What’s your favorite Skull Island scene?
While the image of Kong may always be connected to the Empire State Building sequence, I prefer the other core piece of Kong imagery: Fighting a T. rex or some analog to it.
And really, it’s the genesis of the entire franchise. The creation of King Kong is the story of a man with a dream. A dream of “How cool would it be if we could all watch a gorilla beat up a komodo dragon?” that grew into something more grandiose and less screwed up and animal abuse-y.
Kong may generally be a monster with no fancy tricks beyond being huge and strong, but I feel like his distinctive talent, his atomic breath or rocket frisbee flight, is being a “Professional Dinosaur Puncher ™”.
And while Kong: Skull Island won’t have any true dinosaurs in it, the Skull Crawlers are a perfectly fine substitute and arguably one that goes full circle. If you really look at that design, it’s not just a beefed up version of the two headed lizard. Look at that long skull and serpentine body. It’s almost like what would happen if Mosasaurs decided to recolonize the land. And the closest modern day cousins to the Mosasaurs? Komodo Dragons.
