the awkward pause

Random Headcanon: The bit where character A walks into a room and finds character B entangled in some utterly ludicrous situation, and after a long, awkward pause, B calmly states “okay, I can explain” is a popular trope in both human and Vulcan comedy, albeit for totally different reasons.

no offense but if rosa does get to be canonically bisexual and gets a girlfriend it would be amazing for so many reasons but it would be especially amazing because stephanie beatriz is actually bisexual and my heart is just racing at the thought of having an actual bi woman bring a bi female character to life in the most humbling and respectful and humanizing way… aka no awkward pauses or weird smiles, no shuffling around the subject of a gay kiss…. god i wish we could get this

  • Bruce: I am vengeance
  • Bruce: I am the night

“Um, so, my kids know very little about Supernatural. They– hold on just, um. We have these little figurines. We have big dolls…”

Dean being hit by a love spell, and seeing Cas first - and falling for him, magically.

And Sam’s ready to hold his brother back from any embarrassing behaviour, anything he’ll regret later - but Dean handles it like a pro. He keeps his hands to himself - barely pats Cas on the shoulder to say goodnight, barely says a word out of place, as they sit in the bunker and try to figure out how to break the spell. There’s a feeling, sometimes, when Dean looks at Cas… a feeling of something deep moving beneath the surface, of a powerful emotion - but Dean keeps it perfectly in check.

“How are you doing that?” Sam says. “Is it a weak spell?”

Dean, jaw clenched - fire in his blood, burning alive - shakes his head slowly. “It’s strong,” he says. I’ve got practice, he almost adds.

Cas comes to see him that night, late. Dean’s awake, of course, researching in his room, laptop glowing brightly. He jerks his head up sharply when Cas knocks at the door, always alert.

“Cas,” Dean says. “Come in.”

“You’re sure? With the spell, it won’t be too…” Cas pauses, awkward. Dean shakes his head.

“It’s alright,” he says - and then makes the first and only mistake that the spell pushes out of him. “I’m used to it,” he adds.

They both pause. Dean stares at Cas in a kind of paralysed silence - unable to believe that now, now, after all these years of quietness, he has twisted a little of his feelings into words.

“I would ask you how it feels,” Cas says, eventually. He’s standing half-inside the door, tense. “But I believe I know already.”

There’s a moment of utter noiselessness - but to Dean, to Cas, it’s the loudest few seconds of their lives. Understanding crashes into them both; without words, louder than words, with eyes alone, they tell each other everything.

It turns out, the only thing needed to break the spell is a single kiss.

They make sure the spell is completely broken, though, by not leaving it at one.

Surprise, It’s A Baby!

(( OOC: Lily played by: @potterdeer ))

Remus: *rolls eyes* It doesn’t have to be Christmas to have a party. *awkward pause* … But in all seriousness Lily…

Lily: Well… *turns to James*

Lily: And… er…I’m glad you’re sitting down. *pauses, fidgeting nervously*  … Mind handing me your wand?

Sirius: … Well that’s… interesting?

Lily: Thank you… *takes a deep breath* … James…

James: *stutters* Oh… oh my god!

Lily: Well… Yes… But- Merlin, how do I say this?

Lily: There’s a father… for this baby…

“You bake when you’re stressed and sometimes you give me cookies, but recently you’re giving me whole baskets each day, now I’m not complaining but are you okay?” au sterek? <3

OK, I wrote you a quick little thing. :)

now also on ao3

*

When Derek shows up at Stiles’ back door that morning with a basket full of about three dozen cookies, all carefully iced to look like Batman and Spider-Man, Stiles doesn’t say anything. He just gets up from the kitchen table and opens the screen door, and then he looks down at the basket for a long, long moment, and then he rubs the heels of his hands into his eyes and groans.

He looks kind of… unkempt. He’s wearing the same sweatpants and lacrosse hoodie he’d had on two days ago when Derek saw him at his mailbox, and his hair is sticking up everywhere, and it’s obvious he hasn’t shaved in a while because there’s some actual stubble there. Derek didn’t think Stiles was even capable of facial hair. It only adds to his attractiveness, but still, Derek can’t help but be concerned.

Derek doesn’t usually start conversations, but today he feels like making an exception. “Are you okay? This is a lot more baking than usual, even for you.”

