that one scene in black sheep

Kai deserves better

I’m so happy to be able to see my favourite character Kai back but at the same time it sucks. It sucks that we have to see him go through the same bullshit again. In season 6 he opened up to Bonnie about his past and about how his family treated him like an abomination. Yet she still didn’t want anything to do with him and didn’t bother giving him a chance. In a deleted scene of season 6 he confronted Jo about how he was the “black sheep” and how everyone treated him like shit yet she still didn’t want anything to do with him and still saw him as this monster even though Kai was obviously trying to redeem himself and gain forgiveness from everyone. This season he’s opened up to Caroline about the same thing. And even admits that he “chose to become a sociopath”. This just proves that if his ridiculous family hadn’t treated him like he was abnormal then he wouldn’t be a “sociopath”. I hate how no one else on the show can see this. All Kai has ever wanted was to be treated the same way that Jo has been treated her whole life. Jo has never had to deal with the shit Kai’s gone through. All because she got lucky. It absolutely sickens me that Kai could open up his heart and soul to someone, try to gain their forgiveness, tell them he feels guilty about the things he’s done to them yet they’d still hate him and believe that he’s “irredeemable”. What’s even worse is the fact that that same person would choose to be friends with Damon, who’s made way more kills, done more hurt knowing the difference between good and bad since he’s not a “sociopath”.

Quick cholx trend rant

Alright yallllllll, I’m so sick of seeing this cholx style being in trend and romanticized. As someone who comes from a family of cholxs and struggled to not fall into that scene, it’s ugly and disrespectful to see these high class ppl (both white and poc) that have never even probably interacted with a gang member just dress like them. I’m the black sheep because I’m the “good one,” the one that went to college, and as much as I love my family, they made me feel so isolated and pressured to join them. I had to force myself to stay away so I could make a name out of myself and not fall Into their steps of drugs, incarceration, and overall trouble. So to see these USC Instagram kids embrace this style like it ain’t nothing really hurts. Am I making any sense??? Please someone tell me I’m not alone.

The above mural was painted by James Huberty’s father, Earl, in his local church and when describing the scene, he related the black sheep to his son.

“I painted 11 white sheep and a good shepherd there patting one on the head and I painted a black sheep walking away from the flock. I thought to myself that one is going to be in trouble, and I was thinking of Jim.”

I truly resent the TVD writers for ruining Kai Parker. He was the best thing to ever happen to that show especially after the tragedy that was season 5. The writers made it clear that Kai was not capable of redemption but they excuse Damon’s actions?! Damon has killed more people than Kai don’t even fight me on this. Kai had to spend 18 years in isolation, was rejected by his family and tried to make amends with Bonnie yet he’s not capable of redemption?! I don’t have anything against Damon but they are pretty much the same person so idk what is going through the writers’ minds. Also I’m so mad that they deleted the most significant scene of the season. The scene where Kai explains to Jo that he felt like a black sheep because no one wanted him was such a masterpiece and proved that Kai had a sense of humanity and could be saved. But no they had to ruin a perfectly good character development opportunity. Then after that they decided to screw him over AGAIN by trapping him in another prison world after he was trying to show Bonnie how sorry he was. And then when you thought the writers couldn’t screw him over even more they gave him the least interesting death ever. If you’re going to kill off a major character like Kai at least make it worth it. Make it memorable. Make it the most groundbreaking death of the entire show. Instead he was decapitated by Damon which makes no sense as Kai is an all powerful heretic with heighten senses so he would’ve sensed Damon coming from behind. And then when they finally bring him back in season 8 they put him in ANOTHER prison world?! The writers had such such a great opportunity to develop Kai’s character but instead they decided to destroy any chance of that happening because apparently we’re not allowed to have nice things. Kai deserves better.

Do you happen to know some newer fics with predominantly top Draco and bottom Harry apart from the ones of the dracotopsharry fest? 💕

I generally rec fairly new fics. Here are some:

Bruises to the soul - casknowsaboutwizards

After the war, Harry struggles with the aftermath of his fight with Voldemort at the battle of Hogwarts. Hermione forces him to see a Mind Healer but after his first difficult appointment, he no longer needs her to coerce him into going every single week. Indeed, Draco Malfoy is also a patient and he’s nothing Harry thought he’d be.

Black Sheep - JStevens

“Black sheep is a derogatory colloquialism in the English language meaning an outsider or one who is different in a way which others disapprove of. This can be someone who has been shunned by others, or one who has chosen to be an outsider, due to actions and aims that separate them from the rest of the people or ‘flock.’”

