I shifted my face back into my own, raising a hand to my lips as Azriel knelt before her. I kept up my litany of praying, beseeching the Cauldron to make my womb fruitful, on and on— Azriel gently removed the gag from her mouth. “Are you hurt?” She shook her head, devouring the sight of him as if not quite believing it. “You came for me.” The shadowsinger only inclined his head.
the Rise of the Guardians art book says that Tooth’s design was inspired by “half-bird, half-human gods of ancient Buddhist and Hindu cultures” and off kinnaris - bird-human characters found in Thai mythology, so I wondered why they made her skin so light if she was based off characters from these cultures. I wondered what she would have looked like with brown skin.
this was more of a colour palette experiment, but personally I do think the browns work with the teals and greens better. I still do like DWA’s interpretation of the Tooth Fairy as it’s nice to see a Tooth Fairy that isn’t a blonde girl in a big dress
A/N: I’m not sire how I feel about this one, but I hope you like it anyway. In which Peter is not okay with his aunt dating other guys. Enjoy!
I was about to knock on the door when it flew open and I was face to face with a very dressed up May.
“Oh hey, sweetheart!”, she greeted me and waved me inside by stepping aside and I walked in with a shy smile.
“Looking great May. Where are you off to?”, I asked her while adjusting my books and folders under my arm.
“Thank you! I have kind of a date…Is it too much? I need an opinion but Peter is mad at me and won’t talk.”,she said and I could see the glimps of sadness in her eyes which made me sympathize with her.
“You look stunning. Don’t think about Peter. He is an ass sometimes.”,I said without thinking about it and she chuckled.
“Excuse my language.”,I added while blushing and she brushed it off.
“I gotta go. Dinner’s in the fridge, learn well, don’t do anything stupid. Keep it PG.”, she said while shouldering herself into her coat and my mouth dropped.
“Wha-…”,I started but was cut off by Peter.
“You too.” Oh he didn’t.
I looked over my shoulder to see him leaning against the door frame while his arms were crossed infront of his chest and his brows were furrowed.
“Peter!”,I exclaimed but he chose to ignore me and stared at his aunt.
“Thanks Peter.”,she sighed and closed the door behind her which made me turn around and glare at him.
“I’m not going to talk about this. Let’s get to our project.”
“You’re such a shit head, Peter.”,I said while following him into his room. Even though I would have loved to beat some sense into him, I let it go because it was a family matter.
I was lying across his bed on my belly with my laptop infront of me, scrolling through websites to find information about our project. Peter was on the floor, leaning against the bed skipping through some folders. Usually our learning and studying sessions were fun. We ended up laughing or talking about other stuff, while enjoying May’s home cooked food. But today it was really silent and I assumed it was because of Peters mood. I tried a few times to make him talk but he always answered in short sentences. Or just ‘uh-huh’ or ‘sure’, which was extremly tiring so I let it go.
“Did you know that if you throw a handfull of salt into a glas of water, the water level will actually go down rather than overflowing the glass.”, I read while scrolling through a website that was listing down interesting facts about chemistry.
“No I didn’t.”,he said without looking up and I put my laptop away to crawl over to him.
“Not that big of a genius after all, are you Peter?”, I teased him and my face was right next to his while I was holding on to his shoulders to not fall off the bed.
“I believe you’re not looking for answers for the project, are you Y/N? If you’re giving me those interesting facts.”,he shot back and I rolled my eyes.
“I was! But one led to the other and I landed…there. It’s quite interesting, you should check it out.”,I said in a chatting voice but he did not react to it so I looked over his shoulder and saw that he hadn’t done anything himself. He was just flicking through folders and notes without recognizing that they were not the right ones.
I slipped off the bed and sat down on the floor in front of him and took a few sheets lying all over the floor into my hands to look at them.
“Ah, Ap English. I didn’t know we were working on a literature project. I thought it was science?”,I said while holding the papers up and his head shot up, his eyes widened. He groaned and burried his face in his hands and brushed through his hair tugging at them.
