the art of smile and nod

“hello,” the dark lord said, “i need a library card.”

“everyone needs a library card,” the librarian said brightly, sliding a form across the desk. “fill this out.”

the dark lord produced her own elaborately plumed quill from the depths of her robes and scrawled her name in handwriting that was completely illegible but seemed to whisper the secrets of the dark from the blinding white page. “yes, but i need mine in order to take over the tri-kingdom area.”

the librarian’s polite smile barely faltered. “funny, the last dark lord to try that didn’t bother with a card.”

“yes, and do you see that fool currently ruling our kingdom? no. of course not. utterly ridiculous, to attempt to take over any size country without a library card, much less an intermediate-sized one like this.” she accepted the thin plastic card with a gracious flourish of her gloved hand.

the librarian, adding the new card’s number to the database, privately agreed, but chose not to say anything.

the librarian balanced the pile of pulled books under one elbow and held the list of call numbers in their hand for easy consultation. “intermediate spell casting for grades three and four,” they murmured, running fingers along the peeling spines until they found it. “willing to bet that’s sorrel’s request.”

they fit the large, paperbound book under their elbow and moved on, checking the list again. “magical creatures encyclopedia, L through M. that’s jackaby trying to finish the entire set by midsummer.” they would get that one last to carry it around the shortest amount of time.

“next — the complete guide to raising the dead.” they paused in front of the row of shelves with the right call numbers. they could guess the requester of that one too, but knew better than to say it out loud.

the return slot thunked loudly as it swung open and closed, having swallowed the returned books with a wet gulp.

“good morning,” the dark lord said pleasantly as she looked up from sliding her books in — or as pleasantly as “good morning” could sound when it was uttered by a voice that sounded like gravel being chewed to pieces by the jaws of a large monster.

“it is, very,” the librarian said crisply, conjuring a clean handkerchief for the still-slobbering return slot.

the mouth just visible under the dark lord’s enormous cloak hood curved into a scythe’s blade smile, but she said nothing else.

“did you enjoy your books?” the librarian asked, since she wasn’t moving and there were no other people waiting (most likely because of the dark lord standing there).

the hood nodded up and down. “extremely. especially the taped lecture by doctor dramidius ardorius of the dark arts institute.”

“well, we have many more taped lectures. i especially recommend the one on the healing powers of tea.” they tilted their head in a now get out sign. the poor steam-powered self-checkout contraption would get overheated if people were too scared to check out at the front desk.

they didn’t really expect the dark lord to take the recommendation seriously, but the next day they noticed the cloaked, hooded specter glide out the door with the taped lecture on magic-infused herbal teas tucked between a CD of dark chants and a step-by-step art book on drawing occult symbols.

“you give good recommendations,” the dark lord said with a shrug when the librarian raised their eyes from the front desk’s computer to the shadows of her hood.

the librarian wasn’t sure what to say. “you seem to take up quite a lot of my time.”

“i’m only a simple library patron,” the dark lord replied in a saintly voice that resembled a dragon coughing up a partially digested house. “do you enjoy mermaid song?”

“yes. you can find the library’s collection in the CD section over there.” they looked pointedly back down at the computer.

“i hear there’s a concert on the shore tomorrow evening.”

“perhaps we’ll get a recording of it.”

the dark lord continued taking out books on various unsavory topics. the librarian continued suggesting books on healing, positive thinking, and community service. the dark lord seemed more amused with each visit. her smile was almost charming, once you got past the long, sharp teeth.

the librarian was trying to go about their usual morning ritual of pulling books that had been requested the night before, but the dark lord wouldn’t stop making faces at them from behind gaps in the shelves. she seemed to find it hilarious. the librarian hadn’t decided yet if they were amused or annoyed.

“ooh, look at this,” the dark lord said, pulling a sturdy but beaten up board book featuring a werewolf mid-transformation on the cover from the shelf. “this was my favorite when i was just a little menace.”

“somehow i’m not surprised.”

the dark lord tucked the book into the ridiculous basket made of a large skull that floated alongside her. “didn’t you have a favorite picture book when you were little?”

“Barker the Sentient Book End,” the librarian said promptly. “i screamed for it every night until someone read it to me, long after i’d already memorized each page.”

the dark lord cooed, sounding like a cross between an owl and something eating an owl. “adorable. i knew you had a little monster in you somewhere.”

the librarian crossly debated denying being a monster at all or pointing out they had actual kraken blood in them.

they should have guessed how close the dark lord was from how good her mood was, but it wasn’t until they arrived at work on monday that the librarian heard the news.

“the newest dark lord managed to overthrow the faeyrie monarchy last night. something about combining traditional herbal spells with a newfangled mental magic based on the power of willful thinking… or something. the news reporter mentioned the use of mermaid song in a mild kind of mind control, i think? i wasn’t listening. the good news is, our budget stays in place.”

the librarian contemplated hurling the can of bookmarks across the room, but concluded that it would be both unprofessional and unsatisfying. they settled for aggressively stamping returned, only slightly saliva-covered books with red ink.

the phone clicked loudly. “public library, how can i help you?”

“by taking my offer,” the dark lord said, slightly hesitant voice like a rock slide that wasn’t sure it was ready to slide. “the royal library in the capital needs a new head librarian.”

“why’s that?” the librarian spun in their new swivel chair, tangling the phone cord while they were at it, thinking they wouldn’t want to leave so soon after getting it.

there was a cough like the ocean spitting out a new island. “erm, hmm, last one got… eaten. tragic. these things happen when you’re very, very small, you know.”

“so i’ve heard.” the librarian stretched the phone cord and watched it bounce back. “well, i’m happy where i am.”

“well.” her voice was more disappointed than they’d expected. “it’s a very nice library, you know. large selection of mermaid song in the CD section.”

“the royal library is part of our system. i can request any materials from there that i want to be delivered here.”

a pause. the dark lord had not considered this. “well, maybe i’ll take the royal library out of the system.”

“you wouldn’t dare disrupt the workings of our very intricate library system set up at the dawn of time.”

“maybe i would!”

