“We didn’t have a plan going into the recording session,” Auerbach says. “We had a blank slate and started making it up. We don’t really do demos. We like to see it unfold rather than forcing it.”

He says Danger Mouse’s place in the studio is as an equal partner. “He was there during the creation,” he says, “not during the lyrics, but while we were doing the instrumental arrangements. We all have an equal say when we’re in there. We throw ideas out and see what sticks. I respect Brian’s opinion about music and art in general and he respects our opinion.”