“Regarding this I was a lot more close to the subject.”,I joked but when I saw that he was in no condition to take a joke, I brushed the papers away and slid closer to him.
“Hey.”,I said softly and put my hand on his wrist pulling his hand away from his face. I put a gentle kiss on top of his hand and held him in my lap.
“Talk to me.”,I offered and he groaned while throwing his head back.
“I know I am being a dick but I can’t handle the thought of Aunt May being with another man. She is all I have left after Uncle Ben….I can’t lose her too.”
“Oh come on Peter! You’re not going to lose her. IF it should work out with him, you’ll still be her number one priority. You guys are family. That’s what family is about. Don’t be stupid.”,I said and let his hand go because he didn’t seem to be convinced.
“It’s been years Peter. I’m not saying that you guys have to forget about your uncle or anything like that. No! But she deserves to find happiness too. She deserves to be loved.”,I added and he sighed.
“But I love her.”,he said and I chuckled at his childish manner.
“She loves you too. Would you want me to leave just because you’re aunt loves you already? Is it the same for you?”, I said with a small triumphant smile and he furrowed his brows.
“Of course it’s not the same. Ew I don’t want to be loved the way you hopefully do, from my aunt. No, gross.”, he said which made me laugh.
“See! But do you want me to stop loving you just because she does already, even if it is in another way?”, I asked again and he shook his head immediatly.
“No! I need you.”, he finally admitted and I cupped his face with my hand making him look into my eyes.
“So let her be loved, Peter. She is young. She could find happiness again.”,you said and he finally gave in. He exhaled deeply and leaned his forhead against mine.
“I was a dick to her, wasn’t I?”, he said with closed eyes and I chuckled.
“Damn it.”,he cursed under his breath and I gave him a peck on his lips.
“Don’t worry about it. You’ll make it up to her.”, I added and pulled away.
“You hungry? I’m really hungry.”,he said suddenly and I lifted my brows in amusement.
“Yeah, we worked so hard. We deserve a treat.”,I joked and he rolled his eyes.
“Shut up. And follow me.”,he said while getting up and helped me get up too.
We were sitting at the kitchen table, hours later, talking about stuff and still eating the food which got cold hours ago.
“So you’re saying that you still know your ex?”, Peter said and squinted his eyes while chewing doubtfully on his carrots.
“He is in my french class Peter. How am I supposed to not know him.”, I said rolling my eyes and wished that he would let go of the subject.
“He is, what now?”, he said his mouth ajar and you sighed theatrically while looking up at the ceiling.
“I’m so full. We should get back.”,I said and quickly stood up while taking the plates off the table. I put them into the sink and when I turned around he was standing right in front of me.
“Hi.”,I said innocently and tucked my hair behind my ear not knowing what to do with my hands.
“He does know your not available, doesn’t he?”,he asked finally and put his hands on my hips.
“We were 13 Peter. I am pretty sure he is over me. I am for sure over him. We’re almost eighteen now.”, I told him and he pouted a little. Still not over the fact that I was sitting in the same class with my ex everyday.
“I love you.”,he blurted out and made me smile.
“I love you too.”,I said and was about to lean in for a kiss when suddenly we heared the front door open. We jumped apart and while he sat back down I was left standing against the sink when May walked in.
“Hey you two! How is it going?”,she greeted us and sat down at the table and pulled the food towards her.
“I’m starving.”,she said and reached for a fork without standing up.
“Uh…how was your date?”, I asked finally to break the silence that followed. Peter was sitting in front of his aunt but was not looking at her, let alone talk to her.
“Oh god. It was a disaster. Totally self centered guy. Brought me to a fancy dinner just to order me a salad and sparkly water, how generous. He said 'We want to keep our figures.’. Oh no hun! If I want a burger I’m going to have a burger. If I want thai food I’m going to have the fricking thai food. He kept talking and talking about himself and I exploded at last. I stood up and walked out.”,she said while chewing on her food like Peter did a few moments ago. The paralells between these two made me smile and I was about to say something Peter jumped in.
