Once upon a time there was a fucking queen. She had it all: the glory, the power. Worshippers eager to give and grateful to receive. Why? Because she had the gift of the gift. The blessing of blessings, hers to bestow. And her place of worship? Oh, that was the place to be.

LOOK one time i met dan avidan and the space around him was just…. soft, his aura was soft and chill and there was no stress and he made sleepy jokes at me and sleepy smiled at my phone for a picture and i am just so grateful

and then the next day i walked past him on the street and his soft aura of chill no-stress love and peace was 100% STILL THERE. IT’S REAL. like i s2g i SENSED dan walk by me more than i even recognized him because there was like, peace in my heart after we crossed paths

The Octavia E. Butler exhibition is now on view!!

“Octavia E. Butler: Telling My Stories” runs through Aug. 7, 2017, in the West Hall of the Library and puts on view approximately 100 items—letters, photographs, handwritten affirmations, and first editions of her books, and more—from the Butler literary archive, which came to The Huntington in 2008.

i want to make a list of movies/books/etc where a major plot point is “mom helps daughter kill a man who hurt her, or at the very least helps her hide the body” but in general that is never what the actual plot is about, so it’s huge spoilers, which is ACTUALLY KINDA WEIRD now that i am thinking about it. with dad movies it’s the whole plot of the things, SOMEONE HURT HIS DAUGHTER AND NOW THEY’RE GONNA PAY

but i read a book once that was entirely about a girl going back to her hometown after twenty years and trying to reconcile with her mother after The Incident. then they finally reveal 80% of the way through the book that The Incident was that protag thought she’d killed her date rapist and had been scared to come back because she’d somehow made it twenty years without consequences, but actually she’d only seriously injured her date rapist. protag’s mom had found the guy while looking for her wayward daughter, realized what happened, and ran him over with her truck and buried the body under her garden. she never said anything because of Mom Code.

there was no indication at any point prior to this that this was a book about a murder. it was a heartwarming coming-of-age story about a woman entering her middle years learning to better understand her mother. that just happened to include covering up a murder. protag thought her mom was just an obsessive gardener.

All of a sudden, out of the middle of the trees in front of us, a thin, high, trembling voice struck up the well-known air and words: “Fifteen men on the Dead Man’s Chest Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!” I never have seen men more dreadfully affected than the pirates. The color went from their six faces like enchantment; some leaped to their feet, some clawed hold of others, Morgan groveled on the ground. “It’s Flint, by –!”

the one thing i love about in the heights, probably my favorite thing aside from the love letter to carribean culture (and latino culture in general but my family is from pr so that’s what i notice), is how it deals with women. it’s one of the few broadway shows i’ve been exposed to where women allowed to have both love interests and stories outside of them. yes, vanessa and usnavi’s relationship is a huge part of the show but is her big “i want” song about how much she loves him? no, it’s about her desires to leave for bigger and better things. the show doesn’t end with usnavi and vanessa getting together, though it’s implied. it’s not even what ultimately keeps usnavi in nyc, nor does it keep vanessa from achieving her dream.

and nina rosario. how do i even begin with nina rosario? she’s allowed to infinitely complex and even though she and benny have a bunch of really cute duets, all her solo songs have nothing to do with that. instead, she gets her own plot line that drives a significant part of the show and she’s got emotions, that while tied into her relationship in part, exist on their own as well.

there’s a bunch of other really great female characters as well but these two get me every time.
