lion to Achillobator’s hyena, with them taking advantage of each other’s kills and stealing, but not actually fighting or anything like that. There would be a lot of therizinosaurs like Segnosaurus, and they’d also be Talarurus and Bactrosaurus and an unnamed azhdarchid (I’d probably call it Azdarcho).

Episode 6: NEMEGT FORMATION OF THE GOBI DESERT, LATE CRETACEOUS. The star? Duck Satan Deinocheirus. This also was a formation with a lot of Oviraptorosaurs, so there would be a scene where just all of them would wander by in a herd of weirdness and what the hap is fuckening - Ajancingenia, Avimimus, Elmisaurus, Conchoraptor, Nemegtomaia, Nomingia, and Rinchenia, in one of the best animated scenes of all history, a chorus of different pitched squacks (the narration at this point would need to make a comment about bird watching). There’d also be Adasaurus, Borogovia, Gurilynia, Judinornis, Teviornis, Tochisaurus, and Zanabazar, and they’d all act like birds and it would be hard to tell one apart from another, even the Avialans - they’d all look like different types of birds. Theeeen we’d have Alioramus and Tarbosaurus representing the tyrannosaurs, Therizinosaurus, Mononykus, and Gallimimus for the other Coelurosaurs; the actually decently known titanosaur Nemegtosaurus, and then Barsboldia, Prenocephale, Saurolophus, and Tarchia to represent the Ornithischians. I’m not sure what the story would be, but it would not end in the K-T Extinction.

And that’s my idea! Now I want to do this. What have you done.

The Winds of Winter was possibly the best GoT episode to date.

I honestly can’t think of another episode of the series that was so goddamn satisfying, had so many reveals, so many pay-offs, and a brilliance on narrative, technical, and musical levels. This was very much a curtain call on the second act of this sprawling play, setting up very nicely the final third act, that will comprise the (highly shortened) last two seasons.