“So you won’t date him?”, he asked and looked up through his lashes.
“No, Pete. Don’t worry about him.”,she assured him and shot him a small smile which made Peter look up.
“I mean, it would have been okay. You know. You daring some guy. Not that guy in particular he seems to be an ass…”
“Language!”,she interrupted him and he said sorry.
“I want you to be happy, Aunt May. You know that right?”,he said finally and my hesrt melted at the scenario infront of me. I did not say anything and tried to make myself invisible to give them their space.
“Of course! And I am happy. I larb you after all.”,she teased him and Peter rolled his eyes and let himself fall back into his chair.
“We both larb you.”,I added my part and May and I high fived.
“You’re both unbelievable. That’s what you are.”,he sighed and stood up to walk out of the kitchen.
“You larb us too Pete. We know it!”,May yelled after him and we laughed at his following groan.
What are some hurdles a person who has practiced taekwondo, fencing and aikido might have to jump when thrown into a real life or death fight? What will happen when they get much better at escalating quickly (almost too quickly) and they're thrown into a situation where that's the opposite of what they need to do?
By, “the opposite of what they need to do,” you mean, not
escalate the situation, or specifically work to try to limit the harm being
inflicted. You know, like an Aikido practitioner?
I know we’ve said this before, but; martial arts are not interchangeable.
They’re not just alternate move sets, or aesthetic considerations. Every
martial art, every one, brings its
own philosophies and outlooks into play. When those philosophies overlap, you
might have options to start mixing them together, or lifting elements from one
for the other. Aikido and Taekwondo don’t really have much of anything to talk
Aikido is a martial art of pacifism. It works well for self defense
because the entire idea is, you stand at the center, plant your feet, and send
anyone who attacks you to the floor, so they can think about all of the mistakes
they just made.
As I said at the beginning, Aikido doesn’t escalate, at
least not on its own. This is a martial art that focuses on ending conflicts
with as little harm done as humanly possible. People will get hurt, that’s an inevitability,
but, this is a martial art that is heavily focused on avoiding escalation.
If you want to start mixing it with something else, there
are other martial arts that have common ground. Jujitsu and Judo both have some
of the same philosophical underpinnings, they’re just pretty sure that plopping
someone on the ground isn’t enough to get the message across, that sometimes
you’re going to want to get down there and make your point in person.
There are even aggressive martial arts that you can
(probably) mix Aikido with fairly effectively, including Muay Thai or Krav
Maga. Martial arts that say, “I want to get really close to someone and turn
them into goulash.” They do have common ground on the ranges that they think
combat should be taking place at.
Taekwondo doesn’t. It’s a very active martial art. It wants
to go places and kick people in the head. As a practical martial style it
shares almost nothing with Aikido. Where Aikido wants its foes close enough to
reach out and touch, Taekwondo is all about forcing your foes away, and keeping
them off balance while you drive your foot through any internal organs they
Taekwondo exists as a practical martial art, but you’re
going to be hard pressed to find that variant outside of Korea. If your
character served in the South Korean military, worked for the police or as a
bodyguard there, then it’s possible they learned this.
Taekwondo traditionally pairs with Hapkido. I don’t know
much about the martial art itself, beyond that it has a focus on joint locks.
But, these are designed to work together, and against one another, so a
practitioner in one would probably also learn the other.
Ironically, Taekwondo can also find common ground with
martial arts like Muay Thai or Krav Maga. These are all martial arts that enjoy
moving around a lot and messing people up. Where Taekwondo excels at doing this
at range, Muay Thai or Krav Maga offer options to do this up close.
Now, if you’re sitting there and wondering why I just listed
the same two martial arts as compatible to both of the ones you picked, that’s
because they have common ground with one another, the two you picked, really
kind of don’t. It’s not that martial artists never learn conflicting styles.
That does happen. But the benefit you gain from that isn’t being able to blend
them together into a single style, it’s being able to switch up your approach
to fit the situation you’re in. And, yes, escalation control is an element of your martial art.