“What? What do you mean?” Stiles says, dropping his hands to his sides. His face cycles through about five or six different expressions before settling on something that’s probably trying to say “innocent and oblivious,” but… well. Derek might not know Stiles that well, but he knows Stiles is definitely not either of those things, ever.

“The cookies,” Derek says slowly. “That you leave on my doorstep a few times a week while I’m out on my morning run.”

Stiles glares down at the cookies Derek’s holding like they’ve betrayed him.

“We don’t talk about it,” Derek says slowly, unsure, “but I thought you knew that I knew it was you. I mean, no one else in the neighborhood even talks to me.”

FACTS ABOUT CONNOR MURPHY (spoilers)

So I have decided to post all the facts and hints about Connor Murphy’s past that are shown in the musical. It’s hard to make out considering people in the fandom usually focus on the lies Evan tells to figure out Connor’s personality.

To get this conclusion (which I will post in a second) I literally skipped all scenes concerning Evan’s lies and went directly to the Murphy family and what they say. None of these facts/hints involve what Evan said about Connor.

First of all, I’ll say now that I have put my own interpretation on each of these facts.

And so, I will put all FACTS in BOLD.
Anything out of bold is my own interpretation and how I see it to be. It’s up to you to agree with me or disagree.

First, I will post my conclusions on each family member, and then afterwards, I will post the reasons for each one.

Zoe

Zoe was an emotional and verbal abuse victim. There is no evidence of physical abuse, although there were threats that could have potentially led to that. She has all the right to not grieve over Connor, in all honesty, she could have sent him to the police for what he did, but as an abuse victim, that is very hard to do. Connor was probably the cause of most of her insecurities and she hated him for that. The unhealthy habit of taking out his anger on the nearest person to him probably made him lash out at his sister whenever he had a panic attack. Judging by how he really did care enough to keep the creepy letter about his sister, written by Evan, in his pocket for 3 days before he committed suicide, it’s safe to say that he really regretted being mean to his sister and actually cared about her.

Connor’s mom, Cynthia

Connor’s mom was a woman obsessed with reputation. She’s known as the rich man’s wife, and wants more than anything to be a regular family. But because her son had mental illnesses, her perfect image was ruined. She acted as though she was there for him but when it came down to it, she did nothing. She pushed for therapy but after a while, her husband took him out of it because “it wasn’t worth the money,” and she basically went, “welp, I tried.” I will quote what I say later: Connor’s mom might not actually be sad that her son is gone, but rather, she’s ashamed that her family actually doesn’t care. It seems like Connor’s mom is filled with regret for not being there for her son, and she’s forcing her family to act like they regretted it too, because that’s what a real family should have been like. But this is only a personal theory.

Connor’s dad, Larry

Connor’s dad might be one of the main sources of his depression. It is very obvious to me that Connor’s dad believed him to be a disappointment. He didn’t grieve for his dead son and only played along to make his wife happy. He’s annoyed by the whole situation. It even seemed like he hated the fact that there was fake remnants of his son in Evan. Almost like he wished Connor wasn’t friends with Evan so he could just forget all about him and not need to deal with it. At some point he was a kind father. When they went to the orchard together for picnics, it seems like they were a happy family. Connor’s dad had played with their toy plane together and had some great memories. The whole family practically forgot about this, though. Connor’s dad didn’t cry at his own dead son’s funeral. I think that sums it up.

Connor Murphy

Connor was a complicated person. He had many different mental illnesses. I could research which ones he probably had, but there’s probably already a post somewhere on it already. One thing for sure, is that he was unstable. He might not have been like that his whole life, but at the time of knowing him, the time he was briefly alive in the show, he was incredibly unstable. Everything and anything could set him off, and he probably hated that about himself as well. Pushing away everyone near him that could possibly help and hating himself for doing so, spiraling himself into a closed minded world of self-hate and regret, which is something that many people can relate to, including me. He did a lot of horrible things to his sister and to his family. I don’t blame his family for not actually grieving him, he was a really bad person. The problem is, he could have been a good person as well. He had all the potential to get better. He talked to Evan, probably wishing to say sorry about pushing him earlier in the hall. He was trying, he wanted to try. He wanted to get better. He just gave up too soon.

This post is very long! I’m sorry. If you’d like to read more, I’m putting the reasons I’ve come to these conclusions under the cut.

