The Ballad of Shovels and Rope (2014)

The Ballad of Shovels and Rope Teaser

Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent are my favorite couple in the world. They’re adorable, talented and basically the nicest people possible. As a solo artist, Cary Ann is extremely talented: Hell’s Bells being one of my favorites (yep, Michael is also the man in that video. They melt my heart) Trent is formerly the lead singer of the Films who I adored in college. ’Come on’ and ‘Black Shoes’ were my anthems. (The line “it was a god-awful scene/at the bar down on King” still makes me nostalgic for King Street in Charleston.) The EP versions of these songs were perfect: raw, voice-cracking, hard-rocking songs; but I think they lost some of their magic in the over-polished album versions. The EP versions remain some of my all-time favorite songs in the world…but I digress. Anyway, now Cary Ann and Michael are married and play together as Shovels and Rope. Today I found out that they have an upcoming documentary. I will be watching it.

Cary Ann is a firecracker; I don’t know how else to describe her.