“no.”

“fine. i wouldn’t.”

the librarian swiveled some more, wrapping the cord around with them until it ran out of give and spun them in the other direction. “would you like to grab a coffee sometime?”

“yes,” the dark lord said, voice too surprised to resemble anything in particular. “i can travel down meet you tomorrow morning.”

“don’t you have things to do?”

they could sense the shrug from the other end of the line. “i’ll move the capital to your town. i can do that, you know. i’m the supreme ruler of the tri-kingdom area.”

“yes,” the librarian agreed, un-spinning to return the phone to its cradle. “just don’t forget who gave you the library card.”

Art School Stereotypes I’ve observed*

Animation

  • N e r d s
  • Unhealthily obsessed with video games, anime, Disney, or some sick combination of the three
  • One of the most sleep-deprived majors, but also surprisingly chipper (there are exceptions)
  • Instantly recognizable by their triforce t-shirts or Pokemon Go snapbacks
  • In spite of everything, they have the highest population of straight-edge asexuals
  • If you weren’t straight edge and celibate before, then prepare to be, because you’re about to disown all bodily urges and dedicate your life to drawing cartoon animals

Illustration

  • Like Animation majors, but cooler and much better taste in fashion. A little less tech-savvy, though
  • Comic book nerds

Painting & Drawing

  • A friend of mine once said, “People who love animation go into animation. Then they realize it’s a ton of work and switch to illustration. Then they realize THAT’S a ton of work and switch into Painting & Drawing.”
  • Highest percentage of colorful hair and weird tattoos/piercings
  • grunge
  • Listen to music you’ve never heard of
  • Smoke a LOT, asthmatics beware

Ceramics

  • Kinda stereotypical stoners or high level artsy kids, but not that pretentious
  • Somehow even more conceptual and indie than P&D
  • Behind the ceramics building, there’s a sculpture garden of all the sculptures of students past. Every night, the campus closes at 4AM. They say it’s for security, but I say it’s because the sculptures all come to life at that point. I mean, think about it. The whole “spooky midnight hour” is so cliche, I don’t know anyone who DOESN’T stay up till midnight at least once a week. But 4AM? That’s the true witching hour. The hour that belongs only to the living sculptures (and architecture majors I guess)

Glass

  • Frankly, the least hygienic major
  • All the males and most of the females have a rank odor after being sweatily hunched over the steaming hot forges for too long
  • Might be stoners, but the chill, easy-to-hang-out-with stoners
  • Probably the most like a real family. I always walk by the Glass Studio at night and feel the breeze of warm air from their fire, catch a riff of tasteful classic rock, and hear the echoes of genuine laughter from within. It must be nice to have a home.

Jewelry

  • I dunno, I’ve never met one. They put on some sick gallery shows, though.

Graphic Design

  • In spite of Graphic Design as an art not being super emotional or indie compared to, say, Painting, the GD majors are probably some of the most tortured souls I’ve met
  • I used to be best friends/date a GD major and watched before my eyes as she was crushed by the world around her from Freshman to Junior year. Honestly I’m not sure if she still goes here. We don’t talk anymore, it’s too painful. I miss her, or rather, I miss the person she used to be. The person she used to be before Graphic Design.
  • I’m now roommates with a poor little GD Freshman, and I worry about her every day. Not as a lover like with the last one, but as a parent. What will happen to her? How long will she last? Cheyenne, if you’re reading this, run away while you still can.
  • Gets excited about fonts and kerning.
  • I don’t really know what kerning is.

Photography

  • Outdoorsy and nature loving hippies
  • The chillest major, I envy them
  • Photography IS hard work, don’t get me wrong, but come ON! You travel to a beautiful mountain spring, snap a few pictures, and call it a day
  • Never need to pull all-nighters
  • Seriously, I deeply respect Photography as an art and all BUT

Film

  • Some of them are also outdoorsy and nature loving hippies, the rest are hipSTERS
  • “I don’t watch ‘movies.’ I watch Films.
  • Apparently they have something of a drug problem, i.e., half the class comes in stoned
  • My friend Chris said one of the film teachers plays Porno he made in class, I’m not sure if he was messing with me or not

Architecture

  • Oh boy, Architecture
  • The coldest hearts of any major
  • The only nice Architecture majors are the first years. After that last final, something inside of them breaks. At that point they either crawl to a different major in submission, or become as sharp, straight, and lifeless as the buildings which they spend so much time designing
  • They literally do not sleep
  • Seriously, I was pulling an all-nighter last week (since the Architecture place is the only place open 24/7) and I swear to god there was an entire CLASSFULL of the Architects up and jamming from 10pm to 7am. I tried to sleep, but the Architecture majors just wouldn’t quit. Also, it was so cold there. So cold. Cold from the hearts of fifth-year Architects. I’m bringing my winter backpacking sleeping bag next time.

Industrial Design

  • Mostly foreign exchange students, especially Chinese, Indian, and Korean
  • I don’t speak Chinese, Indian, OR Korean so I can’t say much else
  • Vaguely like Architecture majors, only they appear to have a normal spectrum of human emotions

Interactive Design

  • What is Interactive Design? Honestly I don’t really know. Like making Apps or some shmuck.
  • Tech
  • Graphic Designers who love themselves

Fashion

  • Mostly female
  • Obviously they’re very very VERY nicely dressed
  • Calm, confident, but also have fun sides

Textiles

  • Most of the textiles students I’ve met are just stop-motion loving Animators
  • I think the ones that aren’t are probably like grandmas that love knitting or something

Furniture

  • Honestly I didn’t know this was a major until like last semester
  • The only furniture major I’ve met was this Norwegian dude who looked like a greek god
  • We were once assigned to do a group project together but then he blew me off to go surfing so I had to do it myself. Seriously? Surfing???? Like I’d be mad but that’s a cool reason to blow someone off. Hell, I’d blow people off surfing if I had the easy life of a non-animation-major

Writing

  • “We have a writing program?”
  • They’re cool though
  • Get really excited about books. I’ve read only about three or four books so I kind of just smile and nod while they talk
  • Seem genuinely interested in other people’s stories

Community Art

  • I’m not entirely sure what this is
  • Passionate about social justice and teamwork

Disclaimer: No offense to any of them (except architecture majors)

*At California College of the Arts from my relativley limited perspective as an animation major who frankly has only had minimal interactions with the others

Four standard assumptions of perfectly competitive models – One. Economies of scale are… small relative… to the size of the… market. Two. Output… is homogenous. Three. Information… is… soft- and… fluffy. Four. I want to marry you… sweet, cuddly turtle-bunny-cushion. Something hits the elbow you’re leaning your head upon and you shoot up, slightly panicking. Shit. You had fallen asleep. It was only for a minute; you defend yourself in your mind. Nobody saw you, right?

