In Minrathous, she was sold into slavery by her parents so they could pay off their debts. She was on a slaver ship bound for the city of Carastes when the Qunari boarded and captured the vessel. Initially deemed an unsuitable convert, she would have been rendered a mindless laborer if not for the intervention of Salit, a high-ranking Ben-Hassrath agent, who formally requested that the tammasrans turn the girl over to him so he could train her to become a Tallis - ‘those who solve’.
Ashton looked down at his wrists, seven tally marks were etched
onto his tan skin, and they were all black.
He remembered being told as a child that these tally marks
where used to count the time that you had fallen in love, each one appearing on
your wrist. He didn’t understand it at first, but as he saw his moms tally
marks as well as those around him, he slowly started understanding it.
There were four different types of tally marks, each with
its own meaning. If you love someone and they love you back, it would be a
bright red color, showing that your hearts burning with love for each other.
But if both of them fall out love, or break up, the bright red color would just
change a dark red color, a permanent reminder of the love you both shared for
each other. At some point any of the tally marks would scar, telling you that
the person that you loved had died. And the last color was black, like the way
Ashton’s were right now, meaning that you loved someone that didn’t love you
He continued staring at his tally marks; he wondered if one
day his wrist would have a bright red tally mark that would never fade to a
dark red. Most people his age would either be covered with tally marks some red
some black, or have few red tally marks, but very few were like him, very few
have never been officially loved in return.
He could name each tally mark and the person behind each
one. His first tally mark was from a girl who he had met one summer, to him she
was so beautiful and amazing that he quickly got a tally mark, but to her, he
was just a friend. The second one who he rather not remember since she
basically ignored him once she realized that his tally mark was for her. However
the last tally mark he got was the most painful, he had been dating this girl
for quite some time, and eventually he fell in love and a new tally mark was on
his wrist, he was happy because he knew that eventually that tally mark would
be red, it just had to, they had been dating for a while now, so it was a
matter of time before they would both have matching bright red tally marks, his
first official red tally mark.
Then one day he went on a date with her, he took her to the
beach, seeing as how they both liked the beach, but as he went to go pick her
up, he was his heart was shattered. Because there on her wrist was a bright red
mark etched on her skin, he looked down at his wrist and noticed that it was black;
it didn’t turn red at all. She was in love with someone else while they were
dating, and by the color of the mark, whoever that person was, he or she was in
love with her too. he didn’t even bother to ask for an explanation, there was
no point, an explanation wouldn’t mend his broken heart, it wouldn’t make the
tally mark on his wrist become red, it wouldn’t even make it disappear, he just
turned around and never talked to her again.
Ashton just wanted to fall in love with someone and have
them love him back in return, was that really such a hard thing to ask for. He
didn’t think it was, people had red tally marks, some people only had red ones,
yet he couldn’t even get one. Was he just not meant to be loved by someone? Because
with his seven black tally marks, it seemed like maybe he really wasn’t meant
to be loved.
He looked out his window and noticed that it was a nice day;
he decided to go out for some sun as well as get some tea from a local coffee
shop that was just amazing. Ashton wouldn’t call himself observant, but when it
came to people’s tally marks he had a Hawkeye for them. His eyes would always
wonder to people’s wrist, seeing them with tally marks, some red, some black,
some even scared.
He just couldn’t help but get jealous of them, why couldn’t
he be like that?
Ashton was at the doorstep of the coffee shop, he quickly
opened the door, eager to order his tea hoping that tit would ease his jealous
mind, and helping forget everything about the tally marks for a while. But as
he quickly pushed the door in, he heard someone let out a small yelp and land
on the floor.
He quickly pulled the door instead and there a girl with
(h/c) sat on the floor her shirt stained with the drink she had ordered.
“I am so sorry, I didn’t know you were there”, he quickly
said as he held out his hand to help you up, his mind completely forgetting about
the tally marks.
“No its fine, I shouldn’t have been standing too close to
the door to begin with”, you said with a shy smile as you got up yourself
instead of taking his hand, making Ashton slowly lower his hand a bit hurt that
you didn’t even take his help.
