Whos your favorite Blues artist of all time?

That is a very difficult question, that I will attempt to answer in several parts. There is no way I can pick just one, because the blues is such a wide umbrella that encompasses so many different forms, through a dozen or so decades of development and evolution. How do I compare Delta Blues to the more sophisticated Jazz Blues? So as a cop out I am going to break this into sub-genres to answer your question.

My favorite female vocalist for Classic Jazz/Blues is Billie Holiday and for the men: Louis Armstrong.

For early Delta Blues, I love Robert Johnson, great storyteller, Skip James comes in a close second.

For Piedmont Blues I’d have to go with Reverend Gary Davis.

For Postwar Chicago Blues it is an eternal wrestling match between Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, but really Willie Dixon wrote all their best songs, and I also love Buddy Guy, who is still going strong in his 70’s.

B.B. King is the King and greatest ambassador of the blues… the man is Buddha with an electric guitar.

Soul: Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin.

R&B:  Ray Charles.

Texas Guitar Blues: Stevie Ray Vaughan & Freddie King

Jump Blues: Louis Jordan

Classic New Orleans Piano Blues: Fats Domino

Contemporary New Orleans Piano Blues: Dr. John

Classic Chicago Piano: Otis Spann

St. Louis Piano: Roosevelt Sykes

Memphis Piano: Memphis Slim

West Coast Piano: Charles Brown

Harmonica Blues: Little Walter

Memphis Blues: Albert King

Slide Guitar Blues: Elmore James

60’s Rock/BluesJimi Hendrix.

Contemporary female blues vocalists I am torn in several directions: Shemekia CopelandValerie JuneRuthie FosterJaniva Magness, and Marcia Ball are five favorites.

Contemporary Blues out of Canada: Paul Reddick

Contemporary Bay Area Blues: Tommy Castro

Contemporary Acoustic Blues: Eric Bibb & Corey Harris

Contemporary Blues Harmonica: Charlie Musselwhite and Mark Hummel

Did that muddy the waters enough for you?

Top Ten Blues Favorites (in no order): Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, Willie Dixon, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and Robert Johnson.

Thanks for the question, my brain hurts!