You lift your hands to rub your eyes but stop yourself in the nick of time. You have almost forgotten that you are wearing black eyeliner and mascara. Thank God you remembered just in time – It would have been a catastrophe if you didn’t.

You look around, pinching your eyes a few times instead and examining the endless array of tables that is populated with college students and their college books, notebooks, markers and pencils. During the exam periods, it’s difficult to find a spot left empty. Outside the College library, there’s typically a line of students waiting to claim a seat, even at this unholy hour of nine pm.

“Are you nearly done?” she spoke, fingers reaching out to touch your waist. She’s warm, and it feels very sweet  when she presses a kiss to your bare shoulder, worn sweater of hers hanging off your frame. It’s the warmest feeling, her arms wrapping around your waist. Her sweater was given to you when she was in college. A small liberal art school on the coast, her fingers drumming on the counter top.

You stir the spaghetti, and you smile, nodding.

“It’s almost done, babe.” she laughs, looking at you with honest to god heart eyes.

“Look at us,” she laughed, taking a sip of the Welch’s grape juice you’d poured in wine glasses, glasses you’d bought to celebrate your first home together. “We’re fucking saps.” she smiled at you, and you swore to god that you could melt, between the cracks of the hardwood you stood on.

Home is the perfect word to describe this girl, and this place you’ve moved into. It’s tiny and the AC is awful and her clothes don’t have enough room but she’s here. She’s here and she looks like an angel, hair tossed up in a bun and a silly smile on her lips.

She’s here and she is so beautiful, the kind of beautiful you could wait your whole life and still never see. She is the kind of blessing that all those nights wondering if this, liking who you do and loving who you love was worth it, she’s the kind of blessing that makes your heart scream yes, of course.

“Stirring spaghetti and playing shitty music from 2009, we’re such rom com princesses.” you quip back. She rolled her eyes and grabbed your hand, and a spike of worry shot up in your tummy because there was a roll in the oven.

But a beautiful woman had just grabbed your hand and you weren’t about to say no because of a fucking roll. Incidentally, she’d pulled you to an empty floor surrounded by boxes, laying down and looking up at the ceiling.

There’s plastic night light stars for kids stuck on the ceiling. It’s not glowing because the lights are on. The spaghetti smells lovely.

You’re lying down, and you turn to your side and press your face into her neck.

“We’re really doing it, huh?” she whispered. Her family hadn’t loved it, the idea of doing it when you did, and your family wasn’t huge on it because she’s… not a guy.

But you get up to put the spaghetti on plates and your favorite movie is playing on an ipad propped up on a box, and life feels good.

The ipad is all her eyes are trained on, and you look at her, you look and look and look and you still don’t get tired of it because she’s lovely, because she’s brilliantly gorgeous and lovely in a way you’ve always been in awe of.

“See something you like?” she says cheekily.

“Nope,” you smiled, turning to her, and kissing her, slowly and feeling her smile into it, “Something I love.”

Summer in New York had never been more depressing. Or hot. Every step outside seems to melt the flesh from your bones, every memory you had of him peeled another layer off your heart. It had been three months of pure hell and although the heat made the thought of being close to anyone impossibly unbearable, you’d give anything to hold him in your arms again. But he had cheated on you, left you, and the best thing to do was move on. Or at least try.

The weather forecast predicted a humid rain, clouds shrouding the ominous sky and a layer of mystery covering the roof of your new home. Or the new home you’d be sharing with four other people. This is supposed to be the city of new beginnings and independent lives. Where one can explore themselves through the city. But sadly, as a transferred college student, the only thing you could afford was a share house in the middle of Brooklyn.

Sucking in a deep breath, you grunt while lugging your large suitcase and duffel up the short set of stairs, banging on the door somewhat gracefully with your elbow. Almost immediately, as if you’d been waited upon, the door unlatches and an older, thinner woman appears. Her skin is somewhere between tan and gold, wrinkle lines around her eyes and mouth. The hair atop her head is swirled into an artful bun, small wisps of white-gray hair escaping the masterpiece.

“Just on time,” her voice is sweet, slow, and welcoming, stepping aside and waving you in.

So let’s see :
- Only Makoto seems to study here.
- Only Makoto has a jacket on him.
- Haru is sleeping in front of him.

My conclusion?

MAKOTO WAS STUDYING HARD AND LATE SO HE FELL ASLEEP AND HARU FOUND HIM HERE SO HE PUT GENTLY HIS JACKET ON HIM AND SAT IN FRONT OF HIM, WATCHING HIM SLEEP WITH A TENDER SMILE, AND ENDED UP TO FALL ASLEEP AS WELL

True facts *nod nod*

Okay let’s get some really late korrasami week stuff going. When they’re married I’m picturing korra “dragging” Asami on tons of picnics and she would sip her wine while korra rambles about how one cloud looks like naga or a rock she had seen last week. And asami would just nod and hum and smile about how adorable it is because even though she sounds like a little kid, it shows how, after everything she’s been through, she’s still her Korra.

Hopefully some better quality pieces will come out of these prompts…. they’ll get done! Slowly but surely, they get done! I promise!!!!! >:))))))

Satisfied

Viktor had a relationship once- why not? He’s hot and people confuse him and his usage of mascara- when he was young. The details are blurry to Viktor these days, but he was too excited and he was delusional with the prospect of love back then, almost a cringe worthy moment for Viktor when he remembers these things late at night.