Harry Potter and his Boyfriend’s Massive Cock - _Melodic_

Draco’s enormous cock must be to blame for Harry’s helpless stirrings of passion and desire. Not that he’s complaining, of course…

Fisting Fun - wonderussam

Draco fists Harry during one of their scenes.

[Bruce, Jason, & Damian Panels] The New 52′s “Convergence: Batman and Robin” (2015)

Writers have shown us time and time again that fatherhood does not come easy to one Bruce Wayne. It definitely wasn’t easy raising a Dick Grayson or a Tim Drake, let alone a Jason Todd or a Damian Wayne, even with Alfred Pennyworth around. (Not to mention his “daughters” and other less-troublesome “sons”). But we’ve gotta hand it to the ol’ Bat - he never stops trying.

This miniseries is aptly entitlted “Fathers & Sons”, and it’s easily becoming one of my favorites.

We’ve seen the pattern of resentment among the Robins that comes with feeling replaced. All the four (main) Batboys have gone through it at one point in their vigilante careers: Dick with Jason; Jason with Tim; Tim with Damian. And now, interestingly, Damian with Jason?

You’d think that the li’l former assassin would have gotten over his insecurities after having proven himself a more-than-capable Robin to both Bruce and Dick… Perhaps, it’s a testosterone thing? Or possessiveness over their father?

Whatever the reason, it paves the way for combination angst-and-fluff interactions that I absolutely adore!

A little backstory (and some spoilers):

“Convergence” was a company-wide DC Universe crossover event during the New 52 run focused on Braniac’s obsession with collecting cities from ended timelines and trapping them in domes on a planet outside of space and time. It has several spin-offs, including this two-issue one.

In a domed Gotham City, Batman and Robin rescue Poison Ivy from some rogues. She had been cultivating Robinson park in order to feed the citizens for free, and her colleagues basically saw it as bad for criminal business. When Killer Croc attacks Batman, Red Hood (with his assistant Duela Dent, a.k.a. Scarlet) shows up unexpectedly and saves him.

“Jason… Todd? Why’s he here?”

In the next set of panels, both Bruce and Damian question Jason’s sudden appearance - but probably for different reasons. Bruce seems genuinely curious but welcoming, while Damian’s more he’s-not-supposed-to-be-here.

If spiders terrify you, you’re not alone. Most of us agree they are horrifying, unsettling little poisonous things, and if you think differently we have bad news: When spiders can’t smell fear in a human, they wait until they’re asleep and crawl into their ears and mouth. Anyone not scared of spiders has at least 12 of them living and nesting inside their body at any time.

And while we’re sharing fun facts about spiders, one of the most ferocious family of spiders is Sparassidae. They’re known as Huntsman spiders and they’re not only leaping, agile predators; they’re pants-shittingly huge.

But every family has an embarrassing member and the black sheep of the Sparassidae clan is the flic-flac spider. It was discovered by Professor Dr. Ingo Rechenberg less than 10 years ago during a Moroccan desert jaunt, and it’s fucking stupid. The flic-flac somehow, after generations of hunting desert prey, adapted itself to travel by lunatic cartwheel.

fictionandmusic  asked:

(im sorry for sending three asks in a row, this is the last one i swear) i saw you posted about under appreciated scenes, which made me think of one i just rewatched from season 2. in "Poison Ivy" 1x03 after chuck takes pics of serena coming out of the Ostroff Center and he's looking at them with blair and at some point he tells her she "doesn't get enough credit for her wit" and it's so cute and she smiles so much and it's just classic chuck and blair schemeing

Haha, it’s totally fine; I love talking about CB with people in this fandom! :’) And thanks for the suggestion :D That’s a great scene; it’s so representative of how close their friendship is. Even before they got together, there was this underlying sense of trust and respect, and they’ve always recognized strengths in one another that nobody else has acknowledged. That’s so key to their relationship because both of them are considered “black sheep” in a way because they’re both overshadowed by the people in their lives and are considered too ‘dark’ for the UES. They work so well together because they immediately recognize and appreciate what’s good about each other as well as what’s bad. I’ll definitely add that scene to my list of underappreciated scenes to gif :)

