the all american league

you: man, why aren’t there any out lgbt professional hockey players? wouldn’t that be so cool? also, watching nhl games on tv costs so much money! i can’t afford to buy an expensive cable plan, but i don’t want to watch games illegally… and gosh, the nhl really sucks in terms of racial diversity…. everyone is so white… i wish there was a way i could enjoy hockey without having to deal with all the problematic issues associated with the nhl…

me, an intellectual:

Now that I’ve used memes to get your attention….

1. The NWHL is super gay!!! The NWHL is partnered with You Can Play, Kourtney Kunichika has a fiancée, and Harrison Browne is the first transgender athlete to play in a professional American sports league! And that’s not even all of them!!

2. Every nwhl game is streamed online completely free! no costs!!! legally!!! the NWHL youtube channel live streams all the games!!

3. Blake Bolden and Kaliya Johnson are both African-American women playing in the NWHL. There are also several Asian-Americans (Kourtney Kunichika included) and the top draft pick from the 2016 draft was a woman of color named Kelsey Koelzer.

4. All the players just genuinely seem nice??? Like they’re supportive and kind with each other all the time! They have meals together! They’re good friends! They bake each other cookies and give them to each other in Bath and Body Works bags with handwritten notes!

tl;dr: the national women’s hockey league does not get enough attention from tumblr and frankly i think that needs to change

I need more pals

It’s coming up to 2017 and I feel like I’ve not met enough new people in 2016. I also want more blogs to follow. Please like/reblog/follow if you post any of the following and feel free to message me at any time.

Out of the Park Masterlist

Seventy years after the initial opening of the All-American Girls’ Professional Baseball League, several MLB team owners have invested together in a tributary women’s league. The deal is for one season, but hundreds of women across the country are vying for the sixty-four spots available.

The one thing your best friend, Jeremy, made you promise before his third overseas deployment was to try out for the tribute league.

“You never know,” he said. “It could open big doors for the rest of your life.”

Jensen Ackles was a star player in the MLB, until a cheap move by a base-runner landed him on the DL. Always arrogant and slightly cranky anyway, his new assignment as coach for one of the women’s baseball teams is not an idea he is fond of.

“Give it a chance,” his team manager encourages. “Maybe you’ve found a new calling.”

Can you take a chance and make a lifetime dream come true? Can Jensen stop fighting against the path his life is taking? Will leaning on each other lead to relationship neither of you wanted or planned on?

A League of Their Own (1992)

Batter up! Hear that call! The time has come for one and all, to play ball. We are the members of the All-American League. We come from cities near and far. We’ve got Canadians, Irishmen and Swedes. We’re all for one, we’re one for all. We’re All-Americans!  ♫

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you’ve written, then pass on to at least five other writers (◠‿◠✿)

@oddlyfamiliar tagged me, so thank you, lovely!!

These are all just in chronological order because i’m terrible at ranking systems

Her Motto “Do or Die” | Bellarke | Teen | 6/6 | 52,039 words

In 1943, Clarke Griffin leaves everything behind to be a part of the All-American Girl’s Professional Baseball League. With her team and reluctant manager, it seems like the world is her oyster.

Of course, nothing is that easy.

This was the first long fic that I actually ended up finishing and posting, so it holds a special place in my heart. Also: A League of Their Own!!

Waiting for Your Heart’s Defection | Bellarke | Teen | 1/1 | 10,930 words

Bellamy discovers that Octavia is not really a temp and neither is her friend Clarke. Of course, everything is more complicated than he’s ready to deal with.

This is the fic that really cemented my love of writing weird AUs, and I can honestly say that a year out, I still am pretty proud of it.

kill each other like civilized people | Bawson | Explicit | 3/3 | 21,522 words

Ginny’s got a problem. It would be unsportsmanlike if Mike didn’t offer a helping hand.

AKA: Baker’s gonna be the death of Lawson and vice versa.

AKA I write 20k of smut and fall headfirst into the bawson trash pile

I Dream of Ginny | Bawson | Teen | 1/1 | 10,285 words

There were probably more reasonable explanations for this. Like all the concussions had battered his brain into producing hallucinations. Or one of the guys decided it would be funny to spike his Gatorade with LSD. Really, anything was more reasonable than what he somehow knew to be true: He’d found a genie and her name was Ginny.

Seriously.

If anyone thought I wouldn’t recommend a fic I started solely for the pun, you’d be very, very wrong. But this was actually so much fun to write, too, and I still genuinely like it.

forgetting is so long | Bawson | Teen | ½ | 5,197 words

prompt: angsty angst. yelling at each other about anything and everything: ginny’s pitching, mike’s attitudes, their distractions with rachel and ginny’s new boyfriend. them in each other’s faces. but then passionate makeout, brushing it off, and ‘we shouldn’t have done that’, and scene.

Angst is not in my wheelhouse, so this was a stretch for me, but I’m actually pretty happy with the way it turned out. Even if I was stressing about it…

Bonus: Part two is coming sometime in the future!

Again, I’m terrible at keeping up with who has/hasn’t been tagged. So, if you’re looking for a chance to jump in, this is it!! Tag me back so I can get more fic recs 😙

This Used to Be My Playground

In 1943, Chicago Cubs owner P.K. Wrigley founded the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, in a contingency move to keep the sport of baseball alive in case the major leagues had to close down because of the Second World War. The women proved to be so popular that their stereotype-shattering league was active until 1954, and their exploits were retold years later in a documentary for PBS. In 1992, director Penny Marshall and screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandell brought the story of the female baseball players to the big screen under the title A League of Their Own.