It was how you would imagine it. Viktor, looking back on it now, wondered how seemingly enthusiastic he managed to be in the two year long crusty ‘relationship’ they had. There were these little sprinkles of affection, shy blushes and the kind of exploration young crazy teenagers do during their young crazy lives, but there was nothing special about it.

He was an art major. Viktor figured they were compatible, two pieces of puzzles sliding together in delusional harmony, with Viktor’s artistry out on the ice and his on his canvas.

What made him special, amongst the other folders of exes he had locked away in a metaphorical file cabinet, was the fact that he was the one who stayed the longest.

Viktor was a fucking whirlwind. Nobody could keep up his tiresome training schedules, his absent meals, the long hours spent at the rink. His ex wrung it out as far as possible, trying hard to be understanding and patient at first, until finally, he broke.

“You’re… You’re too much.” He finally hisses after another failed date night. Viktor doesn’t have the heart to deny the statement. “You’re fucking selfish. You… You revolve around nothing but the ice! No hobbies, no ambitions, nothing but that stupid gold fucking medal you always win anyways.”

Viktor doesn’t flinch, doesn’t feel anything at all. He was right. He was right.

“And then what? What happens when your body tires out, huh Viktor? What happens if you lose?” He says, there are tears brimming his eyes. Viktor doesn’t have the heart to well up a tear. “I tell you, you’ll regret it. You will have nothing.”

When he walks out the door, Viktor realized that he had nothing the whole time Not even the satisfaction of being complete.

When Chris asks him if he had any plans to get into a relationship anytime soon, he’d laugh. I don’t have the time. He’ll say. Nobody is willing to stay. His mind pleads.

And then comes Yuuri.

He realizes many things: Yuuri was an even bigger whirlwind. He was deadly and dangerous and beautiful, Viktor had felt the thrill of standing in the eye of a storm when he holds Yuuri’s hand, when he sees his smile. He was beautiful. He was deadly.

Yuuri spends even more time in the rink than him, eyes focused and determined and Viktor watches in awe from the side because he felt like he just got crushed by an avalanche and Yuuri wasn’t even breaking a goddamn sweat. He was fragile and strong, loud and quiet, an enigma Viktor has yet to solve.

Yuuri was beautiful. Yuuri was perfect.

He’s perfect when he takes Makkachin out for walks, when he looks over his shoulder and tosses Viktor a teasing little smile, when he wakes up in the morning with bed hair and crusty eyes, when he’s crying and broken and Viktor doesn’t know what the fuck to do and Yuuri calls his bullshit out for it, when he skates, when he lets Viktor hold him, when he’s Viktor’s.

Yuuri was his.

Yuuri would stay.

One day, while in a hotel bar as he waits for his dearest, he spots someone across from him with the eyes of a ghost from his past.

“I’m opening up a gallery somewhere.” He says when Viktor asks the standard how are you out of sheer politeness. He hasn’t changed, maybe getting edgier and manlier, finally not the young art major he used to be. He has grown. Viktor has grown too.

“The… The Japanese man. Is he…?”

Viktor smiles, purposely setting his hand on the marble counter to show off the gleam in the golden band. The memory of Yuuri sends another warm flutter in Viktor’s heart. God, it’s been years. “Engaged.”

He smiles and nods, seemingly happy for them.

“You love him, truly.”

Viktor purses his lips around his glass. Of course he does, why wouldn’t he? Yuuri was kind and beautiful and smart and all his.

“The moment I mentioned him… you looked like the happiest man in the world.” He says, shaking the glass in his hand, swirling the amber contents. Viktor does not feel any resentment in his voice, but he feels cautious at the incoming topic. “You’re truly happy. It’s amazing.”

Viktor narrows his eyes, just for a fraction. “What made you think I wasn’t?”

He raises an eyebrow. Are you fucking kidding me? Viktor couldn’t blame him. “Your eyes shine, you perk up, and hell, I didn’t even notice that your smile was heart shaped before. Now your grin is bigger than ever.”

Viktor cracks a smile, leaning back against the counter.

He sets the glass down, smiling softly. “I’m happy for you.”

Viktor’s happy too. Truly. He was right. And for once, he was glad that he didn’t decide to stay.

“Do you want to come to the wedding?” It was a little weird to invite your ex to your wedding, but Viktor wasn’t one to follow social norms.

He accepts before finally leaving, one last goodbye between them.

Yuuri finally arrives a few moments later, cheeks flushed and burrowed adorably under a scarf. God knows how torturous Russian weather can be. “Who was that?”

Viktor smiles, kissing Yuuri’s knuckles before lacing their fingers together. “No one of importance.”

During their wedding, Yuuri dips him in for a kiss. Viktor never wanted to let go of the moment, but they crumble on the floor laughing. Chris was discreetly installing a pole in the banquet room and he had to prevent tears more than five times in the past two hours. Yurio resentfully gives him tissues from the sidelines

Viktor might’ve thought that he’ll never get the satisfaction of being complete, thought that he’ll never stop being a whirlwind, but Yuuri carries him away and swept him off his feet, launching him into the air laughing and giggling.

He spots him in the crowd, talking to the girl he brought with him- possibly his now girlfriend, Viktor thinks she’s lovely- and they connect gazes.

He smiles, raises a glass like a toast.

Viktor raises his own glass back.

Viktor was happy. Viktor was complete. Viktor was satisfied.

4 playful kids

Hogwarts was different at Christmastime. Only a few students, and even less professors, stayed behind to celebrate the holiday at the school. The absence of so many people left the castle quiet. Quiet, that is, until Harry Potter’s kids arrived.

“Thanks for bringing them, Gin,” Harry was saying to his ex-wife while the children deposited their things in his rooms.

“No problem, Harry. It’s your turn to have them this year. Fair is fair.” Ginny smiled as she watched Lily unpack her dolls and lay them out neatly on Harry’s bookshelf. “They’ll have fun here. Just make sure you’re there for Christmas dinner at the Burrow.”

