You violently rubbed your hands with water to remove Lucille’s blood that had dried up on your skin. The color of water in the sink became red as it mixed with the blood but after a brief moment it disappeared , though you presisted on rubbing over and over as if the stains were still there. Suddenly you stopped washing your hands as you watched them trembling, unable to control them anymore ,so you opted to clench them instead.

Last night in Manchester we saw the worst and best of humanity.
The terrorist attack in Manchester, reportedly carried out by a suicide bomber, was shocking and horrific, one that deliberately targeted the young and vulnerable enjoying an evening at a music concert. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those 22 people, including many children, and those dozens who were injured. Their lives have been changed forever and our hearts are broken.
The response of the police and Manchester community also showed us the best of humanity: those individuals who stopped to help; who opened their homes, hotels and shops to provide safe spaces for those fleeing the terror; who offered lifts in their cars to take frightened children and parents home.
Terrorists seek to strike fear into our world and divide us. But they underestimate our strength, as local communities, as nations and as a global society. They will fail, and despite the intense grief we feel this morning for the people of Manchester, we will survive and thrive.

anonymous asked:

Who's Hagar? And why don't you like her?

Hhhhhhh okay this is not going to be in any way comprehensive nor well written or organized, but Haggar is a fictional character from Voltron: Legendary Defender (VLD) her character is lowkey Islamophobic and seeing her makes me very uncomfortable

[Caption: image of Haggar, a woman hunched over with blue skin, dull purple hood and robes and long white hair]

The reason why is because of Hagar (pronounced like Haajar in Arabic) who is a well known figure in the Abrahamic faiths. In the Islamic tradition, she is revered as a matriarch of our religion because it was through her son Ismail (pbuh) that the prophet Muhammed (pbuh) was born. When we perform Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, we remember her by running seven times between Al-Safwa and Al-Marwah hills just as she did when she looked for water for her baby. It’s also believed that she’s buried with her son Ismail (pbuh) beside the Kaaba, which is the most sacred site in Islam and is considered to be the house of God. Suffice to say, she is really important to us.

Haggar of VLD serves the Galra Empire, the main antagonistic group who is at war with the protagonists and who terrorizes the rest of the galaxy. She is sort of like a witch figure and is the right hand man of emperor Zarkon, and her main function in the army is to create monsters to fight and destroy Voltron, AKA the Good Guys (and anyone else who stands in their path).

When I first started watching the show my brain immediately connected Haggar and Haajar because my family is Egyptian. Egyptians pronounce the soft J sound like a hard G and growing up I always heard Haajar’s name pronounced like they pronounce Haggar in Voltron. Her character made me increasingly more uncomfortable throughout the show because of how Muslims are viewed in the Western world. We are seen as an outside threat, as terrorists who can strike at any moment and there is a lot of fear revolving around Muslims. The way Haggar of VLD is portrayed mirrors Haajar in a Western context. Haggar is a witch who creates terrorist monsters who strike at any moment and Haajar is a a matriarchal figure of Islam, a religion whose followers are seen as terrorists.

Aside from this, the Galran druids who serve under Haggar appear loosely similar to Muslim women who choose to cover their bodies. They wear flowing robes and hoods that hide their heads.

[Caption: image of a druid, a dark purple hood covers it’s head and a white mask conceals it’s face, which is in shadows]

The similarities I’ve outlined are admittedly sparse (there’s more but I’m tired and I don’t like talking about her) and I’m probably the only Muslim who sees it that way, but nonetheless her character makes me very, very uncomfortable. Every time I see her it reminds me of how we’re seen in the Western world, my insides twists and my paranoia spikes. It’s not fun. It’s why I ask people to tag her and for people who have her in her icon not to follow me.

Anyways thank you for reading, I apologize if this is a mess it’s 3 am and I’m having an anxiety attack.