  • R+L=J Reveal - I couldn’t ask for anything better for this. One of the most iconic and beloved sequences in the novels, it was translated to screen perfectly. Dialogue was fantastic, music was beautiful, the actress cast as Lyanna was spot-on, and the perfect editing how it cut from baby Jon to adult Jon was spectacular. Beautifully, beautifully, executed, and will definitely go down as one of the best scenes in the series’ history.
  • The King in the North - Very much an echo of Robb’s coronation, and yet so very different, under very different circumstances. I watched this particular scene about 10 times (and will watch it repeatedly) because I adore how masterfully written and shot it was. From that initial segue from the Tower, the initial arguments between the Northern Lords and the Knights of the Vale, to young Lyanna Mormont’s badass speech (there’s absolutely no one who doesn’t love this girl right now), and the Stark theme swelling up to the chants of “KING IN THE NORTH!”. I watched it with a couple friends, and we, like so many, were absolutely cheering as Jon was crowned the new King in the North, and it just goes to show how far he’s come as a character - and from death even. Here was a bastard who thought he accounted for nothing (or as Littlefinger described him, “a motherless bastard from the South”), and now he’s ruling the North, and possibly has a higher claim on the Iron Throne than his aunt, who’s setting sail for it and has her eyes on it. It’s worth noting that in the books, I recall a passage from Jon’s POV where as children, Robb and Jon would play together, and Jon would claim himself as “The Lord of Winterfell!” before Robb corrected him. It’s thus that after so long, he’s got what he always dreamed of, but never expected.
  • I especially loved how they were sure to include shots of the snow falling outside the windows of Winterfell, the most apt place in Westeros imaginable for such a coronation, really to emphasize the fact that “Winter is Coming”, and the fight is only just starting. Bravo. All hail Jon Snow, the White Wolf, the King in the North!
  • The slimy sleazeball that is Littlefinger couldn’t have been expecting Jon to be crowned King, and it’ll certainly be interesting to see how he reacts to this in Season 7. Maybe he’ll try and manipulate Sansa, to undermine the relationship between the two siblings (cousins), but Sansa, like she did today, should be able to rebuff Baelish’s machinations. The last thing we need is a civil war within the family.
  • Arya serving Frey Pies - Ridiculous teleportation devices in Westeros be damned, this was yet another fantastic cheer raising moment. Arya is back, and is definitely on a warpath - her sadistic smile was more than slightly worrying, as was Sansa’s last week after she set the dogs on Ramsay. I loved the shout out to the Rat Cook story and Wyman Manderley’s infamous Frey Pies from the novels. It does appear that Arya has taken on the role of Lady Stoneheart - which was to kill the Freys responsible for betraying Robb, and now with the Freys more or less destroyed, LSH role is pretty much over with - House Stark’s treacherous enemies are all dead, and only Cersei truly remains.
  • Mad Queen Cersei - The hints and clues leading up to the explosive finale were peppered throughout the season, and the pay off we got for them was stunning. The opening scenes of the episode could not have been more perfect. It was cinematic brilliance of the highest, highest, order. There’s hardly any dialogue spoken, and tension is raised by the beautifully eerie score’s (the track, which I just can’t praise enough, is called “The Light of the Seven”, I believe) cello, organ, and choral music. Through Lancel’s eyes, we witness Cersei’s masterplan at work, as he discovers the Wildfire caches - with just a small wick of candle keeping it from exploding. In the sept, it’s only Margaery who realizes that with Cersei’s absence, something is amiss, but it’s far too late, and in one fell swoop, Cersei has managed to eliminate all of her political rivals in King’s Landing - destroying all of House Tyrell in the process, with the exception of Olenna. Margaery, Loras, Mace Tyrell, Lancel Lannister, Kevan Lannister, the High Sparrow and his followers, along with Pycelle at a different location, were all killed in just one day. She even gets revenge on Septa Unella, subjecting her to the horrific abuse of the Mountain, something that’s properly Tywin-like in its depravity. But even Cersei’s greatest victory yet is short-lived, when Tommen commits suicide by jumping out of a window - really poetic justice when it was Jaime who shoved Bran out of one. With all 3 of her children dead, Maggy the Frog’s prophecy comes true (”gold will be their crowns, and gold will be their shrouds”), and Cersei becomes Queen of Westeros, gaining the power she’s always wanted - but losing almost everything she held dear to gain it. Since her children are gone, she really has nothing to lose at this point - leaving her free to indulge in the insanities and evil she will unleash upon the world. Even Jaime, the only person arguably in the world left she loves, is disturbed by what he sees, bringing him troubling flashbacks to Aerys’ reign. Perhaps he’ll have to kill her, fulfilling Maggy’s valonqar prophecy. Though the odds are she’ll run into Dany and her other little brother again before that. What a meeting that will turn out to be.
  • Daenerys and the Narrow Sea Crossing (at last!) - At last, at long last, after 6 seasons and 60 hours of television, and almost 20 years for book readers, we get this fantastic scene everyone’s been waiting for. I really appreciate that it took this long actually, because throughout the course of the show, we’ve seen Dany grow and change as a character - she certainly isn’t the same young girl from Season 1. She’s had glorious victories and grievous defeats, conquered cities and lost cities, loved people and lost people, and learned a great deal about the nature of people and the nature of war. She’s finally in the ideal position to invade Westeros just like Aegon did three hundred something years back, with an enormous army, a huge navy, three powerful dragons, and possibly the best advisor she could ask for in Tyrion. It was a huge moment for him as well I think, and I really appreciated the moment we saw Dany appoint him as Hand of the Queen. Throughout the books and series, Tyrion has always been ostracized by society on account of his dwarfism, and most of his family hates him. Despite that, he’s always been compassionate to those less fortunate than him, as he sees them as kindred spirits. He repays in scores the kindness people show him, like the loyalty and political prowess he proved to Dany while she was away. In joining her, he finally finds a cause that he actually believes is worth fighting for, and his relationship with her couldn’t be more different to the one he has with his biological sister, who despised him. With Dany’s military might and charisma, and Tyrion’s considerable political acumen, they’re an unstoppable force, especially in a greatly weakened King’s Landing that’s ripe for the taking. Something tells me Cersei won’t be Queen of the Seven Kingdoms for much longer.
  • One final note - we can all agree Ramin Djawadi was on fire this week. Every single scene couldn’t have been what it was without his incredible score - the mournful cello and violins in the opening, during Cersei’s bombing and later coronation, the music that played during the Tower of Joy reveal and it’s eventual segue into Jon’s coronation, and lastly, that unforgettable score set to Dany setting off into the sunset, with an army, a navy, her shrewd team of advisors, and her 3 dragons, off to conquer the Seven Kingdoms. We’re truly lucky to have him scoring the show. Give him the Emmy right now ffs.

So to briefly summarize - “The Winds of Winter” was a fine cap to a brilliant, unusually optimistic and upbeat season, that may have had a few missteps (looking at you episodes 6-8) along the way, but otherwise delivered to fans the things they’ve always wanted - action, spectacle, revelations, plot twists, and moving their characters along trajectories that are incredibly exciting for the future. To quote a wise wizard from that other famous fantasy series - “the board is set. The pieces are moving.” Winter is truly coming, and Season 7 can’t come soon enough. And now begins the painfully long wait for it. Or perhaps, if we’re really, really, REALLY lucky - Book 6. And if the story seen on television was spectacular, you can only bet the literature will be a doozy.

