temporarily intervention

Any word on when the hiatus will end?

Your guess is as good as mine, anon. But tbh I’m not very hopeful :(

Adachitoka went on hiatus for an unexpected illness, but there’s no word as to what kind of illness or whether or not it’s affecting both mangaka or just one (I’m guessing it’s just one of the two writers that’s sick). We know the hiatus started probably around March, after chapter 74 was released, so it’s been about three months now.

Purely speculating, unexpected illnesses could fall into two broad categories: a surgical or a medical reason. Surgical reasons could further break down into (1) unexpected trauma, e.g. car accident, fall from a building, etc, or (2) a condition that warrants surgery as its treatment, for example an emergent appendectomy for appendicitis, vascular surgery for an abdominal aortic aneurysm, etc. If it’s something as simple as an appendectomy or gallbladder surgery or the like, the recovery time is around 6-8 weeks; anything more complicated, like trauma surgery after a car accident, would be longer, since there would be physical therapy etc. involved.

Medical reasons could also vary: if you had a heart attack that required only a trip to the cath lab for stents, again recovery time is probably around 6-8 weeks, whereas if you had open heart surgery, it may be longer. Similarly, a stroke would be worse than a heart attack because you’re looking at a loss of function, /especially/ if the stroke affects their dominant hand. Infections can also either be prolonged or simple - a simple pneumonia would only be about a 3-4 day hospital stay versus having bacteremia/sepsis in the ICU, where some patients may be hospitalized for weeks at a time.

The worst, IMO, would be a new diagnosis of cancer. Not only do you have to deal with the emotional upheaval of the diagnosis, you have a chronic illness that needs a lot of intensive medical therapy, which would wipe you out physically and make it very difficult to work. This is what happened to Tadashi Kawashimi, the mangaka Adachitoka illustrated for before they started working on Noragami, after he developed and later died of liver cancer.

So yeah. Basically, if Adachitoka had a relatively OK diagnosis, a simple surgery or medical intervention that temporarily put them out of commission, they’d probably be back to work after the 6-8 week window, meaning there would be a June release; if they have something more serious, like severe trauma, a new cancer diagnosis, or stroke, then the next chapter probably won’t come up. So basically this month to me will be the most telling as to how long the hiatus will go on: if there’s still no chapter by June, there probably won’t be another chapter for a few more months. Worst case scenario, the manga will go on hiatus indefinitely until Adachitoka recovers or another writer/artist takes over.

I hope I’m wrong. I hope the reason why they’re out is that one of them is pregnant and in need of bed rest or something, or that maybe one of them broke their arm and it’s their drawing hand, so they can’t work on the manuscript. In any case, I wish nothing but the best for them and hope they get well soon.