Music supervisor Jay Landers was working at Columbia Records when label president Don Ienner asked him to read the film’s script. “I thought it was terrific and Michael Dilbeck, head of music for Columbia Pictures, and I decided we could put a good soundtrack together,” Landers says. “Penny Marshall was very receptive to our musical ideas. And the one thing that made this record particularly easy to do was that everyone in the music community was such a big fan of Penny that we didn’t need to go hat in hand to anyone, because they were all eager to help her.”

Marshall’s concept for the soundtrack was to have contemporary artists recording music of the period. “She wanted it to be very accurate to the actual time frame,” explains Landers, so that a song from 1944 would not be heard in a scene taking place in 1943. “The picture is bookended by modern day footage,” adds the music supervisor. “So the film starts with a reunion and Carole King wrote the opening song. And Madonna was in the movie, so it was only natural to want her to sing a song. There was some early hesitation about whether she should stop out of character so you suddenly hear Madonna’s voice over the end titles, but ultimately there was enough separation between the character and Madonna that Penny, Mike and myself felt it would be okay.”

Shep Pettibone recalls that he and Madonna had just completed work on their first ballad together, “Rain,” when Marshall called her star and asked if she would record a song for the film. “Madonna said she really didn’t have anything,” says Pettibone. But the director wanted a ballad and they had just finished one that turned out so well. “I came up with a track that night and Madonna came over the next day and said, ‘I have an idea for it.’” Two days later, they had completed “This Used to Be My Playground.” They sent the track off to Marshall for her reaction. “We immediately loved it,” says Landers. “We all thought it would be a very successful record and we knew right away it would be perfect.”

Recording the track was a new experience for Pettibone, as it was the first time he had worked with all live musicians. “We took the track and put a live drummer to it and live strings and live piano. We didn’t have any strings written for the song [originally]. Jeremy Lubbock was chosen to do the arrangement on the strings and I think that had a lot to do with the final outcome of the song. He did a great job,” says the producer.

Marshall completed her rough cut of the film but wasn’t ready to show it to any of the actors yet. Landers was driving down Doheny Boulevard in Los Angeles with a copy of the film when a car pulled alongside his and he realized it was Madonna, driving herself somewhere. “I rolled down the window and held up the tape and said, 'You are so terrific in this movie! You’re going to be so happy!’ She chased me all the way down Doheny and at the next red light said, 'Who are you? Can I see the movie?’ And I said, 'No, I’m sorry,’ and drove away.”

Talking Family, Fans and Thunderstorms with MLB All-Star @miketrout

For personal photos from a superstar athlete, follow @miketrout on Instagram.

Twenty-three-year-old Mike Trout (@miketrout) is baseball’s reigning American League MVP. He signed a $144.5 million contract in 2014, and will be up for another deal before he turns 30. And yet, his feed reveals a regular guy who loves his job, his family, his young fans and, interestingly enough, weather.

“Growing up, I always watched the weather with my dad,” Mike says of his father, former minor leaguer Jeff Trout. “He got me hooked. I love watching it snow and any kind of thunderstorm.” Naturally, the first photo he shared from Cincinnati, where he is now to play in his fourth All-Star Game, was of pedestrians caught in the rain.

The superstar athlete loves his young fans, who make art and signs for him all the time. “It’s always cool to see how creative fans can get. I appreciate it. It’s humbling!” he says. One child actually has a net that Mike tosses a ball into every home game that’s known as — what else? — the “Trout Net!” “What’s cool is [the kid] always finds a new fan to give a ball to,” Mike says.

Mike’s most important little fans may be his sister Teal’s two kids. In one of the many personal photos he has posted, he was practicing letters with his niece. “I try to be the best uncle there is so I spoil her pretty good,” he says.

This week, Mike will get a few days off for the All-Star celebrations. Then it’s back to work trying to lead his team, the first-place Los Angeles Angels, back to the playoffs. Still, he doesn’t boast about having such an outstanding 2015 so far. (Eighty-eight games into the season, he already has 26 home runs, compared to his career high of 36, which he hit last year in 157 contests.) “I love the game,” Mike says. “I do my best to play it the right way. When you go out there and have fun, good things will happen.”

@ARLBostonRescue saves a turtle in trouble due to the strange NE weather trends.

We’ve been having crazy weather around here. it is super warm, then a lot of snow, then super warm, and then kinda in the middle. This makes the humans crazy! They don’t know if they should put the spring/summer clothes away or not. Mre importantly? This affects our cold-blooded friends the most! In their case its not just about what to wear it’s about how their bodies help keep them alive!

Thankfully, the great people at the American Rescue League care about all animals that need assistance. From fur beasts stuck in a tree to shelled friends in a lake. We’re so glad this snappy got a hand <3.

I built my career based on pure insistence
Stubbornness. If there is one word to describe how I got here, that would be stubbornness. Of course, talent, dedication, and taking absolute advantage of all the opportunities I had, all of this made

Having the opportunity to defend the yellow jersey in yet another competition, and one of this scale, to me seems like an award for all the sweat I shed throughout my career. The difficulties and praise in Sweden, the learning I made in the American Soccer League, playing for Pelé’s Santos, all the records, victories and defeats with the National Team. A few days before the opening of the Olympics, I feel that my entire career was written just for me to get here.

Casey Candaele makes his major league debut, pinch-hitting for the Expos in a 7-3 loss to Philadelphia at Olympic Stadium. With this appearance, the versatile utility man and his mom, Helen Callaghan, a former left-handed center fielder in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, become the only mother and son to have both played professional baseball.
