Disney continues their winning streak of revamping their
popular animated films with real people. Director Bill Condon reunites our love
for the small-town girl who dreams of much more than what life is giving her.
Just in case you have been cursed, living in a castle cut
off from the rest of the world, Beauty and the Beast is based on an
eighteenth-century fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. Disney’s
original adaption in 1991 was an animated film, whose success escalated to
being the first animation ever to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best
In Beauty & the Beast, we follow Belle, portrayed by
Emma Watson in the 2017 remake, as she dreams of love and adventure that she
reads about in her books. Belle is taken on an emotional journey from her small
town of Villeneuve where she doesn’t fit in with the rest of the community to
another isolated community that she quickly calls home. When her father does
not return from the market Belle goes to look for him, finding him imprisoned
by a beast in an enchanted castle. Belle takes her father’s place in the cell.
Stockholm syndrome soon sets in and Belle and the Beast form a growing
friendship, one that can potentially break the curse on the castle and its
There is the obvious theme of ‘inner beauty’ that Belle must
find in the Beast but I think it is equally important to note Belle’s inner
beauty. Gaston and the other townsfolk only ever look skin deep, and we all
know that Belle’s looks have got no parallel, but they miss out on knowing her
mind and spirit, the gift she is to them and are content to be ignorant of the
help she could provide the community. The Beast shows her more kindness than
any of her neighbours ever did, which is why she starts to feel for him. He was
the first ‘person’ to show her respect and see her for who she truly is, other
than her father of course, which is a very attractive quality regardless of how
hairy or horny they are.
Let’s not forget this is a musical and for the most part it
enhances the film greatly. The cast give their all in making the adapted songs
theirs. Watson’s version of the song Belle is uplifting and sets her character
up beautifully. Gaston is jaunty fun like the original version except they fail
to mention his hairy bod or the cleft in his chin. Unfortunately, Be Our Guest
lacks some lustre and falls flat even with the spectacle that accompanies it.
There are also some new songs performed in film. Most notably is the terrible
power ballad sung by the Beast after he releases Belle. The song written by composer
Alan Menken and lyricist Tim Rice was originally for the cancelled Broadway adaptation
of the story. It does not fit with the rest of the film and feels out of
character for the Beast.
Emma Watson is perfect casting for Belle. She embodies the
dreamer that we loved from the animation. She is soft and kind but also strong
and fearless. Belle is what ties you into the story and if Watson failed to hit
that nostalgic point the movie would have been a hollow remake of a childhood
favourite. She uses that as a baseline and improves on the character’s strength
and vulnerability that helps you understand Belle and the story further than
the animated does.
Dan Stevens brings the Beast from hand drawn animation to
computer generated animation. Neither Stevens nor this film, adds anything
extra to the character we know besides an attempt to justify his a-hole
personality that leads to his cursing. Similar to Disney’s reinvention of
Maleficent’s misunderstood villainous character, we learn that the Prince had a
terrible childhood and an abusive father. Thankfully, this was only one line in
the entire film and was not turned into a subplot but it’s still an unnecessary
The supporting cast is engaging, fun and a delight to watch.
Ewan McGregor and Ian McKellen banter and bicker like a married couple as Lumière
and Cogsworth. Kevin Kline is warm and protective as Belle’s father, crazy old Maurice.
Nathan Fillion would have been my dream casting for Gaston if he wasn’t too old
to play the character and initially I was imagining Fillion chasing Belle in
the early scenes but Luke Evans won me over in watching his incredibly
ostentatious Gaston in person.
There are some nit-picky negatives with the film. Belle
shows her pantaloons too much. I do not need to know that Emma Watson is
wearing historically accurate underwear. Untuck your dress from your underpants
and leave some things to the imagination. The CGI was not quite up to the
standard that Disney showed us in the Jungle Book. The household appliances
were fine, but the graphics for the Beast did not seem up to par, specifically
the full body shots of the Beast, especially when dancing with Belle. It felt
stilted and dated. And finally, I think it ran too long. I enjoyed the new
content that has been added but by the time the Beast’s solo number came around
it felt like it was dragging out.
Beauty and the Beast is a celebration of individuality that
has a great energy to the story and the songs. It is a great rendition of the animated
story to be nostalgic but adding enough original work to keep it interesting. It
is fun and engaging with keeping its heart and further accentuating the themes
of the story. ★★★★