“Here let me buy you your drink, I’m really sorry about your
shirt, hopefully it doesn’t stain”, he said seeing the mess on the floor.
“No its just lemonade nothing a quick wash can’t handle”,
you said as you reached for a napkin dispenser on a nearby table and began to
dry the wet spot.
“That’s good, I’m still sorry by the way, here let me go get
you another drink”, he said as he quickly got in line to place your order and
You were drying your shirt, never once looking at the person
knocked you down. You knew that you wouldn’t be able to fully dry it, so you
quickly went to the restroom to go wash your hands to keep them from going sticky
from the lemonade. When you exited the restroom, and noticed that right by the entrance
was a messy dirty blonde haired boy looking around for someone. His eyes
wondered around the coffee shop, his hazel colored eyes landed on you and you
saw a small smile come on his lips as he made his way over to you, with a tea
and lemonade in hand.
“Here you go”, he said handing you a cup full of lemonade.
You took the drink in hand, and getting a good look of the
person that had knocked you down. He was actually really attractive, his messy
hair complementing his jaw line, and noticed that he was fairly tall. Being close
to a window allowed the sunlight to not only make his skin glow, but made his
hazel eyes brighten up, seeing an array of colors swirl in his eyes, something
really unique to you. But the one thing that made him stand out from everyone
that you had met, was that there on his wrist were seven black tally marks, you
slightly looked making sure that you were seeing them correctly. But yea seven
black tally marks, and nothing other than that.
You took a quick sip of your drink, hoping that he didn’t
catch you staring at his wrist, or staring at him in general.
“Thanks Ashton”, you said with a smile on your face.
His head tilted to the side in confusion, “how do you know
my name? Do I know you?” he said as he tried to remember if he had met you
previously, even though he was sure that he had never met you before.
“It’s written on the cup”, you said with a laugh, as you
raised your cup to point at the name that was written there, which sure enough
was his, “I’m (Y/N)”
He smiled, he didn’t know why but there was something about
your cheerful aura that made him smile as well. (Y/N), he said the name over
and over in his mind, it suited you.
“I’m still sorry (Y/N)”, he said testing how your name sound
coming out of his mouth.
It sounded nice.
“don’t worry about it, it’s in the past already, no point in
crying over spilled milk, or in this case…spilled lemonade”, you said wanting
him to know that you weren’t mad at him, just wanting to make him happy and not
think that it was his fault.
Ashton let out a laugh, it was a cheesy joke, but it still
made him laugh nonetheless, your cheerfulness really was rubbing off on him, he
just couldn’t help but be drawn to it.
“I guess your right”, he smiled.
His eyes drifted down to your wrists, he spotted your tally
marks. There were five tally marks, three were a faded red color and the other two
were black. Black, red, red, black, red that was the order of your marks. He couldn’t
understand why but it eased him knowing that there wasn’t a bright red tally
mark etched on your skin, but seeing those red marks there did bother him a
bit, you were loved at some point, making him feel embarrassed of his seven
black marks, making him tuck his hand behind him not wanting you see how bad he
was at love.
You quickly noticed Ashton’s smile drop, you wondered what
had occurred but as you noticed that he was staring down at your wrist, and you
knew immediately what had upset him.
“Hey don’t compare yourself to me, I’m sure you’ll get a
bright red tally soon enough”, you said hoping to ease his feelings.
“I guess, but I mean, when you have this many”, he said
lifting up his tally marks for you to see them more clearly, “it’s hard to
believe that will happen anytime soon”
“Hey don’t give up on love Ashton”, you said with a smile.
“Like I said it’s hard to believe that especially when it’s
someone that doesn’t understand”, he said with a bit of resentment in his
“What do you mean?”
“You don’t know what I’m feeling like, you have red marks, three
of them, and I don’t even have one”, he said with a pained voice.
“Then how about we help you find your first red tally mark?”
you said with a smile, hoping that he would cheer up.
