I’m well aware that Doctor Who is just a TV show and it means pretty much nothing, but my 7-year old sister would beg to differ. She hates her freckles. She hates them so much. She won’t let me take pictures of her because she has freckles littering her nose, cheekbones, and forehead. Today, after we had a conversation about Doctor Who and Ten, I lead into confronting her about it because it broke my heart. She told me she thought they were gross and she just wanted pictures of her whole body, that she didn’t like her face.
I couldn’t think of how to help. I don’t have freckles, I can’t relate. I can’t help.
But the Tenth Doctor could.
So I whipped out my phone and showed her pictures of David Tennant and his freckle-spotted face. And, man, you should’ve seen her light up.
Her fictional hero had freckles just like her, and that made her feel so much better.
Yeah, Doctor Who is fictional and he’s not some alien she can look up to for confidence, but it helps. It made her smile and tell me she was okay with her “fish food face” and that makes it pretty freaking important to me.