My Flower’s up There Somewhere(2014) linoleum print

The little prince was now quite pale with rage. “For millions of years flowers have been producing thorns. For millions of years sheep have been eating them all the same. And it’s not serious, trying to understand why flowers go to such trouble to produce thorns that are good for nothing? It’s not important, the war between the sheep and the flowers? It’s no more serious than the numbers that fat red gentleman is adding up? Suppose I happen to know a unique flower, one that exists no where in the world except on my planet, one that a little sheep can wipe out in a single bite one morning, just like that, without even realizing what he’s doing- that isn’t important?” His face turned red now, and he went on. “If Someone loves a flower of which just one example exists among all the millions and millions of stars, that’s enough to make him happy when he looks at the stars. He tells himself, "My flower’s up there somewhere…” But if the sheep eats the flower, then for him it’s as if, suddenly, all the stars went out. And that isn’t important?“

I didn’t know how to reach him, where to find him… it’s so mysterious the land of tears.

Print I did for my illustration class where we had to do a black and white linoleum print based off a scene in a classic book so I chose one of my all time favorites: The Little Prince.

I’m gonna print editions of this to sell if anyone is interested UuU I’m thinking of selling a number that are black and white and a few that I’ll color certain parts of the picture like the flowers and petals.

anonymous asked:

Hey! Would you write about Amelia´s mom and sisters coming to see her when it´s christmas. Amelia is sick but her mom and sisters don´t know that and Owen is there for her (they have been together like 2 weeks or something and nobody knows about this) ? :)

“Take the pills.”
“No.”
“Amelia, take the pills.”
“I don’t want pain killers, Owen.”
“They’re not even narcotics!” Owen huffed, inching the glass and two pills closer to her. Although he admired and respected her sobriety, two non-addictive pills couldn’t possibly be so bad, “Just take them. They’ll help you feel better.” She took the tablets from him and just when he thought he’d finally gotten her to help herself, she threw them across the room, returning beneath the covers. “Really, Amelia?” Owen rhetorically asked, walking out of the room, “I’m going to make some soup, and you’re going to eat it, okay?”
“Who’s going to make me?” she yelled, the comforter muffling her voice. She closed her eyes and tried to ignore the sound of the doorbell infiltrating her bedroom and the way it caused her head to pound violently. Maybe she should’ve taken the Advil.

“Hello,” Owen said, surprised at the people outside the door.
“Surprise! Merry Christmas!” the eldest woman exclaimed.
“Who’s he?” one of the other four women asked, sizing him up.
“I-I’m Owen,” he replied, sticking out his hand awkwardly, “Owen Hunt.”
“Nancy,” the woman replied, shaking his hand, “Why are you in my little brother’s house with an apron on?”
“Nancy Shepherd?” Owen asked, dumbfounded.
“Yes,” the dark haired Shepherd replied, putting on a fake smile, “and this is my mother, Carolyn, and my two sisters Lizzy and Kate.”
“Amelia is sick,” Owen said, answering Nancy’s initial question after greeting the other two sisters and Carolyn, “I’m taking care of her, kinda.”
“So you’re the nurse, then?” Nancy accused, inviting herself in, “Amy could never take care of herself.” The other three followed behind, taking off their coats and hanging them on the rack nearby.
“Um, actually I’m-” Owen tried, but was cut off.
“Where’s Derek?” Kate asked, looking around and marvelling at the dream house.
“They’re out Christmas shopping with the kids. They should be home soon,” Owen replied awkwardly.
“Hey guys, look who I found,” Lizzy yelled from down the hall. Owen hadn’t even noticed the sister had strayed. The Shepherds and Owen followed Lizzy’s voice down the hall to the room where Amelia lay hidden under her covers, some of her hair and a stray arm hanging out.
“Lizzy?” Amelia croaked, rising from beneath the covers to see her sister, “what are you doing here?”
“We came to visit for the holidays, silly,” Kate interjected, entering the room with Nancy and Carolyn in tow.
“Kate? Mom?” Amelia asked confused, then when she saw the last person to come through the bedroom door, she closed her eyes and almost cried, “Oh god, is that Nancy?”
“I’m happy to see you too,” Nancy remarked sarcastically.
“It’s like I can never get a break,” she whispered, pinching the bridge of her nose.