Remember, ALL FACTS ARE IN BOLD. Anything else is my personal interpretation.

Starting College or University

1. Money will likely be in short supply. You’ll find a student loan doesn’t stretch very far.

2. It’s likely that you’ll feel a bit homesick at first, but for most individuals that doesn’t last too long. Just throw yourself into the activities around you and try to avoid any visits home.

3. Your first week of classes will be a huge let down. They’re usually uninspiring – but get better with time. Expect to do a lot of work on your own as you don’t get taught at university. (They just spew out information and facts).

4. When you first meet your room-mates or the others in your class, expect long pauses and awkward silences. You will still be total strangers with no knowledge of each other – but that will pass in a day or two.

5. Your old friends will change as you’re all on different paths - so you’re bound to have fewer things in common now.

6. Romantic relationships will need a lot more work if one of you moves when you start studying. Also, distance relationships can be hard to maintain so think about whether the relationship should end.

The Wrong Number

Jensen Ackles x Reader

Summary : you accidentally texted the wrong person one night who happens to be a major celebrity. And from that day on, you two can’t seem to stop talking to each other.

Read Part One Here

A/N : SO many of you asked for a part two, so here it is!! I hope you all enjoy!!

Warning ; language?

Work had been such a pain in the ass this entire week. You were exhausted and annoyed, and part of you wanted to quit.

But it was your dream. Even if you were playing as assistant for now, you knew it would all be worth it in the end.

Luckily you had someone to keep you from going crazy.

Jensen had texted you almost every single day since you had accidentally texted him instead of your best friend, Bonnie.

He was the only thing that you looked forward too. Which you weren’t sure if that was a good or bad thing.

Having someone to vent too, talk to about anything and not feel judged. It was beyond the best feeling in the world. It almost felt like you had known him forever.

But tonight, you two planned to finally FaceTime each other.

No more hiding behind texts.

You were kind of nervous, but also excited. To talk to the actor you had crushed on forever. It all felt so surreal.

Laying in bed, you saw your phone light up and his name appear on the screen. Immediately your stomac fluttered.

“You got this.” You whispered to yourself.

You gently pressed the green button answer the call, and breathed in a sharp breath.

Once the picture cleared, and you were finally able to see his face, you Felt like you were on cloud nine.

Jensen had a big smile on his face, as he looked at his screen. There you were on his phone. No longer a still picture that he looked at almost everyday. You were mesmerizing to say the least, breath taking.

He was excited and nervous about this moment since you agreed to FaceTime the night before. It was the only thing he could think about, which kept messing him up during his scenes.

“Your voice is a lot higher than I imagined.” You chuckled. “I guess I was expecting Dean’s voice.”

Jensen belted out into laughter, his head cocking back. Once he was able to compose himself, he cleared his throat. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” He said, making his voice low.

After a while, you both went back and forth for what seemed like an eternity. He talked about his life as an actor and how much he enjoyed it. And you talked about your life.

There was never a dull moment which was weird since you were used to those awkward pauses and short conversations with the guys you dated.

“Okay-” you said, laying on your side as you plopped your phone down beside you, with a pillow holding it up so you didn’t have to use your hand. “What’s your favorite prank you’ve done on set?”

Jensen purses his lips and thought just for a second before remembering the craziest thing he had done.

“Well this one time, Jared and I wanted to mess with the new guy, which in this case was misha.” He said. “Well while he was taking a shower in his trailer, Jared and I snuck in, took all of his clothes and towels and left an elephant g-string. Let’s just say, he wasn’t too thrilled.”

“Oh my god.” You laughed so hard, your entire body was shaking. Your stomach constricted and you couldn’t stop.

Jensen watched you through his screen, admiring the pure sound of your laughter. He decided to take a screenshot, to remember this moment forever.

“Oh my god!” You said once again. “I can only imagine what he looked like.”

“Yeah–"he chuckled. “Wasn’t a pretty sight.”
Jensen leaned back in his chair, and rubbed his eyes as he yawned. Tilting his head back.

“Tired, old man?” You teased.
He returned his gaze back to his screen, and flashed a smirk. “Just a little.”

“I can go so you can get some sleep.”

