So I just bought all your music from Bandcamp because I've been a fan since you were releasing Homestuck music and it was long overdue, and I was curious about Songs from the Dustbowl. I love the music, but were the songs inspired by a work of fiction like the Homestuck albums, or are they "original" tracks, for lack of a better term? Also I'm in LOVE with the new song. You really nailed it, it's so very Taako and I love the melancholic feel it has.

Gosh thanks so much!!! :D My chronically empty bank account appreciates it lol

Songs from the Dustbowl is actually inspired by Team Fortress 2! Which I was REALLY into back in 2010-2011 (the pre-homestuck days lol…ancient history)

There’s basically at least 1 song for every mercenary on it. (except soldier because I forgot to put his on it, but u can find that one on my soundcloud)

But yeah.. There you go! :) Thanks again!! <3

please consider

- fluorite and garnet having deep conversations about love and fusion, becoming extremely close friends

- garnet keeping rhodonite and topaz calm and assuring them that their love is valid and there’s nothing wrong with it

- garnet becoming extremely protective of padparadscha, always keeping her close by and aiding her with her future vision

- amethyst and the rutile twins bonding over being “wrong” and amethyst showing them around beach city

- amethyst convincing the topazes to fuse so they can be wrestling partners and tear up the circuit

- pearl and fluorite doting over steven together, being an amazing mom-grandma team

- pearl being inspired by rhodonite, giving her faith that a pearl can be in a loving, lasting relationship and find happiness

- fluorite becoming surrogate grandma to p much everyone

- aquamarine getting punted into space, never to return

Ok but like…Maddie finds out her son is Phantom through whatever means.

And like, of course, she’s freaking out because who wouldn’t when your son is DEAD and maybe she tries to rationalize it? Like “Phantom was using a trick” or whatever but after way too many signs she has to accept it.

And she keeps it from Jack. Hell, she keeps it from her kids too. One, because she’s still trying to grasp that her kid is a ghost and two, it’s not her secret to tell.

And maybe she starts out acting like Jazz did. Helping out from the sidelines, “missing” her shots so it hits the ghost Phantom is fighting, suddenly retreating when they’re alone, “conveniently” leaving out inventions that would help him fight, etc.

But I’m sure she slips up because how can she not? She’s a mother, and when she sees the Wisconsin ghost beating her son to the ground how can she not interfere?

Oh and the hell that was brought down on the Wisconsin ghost that day and the fear in Danny’s eyes when he realizes his mom knows.

But then…she hugs him. (Is she crying?) And she was so scared for him. She thought she lost her baby. And now Danny is crying because he thought he was going to get a gun to his head but instead his mom is hugging him because somehow she found out.

From that day on she’s a part of Team Phantom but not with a field work role (no matter how much she wants to be but how would she hide that from Jack?) Nope she’s making weapons and watching Danny to test his powers and their strengths and handing excuses to the school when he suddenly has to leave.

But there’s no way in hell Danny and his friends are doing this alone.

There’s no way his mother would let him.

I have a huge group of mercenaries that I'm building up to write about for a Team Fortress inspired writing, but I'm super conserned on how to make my "sneaky and shifty" spy character of the team. What races/ethnicities would you guys reccomend I avoid putting into this role to avoid the worst negative stereotyping?

Avoiding Stereotypes by Avoiding Tokenism

If you only have one of any particular ethnicity on a team, none of them will avoid negative repercussions.

We’ve spoken about tokenism before, and this is a prime example of why you should avoid it. Having only one member of any ethnicity on a team means all of their traits are representative of their ethnicity, so you’ll be enforcing the worst of the behaviour.

On the flipside, avoiding having the Token PoC be any sort of “meaty” role in fear of avoiding stereotypes denies them their humanity. Part of good representation is letting us be the messy people we are— which includes sometimes doing stuff that fits stereotypes, even if they’re negative. The problem isn’t the “they have negative traits.” The problem is “there’s only one of them of that ethnicity.“

By having 2+ of any one ethnicity, you give people the room to be themselves because there’s another member of the team not like that. It breaks down the unconscious associations between the character’s ethnicity and the negative traits, by removing “of course [character]’s behaving like that, they’re [ethnicity]!” with “but [other character] doesn’t do that, and they’re [ethnicity], too.”

(You will always get people insisting the one who doesn’t behave in the morally reprehensible way is just “one of the good ones”, but this helps cut them down— also why it’s important to have a diverse background cast with similar variety in personality types, jobs, and moral alignments)

Fear and Representation
I’m going to talk about a deeper issue I see here, which is fear of messing up. You don’t want to hurt people by doing it wrong, don’t want to be yelled at for reinforcing negative things.

This fear hurts you more than it helps you.

We get a lot of “how do I avoid stereotypes” questions. We get a lot of “how do I not hurt people” questions. We don’t answer the majority of them because if you write from a place of fear, you will not represent PoC well.

Writing good representation is not handling a bomb that’s about to explode if you press it wrong. Writing good representation is about a curiosity, love, and respect for people not like yourself. You’re curious about their stories and are invested in telling them. You love them as people, as their genuine reality. And you respect them enough to want to do them justice in your writing.

If you approach writing diversity with fear, you will not let us be human. Because by fearing writing us, you end up creating model minorities because you just can’t let them be evil, that’s bad. You other us even further by not letting us have the same internal lives and same shades of experience as white people.

