If you have read/reblog my post “Band names are just made up!”, you would be happy that someone said it. But that’s in a bandom.
I noticed that some people are criticizing me for being overactive. I never wanted to be or meant to be. I wanted to express my knowledge of how bands chose their names. I guess I did got carried away.
I’m sorry if some of you thought i was an “edgy Joe”. I didn’t meant to sound like one.
Anyway, here’s some other band name origins:
-Butthole Surfers changed their name at every gig when they first form. At one performance, the announcer forgot their name and decided one of their songs ‘Butthole Surfers". The band kept their name after hitting fame.
-Blink-184 was originally simply “Blink” but added the numbers when they were informed that an Irish electronica artist was using it.
-Bring Me The Horizon is a line of Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
-Breaking Benjamin is a funny one: during a live performance, frontman Benjamin Burnley knocked over the microphone by accident, making it break. Its owner came up and said “I’d like to thank Benjamin for breaking my f*cking microphone.”
-Black Sabbath is the name of the 1963 horror film.
-The Decemberists refers to the 1825 Decembrist revolt in Imperial Russia, which Colin Meloy views as an attempted communist revolution.
-Joel Thomas Zimmerman came up with deadmau5 after a computer incident. While chatting with a friend on his computer, it shut down suddenly, leaving a faint burn of a wire and a strange odor. After dismantling it, he found a dead mouse. Now you know where the mouse face came from.
-When Traci Guns met Axl Rose, they combined their bands, L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose, together into Guns N’ Roses.
-Queen used to be called Smile. Freddie Mercury renamed the band saying that he found the new name universal and open to lots of interpretations.
-Rush was suggested by John Rutsey’s brother when the band were in a literal rush to name themselves before a gig.
-System of a Down is derived from a poem 'Victims of a Down" by guitarist Daron Malakian.
-Tears For Fears is a line from Prisoners of Pain.
-Thirty Seconds To Mars is a sub-section of a thesis by an ex-Harvard professor. It explains how we are so technologically advanced that we are literally 30 seconds from Mars.
