talking about fictional characters is weird

i saw a post abt the mcelroys and their fandom and since i didnt agree entirely w/ the op and my brain went off on a related tangent im making my own post:

i think the level of scrutiny/boundary crossing/pedestal placing that goes on with people who get overly involved in the lives of minor internet celebrities (who dont have the money to protect themselves from the audience) is really uncomfortable and weird at best and grotesque invasions of privacy at worst. the way people use the same attitudes to talk about/discuss real people as they do fictional characters is unsettling and i think there needs to be a mass call for some empathy in fandoms that involve real people. at the very least the fandom needs to coach themselves on maintaining a respectable distance from the people who work hard to provide them with entertainment, instead of feeling entitled to every single aspect of their being.

My TF2 Comic Series

This is a rough idea as to how I’d plan out a new on-going TF2 series if I were given the chance, based on what I know of established plot and my major assumptions about what some of the final developments are likely to be. When (if?) part 7 of the current TF2 comics storyline gets released, a lot of this may get rendered moot. I’m just spit-balling, anyway. It’s fun!

So! Here we go.

Picking back up in the spring of 1974. Everything is different yet also pretty much exactly the same.

Demo gets saddled with Merasmus, first as a roommate, then as a magical mentor. Merasmus knows he must eventually train a successor to carry his arcane knowledge into the future, and while this guy may be drunk half the time, he actually has a lot of potential. And besides, he did Merasmus a solid when he took him in. So Demo embarks on a wondrous-yet-annoying quest to unlock his magical potential and claim his alchemical heritage. Merasmus and Mrs. DeGroot get along like they’ve been friends their whole lives, of course. Demo’s home life becomes a wacky supernatural sitcom starring himself, Merasmus, his mum, and his three familiars Eyelander, Bombnomicon, and Mini Monoculous. (Those three have their own weird dynamic. None of them actually like each other very much.) And hey, magic powers!!!!

Zhanna and Soldier have the biggest, stupidest, most elaborate Hawaiian wedding ever because it’s the furthest thing from that frozen Siberian hellscape she could imagine. (Soldier grumbles a bit that it’s barely even America, but finally relents.) Literally everyone is invited, including any and all NPCs, old enemies, the ghost of Tom Jones, a clan of raccoons, and close family of the mercs. We get to meet Soldier’s weirdly normal family and catch up with Zhanna’s family. Soldier turns into a drama-bomb groomzilla while Zhanna is just overwhelmed with happiness. She falls into a coma from the mental shock and is roused out of it when magical intervention annoys her into returning to reality. Once married, they immediately begin furiously attempting to conceive a child. Like, more than they were before.

Heavy himself is adjusting to his new family situation and being a little overbearing (unintentionally.) His mother is happy to be taken care of, so he moves her to America and builds her a beautiful cottage not too far from where he lives. It has all the amenities, including a high-powered laser mounted on the roof. Zhanna is starting her own family, and he’s secretly giddy at the idea of being an uncle. Yana and Bronislava are both off on their own world-trotting adventures, but they don’t write him as often as he would like. He’s collecting the selfies they mail him from all the exotic locations they visit into a photo album, which he likes to flip through and feel that big brother combination of pride and worry.

Medic has to deal with his past, such as his parents. He’s finally gotten around to going through the box of keepsakes and documents left to him by his mother, where he makes some interesting discoveries, and his elderly father comes sniffing around, presumably to take advantage of his estranged son’s advances in rejuvenatory medicine. Meanwhile, occasional bids from Mephisto, Perdition Representative and current minority shareholder of his souls, to tempt him into trading for more favors are casually swatted away. (I mean, until he actually wants something he can’t accomplish himself.) Medic really shouldn’t underestimate a sufficiently pissed-off devil, though. They have ways.

Throughout every story, hints are occasionally dropped that Pyro is an alien. Some are subtle, some… less so. Someone important apparently takes notice when Pyro begins to be followed around by 70s-era X-Files style FBI agents. Balloonicorn delights in terrorizing them, but Pyro is looking forward to making real good friends! Ultimately, nothing is ever revealed one way or another about Pyro’s nature, so everyone just ends up kind of confused.

