You can now pretend to know all about Marvel and the comic universe by knowing these simple facts about The Avengers and stuff:
(Note, this will not work on people who actually know a lot about comics)
“Hey it’s that guy from Guardians of the Galaxy!” Yes, this is Thanos, he’s #47 on IGN’s top 100 comic book villains of all time; he was born on the moon Titan and is basically immortal and superhuman and is obsessed with Mistress Death:
He’ll do anything to get her attention, including kill his own family. So dude has no chill.
Also he kidnapped Gamora and Nebula and made them assassins. He just likes to screw people over.
He wants to complete the Infinity Gauntlet (that glove thing he has) by getting all the Infinity Gems (or Stones):
Together they create a power that is only surpassed by the One-Above-All and the Living Tribunal. Which are basically Marvel’s version of God and the guy who does errands for him like destroy planets and stuff. (Fun Fact: Peter Parker was once visited by the disguised One-Above-All while his Aunt was sick. Tell this to the ladies and they’ll swoon over your comic knowledge) Anyways, no one wants these gems together. Except Thanos, of course.
“Hey those are those thingy-ma-bobs from the movies” Yes, these are the gems we have seen so far. The Tesseract is the Space Stone and is what Loki used for his tantrum. The Aether is the Realty stone and the only gem that is seen in liquid form. It’s that weird stuff from the Thor 2 movie that was just scary looking once inside Jane. The Soul Stone is in Loki’s staff. The Orb is the Power Stone that came out in Guardians of the Galaxy and killed all organic matter and gave us really cool shots of skin peeling off and such.
I mean come on, how cool does that look??
This collector guy is trying to get them all for himself cause he’s just a huge hoarder:
So that is who the Avengers with the Guardians of the Galaxy will have to eventually fight. “but what about all those other movies that are planned?”
Well, this is Ultron:
He’s an advanced robot that wants to kill all of humanity. He was created by Ant-Man and at some point wants to get jiggy with Wasp (Ant-Man’s wife). He will be the villian for Avengers 2, though his origins will be changed for the movie. “But who’s Ant-Man?”
He was one of the original Avengers and can go from really big to really small while keeping the same strength. He will have his own movie. Bonus points: if you pretend to be outraged at the fact that Wasp will not come out in his film you’ll REALLY look like you know your stuff. But in all seriousness, why the hell isn’t she???
Also if you were confused with Captain America 2 post-credits, those twins everyone gasped over are Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver:
They are Magneto’s kids “the guy from X-men? isn’t he bad? and a mutant?” Yes, but then they grew up and were like “screw you dad, we do what we want!” and joined the Avengers. But since X-men and Avengers are produced by different studios, the two concepts can’t collide. X-men movies are allowed to use the characters as long as they don’t mention their role in the Avengers, and the Avengers are allowed to use the characters as long as they don’t mention them being mutants. Look at you, now you know about studios and film rights and stuff. Wow, impressive.
So this is what they will look like in The Avengers 2:
Also at some point in 2016 there will be a Doctor Strange movie
He’s a superhero who was a neurosurgeon but crushed his hands and learned mystic arts and protects the world from them. Think of him as a really cool magician.
Congrats! Now you can mention these facts with strong confidence and people will think you know EVERYTHING about Marvel. Now glory in their admiration for you.

Explanation: Why isn’t this ant a big sphere? Planetary nebula Mz3 is being cast off by a star similar to our Sun that is, surely, round. Why then would the gas that is streaming away create an ant-shaped nebula that is distinctly not round? Clues might include the high 1000-kilometer per second speed of the expelled gas, the light-year long length of the structure, and the magnetism of the star visible above at the nebula’s center. One possible answer is that Mz3 is hiding a second, dimmer star that orbits close in to the bright star. A competing hypothesis holds that the central star’s own spin and magnetic field are channeling the gas. Since the central star appears to be so similar to our own Sun, astronomers hope that increased understanding of the history of this giant space ant can provide useful insight into the likely future of our own Sun and Earth.