  • “The poor orphan who went on to save us all. So may I say– on behalf of wizarding kind– how grateful we are for your heroism. Should we bow now or will a curtsy do?” ALBUS IS SO SASSY AND BITCHY
  • Okay. I will never like that interaction where Harry wishes Albus weren’t his son. It’s wrong and I don’t think Harry would have ever said it in the first place. But I suppose it was a tense moment and it’s not like their relationship was perfect.
    • It’s sort of that stereotypical plot device. Where someone says they hate you and you shout it back even though you don’t mean it.
    • It’s still dumb. Harry Potter would never wish he didn’t have his kids.
  • Also a+ for Ginny for knowing his scar is hurting without him saying it

  • “She is full warrior now and it rather suits her” hell yeah
  • “Well, at least I’m not married to him” Snape is savage
  • “Think about those you love, think of why you’re doing this…Think about Albus. You’re giving up your kingdom for Albus, right?”
    • I’m crying
  • Well Snape is a bit ooc, isn’t he?
    • I imagine people aren’t too happy with the “every inch a hero” description…..
    • I mean I guess it is an AU of its own….hm
  • Casually watches Hermione, Ron, and Snape get their souls sucked out and die
    • Nbd
    • What the fuck.
  • “And dad. My Dad. Hi. Dad.”
  • “Hello, Scorpius”
    • I love them so much
  • “I thought Harry Potter wasn’t afraid of anything?”
    • Why does this scene remind me of The Lion King
      • Mufasa: “I’m only brave when I have to be. Simba, being brave doesn’t mean you go looking for trouble”
      • Simba: “But you’re not scared of anything”
      • Mufasa: “I was today. I thought I might lose you.”
    • Harry and Albus are Mufasa and Simba and I love it
  • Albus wants to destroy it in a new fun way
    • He really is Harry Potter’s son
  • I love that Ron and Hermione want to get married again but the drunk Ron part is…. Weird
  • Draco and Harry out to find their sons yesss
  • I can’t believe how upset I am that she killed Craig? I love Craig.
  • His weakness is the same as his father’s: friendship
    • Ok but Albus is gay so
  • Scorpius logicing prophesies I am in love
  • Harry not being able to speak Parsletongue after Voldemort’s death always saddened me so I’m glad it made an appearance
  • “Draco walks up to the stage beside Ginny. This is almost a Spartacus moment. There are gasps”
    • Ginny Draco Harry Dream Team
    • Can that be a thing from now on
    • Awkwardly bringing Draco into the Family Fold and him fitting in surprisingly well
  • “Hello Mr. Muggle”
    • Have I told you Scorpius is my favorite yet
  • “Not to question your taste in women, but you fancied…well…”
  • Why does Scorpius know more about Harry Potter than Albus Potter
  • What an important conversation between Harry and Dumbledore
  • Draco wanted to be a quidditch player
    • And Harry beat him there, too
    • I’m so sad
  • Draco isn’t good at small talk, we all know
  • “It is exceptionally lonely, being Draco Malfoy”
  • “Draco looks up at Harry and for the first time…they look at each other as friends”
  • Draco giving up the chance to see Astoria again for his son and Harry’s son!!!!!!!!
    • And the future of the world
    • I’m
  • “As pleasurable as it will be to hide in a hole with you for forty years…”
  • “Still, if I had to choose a companion to be at the return of eternal darkness with, I’d choose you.”
  • “No offense, but I’d choose someone massive and really good at magic”
  • “Malfoy, you may be all chummy chummy with Harry”
    • You bet your ass he is
  • Awkward Malfoy Hugs
    • They need Practice
  • This book made me ship Ginny and Harry and that’s an accomplishment
    • I’m not happy with Harry being Voldemort
    • But he asked Ginny’s permission and wouldn’t have if she hadn’t approved!!
    • Because he realizes how traumatic it will be for her to see Harry as Voldemort
  • Draco Malfoy enjoys being bossed around by Hermione Granger spread the word
    • Scorpius like Dad plz no
  • Everyone watching Voldemort kill James and Lily….. ))))):
  • All that and we get back to the present….and more heterosexuality……. :/
    • It’s like they forgot Rose existed and had to remind everyone that her only reason for existing was for Scorpius to be Straight, too
  • Harry Potter knowing what he said was unforgettable but willing to work on their relationship from them on out
  • Harry Potter being scared of the dark, and small spaces and pigeons
    • Me too

Things I’m most annoyed with:

  • The entire Delphi plot
    • To make up a character just seems…strange since the rest of the play is dealing with characters that are otherwise existent
    • And making her that ~silver haired older woman~ is just weird OC shit
    • also no one cares that much about Cedric Diggory I’m sorry
      • like the only person I’d believe is Cho Chang or Harry
  • The Heterosexuality
    • Two boys (11-14 years old) grow closer and profess their loyalty and have some seriously confession-style conversations only for it to get harshly interrupted by gross jokes about Albus liking older women and Scorpius liking a girl who has never given him the time of day
    • The queerbaiting in the subtext and the queerbaiting by JK Rowling liking Scorbus tweets………I’m Over It
    • 3 generations of Straights (no, Dumbledore doesn’t count, fuck that) can u believe it
  • Rose Granger-Weasley
    • Turns her back on Albus because…..popularity????????????
    • I thought she’d be way more involved and friends with the boys in a Golden Trio part 2 sort of way but she was barely there
    • I guess they could have made up for it in that last year when she tried to make nice with Albus but he denied her
    • But I don’t really blame him
    • Again, her only existence was to make Scorpius straight
    • She had no other purpose
    • I thought she’d be the fun third in their trio and set them right when they were being dumb but no
    • Delphi was for some damn reason