A character who’s been trained in Aikido and (practical)
Taekwondo, would be in a very good position to work as a bodyguard. Taekwondo
allows for rapid vicious responses when called for, and Aikido allows for them
to deal with attackers in public situations where you really wouldn’t want a
bodyguard tearing apart an overly eager fan.
I’m just going to toss this one out, but fencing really
doesn’t add much to this situation. It will help with physical conditioning,
but then again they’d already be getting that from Taekwondo and Aikido.
So, if your character’s been training in Aikido, either
recreationally or practically, they shouldn’t be having issues with escalation.
Remember, escalation is where you increase the amount of force you use to a
point where combat ceases to be an appealing option for your opponent. The
entire concept is anathema to Aikido, which seeks to end combat with as little
violence as possible.
Also, there’s a side nitpick, it’s not really possible to
escalate too quickly. The issue is escalating too far. Again, the idea is that
you demonstrate a degree of violence your opponent isn’t psychologically ready
to handle, forcing them to back down.
Escalating too slowly can give them time to come to terms
with what you’re doing, but the only problem with escalating too quickly is
that you’ll use excessive force. For example, grabbing someone by the skull and
gouging out their eyes would (almost certainly) convince their friends or
allies to back down, but if the situation doesn’t warrant that kind of force,
it’s excessive, you’ve escalated too far, and there will be consequences. These
can be the obvious legal issues associated with extreme violence, or it can
provoke responses in opponents where, instead of backing down, they’ll be more
willing to retaliate in kind. For example, pulling a gun on someone’s friend
might get them to back down, where killing their friend will drive them to come
after you, where they wouldn’t have with less escalation.
The problems faced by a character who escalates too far is, that
they’ll make far more enemies, which will eventually catch up with them. This
is part of why escalation is such a tricky concept. It’s requires a substantial
amount of finesse to pull off effectively.
Escalation is also something that is seriously frowned on by
most of the recreational martial arts community. Unnecessary, and excessive
violence is a serious liability issue for the school, particularly if their
students are children (and, honestly, that’s pretty common.) A large part of
this is because of the exact problem you’re describing. The actual difficulty
is about going too far. It’s not hard to go way too far in an instant, that
happens all the time. But, unless your character is operating with some kind of
“above-the-law” protections, going too far once is a good way to end up
spending the next 25 years in a small cell.

“Will, remind me why I am here.” You complain, pushing the cart behind him.
“Because you are a girl and I need your good taste.” He says, stopping in front of a pre-made living room.
Will and you have been friends for two years, and oh, doesn’t the word ‘friends’ hurt. You have been in love with William for what it seems like an eternity, but he is too focused on hockey and hockey and hockey and nothing but hockey, to actually think about love.
“Why being a girl means that I have good taste?” You ask, shaking your head at a blanket he is looking.
“Because girls have better taste in general.” He answers, putting it down with a pout. “And I want my house to be nice.”
William has bought a pretty nice maisonette after his three years contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs and he decided that the house would feel more like home, like Sweden home, if he got the furniture for it in IKEA. The house is completely empty aside from the bathrooms and kitchen, that are fully furnitured.
“So instead of paying an interior designer to do the job you thought that I could do it.” You say, pointing at a dark dining room table. “Without even paying me a penny.”
“I’ll buy you a plate of Swedish meatballs when we are done.” He jokes and you are about to slap his shoulder, but he catches your hand before it makes contact.
Will and you walk around the store, grabbing small pieces like lamps, glasses, plates, silverware… and taking pictures of the bigger pieces of furniture so you can find them later on the warehouse part of the store.
“What does ‘sanning’ mean?” You ask him, looking at the tag of one of the plates you have chosen.
“Truth.” He says, smiling at me.
“And ‘variera’?” You ask again, reading another tag.
“Vary.” He translates for you again, grabbing a set of spatulas and looking at them.
You nod, looking at more stuff for his kitchen. You know that he isn’t going to cook that much, but you are trying to get everything that it’s convenient to have. You show him a big bowl that could be used for salads or snacks and he nods, smiling when he sees the name of the container.