“Wait, so you’re not the nurse?” Nancy inquired, her eyebrows knitted together.
Amelia looked at Owen making soup in the background and then laughed and sniffled, “You thought HE was a nurse?”
“Well, you tend to shoot pretty lo-”
“Nancy,” Carolyn sternly said, holding her hand up in the air. Nancy looked away begrudgingly. Despite the many years they’d lived apart, the Shepherds still maintained their respect for their mother. This also meant that Carolyn knew the look on her daughter’s face when she had picked up something that she didn’t want to put back down. She’d seen the way she was looking at Owen since they’d been in the same room together.
“He’s a trauma surgeon,” she muttered under her breath, avoiding looking at her eldest sister. Her head was really starting to thump now.
“How long have you two been doing the bump and grind?” Kate teased, raising one of her eyebrows up and down, to which Amelia responded with a blush.
“We’ve been dating a couple weeks,” she said, looking back at Owen again.
Nancy scoffed and smirked, “New world record?”
“What’s your problem?” the youngest sister asked angrily.
“Calm down, black sheep, I was just joking.”
“I swear I’m going to-” Owen stepped in, tugging lightly on Amelia’s elbow. “Don’t make a scene,” he whispered softly, “sisters are supposed to tease.”
“And you would know, right?” she retorted, adding quickly after, “sorry.”
“Geez, Nancy. Did you always have such a thick stick up your ass?” Lizzy joked, trying to lighten the mood between the eldest and youngest of the Shepherd brood.
“I know where Amy sticks hers,” she teased, causing all individuals in the kitchen to stop what they were doing.

“You have to write a list to Santa Claus, Zozo,” Derek said to his daughter, unbuckling her from her seatbelt.
“Will you help me, daddy?” Zola asked, showing her puppy dog eyes at him, which he couldn’t resist.
He looked at Meredith, who smirked at him, and then looked back at the little girl, “Of course I will.” Zola grinned widely as she walked hand in hand with her father to the front door, Meredith trailing behind with Bailey and Ellis.
“Do you hear something?” Meredith inquired when they got closer to the porch, unaware of the wrestling match about to occur behind the closed doors.
“Actually-”
“Fuck you, Nancy!” a woman yelled from inside, loud enough for them to hear.
“Crap,” Derek muttered, frantically searching for his keys to unlock the door.
“Nancy?” Meredith questioned, “Derek, is your family-”
“My family is here,” he replied,
relieved and yet unrelieved when he finally opened the door, revealing the entire Shepherd herd. Owen was basically body blocking a coughing, sneezing Amelia while she threw fists, insults and death threats at Nancy. Unlike Derek, Owen was entirely new to the feistiness of the Shepherd women and was basically begging Derek for help with his eyes as he continued his tactic to keep Amelia out of prison.
“Just like old times,” Derek muttered under his breath walking to his mother first to give her a hug, then to Kate and Lizzy, and finally stopping in front of Nancy. “You just love to provoke her, don’t you?” Derek stated, folding his arms disapprovingly.
“Always nice to see you, little brother,” Nancy replied, plastering a fake smile on her face and patting Derek on his shoulder.
“Owen, move,” Amelia insisted, trying to push Owen’s beefy arms away, “I just want to hug my beloved sister.”
“I doubt that,” Owen said, holding Amelia by her shoulders. Then, to Derek, he asked, “Are they always like this?”
“Since Nancy knew her in the womb,” Derek joked.
“Welcome to the family,” Carolyn added, smiling brightly, despite the tension.

Day 65 of the Season 4 Hiatus - Favorite Scenes

Everyone has someone on the docks.  Even the Dark One.  Yet Regina knows she doesn’t.  She knows no one is waiting for her.  She’s accepted that.  She’s done what she needed to do to get Henry home and she isn’t expecting any recognition for what she did.

Certainly not from Snow who has been treating her like the embarrassing black sheep, perhaps even poisonous element, of the family since they got to Neverland.  But something has changed in Snow and she watches Regina on the dock (and she continues to watch her lovingly at the party too), as if she’s finally seeing the woman she loved peaking out of the darkness.

“We owe a lot of it to her.  Regina helped save us all.”

Now I know many Evil Regals would like it to have been even more credit, but look at how shocked Regina is at just this much acknowledgement.  To me this is the real beginning of rebuilding a friendship that was meant to be, destroyed by Cora and the twisting of Regina’s mind, and I think one of the most important relationships on the show.

And now compare this to her httyd1 self, where she actually shows interest in EVERYTHING,not just interest in Hiccup. Where she is an independent character, not a pretty girlfriend who’s face is supposed to look beautiful all the time even if she is angry or upset.

Oh,the last picture also shows how happy she is that her boyfriend’s dad died.

