I really do believe that at least part of the problem of people distrusting science has to do with how we as scientists portray ourselves.

We have actively created a system where we derive authority from being seen as better/smarter/more competent than everyone else and then when people ask why they should trust us we respond with a very condescending version of ‘because SCIENCE IS FACT’ or something along those lines.

Like, consider how that would feel from the outside? Here are a small group of people who you have never met/interacted with who sequester themselves in impenetrable ~elite institutions that you can’t access and don’t feel party to who then tell you that what they say is fact because they’re smarter and better educated than you. And if you ever try to question them (no matter how reasonable your objections may be/seem to you) they condescendingly pat you on the head and say something like ‘don’t worry we know better. you can’t possibly understand what we do.’

Why the hell would you trust them? 

No one likes being told that they’re not smart enough to understand something, and no one likes feeling excluded from something they’ve essentially been asked to accept sight unseen. 

I don’t really have a solution to this, except some vague notion about working harder to portray scientists as people working a job, rather than geniuses who are above it all. 

And like trying harder to understand where people are coming from when they question science. And remembering that being better educated than most doesn’t make us smarter than most. It just makes us better trained in certain types of thinking.

I just think we need to keep in mind what we are asking of people. Which is to put a whole hell of a lot of faith in us.

All jokes aside I think it’s really amazing how Hebrew was literally brought back to life by a bunch of enthusiasts and how what once was essentially a dead language is spoken nowadays by millions of people

I hear it on the streets and can’t stop thinking about how just a couple of centuries ago nobody was speaking it, and now it’s living and breathing just like any other natural language, with modern words and slang and shitty pop songs and children learning their first words in it

But it is also thousands of years old technically

Song Review: Taylor Swift’s ‘Look What You Made Me Do’

Well, it’s not just the lipstick that got darker. Taylor Swift sounds like she is never, ever getting back together with her old ingénue image in “Look What You Made Me Do,” the first piece of fresh solo music she’s released since 2014. This is hardly Swift’s first time playing defense in song, but the tone of the tune is intended to get you thinking the bad blood she sang about three years ago has seeped a little deeper into her bone marrow. For these three-and-a-half minutes, at least, she’s an even badder Type A.

This introductory track from her upcoming “reputation” album (due out Nov. 10; the small R is hers) feels like the un-celebratory flip side to the previous album’s leadoff single, “Shake It Off.” The catharsis and playfulness are a little harder to pick out in this one, though they’re there, if you listen hard enough, amid some textures and lyrics that sound a little on the grim side on first listen, and maybe second or third play, too. “I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time,” she sings, in case anyone is still imagining her with that 2006 curl in her hair.

But if you’re au courant enough on all things Taylor to think that maybe those short clips of snakes she started posting the other day represented a desire for some skin-shedding, or that she really intended to send a signal when she wiped all her social media clean, Swift essentially confirms that with a spoken-word aside here: “I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, because she’s dead!”

Actually, it’s not just that late interlude that’s spoken-word; it’s the entire chorus, which consists of the title phrase, slightly amended, repeated over and over, over a throbbing-bass rhythm, as if she and producer Jack Antonoff had designs on doing an electro-clash update of the boom-car classic “Supersonic.”  (It’s the writers of Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy” who get a co-writing credit for a perceived similarity, though.) It’s part of the cleverness of the song that the tune’s pre-chorus seems to be building up to something big, only to drop into something so flatly stated, steely-eyed, and subwoofer-based. Whatever grander hooks she has in store (and based on past experience, you’d have to imagine there will be plenty on “reputation”) will have to wait until after this alluringly scowling teaser trailer of a single.

Who’s it about? Given how little of Swift’s previous work belongs in the fiction category, it’s a reasonable question, and one that’ll probably break certain sections of the Internet for at least the next few days. “How you laugh when you lie / You said the gun was mine” could be about a certain celebrity ex who publicly cast blame on her for a breakup, or about a certain perennial sparrer who leaked her phone calls to the world. Maybe the net should be cast wider, to a whole world of haters, as Swift sings about karma and adds, distressingly: “I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me.” That’s plasma, not tears, on her (MIA) guitar.

But it’s not exactly a victim song. “Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time” is the ultimate I-eat-feuders-like-you-for-breakfast line. And it’s a sign that, besides undoubtedly being legitimately angry, she’s still having a bit of fun here. “Look What You Made Her Do” makes the superstar sound like a tougher chick than the tougher chick we were already getting to know, but there’s also the undeniable element of Swift being a girl who just wants to have fun… the fun, that is, of playing around with her own fury.

I’ve heard a few people say the Tay character that crashes the Maserati and is at the end “getting receipts” is throwing shade at a certain someone (we all know who and that’s not the point)… I think it’s actually playing on the rumour that Taylor  does everything for attention. Like, the paparazzi are there at the crash because she called them, everything she does is for attention. None of the Taylor Swift characters in the video are meant to represent other people; they all represent the false or incomplete images people have of Swift herself.