Overall rating: 6/10

Fun while it existed in its own bubble, still very annoyed w/ the above listed things. I think the characters were handled surprisingly well, but they of course had their moments when it felt OOC (it’s 19+ years later and it’s not written by JK, so.) The plot is over-dramatic and could have been avoided entirely but I imagine it’s better on stage than written down, though I think the dialogue is great. I quoted it many times. Still don’t think of it as canon but I’m sure there will be certain aspects that I see sneaking into fanfiction from here on out that includes CC stuff because some of it was p good.

Conclusion: someone go re-write this. Re-write it better. Send me a link. Make it Scorbus. Thank you and goodnight.

InNoirguration Day Films

Tomorrow is the start of the San Francisco Noir City festival, so I will be submerging myself in fictional cynicism and fatalistic tragedy to counter the real world’s upcoming cynicism and fatalistic tragedy.  Care to join me?  For anyone stuck at home wanting to do something other than fret about the next four years, here’s a lits of some of my favorite noir movies available online, and where you can watch them.

Note: I can’t guarantee these won’t all be taken down within the next hour.  Streaming platforms are like that.

Don’t Bother to Knock: A very young Marilyn Monroe is basically Cute Girl Norman Bates.  While things obviously turn violent, it’s still a much more sensitive exploration of mental illness than you’ll typically find in films of that era.

Laura: A murder mystery with one of the best possible twists.  The author meant the book as a feminist statement, and it shows through in the film adaptation.  Fans of Twin Peaks should especially watch this!

Sunset Boulevard:  The biggest, lushest, most grotesque imaginable gothic tragedy set against the glamour of classic Hollywood.  No one ever leaves a star.

Available for Free (legitimately)  Those with a star are also currently up on Amazon Prime

Too Late for Tears*: A brutal, mean-spirited femme fatale story.  You will fall in (terrified) love with Lizabeth Scott.

The Hitch-Hiker*: Scarier than many films actually marketed as horror, this is also known as the only classic noir directed by a woman (frequent noir actress and producer Ida Lupino.)

Woman on the Run*: A noir-tinged tour of San Francisco with a female protagonist and a twist I never saw coming.

Kansas City Confidential*: Great heist action.  Root for the crooks and their meticulous scheme, or root for the Iwo Jima veteran they picked for a fall guy and his revenge.

Detour: This film boasts possibly the best female villain in all noir.  She’s no seductress, just a woman with a will of iron and a heart filled with pure hatred.

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers: I’ll advocate for watching almost anything with Barbara Stanwyck, and this is no exception.  The Art of Noir describes this movie as having one of the bleakest death scenes in cinematic history, and they aren’t kidding.

Ace in the Hole: Some noirs have heroic protagonists and uplifting endings.  Not this one.  Holy hell, not this one.

The Big Combo*:  Come for the adorable gay henchmen couple, stay for the in-depth exploration of the tragic plight of gangster molls.

Scarlet Street*:  How do you have a criminal escape the law and still satisfy the Hayes Code as being sufficiently punished?  Watch this and find out, especially if you’re a fan of the ending of American Psycho.

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is proud to present its first official poster art for TCAF 2016, from the incredibly talented KATE BEATON!

Kate has created something really special here, showcasing the many different ways that readers and fans enter and interact with the medium of comics. This poster will also be produced on a slightly thicker and more rigid paper stock, so that any of you our there that want to actually cut up and play with your poster will be able to do so. Look for it this spring!

Our thanks to Kate Beaton for turning in a phenomenal poster that embodies a lot of what we love about comics.

Kate Beaton is a Canadian cartoonist who appeared in the comics scene in 2007 with her online comics strip Hark! A Vagrant! Since then, she has become a fan favourite and has garnered a significant following, with comics & illustrations appearing in places like the New Yorker, Harper’s, and Marvel’s Strange Tales anthology. Her collection,Never Learn Anything from History, is published by Topatoco, and her next title, Hark! A Vagrant published by Drawn & Quarterly, spent five months on the New York Times bestseller list, and topped best of the year lists from Time, E!, Amazon, and Publishers Weekly. Beaton’s cartoons often display a wonderfully light touch on historical and literary topics. The jokes are a knowing look at history through a very modern perspective, and a campaign against anyone with the idea that history is boring. In 2015, Kate released Step Aside, Pops with D+Q, as well as her first children’s book, The Princess and the Pony, with Scholastic.

anonymous asked:

pleaseeeee help me, I have horrible study habits and I don't understand how to take notes for different classes. how did you learn how to take notes, study, and use a planner? could you possibly do like a step by step guide when taking notes for different subjects.