Saxton Hale has stepped down as the big boss of Mann Co (handed over to Miss Pauling, who will sometimes call for advice) but remains an investor. He and Mags are now a power couple, but he’s going through a mid-life crisis in which he’s seeking out and wrestling the most legendary, dangerous monsters in the world, which is getting dangerous even for him. Mags has her own complicated feelings about the rekindled relationship, including the baggage from her past marriages, brief as they were. Eventually Saxton must face the fact that the most challenging foe he must wrestle into submission is… HIS DUTY TO MANKIND (and Mags.) They return to Australia to help rebuild after the loss of all the world’s Australium and oppose Charles Darling’s growing post-apocalyptic Thunderdome-esque zoo-based empire.

Sniper has manned a disastrous submarine expedition to the sunken ruins of New Zealand (because he built it himself and refused to ask for help) and barely survived. He reluctantly asks his fellow mercs and Miss Pauling for help in a second expedition, recovering artifacts of his lost heritage in return for sharing it with Mann Co. He also gets roped into Mad Max-esque adventures with Saxton Hale and Mags. And of course, his birth parents are still at-large, which he doesn’t know how to deal with AT ALL.

Miss Pauling is juggling several explosives at once. First, she’s just getting the hang of being Mann Co. boss (including having people do things FOR HER, her assistants Bidwell and Reddy), dealing with the terrorist cult Rise & Shine that’s out to ruin the company, hiring new staff (Driver to help with the cult situation and a new merc liaison to fill her old role, Chicken Girl), forging her vision for the future of Mann Co., and deciding how to deal with the company’s inconvenient ward Olivia Mann. She has her fair share of frazzled moments and sudden urges to dump all her responsibilities and run far, far away, but she never does. That’s not who she is. Oh, and she gets a girlfriend, so that’s nice.

The new liaison Chicken Girl (as everyone insists on calling her after Scout recognizes her) doesn’t actually remember Scout and finds him very aggravating, but not enough to quit her new super-legit job, which she’s actually very good at, once she gets the hang of it. She just wishes they’d stop calling her Chicken Girl. Just “Chick” isn’t an acceptable substitute.

Engie is increasingly called on by Miss Pauling to consult on developing exciting new tech for Mann Co, which is especially important in a world without Australium to fuel effortless scientific discovery. The McMANN is his first such success, and he’s so excited and proud! He collaborated with Driver, the new blood, on its final design, but it was 95% his project. (He’s pretty sure that goes without saying.) Engie spends a lot of his time quietly tinkering away at ideas to make the McMANN even better, but he cooking up some other stuff that he knows Miss Pauling will be interested in. Even though some of it’s a little… weird.

Scout, Spy, and Scout’s ma are awkwardly trying to form a conventional family unit. This is extremely complicated because Scout is still convinced his father is Tom Jones and there are all those older brothers to deal with. The most successful moments happen when Scout’s ma tricks the two of them into spending time with her for a nice outing like a picnic at an outdoor concert, a baseball game, a demolition derby, etc. (Of course, there are shenanigans.) We also learn about the history behind Scout’s parentage.

The Mann brothers are all still hanging around as increasingly irrelevant ghosts, doing silly ghost stuff. Since they’re triplets, none of them can move on unless they all do, and it’s a constant source of arguments. Redmond & Blutarch just want to pull spooky pranks on people, but Gray takes as much time as he can to try to influence and even possess his daughter Olivia, which she eventually starts fighting.

I would include Driver in this new set-up, as previously mentioned. As the new recruit, she’d be the one to ask questions about stuff the audience might want answers to, which is a useful function in fiction where a bunch of crazy shit happens all the time. She’d have her own little character arcs, too, but I’ve gone on enough about all that.