Harry nodded. “Of course.”

Ginny hugged Harry and when she pulled away she said, “I’ll just say bye to the kids and then I’ll go, alright?”

“Okay.”

While Ginny went to say farewell to their kids, Harry waited out in the hallway. He had only been standing there for a moment when a young child, younger than any Hogwarts student, came running through the hallway giggling wildly. He was blond, about the same height as Albus, and trailing closely behind him was Draco Malfoy, dignified potions professor.

“You’ll never catch me,” the child said, still laughing uncontrollably.

“We’ll see about that,” Draco said. He caught the child and swung him around in his arms before setting him down again. “I win.”

The little boy put his hands on his hips. “That’s not fair. You have longer legs.”

Draco was about to respond when his gaze drifted up and he saw Harry staring. Harry quickly averted his eyes, but it was too late.

“Come here, Scorpius,” Draco said. “There’s someone I want you to meet.” He took the child by the hand and led him in Harry’s direction. “Potter!” Draco called out.

Harry smiled at Draco and Scorpius as they made their way over to him.

Draco put a hand on Scorpius’ shoulder and said, “Scorpius, this is Harry Potter, the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.”

Scorpius looked up at Draco with wide eyes. “This is the one you were talki-”

Draco put his hand over Scorpius’ mouth to stop his sentence. “Potter, this is my son, Scorpius.”

“Nice to meet you,” Harry said, smiling as he watched Scorpius push his father’s hand away and wipe his mouth with his sleeve.

“Nice to meet you, too,” Scorpius said, though his eyes were focused behind Harry at the three kids who had just walked up.

“Dad?” said Lily, tugging on her father’s sleeve.

Harry turned around. “Oh, there you are. Has your mother left?”
Albus nodded and he glanced at Draco and Scorpius before asking, “Who are they?”

Harry opened his mouth to answer, but Scorpius responded, “Malfoy. Scorpius Malfoy.” He stuck out his hand and Albus shook it without a second thought.

“I’m Albus Potter.”

“Right,” Harry said. “And these are Lily and James.”

Draco nodded. “Nice to meet you all. I’m Professor Malfoy.”

“Oh, that’s Malfoy. The one you talk about all-” James started to say, but Harry covered his mouth with his hand. Albus and Lily laughed as James pushed Harry’s hand away.

“Daddy, we were wondering if we could play tag in the castle,” Lily said and James and Albus nodded along.

“Please, Dad?” said Albus.

Harry rolled his eyes. “Sure, I guess. But don’t let McGonagall catch you, or I’ll be the one in trouble.”

Scorpius’ eyes lit up with excitement. “Can I join you? I hardly ever have anyone to play with.”

Draco frowned at Scorpius’ words, but Harry was the only one who noticed.

“Yes!” Albus said. He grabbed Scorpius’ hand. “You can hide with me, come on. Lily is ‘it’!”

Albus and Scorpius ran off immediately, with James not far behind them.

“Hey, that’s not fair!” Lily called as she started after them. “I’m the littlest!”

Harry and Draco laughed as they watched the children run off. A moment later, they were left alone in the hallway.

“I don’t suppose you’d want to join me in the kitchens for some tea, would you?” Harry asked Draco.

“Actually, that sounds wonderful.”

“Tea’s ready,” announced Mimsy, the house elf, as she delivered a tray of tea to the two professors sitting together at the kitchen counter.

“Thanks, Mimsy,” Draco said.

“So, where is Astoria?” Harry asked as he watched Draco dump about two cups of sugar into his tea.

“Bora Bora, with Michaela.”

“Michaela?”

Draco nodded and took a sip of his tea. “Yes, her girlfriend.”
“It’s nice that you have Scorpius for Christmas, though.”

Draco smiled into his mug. “Yes, I love spending time with him. I’m just sorry that he only has me to play with.”

“He can play with my kids anytime he wants, you know. Albus seemed to like him a lot.”

Draco smiled hopefully at Harry. “Really? Scorp would love that.”

“Yeah,” Harry said, feeling happy that he could do something for Draco. “We’d probably have to spend more time together, though.”

“I don’t have a problem with that. I like you, actually.”

“Really?” Harry said as butterflies took flight in his stomach. “Enough to, I don’t know, go on a date with me?”

Draco blushed and set down his mug. “Are you serious?”

“Yes,” Harry said.

“Then yes. A date would be nice.”

“And how about a kiss? Would a kiss be nice?”

“Albus? Scorpius? You in here?” Lily said as she ran into the kitchen. “Oh, it’s Daddy. Oh, ew. Ew, ew, ew.”

Lily ran back out of the kitchen saying, “They’re kissing, they’re kissing! No one go in there!”

“I baked you cookies.”

Peter jumped slightly, not anticipating someone to walk up behind him at his locker. Turning around, a smile was almost instant when he saw her. Shifting his bag, he accepted the little tin of cookies [Y/N] was holding out to him. “Cookies? Why?”

Her cheeks flushed again, something that he really was starting to enjoy. Ducking her head slightly, her hair fell to cover the rest of the color that covered her cheeks. “Because you spent three hours trying to teach me one thing.” Looking up, she groaned. “And the fact that I’m helpless and I felt really bad that we lost track of time and that you may or may not have gotten at least four hours of sleep.”

Peter chuckled, opening the tin, he placed a cookie in his mouth and placed the rest on the top shelf of his locker. Taking a bite, he had to resist the pleasurable moan that came from just that one bite. Pointing at the cookie, “This, this is really good. Thank you.” Shoving some more books into his bag, he smiled. “If you made these cookies, how many hours did you get?”

Wincing, she pointed to her coffee tumbler, “Like maybe two, if that.”

His brows knitted together, “Do you want to take a rain-check on tonight? I can study up on the history exam myself.” Peter felt bad that she was running on fumes.

She shook her head, “We made a deal.” Sipping on her coffee, she smiled. “Although, instead of studying at the library, if you’re okay with it. I would much rather study at my house so I can drink all the free coffee I can, to get me through it.”

“You-your house?”