People mess up. People have complex morality. Not letting us mess up or have other moral alignments than goodie two shoes strips us of our personhood.
Put all types of us into your stories. Some things you Don’t Do— like Jewish blood mages and Natives who are so much simpler but so much happier because of it— but if you approach us like people with different backgrounds, you’re at least on the right track. And if you make it that multiple people of the same ethnicity exist, then you don’t have to worry about one character being the be all end all of representation.

The thing about these types of questions— “what stereotypes do I avoid"— is you’re not really asking What Do I Not Do. You’re asking "can you tell me what to do so I don’t get yelled at for it”, as if there are magic lists of 100% Safe Traits for different ethnicities.

Safe Traits are not people. Until you ease down your fear of being Safe, of Not Reinforcing Bad Things With One Character, you will not be able to truly tackle representation in your work. The work you have to do is much deeper than putting in “acceptable representation.”

You have to redefine “acceptable representation” in your mind. It cannot mean “a character who is safe to write without hurting anybody.” What it can mean, however, is “showing the diversity of humanity by displaying multiple people having worthwhile, nuanced, dynamic, and messy stories to tell that reflect their lived reality.”

I’d especially stay away from making this character Jewish since that’s already a stereotype for us, and East Asian since there’s a negative trope about East Asians being “inscrutable” (i.e. “you can’t tell what they’re thinking so they could totes be plotting bad stuff!”)

Standard disclaimer that if you have a cast of many many Jewish characters or many many East Asian characters you can make one of them sneaky because the rest of them will show that it’s not an inherently Jewish (or East Asian) trait, but it sounded like you wanted a variety of ethnicities for this project so probably best just to stay away from making the Spy either of those two groups.

Matt/Lance fic

https://ovyy-pvcure.tumblr.com/post/160073527290/okay-so-i-know-matt-coming-into-the-team-and

I got inspired by this post so I wrote a latte fic.

Matt was still adjusting to the castle. The rebels had been somewhat of an" every person lives in a small ship" group. The immense size of the castle kept throwing him off, but not enough for him not to notice the Blue Paladin. Matt had been a little starstruck when he had gotten a good look at Lance. That boy was an excellent specimen of the human race.  Clear bronze skin, dark blue eyes that shone, tall, and the body of a swimmer with broad shoulders. At first, it had been a purely physical attraction; over time Matt had noticed Lance’s personality. With a joke or pick-up line, he could easily break the tension. Lance was also loyal to a fault, which drove the Galra crazy. Lance was sort of like a puppy in Matt’s mind.  Then came the pining; eventually, it had worked out into a relationship when Lance revealed he wanted to be more than friends, which Matt kept under wraps while working with everyone.
Speaking of that, working with the Paladins was very hard. Allura was a hard head and continuously pushed them all to their limits. Shiro would never talk to anyone about the battle plans, that was a sore point between Matt, Lance, and Shiro. Keith ran headlong into the fray or was in the training deck all the time, often he ended up in the pods. Matt had caught Hunk more than once in someone’s quarters going through things. Katie or Pidge had turned into a computer addicted gremlin. Matt had noticed her asleep in random areas of the castle. Coran more than once had said, “That is not how a paladin…” Honestly, if Lance had not been there, Matt would’ve left a long time ago. Even though Matt loved Katie and was friends with Shiro, they were getting on his nerves.
Today had been no different. Shiro had proposed a plan to sneak onto one of the prisoner ships when Lance had pointed out that there was a fault. Shiro had snapped, and Lance backed off. Matt felt somewhat bad, and he walked over.
“Shiro, I agree with Lance. We need someone better at stealth other than Keith to get past the personal guards.”
Shiro did not take it well which was apparent when he answered, “We have no one else, and Keith is great at stealth.” He walked away, Lance looked heartbroken at being brushed off again, which of course Matt would not take.
“Shiro!”
Shiro was met with the full force of Matt’s anger, which he apparently is surprised by.
“I know Keith is your brother, but that does not mean you can show him any special treatment!”
Shiro was floored that someone was calling him out. As was everyone else.
Matt kept going, his pent up frustration was coming lose in a stream of words.
“I have been on this ship for two months, and I would have left a long time ago if not for Lance! All of you are so bullheaded and stubborn and can’t figure out when not to push someone! Lance, he’s been trying his damned hardest as have all of you, but none of you are handling it well! Shiro, you don’t talk at all. Coran, you talk too much and can’t figure out these are not the paladins of old. Allura needs not push people so hard we are only kids. Katie keeps snapping and is always on the computer. Hunk needs to learn to give people some privacy. Keith, you can’t rush in all the time or train till you fall over. Lance, you’re too damn loyal and need to actually express your feelings not just put up a facade.”
The team stood stock still each a little bit upset but knowing every word of it was true.
“Hold up, what do you mean Lance putting up a facade,” queried Keith.
Matt let out a strangled laugh,“Are you really so blind?”
The silence was the only answer needed.
Matt seemed to take it as an insult, “You mean to tell me you never once noticed his self-hatred at all!?”
Metaphorical crickets chirped in the background.
“That’s it,” he marched over to Lance and shouted over his shoulder as they left,“ I want explanations tomorrow and so help me God if they are not satisfactory there will be hell to pay got it!?”
Matt dragged Lance to his room and waited outside while Lance changed into his pajamas. Matt quietly pulled Lance into a hug as the taller boy finally broke. Quietly, they lay together as Matt whispered all the things he loved about Lance. It would not be easy, and the insecurities would never be truly gone, but as long as Matt was there, he would do his best to drown them out with positives.