“What is it so funny?” You wonder, putting it in the cart.
“ ‘Vargaden’ means everyday life.” He explains and you nod again. Will loves to speak Swedish to you, but just because he knows that you don’t understand a word and it amuses him. “Come on min kära, let’s get all the heavy duty and go home.”
It takes you another half an hour to get all the pieces of furniture and pay. You get the smaller things in Will’s car and arrange the delivery of the couches, tables and beds for tomorrow.
Will drives us to his new home, which is in much better neighborhood than yours. He parks his car in the underground garage and you two make three or four trips up and down the building to carry everything to his house.
“So, where are my meatballs?” You ask, putting the last bag of stuff down and rubbing your sore hands from carrying stuff.
“I want Thai food.” He shrugs, looking at the boxes, trying to decide what to put together first. “What should we put together first? The bedside tables or that bookshelf?”
“We? Uh uh, blondie.” You say, sitting on the floor and taking your shoes off. “I am not putting together anything. I am just here for the food.”
“Well, order some take out if you are just going to sit on your pretty butt all night.” He huffs, choosing the bookshelf’s box and starting to open it and taking all the pieces out.
You order some Thai food for both of you and sit on the floor with your back against the wall. Willy reads the instructions and tries to follow them, but two people are required to put it together.
“(y/n), please.” He begs after spending half an hour trying after giving up. “Help.”
“What are you going to give me in return?” You wonder, smirking at him.
“Vad du vill (whatever you want), (y/n)” He says in Swedish and you raise an eyebrow. “Just help me.”
“I want you to stop speaking to me in a language I don’t understand.” You complain, getting on your feet and walking towards him, helping him with the bookshelf.
By the time you finish working on the piece of furniture the food has gone cold and you two are sweaty and tired.
“Beer?” He asks, grabbing a couple bottles from the fridge and handing you one of them.
“Tack (Thank you).” You answer him and he smiles at you, loving your accent.
“I need to teach you more Swedish, it sounds good in your mouth.” He says, making you blush furiously.
“Then teach me.” You agree and he smirks, raising his beer.
“Öl.” He says, pointing at the bottle on his hand.
“Öl is beer?” You wonder and he nods. “Okay, next.”
“Hallå.” He says and you repeat, making him laugh. “That’s ‘hello’.”
“Next.” You request.
“Snygg.” You mimic his pronunciation, but he doesn’t translate it for you.
“What’s that?” You say and he shrugs.
“Take a wild guess?” He challenges you and you chew on your lower lip.
“Put it on a sentence for me?” You ask and he nods, thinking about it for a second.
“You are snygg.” He says and you frown, thinking about every mean thing that snygg could be.
“Dumb?” You ask and he rolls his eyes, shaking his head. “Short? Strong-headed?”
“Beautiful, (y/n). You are beautiful.” He says and you blush again. “Another?” He asks and you nod, looking down so he cannot see how red your face is. “Jar älskar dig.”
“That’s a long one.” You protest and he gives you an encouraging look. “Jar älska di?”
“Jar älskar dig.” And you repeat it, not getting it quite right but close enough.
“What does it mean?” You whisper.
William doesn’t speak at first, looking straight at your eyes and you feel like you are getting lost in those blue eyes. Will leans in, his lips just an inch away from yours.
“I love you.” He whispers back and you feel your heart flutter.
“It is what it means or what you mean?” Your voice is so quiet that you are not sure if he has heard you or not.
“Both.” He says, his lips crashing with yours.
“I hope that your new bed is more comfortable than this.” You whisper, rubbing circles on the skin of his chest.
You are laying on a blow out mattress, both of you wrapped around each other. Will is playing with strands of your hair, twisting and wrapping them around his fingers.
“It’s a good thing that you love all the furniture I’ve got.” He chuckles, massaging your scalp softly.
“Yeah well, you have good taste.” You mock him and he laughs.
“I definitely do.” He says, putting his finger under your chin and making you look at him, leaning in for a soft kiss.