Jensen sighed, wishing to see you in person. To feel you and actually meet you. It’s only been two weeks, but it’s been the best two weeks of his life. No one has ever made him feel the way you made him feel. It was strange.
He didn’t want to hang up, let alone stop talking to you. If he could, he would stay on the phone forever.

“Not yet.” He said. “I don’t want to say bye yet.”
Your lips curved into a soft smile, feeling your stomach flutter.

“Me neither.” You muttered.

Jensen walked over to his bed, and laid down. His body resting into the mattress.

This was the moment he was going to cherish forever. The first night you two actually spoke to each other, and it was everything he imagined and more.

“Comfortable?” You asked.

He smiled. “Yeah, feels good to finally lay in bed.”

“I know what you mean.” You chuckled. “I look forward to it every day.”

“Well now you have something else to look forward too.” He said.

You cocked your brow, intrigued by his statement. “Oh yeah? What else do I have to look forward too?”

“Me.”

So as you guys might know my family and I have been house hunting and I have taken the liberty to make all the calls and what not for my mom because she barely understands phones and honestly she has enough on her plate buutttt oh my gawd multiple phone calls everyday with complete strangers is so exhausting and terrifying ahhhhhh

[during the cave scene]

Katara: I’m sorry I reacted the way I did… You’re from the Fire Nation…

Zuko: Oh, well, I’m not with the Fire Nation anymore; it’s just me.

Katara: [sympathetically] Just you? Just you, how could that be?

Zuko: Well, I- I was the Fire Nation prince, but they kicked me out.

Katara: Why?

Zuko: Ah, well, you know how sometimes there’ll be a pack of coyote-hawks that are feasting on a rabbit-lizard, and there’s always one small, runt of a coyote-hawk that’s being kept from the meal?

Katara: [understandingly] Yes.

Zuko: I’m like the rabbit-lizard.

[long, awkward pause]

Katara: …Oh.

Superfamily Thing

Dad and pops were fighting again.

They had been for at least a week now. Peter was used to the occasional blowup for a night, maybe two, before they got all stupidly sappy with one another again.
This was new. Scary.

They avoided each other in the day and screamed at each other in the night when they thought he was asleep. Pops had been sleeping in the spare room for at least six of the seven nights it had been going on for. Dinner time had become a nightmare; Uncle Clint having to swap seats so he was sat in between them and prevent another fight from springing up while they ate.

He didn’t want them to split up. Divorced parents were a pain in the ass, according to the girl who sat next to him in math class. She was always talking about what a hassle it was, moving all her stuff from one house to another every weekend.

And it meant one of them would have to leave. Move out. Get a new life and a new partner and maybe even a new kid-

But Peter really didn’t want to think about that.

Today was the fifth day of Peter coming home to see only one of his parents in the kitchen, where there should usually be two. They tended to hang around, waiting for him in order to ambush him and ask questions about his day. Their latest fad was ‘so how was Wade today?’ or something along those lines, in that stupid sing-song voice that adults always did when they were being dicks.

It had been irritating- but Peter wouldn’t have minded now. If it meant they’d been doing it together, sending stupid smirky grins toward one another or just holding hands at the table rather than looking cold and tired- he wouldn’t have minded at all.

Today it was dad who greeted him. He was sat with a coffee in hand and tablet in the other, idly tapping at the keys and trying to keep his eyes open. Peter knew he hadn’t been sleeping well- it wasn’t exactly hard to tell. And although they never spoke to him about what they did with the avengers, Peter could guess that that had been the trigger for all the stupidity lately.

He didn’t have to be the genius he was in order to figure that out. Pops hadn’t come back from the mission two Fridays ago; they’d hurried him off to hospital instead. And then three days later, once he’d been given the all-clear, dad had brought him home, where they’d proceeded to have  a huge argument. Right in front of Peter.

Honestly, he’d just wanted to be able to sit with pops and make sure he was okay- let him stroke his hair and quiet his worries and say how tough he was, that he wouldn’t go down that easy. But instead he’d had to be hurried away by Uncle bruce, who was rolling his eyes and apologizing on behalf of them, saying that he’d be able to talk to his pops soon, but it wasn’t a good time right now.

Peter had scowled, told Uncle Bruce moodily ‘I’m thirteen, not an idiot- I know that’, and then slammed up to his room to wait it out. And, of course, Pops had hobbled up eventually; sitting on the bed with him and assuring him he was okay, he was tough as nails, and he would always, always come home to Peter.

