the arm of liberty

The Statue of Liberty’s arm is tired.
She may have torn her rotator cuff.
She still has dual citizenship,
wonders if her passport is in order.

She imagines lowering her arm,
dousing the torch in the harbor,
boiling the sea and seething Ellis Island.

Friends, look at the person next to you.
Put your arm around their shoulder.
Help them keep that torch in the air.
Tell them you’d never turn them in.
We’re the resistance now.

‘High Noon-er’

Yep, it’s my other Overwatch crush, McCree. I’m such a fan of the grizzled gunslinger and that voice. Mmmph! He can High-Noon me anytime…. Ehehehehe~

I took some artistic liberties with his arm and left out his holsters because I wanted to keep this simple. The focus here is his overall shirtless appeal. Cuz damn…. Okay, I’ll just be staring and sweating over here in the corner.

A doodle of wolvorineced‘s little AU idea of Rhys, Fiona, Vaughn and Sasha having an adventure as kids. I was supposed to just sketch it out so I could finish it later but whoops

In other words, anti-gunners;

Nearly two years and thirty cribs later, and KCN is coming at you again with another cadre of demons from the ever-fertile Lesser Key of Solomon, as interpreted by our pal Louis Breton, and then again by series artist and blog namesake Kazuma Kaneko (also our pal). And while our first set was chosen to highlight some of the more borderline cases out there, here we’ll be taking a look at a few of the less embellished designs in the roster… and Purson.

  1. OROBAS: Orobas is one of the closer calls here, and perhaps Kaneko simply thought it unnecessary to alter the functional simplicity of Breton’s original. He’s certainly more ecstatic in the latter portrayal, but otherwise we’re not looking at much divergence that couldn’t be chalked up to personal style: the guy is just sort of a horse-person, arms spread-eagle, and it works.
  2. BARBATOS: Kaneko takes a few more liberties with Barbatos, but in service of accomplishing a more “demonic” look, replete with signifiers such as bat-like wings, curled horns, and a pointed devil’s tail. These have the effect of making the duke look a bit less like a gentleman beleaguered by a ghostly brass section, all while retaining his dapper style.
  3. GEMORI: Gemori is likewise a near match, though she may not look it at first glance. Kaneko deviates little from Breton in terms of the meat and bones of the design, adjusting details of the dress (and perhaps the breed of camel employed) while maintaining distinctive cues such as the horns popping out from a headdress with trailing veil.
  4. PURSON: Pruflas/Purson is perhaps not the most exciting fare the Goetia has to offer, but Kaneko’s additions of a garish palette and luxurious mane were apparently not the trappings of a compendium regular. A grasped serpent and bizarre helmet likewise enter the fray, but otherwise Breton’s template is left essentially untouched.

Additional Breton Cribbin’: Melchom, Ukobach, Stolas, Belphegor/Beelzebub, Adramelech

Sura stepped back from her handiwork, holding it at arm’s length, squinting. She was taking some liberties, she realized, but she thought Bell’s charm would compensate for it. Then she grimaced slightly, Maybe not. Determined, however, she took her composition and left the apartment to post it on the market boards in Ul'dah, along with the rest of the personals. Never courted, never kissed; poor Bell.

She hurried through the Goblet and into the city proper, dodging the heavy evening traffic as people funneled to restaurants and other places for their Valentione’s celebrations. Waiting her turn patiently at the throng around the market board, she cast about the crowd curiously, and spotted a flash of brilliant pink clothing and heard a familiar tinkling laugh. Was that–?

“Sura! Surenqaaaara!” A bright, sweet voice yelled. Leilani Leilai jumped up and down, straining to be seen amidst the crowd. The little Lalafell finally darted her way between all the legs and boots surrounding her, nimble as a fish in water, and caught up to her Au Ra friend. “Sura! I haven’t seen ya in forever!” She threw her arms around Sura’s leg and hugged her as tightly as she could, pushing her dashing hat back on her forehead, the brightly dyed plumes bobbing behind her. “Whatcha up to? New songs? New adventures!?” Her eyes were sparkling in glee.

Surenqara laughed softly, pleased to see her diminutive friend again, stooping to hug her back. The friendly Lalafellin bard never failed to brighten her day. “Nothing so grand; an ad for a friend,” she showed the slip of paper to Leilani.

“Let’s see… 35, uh-huh, books… Hmmm.” Her doll-like features became thoughtful, and she put a finger to her chin. Sura raised her eyebrows in anticipation, and Leilani said, “Well. It’s nice!”

“But,” Sura prompted, her tail weaving in amusement.

“Is it fer Valentione’s? Does he wanna get kissed?” Leliani frowned.

“Yeees,” Sura began. Bell, of course, had no idea.

“Then it definitely needs MORE!” Leilani pulled a red marker from somewhere out of her costume, and set to the paper with a will. Moments later, she handed it back, beaming in pride.