Nodding, “Yeah, I already asked my mom not that it would have mattered. Both my parents are doctors at the hospital so they’re never home.” Leaning her head to the side, she raised a brow, “I mean we can still study at the library if that’s more comfortable-”

“-no! I mean, no, yeah, that’s fine. We can go to your house.” Peter cleared his throat, mentally slapping himself for sounding like an idiot. Closing his locker, he slung his bag on his shoulder, “What time?”

She shrugged, “I mean we can go right after school like yesterday.” Following him the direction of their Chemistry class, she sighed. “Something tells me you’re way better at history then I am with mechanical engineering.”

Peter chuckled, “I don’t want to brag but I am pretty awesome at history and mechanical engineering but it doesn’t hurt to study up.” Looking down at her, he couldn’t help but feel at ease talking to her. Occasionally, he’d find himself tripping over his words but for the most part, he didn’t feel socially awkward or anxious.

“Hey guys whats up!” Ned slung his arms around both Peter and [Y/N], scaring the daylights out of them.

[Y/N] yelped out loudly, almost dropping her coffee in the process. Desperately needing the caffeine to get her through the day, she opted to save her tumbler over her binders. They scattered the floor, “Well, shit.” She blurted.

Peter gave Ned a look while he gave an apologetic shrug, “Seriously, dude.” Bending down to help pick up the scattered papers, his attention got drawn to a realistic sketch of Spiderman. Pausing, he looked at [Y/N] who was busily trying to rescue her neatly written notes and papers. “Did you draw this?”

Scrambling all the papers together and shoving them into her binder, she finally looked over. Her breath getting caught in her throat. “Um, uh, um.” Standing up slowly with Peter, she gently took it from his hands, “Yes, I, um, I think he’s pretty cool….”

Ned leaned over her shoulder, smirking, “Wicked.”

[Y/N] narrowed her eyes at him as she quickly shoved it inside a notebook. Peter had a dumbstruck smile on his face, “Yeah, he is pretty cool.”

Tucking a piece of hair behind her ear, she nodded. “I like the whole hero in New York City thing. And despite his not so legal methods of keeping the city safe, I like it.” Biting her lip, she avoided their gazes, “It’s for my art class by the way, I’m not just randomly drawing Spiderman.”

Peter grinned, “It wouldn’t be weird even if you were just randomly drawing him.”

Blushing again, [Y/N] nodded halfway. “Right, well, um, I’ll see you in class.” Before Peter could stop her, she weaved in and out of students and headed to Chemistry.

Ned slapped Peter on the back, grinning, “Dude! You are so in!”

March 10th, 1917
She didn’t get it; nobody did. How could she, a woman that lived in the year 2017, have a soulmate that is 100 years old? She always thought it was a painful joke. Everyone around her had years written on their wrist, arms, legs, you name it. But from the year 1917? No. She was the only one. The one who had a joke for a soulmate.

Yeah, sure, maybe there was one old man still kickin’ it out there, but there was no chance in hell she’d marry him. There was no chance she’d put herself in that type of predicament, therefore, her tattoo was a joke.

It pissed her off, beyond what anyone could imagine. Everyday, she was reminded by the date, the date tattooed in the crease of her arm. It pissed her off because she wasn’t the type that normally attracted anyone. She wasn’t the one for love, or so that’s what she thought. Nobody was really interested in her, and the only chance of someone liking her was for a laugh.

She was deep in her thoughts when someone brought her back to reality.

“Hey, (Y/N)! Don’t want to be caught dozing off on the job, do you?” Her friend, Austin, threw a hacky sack at her arm.

Laughing, she picked it up and swung it back at him. “You need these for the customers! Don’t go throwing them at your friends!”

He swiftly grabbed the toy before setting it on the small counter. There were a handful of booths in the amusement park, and they just had to make him watch over the ones with miniature bing bags.

While Austin was taking over the booth called ‘Tin Can Toss’, she was in charge of the ‘I Can Guess Your Weight/Age!’ game. She hated it, really, but she had to make money some how, and for her it was guessing something she didn’t nearly care about.

It’s not that it was boring, but it was stupid. They had her take special classes, 45 minutes a day wasted on learning what was the best way to guess someone’s age or weight. Sure, she’d rather be working at a Starbucks or any old candy store, but for now she was stuck on a guessing game.

“Keep an eye out, I think that group over there is planning on playing your game” Austin spoke up, pointing in the direction behind her.

She looked over her shoulder and groaned. Three guys and girl were leaning up against a fence that surrounded the carousel nearby, their eyes stuck on the booth you sat in. A darker male was laughing loudly, nudging another man with long brown hair your way.

“Nah, they’re just laughing at how stupid the game is.”

“I don’t know, (Y/N). I think they’re coming!” He nodded his head in their direction, clearly pointing out that the group was making their way toward you.

She practically whined at her friend before turning towards the customers with a fake smile.

“Hello! Plan on playing?” She kept that fake smile plastered on her face, observing each and every one of them.

“Yeah, actually, my friend here wants you to guess his age.” The darker man from before clamped his hands on the back of the brunettes shoulders, pushing him even closer to her.

“Oh, yeah? Alright, let’s give it a go! It’ll just be 5 dollars.” She watched as the third man dug his wallet out of his pocket. After a few moments, he handed her the bill and she stuck it in the apron around her waist.

“Okay, so let’s see.” She walked toward the shy man, looking him up and down, studying his facial features and body shape. “You don’t mind if I just… awkward check you out, right? I promise, it’s part of the job.”

He smiled, chuckling silently. His eyes observed the woman before him, watching her study his body as if it were an art piece in a gallery.

“Well, before I guess, remember that if I’m 2 years off, it counts. Alright?” She crossed her arms, thinking one last time before receiving a nod from the male.

“Okay, give it your best.” His friends behind him laughed, covering their mouths. She knew something wasn’t right, but she didn’t know what. The whole group was acting weird. Why were they acting weird?

“28.” She shrugged her shoulders, wrinkling her eyes in uncertainty. She watched them as they held their laughter in, trying not to seem like they were laughing at her guess.