For Notetaking:

It’s best to find the style you like most. Personally I think variety is best and that several different types of note taking is better.

Ways to write notes:

  • Simple Paragraphs
  • Flashcards
  • Mindmaps
  • Diagrams
  • Flow Charts
  • Post it Notes

Using Things Online:

  • Microsoft Word:
I know this is obvious but if you have a version that has the notebook format it may be useful. I used this to make a Summary of my Government & Politics course as revision.
It’s very good if you find that lists and bullet points help you
  • Mindmup:
This is great for mind maps, which you can apply to almost anything, and mind maps are good for laying out your notes into categories rather than into a massive paragraph.
  • Brainscape
  • I used this a lot in my GCSEs. It is for making flashcards and it is available as an app on mobiles. To use it well, when you first have a lesson on a subject, make flashcards on the topic. Then whenever you have little bits of free time, waiting in queues, train journeys or when you are separated from your books or a full on study session is too much, you can study using the questions.
  • Memrise
Memrise is similar to Brainscape, but I prefer this for definitions. Brainscape is good for both definitions and questions, however Memrise is better for definitions and bad for questions. It’s also good if you don’t have the time to make a course, as plenty are already available.
  • Evernote
Is a simple way of organising your notes, into notebooks and note pages. It’s good if you just want simple typed up notes that you can access online rather than in a real notebook.

Taking Notes for Different Classes:

Maths or any subjects that are most application of knowledge:

In Maths your focus is mainly a few facts but mostly involves a lot of application of knowledge.

  1. When you are in a lesson, write a list of topics and questions you will need as you go through as a reference for later.
  2. Also write any key equations that you know you will need, as a reference for in your lesson.
  3. Focus less on taking your notes and more on trying to understand. Most teachers will give more explanation than the textbook or online.
  4. After the lesson, look back at what you did in the lesson.
  5. Then write up your more formal notes, using your classwork, textbook examples and online videos.
  6. If you live in the UK Examsolutions is a good revision and explanation site.
  7. For certain things that are clear step by step methods, i.e.: solving quadratics, finding the equation of a line,  then you can write these out on a small flashcard.

English, Religious studies, Social Studies or anything which involves reading and analysing sources:

  1. With your source, make sure you read all of it! I know it’s obvious but I remember writing an essay about Of Mice and Men without knowing the ending of the book.
  2. In shorter texts, such as a news article, first of all go through and highlight the text. Whilst doing this, make a page of notes on all the key points.
  3. After you’ve highlighted, put these into an organised form, paragraphs, lists or mind maps.
  4. For longer texts, read through it outside of your lesson. In your lesson, you’ll probably be given ideas of the key moments in the texts and the core themes of the book.
  5. After you know the key ideas, use any textbooks, youtube videos or websites like Sparknotes to get more references and to build up your notes.
  6. For English Literature, it’s a great idea to colour code, even more than other topics. This helps you to organise the characters, themes or scenes, whatever suits you best.
  7. In subjects like Religious Studies, Politics or History where you sometimes need to remember the dates or references,  i.e.: The HRA was passed in 1998, highlight these dates. This can also be done for page numbers in books. Highlight them by Underlining, italics, colours, highlighters capitals, post it notes, or copying in your margin again.
  8. Overall with subjects like this, the best practice is reading and writing, through reading other sources, reading your notes, writing your notes and answering questions.

Chemistry, Physics or anything that is a mix of application and fact recall:

  1. For these subjects, it’s a mixture of both methods really. Like Maths, you should try to listen and understand in lessons rather than take all your notes. You probably won’t have time to write them all down.
  2. For the factual aspect, use flashcards for remembering the definitions of key words and key concepts i.e.: momentum is always conserved
  3. Also when you are writing your notes, the facts should take priority. A lot of your revision involves remembering these, looking at notes for application of knowledge is not as effective. Put the facts in post its, boxes, underlining and bold colours.
  4. For the application, use lots of past papers. Putting questions and past papers in your folder is useful. For some things, i.e.: balancing a formula, nothing but practice can help you to learn it.
  5. However you will need a reference if you forget the steps you take. For writing these out, use your knowledge from lessons, the textbook and youtube videos.

Biology, Psychology or anything that involves a lot of fact memorising with a little application:

  1. Although being able to take lots of notes in a lesson is admirable, it is practically impossible to do and have neat notes. The best option is to quickly take your notes in lesson.
  2. When taking these notes, try to think about the things that are being said, rather than just copying off the board.
  3. Also remove all the fluff from what is written and said, shorten your notes into simpler sentences or even just the key words and ideas. It doesn’t matter if you wouldn’t understand in 3 months.
  4. You only need it to make sense for a few hours- days, as you should rewrite your notes out after the lesson. For fact based subjects, its a good way of covering everything in one go. It also often leaves you with very neat notes.
  5. When you are rewriting your notes, add to them using textbooks, books, online notes and videos. There will be things you missed or your teacher missed.
  6. Also write down anything you have forgotten or don’t understand. This can make a revision list that you can study from at the weekend, highlighting the problems you have.
  7. For your definitions, using flashcards and questions is a fast way of memorising. You can do it in small bits of time.
  8. If you have big paragraphs or pages filled with writing, try to break it up. Add lines in between, titles, diagrams or even just changing the way you write, from italic to straight or in capitals. This will make it easier to read later on and less daunting.

