that is still $600

K so I’m not done.

This is the year 2017 and I’m still having to yell about how ridiculous Maya extinction myths are and tell people we are ‘Maya’ not ‘Mayan’. I’m not saying shame shame if anyone reads this and didn’t know. I’m so angry concerning how slowly these issues are being picked up by educational institutions, at how often I have to bring these things up to higher education professors.

We are a massive massive group of peoples. One of the largest Indigenous groups in the Americas. Wikipedia cites 7 million or so of us total but honestly that’s way off because that’s about how many Maya folks there are in Guatemala alone.

We’re not dead. The Maya did not ‘mysteriously disappear’. We did not ‘fall’. We did not fade into obscurity. We’ve led revolts and rebellions against colonial powers for hundreds of years. We’ve had a big hand in shaping legislative definitions and protections for Indigenous Peoples in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

We haven’t lost our cultures. We’re constantly threatened and experience a lot of violence and have our resources stolen but we are still very much alive and our cultures have persisted.

And don’t even try me with the whole “Oh well we mean your CIVILIZATION disappeared, not you.” The structure of our societies and layout of our network changed and decentralized in many areas. That didn’t make us turn invisible. That didn’t make us not still be large in numbers with a relationship with our lands and lose influence in the areas we live. We still held power in large cities way after what people like to cite as “the fall of the Maya Civilization” (around 600-900 A.D. when we still had cities that we held power of until nearly 1700 when the last was “conquered” by Spain.)

Which brings me to the next issue. Being “conquered” or having a colonial government installed does not erase Indigenous societies or civilizations. That’s an extremely eurocentric way of thinking. We didn’t suddenly turn into Spaniards. We still had massive amounts of towns and villages with leaders. We still had our cultures, our trade, our networks, our influence, while Spain focused on putting up flags in our cities.

So yeah. All your history books have you all convinced that an extremely large group of people, with a greater population than more than half of the countries in Europe, all died out 1100 years ago.

Now try to imagine what kind of shit Indigenous Peoples with much less numbers and much lower access to resources go through.

Close Encounter with M44 : On Monday, January 26, well-tracked asteroid 2004 BL86 made its closest approach, a mere 1.2 million kilometers from our fair planet. Thats about 3.1 times the Earth-Moon distance or 4 light-seconds away. Moving quickly through Earths night sky, it left this streak in a 40 minute long exposure on January 27 made from Piemonte, Italy. The remarkably pretty telescopic field of view includes M44, also known as the Beehive or Praesepe star cluster in Cancer. Of course, its close encounter with M44 is only an apparent one, with the cluster nearly along the same line-of-sight to the near-earth asteroid. The actual distance between star cluster and asteroid is around 600 light-years. Still, the close approach to planet Earth allowed detailed radar imaging from NASAs Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, California and revealed the asteroid to have its own moon. via NASA

Nearly 500 bodies recovered from devastating Sierra Leone mudslide

Rescue workers have unearthed 499 dead bodies since last week’s devastating landslide near the Sierra Leone capital Freetown, the city’s chief coroner told Reuters on Sunday.

One of Africa’s worst flooding-related disasters in years occurred when the side of Mount Sugar Loaf collapsed on Monday after heavy rain, burying parts of Regent town and overwhelming relief efforts in one of the world’s poorest countries.

Authorities this week buried 461 bodies in quickly-dug graves in the nearby Waterloo cemetery, near the site of a mass burial for victims of the Ebola crisis that killed 4,000 people in the former British colony between 2014 and 2016.

Thirty-eight more bodies were found on Sunday, said chief coroner Seneh Dumbuya, bringing the official death toll to 499. They were being sent for immediate burial, he said.

The Red Cross said on Friday that over 600 are still missing.

An increasingly desperate search continued on Sunday on the steep hillside under the wet red mud, as the likelihood of finding survivors was all but extinguished. (Reuters)

Please Help

I don’t know if anyone out there will be willing to aid me, but at this point is worth it.

My name is Alice I’ve recently been hit with a nasty attack by the school that I’m indebted too. As of two weeks from this posting, my bank account will be levied, meaning that I will have absolutely no money left to my name. I currently have about half of my debt in the bank, but given my situation, I’m not really able to get any kind of extra money within a reasonable amount of time.

I’m currently basically living out of the home of my family, and employment opportunities that pay well enough to support myself and be a full-time student are damn near nil in the city I live in. Couple this in with being schizophrenic, hispanic and trans, and I’m pretty much completely fucked right now.

If anyone is kind enough to help me out, please send money to my paypal at bbrndt@live.com; the bare, bare, *bare* minimum I need is $600 to just pay the debt and still have nothing. But any little bit helps. I have 2 weeks from this day (March, 15, 2017) to pay it off. Thank you to anyone who can help.

Affordable Beginner Tablets Under $70 + Cintiq Alternatives

Lately I’ve come across younger artists wanting tablets but not being able to afford them, or get their parents to buy them. Which is totally understandable. My first tablet was a Wacom Bamboo and it was a lot for my parents at the time. Luckily, there’s more options now a days. So here’s a few good tablets that are affordable to start out with. Some of these aren’t Wacom and maybe aren’t as fancy as Wacom, but they will work just as fine.

Huion 4 x 2.23 Graphics Tablet

Quite a small tablet, but at $21 on Amazon, not too bad if you really want just a tablet.