Sura took one look, raised her black brows, widened her golden eyes in wonder, and nodded solemnly at Leilani. “Much better,” she said. The Lalafell preened. Near enough to the board now, Sura tacked it up next to the others, just at eye level, nodding in satisfaction. Her own round black script had been crossed out in several places, Leilani’s crisp writing replacing it in intensely red ink.

We hold these truths to be self evident, sacred, and indisputable, that all men are created equal, not in their virtues, their talents, their dispositions, or their acquirement, but in their unalienable right to, life, liberty, property, & self ownership. These rights are inalienable in that even individuals themselves have no right to divorce their rights from themselves, by gift or sale.

Human life once conceived though entrusted to its mother, & by right aided by its father, belongs to itself. Life cannot be justly taken unless there be due conviction for a capital offense which requires finding there to be wrongful death, or in matters of self defense where one fears for their life, as with a thief breaking in in-the-night, or egregious transgressions against their rights, as with flagrant theft; as property’s maintenance requires the force of arms & law.

Liberty is the right of all adults to equal suffrage in their rights including the use of force in response to aggression; aggression which includes force, threat of force, or transgression upon rights, & usurpation of, or absconding with property.

Non Adults are considered wards of their guardians, who are to be their natural parents whenever possible. Non Adults may seek emancipation, whenever they be able to maintain independent subsistence. No law shall be made which would restrict orphans from being adopted into homes fit for human habitation. The child’s preference whenever discernable must be considered in prospective foster parents.

Property is material properly owned, by improvement of resources found in a state of nature, by receiving it as a gift from the rightful previous owner to yourself, or by consenting exchange in labor or property by the rightful owners.

Self ownership is the moral truth and certain right that each man has nontransferable property in himself, not to be confused with his labor the sale of which is an extension of self ownership.  Self ownership entails a man be responsible for his wants and needs, and though he may ask whatever he likes, he may never demand what is not due him by force or threat.

Tolerance of religions not proscribing the violation of rights is necessary to a free society; Religious duty and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence; therefore free practice of religion, public and private and the right to conscientious objection shall never be infringed upon by law. No Church shall be erected in the name of people not consenting nor hold force of law over people not consenting nor coerce parishioners from dissent.

Free communication being as sacred and necessary to liberty and property as property & liberty are to life, no law may infringe upon or facilitate its free exercise.

A well armed people being necessary to the security of a free state; no man woman or child of sufficient ability will be debarred the use or ownership of arms in any case whatsoever up to and including drones, military grade lasers, heavy artillery, tanks, battleships, & giant robots, humanoid or otherwise.

No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

The expenditure of money by law on objects of benevolence and subsequent wasting the labours of the people under the pretence of taking care of them being stark raving plunder or just plain socialism, shall be prevented by any means of force available whenever explicitly undertaken.

Property being acquired for the use of the general public must be held by an individual or owned by a group in the trust of an individual or not at all. There shall by law never be property private or public held in the name of the public. This shall not prohibit private property being made available for public use by private owners. Subsequently any office to be held by law will not be furnished in any material way by any law whatsoever. Public roads once held as government property will be sold to private owners.

Hereditary titles of nobility, nor hereditary offices, may be prescribed by any law, vote, person of office, bureaucratic edict, or any form of authority, ever.

The only lawful and just form of government is a republican form of government; that is government by the people, through democratically elected representatives, limited in their powers by rule of law. A Dual Federalist system with separation of powers at each level being a righteous incarnation thereof.

Elections of members to serve as representatives of the people, in assembly, ought to be free; and all men, having sufficient evidence of citizenship in the community have the right of suffrage.

The enumeration of certain rights or explanation thereof shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

[many brazen uncited quotes lifted to make this rant possible or rather easy]

New York. Recovering Shells from New York Harbor after the Black Tom Explosion, 1916.

Black Tom was an Island in new York Harbor that was used as a munitions depot. Sales of explosives were banned to Germany in 1916 and as a result, German saboteurs used “cigar” bombs to ignite 1.1 million pounds of TNT and ammunition waiting to be sent to Britain and France on July 30, 1916. The explosion was felt as far away as Maryland and had the force of an earthquake measuring 5.5 in the richter scale. One of the results of the explosion was that the raised arm of the Statue of Liberty was so weakened by the blast, that it was closed to the public, and has never reopened since.

Landfill eventually joined Black Tom to the mainland, and the former island is now a part of Jersey City.

The Arm of Liberty, 1876-1882

‘The arm and torch of the Statue of Liberty in Madison Square Park, New York. These portions of the Statue were exhibited to raise funds for the completion of the statue and its pedestal. The arm and torch remained in the park from 1876 until 1882.

‘Members of the public could pay fifty cents to climb to the balcony of the torch.’