“Way off?” She dropped her arms, sighing. “I’m new to this job. I lost, go ahead and grab a prize.” She placed a hand on her hip, the other rubbing her face as she closed her eyes.

“Don’t even want to know my actual age?” He hesitantly stood there, looking back at his friend, then returning his gaze back at her.

“To see how much I failed? Nah, I’ll pass.” She smiled while doubting herself, watching the man rub his stubble.

“You technically are around that age physically, Bucky. Cut her some slack, she was right.” The blond friend set his hand on Buckys shoulder.

She furrowed her eyebrows, giving a confused smile. “Whatever that’s suppose to mean.”

He looked back at his friends, receiving an ‘approval’ nod. Not only did she notice, but she was even more confused as she was before.

“Well, I don’t know how to say this but,” He trailed off, looking behind him at his blond friend again. She could tell he was looking for reassurance, but not what for. “I’m 100 years old. My body looks around 28 years old, but technically I’m 100.”

She put on a humorous smile, looking over at Austin who was eavesdropping from the booth. He hid his laugh, shrugging at her.

“100? Glad I know someone around the same age, I’m 97.” She held her hand out at Bucky, smiling mischievously while he gave her a serious look.

“Don’t believe me?” She dropped he hand, rolling her eyes at how serious he was taking the act.

“Why would I? There is no way in hell you’re 100 years old. You don’t even look old enough to have your own children.” She leaned against the back of the booth, crossing her arms and laughing dryly.

“He’s not lying.” The friend from earlier walked forward, setting his hand on Buckys shoulder. “Ever heard of Captain America?”

She continued to stare strangely at the men, wondering why they’re even telling her this. Even if they were telling the truth, why go as far as this to prove it to her?

“Steve Rogers, the face of America! A man who was frozen in ice, brought back, and now works for the Avengers or something. Are you telling me you’re Captain America?” She sarcastically explained, rubbing her eyes, and growing tired of the conversation. None of it made sense to her, and she didn’t care anyways.

“Well, I am. This here is my friend Bucky.” The blond claimed, staring at her as if not an ounce of what he said was a lie.

She leaned her head back, looking at the sky.
Great, (Y/N). Here you are, sitting at a worthless booth being told this man is 100 years old and is best friends with Captain America.

“Okay, but why are you telling me this?” She straightened her back, grabbing the nearby water bottle and taking a long drink.

“We walked past this booth earlier, and uh,” He trailed off, looking towards the darker man that had kept quiet this whole time. “My friend, Sam, noticed your arm.”

“My arm?” She looked down at her arm, seeing nothing out of the ordinary.

“Well, it says the 10th of March, 1917.” His finger pointed toward the part of your arm which had the birthdate of your soulmate.

“You’re not implying that-“

“Is your birthday (DD/MM/1989)? That’s all I want to know.” Bucky cut her off, staring at her arm and then into her eyes. “I just want to make for sure.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” She furrowed her eyebrows, staring at the floor. There was no way he was he soulmate, this made no sense.

She took a deep breath, accepting the situation and began to believe it. Why would they lie about this? It had to be true, right?

“All this time I thought I was going to be this old mans soulmate. There’s no way! This has to be a joke!” She ran her hands through her hair, looking over at her friend for support. He shrugged his shoulders before giving her a smile that basically said ‘it’s all on you’.

She inhaled deeply, staring at the blue-eyed man in front of her. “If you are my soulmate, then this whole time I actually had one, and it wasn’t some old man on life support. Holy shit! I can’t believe this! I never thought this day would come! I think I’m actually-“

“Calm down, Doll.” His voice spoke deeply to her, calming her down instantly. “Breathe. Just breathe.”

She slowly nodded, taking in a deep breath and calming her heart beat.

Someone scoffed loudly behind him, speaking up in a humorous voice. “Don’t tell her to calm down, you were practically the same way before we calmed you down and brought you over here.”

Bucky rolled his eyes, looking behind him and slapping the mans arm, receiving a troublesome grin. “Sam. You’ve stayed quiet, and then you decided to speak at the worse time?”

Bucky turned back to her, looking at her arm once again before pulling his left sleeve up. “I always thought that God put a date from many generations after me on my arm as a joke. As if I couldn’t love anyone from my own generation. I surrounded myself with different woman, hoping to just prove to myself that I could love someone. Then I lost my arm, and for the longest I couldn’t remember the date that was printed there.”

“Your arm-“ She instantly grabbed his left arm, holding it in her hands and admiring the metal blades. She would have felt sorry, but she somewhat found it amazing. “You can use this as your arm? How is that possible?”

She traced her fingers against the patterns on his arm, holding them strongly in her grip as if it was as fragile as a glass plate.

“Maybe you can explain it to her over dinner tonight.” The woman finally spoke up, giving you both a smirk.

Bucky looked over his shoulder, laughing at what she had said “Did you just hit on her for me?”

“Someone had to do it.”

“Agreed” Steve spoke up, earning a nod from Sam.

“Keep in mind that you were the back alley kid once.” Bucky shook his head before pulling his sleeve back down and shoving his hands into his pockets.

Steve walked up, giving him a pat on the back. “Hey, I’ll leave you two alone for now. Call me when you’re ready.

They shared a smile before exchanging a few words, and parting ways. The three traveled to a food stand across the walkway, slowly watching them both out of the corner of their eyes.

He began to speak, trying to start a small conversation and learn the basics but he kept noticing the obvious glances from across the park.

“Obvious, aren’t they?” He looked across the area, watching them as they quickly look the other way as if they weren’t staring moments before.

“Very.”

He smiled awkwardly before hesitantly holding out his human arm towards her. She gave him a confusing, but humorous look before slowly accepting it and shaking.

“Sorry, I just never got to introduce myself properly. Bucky Barnes, well, James Barnes. I’d like to go by Bucky though.”

“I kinda like James, I don’t know.” She teased, giving him a quick wink and setting her hands on her hips. “Nice to meet you, bucky.”

“C’mon now, Darlin’. I need a name in return.” He sheepishly smiled at her, receiving a blush and an awkward smile.