This post is meant to be a thought out, hopefully much less sarcastic response to concerns raised about Astrid’s treatment in HTTYD2. If you want some context you can find, my initial, highly sarcastic response to the original post here (I apologize in advance for the way my current theme destroys pics and gifs). Please do not send any hate to the OP, the concerns raised don’t mean that they hate Astrid. Anyways, it’s a bit long-winded, so if you get bored half way in, just scroll down to the bottom for a handy list of takeaways about what Astrid’s role in HTTYD2 says about girl/women’s roles in films. Disclaimer taken care of, here’s a look inside my brain:

Well, I am going to have to agree with you about how animators tend to forget to ugly their characters, especially their lead female characters, when they’re sad or angry. Both Disney and DreamWorks are guilty of this.

But I have to disagree with just about everything else there. That’s not to say that we can’t still see a few issues with the roles women play on screen in Astrid’s character…but I’m getting ahead of myself. This might be a long post though, you’ve hit on a franchise, a character, and an issue that I care very much about. You’re welcome to check out now, but you got me thinking about some things and I think they’re good things to think about.

First, I want to establish a couple of basic things:

  1. I love Disney. I love Baymax. I love Big Hero 6. The role of this post is not to bash any of these, but to examine Astrid’s role in HTTYD2 and how I interpret it.
  2. Both of the Dragons movies feature Hiccup as the main protagonist. Not the only protagonist, but the main one. This means that both HTTYD and HTTYD2 are in storytelling terms his story. All the other storylines introduced are meant to support his storyline in one way or another (this does include any “antagonists” in a story, otherwise our main wouldn’t have anything to do). Even Astrid’s. Even Toothless’. If any other characters take the main spotlight, you have an issue with your storytelling. AND THIS is where we come to the real issue: simply writing MORE strong female characters in action/adventure films (as opposed to TV shows) is not enough—it helps, but the playing field is still unequal. What we need are MORE strong female characters as the MAIN PROTAGONIST. Sadly, Astrid is not the main protagonist in either movie, so that means that yes, her role is going to revolve around how she affects Hiccup. Everyone’s role in both movies revolves around how they affect Hiccup. This does not make her any less independent as a character.
  3. Hiccup’s presence in a scene DOES NOT discount any emotion or reaction Astrid may have. He can have a profound effect on her emotions, but Astrid’s emotions, whether they are directed at, experienced in the presence of or brought about by Hiccup are still profound and completely her own.
  4. Clearly, if you’ve seen the movie, you know that last still is a look of bittersweet pride as Hiccup steps into the shoes that his father wanted him to fill.
  5. I am writing this to explain my way of thinking. If it changes some of how you see this, even if it’s only a little, great. If it doesn’t, I hope it’ll help you understand my viewpoint better and perhaps build a bridge.

Okay, so Astrid. Astrid in HTTYD2. And the above concerns regarding Astrid in HTTYD2

Let’s be clear, Astrid is not just the “girlfriend”. Storytelling purposes aside, she is an equal partner. Hiccup doesn’t tell her to stay behind when they get into danger. His words are “Be careful” not “Stay here”. This is important. How many times have you watched a movie and the male lead tells the female lead to stay in the car. Female lead never listens 95% of the time, so I don’t know why we even bother with that trope anymore.

The point here: Astrid decides to go after Hiccup when he tries to leave her behind on Berk. Astrid decides, “Screw orders” when Stoick, Hiccup, and Gobber go AWOL—not to mention that Astrid is the one the other riders follow in the absence of both chief and son. Astrid kidnaps Eret. Astrid comes up with her own plan to save Berk (it obviously backfires, but still, she does try to negotiate for her and her friends lives instead of giving up). Astrid teaches Eret how to ride a dragon. Astrid leads the initial strike against Drogo’s forces (Some might argue that Eret does, but I think he’s a little busy not falling off Stormfly to think battle strategy).

Astrid. Not Hiccup, Astrid.

She doesn’t need Hiccup to act or to lead. She does it all on her own. Does he save her from certain death a couple of times? Yes. Because everyone knows shippers go bananas for that trope. Do I wish that we’d gotten to see Astrid save Hiccup from certain death a couple of times like she does in HTTYD? Oh yeah. Definitely. I am an equal opportunity supporter of ship tropes. Switch up those gender roles, still romantic in my book.

There’s more of a chance of this happening on the TV show, which has much more time than a movie totaling less than two hours. After all, for those of us that have seen HTTYD (and the TV show) Astrid’s character is already established. We’re meant to bring what we already know with us into this movie. There just isn’t time to start from the beginning and tell a new story. Astrid took a back seat, but, as I’ll get to, that doesn’t make her any less important as a character or to the story (and reagardless of gender it always comes down to a character’s usefulness to the main plot, even the main protags).