Except he’d been alone. and usually, no matter how mad they were at each other, Pops and Dad had always talked to Peter about this together.

That had been the first warning. From then on, it had seemed things just got progressively worse.

“Hey squirt- how was school?” Dad asked, when Peter dropped his bag and began making his way into the kitchen in order to make himself a bowl of cereal (he was a growing boy, okay, shut up, cereal in the afternoon was perfectly fine, his Uncle Clint did it all the time).

he shrugged. “Eh- it was okay. Boring, as usual; they gave us a test, I aced it, again, as usual,” Peter explained, carefully avoiding the fact that they’d been learning about The Battle of New York in lesson that day. He knew it was a touchy subject for his dad, and he didn’t want to risk upsetting him.

Dad raised an eyebrow, taking a sip from his coffee and watching Peter with a look on his face. Peter just sighed. He knew what was coming.

“So how was Waaade?

He sighed. “Ugh, Wade was fine, he smiled at me while i passed on the corridors today and that was literally all that happened. I honestly don’t know why you’re making such a big deal out of this, he called me cute once-”

“Once is enough,” his dad shrugged bemusedly, poking Peter in the side as he walked around the table to sit next to him and get to work on his snack.

“That is not a snack, Peter,” dad said, because unfortunately he was good at reading Peter’s mind like that. “That’s like, a full meal. We’re having dinner in an hour, are you serious-”

“School is hard work,” Peter complained, flopping on to the stool and leaning on his dad’s shoulder theatrically, “It drains me of energy that I need to replenish with Lucky Charms.”

“Natasha will blow her top if she sees you eating that- it’s her turn to cook tonight. And if she chooses to murder you for eating beforehand, then there isn’t much I can do. I know you’re my son, but the whole parent-bond thing only goes so far-”

Peter bumped him on the shoulder and he laughed quietly. It was nice to see the tension ease off his face a little.

Of course, then everything went wrong again.

“Hey Peter, didn’t know you’d be back so ear- oh,” his Pops said, entering the room and faltering when he saw Dad already sat at the table.

There was an awkward pause. Peter guessed they must have got the days wrong for which one of them was going to go and talk to him about his school day.
That tended to happen when they didn’t actually speak to one another and acted like they were Peter’s Goddamn age.

Pops managed to collect himself, though- walking forward and smiling as he reached out to squeeze Peter’s shoulder, before heading to the cupboards and grabbing a mug. “You had a good day today?”

Peter shrugged, wishing it didn’t feel as tense as it did. Why the hell did parents have to argue anyway? It was stupid. They were being stupid, and Peter just wanted them to kiss and make up already- because that’s what they did, that’s what they always did, right? This wasn’t going to last, it couldn’t- Peter didn’t want to have two homes, he didn’t want Dad to marry someone else or Pops to have different kids-

It was only then that he realised Dad and Pops had moved, resting a hand on each shoulder while he leaned forward on to the table and hid his crumpled face in the crook of his arms.

“Peter! Hey, baby, what’s happened, did something go down at school-”

“Do we need to go in, because we’ll go in, okay- whatever’s wrong, we’ll sort it out. Are you being bullied?”

“Did someone hurt you?”

“Did you have an argument with your friends?”

“Were y-”

“IT’S YOU TWO!” Peter yelled, jerking upward again and throwing his hands in the air. “God, this is the first time you’ve been this close to each other in ages! I haven’t seen you look each other in the eye when you’re around one another except to argue! Why the hell are you both being so stupid? I don’t…I don’t want you to get divorced! But you will and then you’ll both find stupid new people and have stupid new lives and leave me behind and we won’t be a family any more and I don’t want that so just STOP FIGHTING!”

He didn’t stop to listen to whatever stupid crap they tried to throw at him; instead kicking the chair he was sat on over and storming out of the room angrily, ignoring their calls and running up into his room before they could bother him.

That ADHD feel when someone asks you a really simple question about yourself and your stupid hell brain immediately forgets the answer, so there’s this awkward pause while you try to remember your own goddamn birthday or how your day has been. Bonus points if you’re in a session with your psychologist and they ask what you want to talk about today and you automatically forget everything that has happened to you since your last appointment, so you both just sit there in silence.