“(Y/N). (Y/N) (Y/L/N).”

Y/N was a bit of an outcast at school. Not to the extent of some people but she was not seen as the most normal of people. She was an avid artist but mainly loved to use herself as a canvas. Her arms and legs were very often covered in various beautiful images. This had caught Billy Hargrove’s attention the moment he set foot in the school. He was adamant he could get her to go out with him but in the end, had wound up as her best friend. No one really saw it coming, the two people in question least of all. But it had happened and now neither of them could do without the other.

Y/N climbed into the passenger side of the blue Camaro as she always did after school. Max was absent tonight as she was in AV club with the boys. “Hey.” She greeted Billy as she climbed in.

“Hey, princess.” Billy smiled his signature smile. He had adopted the nickname when he first met her and it had become a habit he couldn’t shake.

“I need you to help me with something.” Y/N fiddled with her fingers nervously as Billy pulled out of the school.

“What is it?” Billy glanced over at her.

“I have an art project to do and you know how I usually use myself as a canvas…” He nodded. “I need to do it on someone else and then take photos. I was wondering if I could use you?”

“Of course. You wanna do it now?” He questioned as they pulled onto her street.

“If that’s okay with you.” She said as the car came to a stop.

“Yeah, I’ve got nothing else interesting to do.” He smiled as they both climbed out of the car.

They were greeted by Y/N’s mother as they entered. “How was your day?”

“Fine.” Y/N replied as her mother noticed Billy.

“Oh, hello, Billy. How are you?”

“Fine thanks Mrs L/N.” Billy smiled.

“You two-”

Y/N cut her mother off. “I’ve got an art project. Billy’s helping me.”

“Okay. You kids be careful.”

Y/N quickly pulled Billy upstairs before her mother could say anything else.

“Does she still think we’re dating?” Billy smirked.

“Yes.” Y/N huffed. “No matter how many times I tell her different.”

Billy chuckled and sat on the edge of her bed. He watched as she collected various paints and brushes. She threw a sheet on the floor and pulled another one out of the cupboard and put it on the ground. She grabbed some paint covered clothes and a pot and went into the bathroom. When she came back she had changed and the pot was full of water.

“Okay, where do you want me, princess?” Billy smirked as she started to go red.

“I need you to sit on the floor.” She paused as he did so. “And take your shirt off.”

Billy raised an eyebrow as a more wicked smirk graced his face. He slowly started taking his jacket off. “You know, if you wanted to see me naked this much, princess, you could have just asked.”

“Shut-up, dipshit. I need to paint on your chest.” Y/N tried not to look at the way his muscles flexed as he lifted his shirt over his head. She sat crossed legged in front of him as she arranged her paints and equipment on the sheet. She tossed the spare sheet over his legs to protect his jeans. She dipped her brush in the first colour and applied it to the upper right part of his chest.

He jumped back with an intake of breath. “Sorry, it’s cold.” He chuckled and she joined him.

The tension in the room lessoned as she began to form beautiful images on his chest out of the simplest of movements. He watched her work with awe and was suddenly reminded by what drew him to her in the first place. She took her time as she worked; making sure everything was perfect. She ended up with paint in her hair and on her face and Billy couldn’t stop smiling. Every so often she would go slightly wrong and would have to correct it with a cloth. Every time it happened, Billy would hold his breath and will himself to think of anything else.

“Finished.” She smiled and sat back to look over her work. “Stay still. I’m gonna grab the camera.” She came back in and positioned him in front of a white sheet that was draped over one wall. She took a few photos and placed each polaroid on top of a folder.

“Is that all?” He questioned as she looked over the photos.

“I need to do another one. But we can do it some other time if you want to get home.” She told him as she grabbed a fresh bowl of water and a cloth.

“No, I got no where to be.” He smiled.

“Okay.” She motioned for him to sit down and started to clean the paint from his chest.

This time Billy couldn’t stop himself. He was in no position to ruin her work this time. Without a second thought he lunged forward and pressed his lips against hers. The kiss was primal and full of need as she melted into him and tangled her hands in his hair. He started trailing kisses down her neck before he moved to her ear. “I think we can do the other one some other time.”

“Agreed.” She muttered breathlessly.

He smirked as he kissed her again.

Two hours. That’s how long you’ve been standing outside the building, staring at the glass doors as your warped reflection slides in and out of view.

Two hours spent in the warm sunshine, a slight sunburn starting to form on the tip of your nose.

Two hours reminding yourself that this is for your career. Reminding yourself that this choice is not about him, it was never about him. That even if he didn’t work here, you’d still pick this university because it’s the best and it’s the only place your career will thrive.

Two hours telling yourself you’re strong enough to see his face. That one look at his full lips and warm eyes won’t send your knees to the floor, collapsing beneath the weight of your desire, not like it used to.

Not anymore.

You met Kim Taehyung out of all places, out of all times- during a bad date.

You were in a chain coffee shop, sitting opposite a man who was as beautiful as he was boring, wondering how dating had become like this for you. Boring dates, zero chemistry- and the looming fear of ending up alone pushing you into halfhearted commitments.

When your date had excused himself and gone to the bathroom, you had breathed a sigh of relief. Frankly, pretending to listen and inserting time-appropriate “Mm” noises was more difficult than it appeared. It was at that moment that Taehyung had sat down in your date’s seat.

‘Sat’ was a mild way of putting it- he plopped down, draping over the chair comfortably, before flashing you a big grin. He looks a bit ridiculous, was your first thought- he was dressed in an oversized stripy linen shirt, slides, and a huge beanie. His strong eyebrows were quirked upwards from underneath his beanie and you shot him a slightly confused, mostly bitchy stare.

“Bad date?” He had sighed sympathetically. “Do you want to talk about it?” He folded his hands and raised an eyebrow at you knowingly like he was your mid-life crisis dating coach. You narrowed your eyes at him.

“He’s alright,” You replied defensively.

“Wow. Alright.” Taehyung responded, nodding seriously. “And they say romance is dead.”