And here we get to the crux of the matter. Since Hiccup’s story focuses on his relationship with his parents, specifically with Valka, we don’t see as much of Astrid. She remains a part of the story, but she isn’t in the background of half the shots like she is in the first movie. We don’t get to see her disgust at Hiccup for being an utter waste of space. We don’t get to see her passively sitting by while Snotlout teases Hiccup or her suspicion at his increasingly odd behavior and improved dragon wrangling.

I point to those examples not because I think Astrid is an awful person in the first movie, Hiccup’s continual ineptitude endangers both her and her friends, but to point out that even in HTTYD, Astrid’s behavior revolves around Hiccup. Because once again, it is his story.

That doesn’t mean we don’t get to see some of Astrid’s interests in HTTYD2, but they are basically the same as in HTTYD: Dragons and Hiccup. Only now, instead of spending most the movie wanting to kill dragons, she’s riding them, racing them, and saving them.

So what are some of the emotions/interests that we get from Astrid in HTTYD2? And are they all Hiccup-centric. No. And just because I have a thing for lists, here is another list, involving emotions that are wholly Astrid’s:

  • Astrid’s love of dragon racing. We run a whole gamut in the just the first five minutes of the movie (I know, I just rewatched it because…well, why not?). We get frustration over Snotlout’s collusion with the twins, disbelief that he’s pursuing a relationship with a hostile Ruffnut, alarm as she goes to put out a Gronkle fire, excitement over the  release of the black sheep, determination to win despite the fact that it’s one against four, elation when she gets the black sheep, and pride when she wins. We get a strong, confident, BAMF Astrid before we even see Hiccup
  • Curiosity/concern. Hiccup may be the one to point out the dark cloud of smoke, but she’s just as interested as Hiccup is in what’s behind it.
  • Awe. When Hiccup and Astrid are telling Stoick about Eret’s trappers, she expresses wonder for whatever dragon damaged the fort. Again, Hiccup is in the scene, but Astrid’s focus is not him, but the spectacle that they discovered.
  • Self-satisfaction. Hiccup is nowhere to be found as Astrid congratulates herself for convincing Eret to help them.
  • Grief. This one does have a little bit to do with Hiccup, but I’d also argue that Astrid has her own reason to be sad over Stoick’s death. After all, he’s her chief. The person who probably defined what it meant to be a Viking for her entire village. (Maybe there were others, but we don’t get to see them.) And not just that, I imagine (I can’t remember if there is anything to back me up in the show) that Stoick and Astrid had a close relationship. His death doesn’t affect her as deeply it affects Hiccup, but it affects her deeply nonetheless.
  • Stormfly. After they get the dragons back, who is the first person Astrid reunites with? Her dragon. Not the boyfriend who was almost a Popsicle. Now, I think Astrid would have followed Hiccup back to Berk regardless, but her main motivation is saving village and her best friend. That’s why we get this reunion before we get that epic kiss. She’s so relieved to have Stormfly back that she forgets about her concern over Hiccup for a few minutes.

While the movie and the storylines do revolve around Hiccup, Astrid’s emotions, interests and world do not. They intersect, naturally, because when you’re in a relationship with someone (especially one like this where the two parties share many of the same interests) you are supposed to make them a priority.

That does not mean a character isn’t independent.

Astrid has a profound impact on the story. She isn’t there just to be the beautiful girlfriend. Yes, she fills the supportive girlfriend role more than once, but that’s because she is someone’s girlfriend and she is supportive (now that Hiccup has earned that support). Astrid is also the reason that Drago comes to Hiccup and not the other way around. She is the first person from the group to stand up to confront and stand up to Drago (whilst her other friends are cowering in terror, I might add). Without Astrid, you have a very different story (all other characters staying the same).

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that HTTYD2 fails the Bechdel test (and the first person to admit that my shipping trash status often clouds my judgment). But I’ve always believed that failing the Bechdel test says more about your plot and your world than it does about your characters. Does this mean that we need more face time and interaction between female characters? Yes. Does this mean that Astrid is a weak character? No.

But that’s my say, based on my experiences and my interpretation and my understanding of story structure.

Takeaways:

  1. We need more women as the main protagonist in action/adventure type movies.
  2. Just because a character is pretty, doesn’t mean they aren’t independent (as I believe was mentioned in the TV show).
  3. We need more Astrid kicking ass and taking names in HTTYD3. Extra points if she has to rescue Hiccup.