Planner Advice:

  1. Write all your lessons for that day in your planner
  2. Then leave spaces for free periods and after you finish lessons
  3. Put in any other events you have
  4. When you go to each lesson, write what assignments you got in that lesson, as well as the subject you learnt in the lesson.
  5. On the day that your assignment is due, write in a bold colour the homework that you were set.
  6. If you have a long project, separate it into small tasks and set your own personal due date for each one.
  7. As you go through the day, you’ll have a list of things to revise.
  8. That night revise from the list of thins you learnt today and do any work.
  9. At the bottom of each page, put in any important notes that you cannot forget.
  10. If you don’t like a day to day planner, you can put a day to day checklist.
  11. Each day add the tasks you need to do, then tick them off as you do them.
  12. Some tasks may run on for ages.
  13. Alternatively, you could do Bullet Journalling- just google search it.

I would add photos, but tumblr only lets me add one.

Sorry about my disappearance since this questions arrival, but I wish you luck with your studies!

anonymous asked:

Did you hear that YsbaddadenTheBrave was driven out of the fandom over death threats? :\

So I’m combining your asks together, because while they’re slightly different I don’t like cluttering up my dash with drama (and I’m pretty sure the “events” you’re talking about are the same thing).

To the first anon, regarding YsbaddenTheBrave: no, I didn’t know they were driven out of the Star Wars fandom over death threats (but I was just informed on the details). I don’t think we ever talked, and tbh I don’t know if they were following me (I’m pretty sure I wasn’t following them). The name sounds vaguely familiar, though.

To both of you (and to all my followers/lurkers): I know there’s drama going on with the antis right now. I know, as a few posts about the incident made it onto my dash last night. I also know the antis are reading the things I write, lurking all over my blog. I know they’re taking screenshots and reposting my posts to complain about me and my followers without confronting me directly (did you really think I wouldn’t notice, btw). I also know they’re trying to bait me through anon asks (try harder, I can tell you’re antis by the way that you talk). I know they’re being generally unpleasant, to everyone. I literally couldn’t care less.

I couldn’t care less what the antis think or how much they scream, because I curate like a pro (see: relatively drama-free dash). I also don’t have time to deal with them. I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll say it again: the Star Wars fandom is massive. The Star Wars fandom is a lumbering, unstoppable behemoth – THE Juggernaut of pop culture – and antis are a specific subculture specific to tumblr. They are a FRACTION of the whole Star Wars fandom, at best, and they are utterly meaningless to The Collective Fans™ at large. Star Wars and Star Wars: The Fandom were around long before they arrived on the scene, and they will be around long after they leave it. These are people who saw the movie, and only the movie – who have no understanding of Star Wars EU or the history behind it – and decided that because Kylo was popular they had to hate on him (and anything to do with him, including Reylo). These antis have no sway in the real world, or even in other online spaces, and to be honest the idea that these pseudo-scavengers are sending “death threats” is kind of laughable.

I mean that’s what they are, in every sense of the word. You guys know that, right? There’s a very, very good reason why these antis are trying to pick on you – why they’re targeting fans who just want to write a lil’ bit of Reylo – and that’s because they think you’re easy targets. That’s because they would literally lose this fight with anyone else in the Star Wars fandom, at large. If the antis tried this with Reddit – or god forbid, 4chan – they’d be dragged so hard they would never, ever recover from it, and they know it. These antis are people who are powerless in real life, and because they can’t hold their own weight online either, they go after people who are emotionally compromised. They go after people who can’t fight back. They’re bullies – really weak bullies – and scavengers don’t got the spine to go through with death threats. Like I’ve dealt with real predators before – people who can seriously do you harm – and if I thought the antis could, you can guarantee I’d be documenting EVERYTHING and turning it over to the police. But these people can’t. Their hate is meaningless, and you should ignore them.

