taper and fade

[This is literally self-indulgent crack.]

I imagine Adam going off to college and being exposed to new tv shows, movies, music, culture; just everything.

He dislikes the pop music that some of his friends listen to, but he’s really come to love the 90s era rock that his roommate blasts when he’s in the shower.

Homework keeps him from binge-watching films and shows like everyone suggests, but after a lot of complaining and guilt tripping, Adam finally takes the time to watch Game of Thrones. He texts Ronan at 4am one morning, to tell him to get caught up so they can watch it together when he comes to visit. He gets a middle finger emoji in response.

His clothing changes too. His loose jeans and oversized t-shirts are fitted now. He even wears pink on Wednesdays, though he hasn’t seen the movie the campus tradition comes from.

A classmate of his is a hair stylist on the weekends and gives him a modern trim she says his boyfriend will love. She says something about a taper fade, but Adam doesn’t know what that means, so he trusts her to do what she thinks looks good. It can’t be any worse than the mess he already has and he’s right; it looks great. He sends a photo to Ronan and almost instantly there’s an incoming text that has heat rushing to Adam’s cheeks.

College changes a lot of things about Adam.

But when he goes back to the Barns, goes back to Ronan and Opal, none of that matters. Ronan still kisses him stupid any chance he gets, they still go on late-night drives in the BMW, they still talk about Gansey and Blue and Henry and Noah, and they still spend a lot of time doing absolutely nothing in each other’s company.

Ronan embraces Adam’s changes, loves them with the ease that always came with loving Adam Parrish.

“Ronan,” Adam starts. He’s laying on the couch in nothing but a pair of sleeping pants, head on his boyfriend’s lap. “Did you get caught up on Game of Thrones?”

Ronan puts down his magazine.

“I’m going to be honest with you,” he sighs. “I did. I’m actually a season ahead.”

Adam sits up abruptly, looking offended.

“You fucking asshole.”

Playing for the Stars, the Wind, and the Cowboy

Even when Jesse Jebediah Abayomi Ramón McCree wanders the halls at ass-o’clock in the morning, his footsteps are just as silent as the most diligent of stealth missions. His feet aren’t booted, though, which makes it even easier.

Nope, he’s wearing fuzzy socks, striped in blue and cream. They clash terribly with his red flannel pajama bottoms, and the white tanktop he threw on before leaving his bunk is hardly more than a dingy, rumpled afterthought.

The barest ghost of his breaths is all he hears, besides the occasional snore from Reindhart down one of the corridors he just passed through. The walls are supposedly soundproof, but nothing could keep Reindhart’s snores from echoing. Theres the subtlest whirrings, too, something Jesse’s picked up from years of being on base. Cameras. Athena. Lights. Various appliances. He’s used to the sounds, but they do vary as he approaches and passes particular things.

Something new breaks the silence.

A long, steady note, as clear as day, rings out from an indeterminate location. It tapers, almost fading, taking on a mournful edge as the pitch dips and sways. It’s so soft that Jesse has a moment where he’s convinced he’s just hearing things, but then another note, so delicate that Jesse thinks it could break if a gust of wind brushed it, follows just behind the first.

Slowly, a tragic melody takes shape, clearly skilled and perfect in both the clarity and presentation. At an intersection, Jesse turns, finds a stairwell, and heads upwards to the roof. As he goes, the volume increases, and he soon reaches the roof, where the door swings silently to reveal the small greenhouse Watchpoint sports. It’s tended to by Zenyatta, Genji, and Bastion, as well as whomever else takes a fancy to it. But just outside of it, Jesse finds as he heads to the door, is Hanzo Shimada.

Jesse steps out of the greenhouse and stops in his tracks, eyes wide and jaw thoroughly dropped.

Hanzo stands, flooded in moonlight, his profile cutting a striking outline compared to the vast ocean past him, and the smattering of stars above him. Tucked under his jaw is a violin, which he plays with eyes closed, hesitating not even once, the baleful melody ethereal and moving enough that Jesse feels tears welling, unbidden, in the corners of his eyes.

A breeze floats by, ruffling some papers on a stand a few paces away. A pen rests in front of them, and only a few lines of the currently visible page have been penned in.

The wind picks up a bit, tossing Hanzo’s hair, which flutters freely around his shoulders. Ever so subtly, Hanzo’s brow tightens, and then suddenly the music stops. As though unaware of his visitor, he scribbles down a few notes on the paper. Hanzo glances over in Jesse’s direction, finally, and there is recognition and a small bit of pride in his expression.

With that, Hanzo’s eyes fall closed again, and he starts the song up once more, smiling faintly now, as he plays for the stars, the wind, and the cowboy.

note from the taper:

This IS the “We Gonna Get You” master tape!  As Joe Ray recalls it; “After Neil’s comment to get me (‘the guy with the microphone’), I held the microphone where it could not be seen until ‘The Loner’ (uncomplete), when I turned the deck off. I was sitting in the 5th row center and the roadies were looking for me from the side of the stage.   The pressure was on me,…if I would have been caught I would have been arrested, etc.,… so, I just stopped taping. I put the expensive AKG D-1000-E microphone in my boot.
I lost the $40.00 Sony Portable Cassette Deck and the Microphone Cord by saved the microphone and the tape.  I became much more stealthy when recording shows after this incident!”

Preference: Hair Change

Matt: Matt had stuck with the same hairstyle since he had gone blind. It was simple and easy to remember, especially after a night of too much drinking, or when his brain went numb from studying for his finals. That’s why Matt had no idea how he ended up in this salon chair. It was Elektra’s fault really. She’s the one who kept telling him that he would look good with a taper fade haircut. When you are blind you should really bring a friend with you to make sure the haircut isn’t horrible, Foggy said he looked like a confused lesbian.

Foggy: Matt was not the only one who decided to change things up a bit in college, although lucky for him Matt didn’t take photographic evidence of this fuck up like foggy had for him.  In their freshman year Foggy had decided he wanted to be punk rock (no, Matt it had nothing to do with impressing the girl in his Mandarin class). To achieve this punk rock look, Foggy had saved the sides of his head and started wearing the remaining hair up in a mohawk. THis required much more work than he initially planned and Matt claims to have lost brain cells from the amount of hair gel kept in their room that semester.

James: In his junior year of high school he dyed his hair platinum blonde. He is not sure why he did it exactly, it just felt like it needed to be done. His parents were furious which lead to another a ray of colors being planted on top of his head, up until his senior year where he had a change of heart and dyed it back to its original color as he started applying to colleges.

Anatoly: When they first arrived in America Anatoly grew his hair out long enough to have a pony tail. Vlad told him it was the stupidest look in the world but he didn’t care, he wanted it, not being in russia for the first time he needed to explore different gender roles for a bit. He did eventually cut it off since it became too much work to keep up with.

Vladimir: After his brother died he saved him head. It was more in a panic than anything else. He just needed a change something to make it feel real, if he looked in the mirror and saw what he always saw then he should be able to turn and see his brother by his side like he always did.