I finished up The Adventure Zone the other day and boy howdy was it an emotional ride. The podcast and this good good family mean a lot to me. If you haven’t listened, I’d strongly recommend it. It uh…just finished up, so watch out for spoilers, but I guarantee you’re gonna have a good time.

I get that every fandom dwindles eventually, especially one with no new content ahead, but man, I’d hate to see this fandom die out. I mean, I don’t think Killjoys will ever be completely forgotten–people still dedicate blogs to the Revenge era and that was 13 years ago, lol. But I really enjoy the creativity in this fandom and don’t want to see it disappear.

something that always struck me as odd about the prequels is how palpatine was able to forge a relationship with anakin in the first place.

this is definitely my biggest problem with the jedi, in relation to anakin: they let palpatine, a middle aged man, get anakin, a child, alone. the fact that palpatine’s even insistent on it at all should be ringing alarm bells. there should be Stranger Danger warnings going off, people! you’re dropping the ball, men!

and i understand that, according to the comics, palpatine threw his political weight around, saying that the senate has total control over the jedi. that you can’t deny the chancellor. but that’s incorrect - the republic is corrupt, but it’s not a dictatorship yet. as anakin’s legal guardians, the council has the full right to refuse palpatine access to anakin - it doesn’t matter who’s knocking at your door, you’re supposed to protect your charge. 

but the jedi handed him over. the second palpatine pressed, they folded; and no one tried to curb anakin’s interaction with palpatine, even though it should be clear that an old man wanting to talk with a minor day after day after day is suspicious. especially since the jedi were suspicious of palpatine anyway

Beyond hope?

Time for me to blabber about Mutsuki some more because #whynot I see a lot of people saying he’s too far gone to be redeemed, and while his actions are certainly disturbing and someone needs to stop him soon (and he will face consequences for them), I just really, really don’t think “too far gone” fits with the themes of the manga, or with Mutsuki’s character. I could of course be wrong, but we’ve seen plenty of other characters come back from similar acts. (This isn’t to bash any of these characters, because I pretty much love almost all of TG’s characters–except for, like, Tokage et al–and it isn’t to say that people have to like or root for/can’t be mad at Mutsuki; it’s fine for people to have their own opinions.)

We have seen several characters try to kill a main character’s human best friend or romantic interest for purely selfish reasons and go on to be redeemed:

We’ve also seen Kaneki use Shiono against Eto in a similar fashion to how Mutsuki’s using Yoriko, and Shiono actually wound up dead. It is terrible and not okay in any of these circumstances, but it didn’t make Kaneki past the point of no return.

We have seen a violent, sadistic murderer character romantically obsessed with Kaneki to an unhealthy point go on to recover:

Hell, Shuu even helped plan Kaneki and Touka’s wedding celebration for them. Good job, Shuu.

While I desperately hope Mutsuki does not kill Yomo because I love Yomo and the idea of him dying makes me feel sick (and I’m honestly not sure Mutsuki will kill Yomo; if he does I’ll be mad at him but still root for him), we have seen someone who killed a loved one who sacrificed themselves for a main character be forgiven by that character and work alongside them:

Kaneki deliberately chose to ensure that Karren would sacrifice herself for Shuu in order to spare Shuu and Ui. Shuu forgave him for that, and it’s also worth remembering that Amon and Akira forgave Touka for killing Kureo, and Hinami helped Kaneki save Akira even though she knew her father killed her parents.

We’ve seen characters who suffer from mental disturbances engage in acts of extreme violence (including against former friends) and go on to grow:

Takizawa (and Tsukiyama actually) I never thought would get any kind of redemption, and look at him (them) now. You could argue that some of these situations are framed slightly differently by the narrative, but many of them are not. And I haven’t even brought up all the things characters like Kaneki, Amon, Ayato, and Touka have come back from (Touka and Ayato were my original favourite murder children in this series). One of my favourite things about Tokyo Ghoul is how morally gray every single character is–no one is fully evil and no one is fully heroic.

I kind of think the fact that characters are never beyond the point of no return is one of the points of Tokyo Ghoul. Characters who are narratively beyond that point (Furuta) still have shades of gray in them and complex motivations, and the story makes clear it’s their choices that are paving their paths to destruction (which seems to be exactly what Furuta, for example, wants anyways, as he’s essentially given up on ever receiving any kind of love). Characters who want love and a place to belong and prioritize finding it–however messed up, counterproductive, and downright wrong that prioritizing might be–usually do find it eventually, even if it’s not where they expected to find it. Additionally, characters who have people who care about them in particular tend to recover. I’m not saying I see a happy ending for everyone, or even for Mutsuki specifically, but I do expect him to find some peace even if he doesn’t survive the manga, since that’s most consistent with the manga’s themes. 

Look, if my romance and sex repulsed ass can respect your decision to ship people, can you please return the favor and let me see everyone as friends??