Now I know not all of you can ignore these people as easily as I do. I get that, because my skin’s literally as thick as a shark’s, and I’ve been through the ringer before. It takes time to build up a resistance to things like these. But here are some Ohtze Guaranteed Steps to make your tumblr experience drama-free, for those of you who need it:

  • Turn off anon asks/reviews/submissions, both on here and on your fanfiction profile (if you’re on something like Scavengers are cowards, and 9-times-out-of-10 they will send their hate anonymously. They don’t have the guts to stand by their words. If you take away the power of their anonymity (which is the only power they have), most antis won’t try anything. If they do msg you off anon, you can block/report them.
  • Block people from your blog. As I always say, there’s intent – what you plan to put into your work – and then there’s reception TO that intent, and you have no control over the latter. So you can’t really control what people say or do after the fact. That said, if you’ve got anti’s lurking your blog, hijacking your posts and spewing general hate, you can block them from your tumblr, and I recommend doing so. Here, this is how to do it (sorry @little-scribblers-heart, I’m not blocking you but I’mma gonna use you as an example, because you’re the first one I recognize and you’re a champ).

Here is your activity feed: you can see who’s reblogged you, who’s liked one of your posts, who’s followed you, etc. On the far right side of each “note,” you’ll see a little icon next to the post (signifying what kind of post it is).

Mouse over that icon: an ‘x’ should appear. (scribbler is ALSO NOT into the breeding kink, folks: that was an anti-breeder post, so don’t go spamming her either).

Click on that ‘x,’ and this screen will pop up:

Voila. You have just blocked someone from commenting, following, or viewing your blog. Congratulations.

  • Curate your dashboard. Curate it like a pro, so you don’t have to search the actual tags (and see people posting hate). The way I curate (specific to Star Wars) is I follow a bunch of BNFs (Big Name Fandom creators), general content aggregators, and a couple randoms I find really cool (who have the potential to do a lot more). The rest of my dash is NOT devoted to Star Wars, and if people start posting too much drama, I cull them. Tailor your tumblr experience, people: you can do it. You don’t have to subject yourself to their hate. It’s not hard.
  • Finally: remember that the Star Wars fandom is much, much bigger than tumblr, and INFINITELY bigger than the “anti” phenomena, specifically. They have no power over Star Wars, and therefore have no power over you.

ANYWAYS. That’s my opinion on the recent drama, and tips for staying positive/getting on with life. Remember: it’s always dinosaur day in Ohtze land. I’ve got lots of em, and I’ll share my dinos with you, too.

I find it a little pathetic that WestAllen shippers had to hijack my Relationship VS Friendship post.

I made a post about Barry and Caitlin being such great friends and sometimes how that’s more important than having a relationship.

The response from WA shippers? That Iris West is his best friend. I’m sorry, but that’s such utter bullshit. These idiots are so greedy for everything that they can’t even allow us to make a friendship post without saying that it’s something that belongs to WestAllen as well.

I’m sorry, but Barry and Caitlin interact more as friends in two or three episodes than Barry and Iris have in the entire season combined. Because of all the secrets and lies and Barry’s confession, Barry and Iris are no longer best friends.

Yes Barry and Iris have history, they grew up together, but we’ve only seen small snippets of that history. On the actual show, you know the thing we’re watching, Barry and Caitlin spend waaaaaaay more time with each other than Barry and Iris.

And only a small chunk of that is even because of work. Most of the time they’re just talking and laughing and being there for each other.

WA shippers are so GREEDY, that anything related to Barry doesn’t matter unless Iris is involved. Nevermind the fact that Barry and Caitlin have more scenes together even outside of their job than Barry and Iris have the entire season.

Who does Barry go to about problems in his personal life? Caitlin. Who has he leaned on the most during his more emotional moments? Caitlin. Who does Barry spend more time with than anyone else on the show? Caitlin.

But to WA shippers, none of that matters because of reasons that only need to make sense to them.

I swear to you, sometimes I actually hope they respond to one of my posts so that I can reinforce all of the reasons why I think the haters in their fandom are scumbags.

  • His fried fuckin hair is the real joke.
  • THAT FOOD BUFFET THOUGH. My sister and I canNOT eat anything similar to jello without making fun of Lexie shaking.
  • “Unless the figured out how to open doors” WHICH BRINGS ME TO POSSIBLY THE BEST SCENE IN MOVIE HISTORY. Raptors vs Kids. This shit is so good I was so FREAKED as a kid when bitch ass Timmy wouldn’t crawl and a raptor would pop her head up  and the raptor claw tapping on the tile and tricking the raptors like WHO’S THE CLEVER GIRL NOW I will love this scene till I die
  • “It’s a unit system I know this.” Lexie rebooting the system and Alan and Ellie barricading the door and Timmy jumping around like an ABSOLUTE ASSHATE BEHIND LEX LIKE YEAH YOUR SASS ISN’T GONNA SAVE US IS IT
  • Being cornered by the raptors and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad visit to Jurassic Park
  • And then the movie ends with the theme and cut to me in tears Jurassic Park is the best, I love every single second of this film I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU EVEN HAD TO ASK WHY IT WAS SO GREAT BUT HERE’S YOUR ANSWER MY BUDDY MY PAL

Alec: You think Lydia is destroying this family? Not the fact that you were in the Circle?
Robert: You know?
Alec: What did you think, I’d never find out? All these years, you never said anything.
Robert: We couldn’t.
Alec: Is that the best you can do? You drilled into me that I was never good enough.
Robert: It wasn’t that. We wanted you to be better than we were.
Alec: You wanted to sweep history under the rug. You wanted us to save you, restore the Lightwood name.
Robert: Alec, you’re making a mistake.
Alec: No, I’m gonna fix what you broke. And I’m gonna do it on my terms.

This scene was so, so good, Matthew and Paulino Nunes were so good. The emotions on Robert’s face, the anger and resentment in Alec’s voice. I was indifferent to Robert in the books, I hated the “a thousand papercuts” feeling he made Alec feel but we never really got more from him other than his own parabatai had feelings for him and Alec being gay was a reminded of that. It wasn’t enough. But look at his face, they way he tries to talk but doesn’t? Robert may be a dick and places too much on his children’s shoulders (or at leasts doesn’t resist when wife does) but it’s clear he loves Alec here. I prefer this Robert to the books and I can’t wait for more, I can’t wait to find out whether I should hate him or be disappointed in him or maybe even like him. A mix of the three? We need more! (Plus, I love love love Paulino Nunes from Bitten!)

Sageuk genre isn’t the friendliest in regards to bed scenes - they often tone it down as much as they can - sometimes it’s so subtle that you realize that the couple slept together only once you learn the girl is pregnant. In most sageuk, a hand touch alone is enough. Although, the cable stations are not as restricted as the 3 big networks. However, there are some exceptions.

Actually, probaly the steamiest and best bed scene in kdrama history actually OCCURED IN A SAGEUK - JANG OK JUNG ‘LIVE IN LOVE’ (it even included a beautiful “after-lovemaking” scene) - if we get anything close to this I will be forever happy (AND JUDGING BY THE SPOILER PHOTOS I THINK WE WILL!!!).

The “after-lovemaking” scene

The Magnificent Seven (2016) Review

The Magnificent Seven is a western-action movie directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring an ensemble cast of Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'onofrio, Lee Byung-Hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Haley Bennett and Peter Sarsgaard.

The movie is a remake of the 1960 version, which itself is a remake of the Akira Kurosawa masterpiece, Seven Samurai. The story is simple and straightforward, a group of seven gunslingers get together in the old west to protect a small town from a greedy baron. Simple, basic western premise. But that is not a problem, this is what you would expect from this kind of genre, you don’t need anything original.

However, you do need good action, and Antoine Fuqua really knows how to direct some spectacular scenes. Without giving too much away, the third act of this movie, in which they fight for the town, is one of the best action scenes in western history. It is truly beautiful and entertaining. It’s great too see how each of the seven shows off their skills, and how each in part try to teach the townsfolk to protect themselves.

A major positive for this movie, which is also a minus in my opinion, is the diversity of the cast. It’s great to see a really diverse group of main characters, but unfortunately, the movie sometimes presents them in a stereotypical manner. But it is a major improvement for Hollywood, nonetheless. The characters who get most characterization are Denzel Washington’s and Ethan Hawke’s, a character that’s very different from most, a man who actually suffers from PTSD from all the killings. It was really interesting to see that.

At the end of the day you start wondering if we really needed this movie, since the story has been told many times before, and while some might say we don’t, I have to say I had a lot of fun with this movie. It does have some character problems, but the action is amazing and a lot of fun. I give The Magnificent Seven a 7 out of 10.

ok loved the update but now i’m also really sad because B. Shitty-feminist-ally-Knight would never ask jack about a girlfriend if he knew anything about jack’s sexuality/history.

Like I am honestly having a hard time processing the scene because I don’t really see Shitty cornering Jack, who has always been so private and intrinsic, and demanding to know about a girlfriend, so what this says to me is that shitty doesn’t really know ANYTHING. As in, Jack never told him anything. I’ve always (blindly) assumed that jack talked to shitty about things? that shitty was his best friend at samwell and that they had some heart to heart chats about everything–Jack’s anxiety, Kent, shitty’s family– the works.

And like….. it makes me so sad to realize that Jack never really had *anyone* to talk to about stuff. Or perhaps he never thought he could talk to anyone about this kind of thing. And it means so much now that he’s opening himself up to eric and finally getting the happiness he deserves

honestly I don’t know where i’m going with this but I’m a big mixture of sad and happy about this update and I hope jack is doing ok because I love him a lot.

Don’t let that scene change your mind about anything Stydia. Stiles is going through a lot, I mean he ‘broke up’ with his best friend, something that has never happened on the history of teen wolf! He killed Donovan. His dad almost died. He was right about Theo all along. I think he’s just in a paralyzed state of emotion right now…which explains why he SEEMED he wasn’t upset about Lydia being in Eichen! He doesn’t know what to do! He’s numb, guys! And slowly getting things right with Scott is when he’ll start to thaw…do not fear!

And give the boy a moment to catch his breath!