And do keep an eye on that weird new cult that has it out for Mann Co. Rise & Shine? Yeah, I’ve mentioned them a few times. To the public, they seem so cute and harmless, with their chubby smiling mascot of a guru, talk show coverage, novelty songs, and funny comic book series. But we know better.

some facts:

  • kakasaku is a shit ship and it’s creepy to ship a grown man with a girl he’s been teaching since she was 12. i dont care if she’s an adult now. y’all are nasty
  • hinata’s character got a shit wrap and it’s honestly really sad and misogynistic the way her plot got thrown aside for the sake of romance and fanservice. that doesn’t mean the way y’all talk about her being useless trash is no longer weird. blame the real life men who created this fictional female character.
  • hinata didn’t “ruin naruto’s life”. they have an unhappy marriage. that’s just as much on him as her, if not more so. mostly it’s on kishimoto.
  • i love sasuke but sakura deserves so much better than him and we should all know this
  • o also if u dont like naruto uzumaki like what r u even doing in this fandom
  • thanks for ur time

It was never about a TV show.

I’ve been in several TV fandoms over the years. Star Trek, Mork and Mindy, Beauty and the Beast, Moonlighting, Doogie Howser, 90210, Dark Angel, Ally McBeal, Doctor Who, House, Lie to Me, Burn Notice, Firefly, Gilmore Girls, The Office, HIMYM, White Collar, Downton Abbey, Sherlock, Outlander, etc.

I’ve always loved watching TV shows with other people and analyzing the story, the characters, the ships, the writing…I get thinky and geek out. I love it. For almost a few decades, I’ve had my husband to do that with.

So, when my husband decided to stop watching OUAT with me after season four, I came here. Why? Because people out there think I’m weird when I talk spec, talk headcanons, multiship, get excited over a fictional wedding, or watch/read spoilers and talk about them. When I’m, y’know…me.

I’ve made some great friends who were simply fellow geeks. Why? Because you let me be me. You tell me it’s not only okay, but it’s awesome. Because you get the obsession, the excitement, the unabashed joy when a show or movie or book or comic series or game or thing is great. You get the disappointment, the sadness, the rage, the upset, the sick feeling in your stomach when something goes down and it means your favorite thing is about to change or go away.

When Star Trek: TNG went to movies and wasn’t my constant…

When my OTP finally got together on Moonlighting and then the writing went to shit…

When they cancelled Dark Angel just as the cops and the transgenics were at a standoff…

I rage quit Ally McBeal when RDJ went to prison and Larry left. That Sting solo is still my fave

FIREFLY. No explanation needed.

FUCKING DOOMSDAY. Pink and yellow papercut was my LOVE on Doctor Who.

(same show): When the Ponds got taken by Manhattan.

House and Cuddy. WTF.

When Matthew died on Downton Abbey, I didn’t watch for a whole season. I was in mourning.

Hydra Cap

And then Once Upon a Time killed Killian a handful of times, and killed Robin, and here we are.

I don’t know if I’ll watch season 7 of OUAT, if it happens. I might not like it. If I don’t, I don’t. I’ll figure things out. I get why Jennifer left, and that’s cool. She and I are the same age. I just made a huge life-change as well. It happens. It doesn’t mean I’m not worried about Emma, or Henry, or Hook, or the Charmings, or Regina, or Storybrooke.

But I’ve been here before, and I’ll be here again, I’m sure. So will you. The only constant is change.

So, I’ve got your back, and you’ve got mine, no matter what show or movie or book comes next.

I’ll get sappy and personal under the cut:

My heart hurts, but in a very bittersweet way. I am content, because this is the very essence of NaLu - their adventures. Mashima only decided to show them continuing that very aspect. But it’s not like the end of Fairy Tail is the end of Natsu and Lucy’s lifespans. They’re gonna keep on going, and this might sound super weird simply because I am talking about fictional characters, but just because we didn’t see it happen, doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen.

And hey, an official translation hasn’t been released yet. Let’s wait and see what Lucy and Natsu have to say.

yo it is one thing to not like a character or a ship

but to take that dislike or hatred out on the ACTOR HIMSELF is a new level of fucked up I didn’t realize antis were capable of

Adam Driver is not Kylo Ren.

Adam Driver does not get to decide when and where he promotes Kylo - the character is a walking spoiler, and as much as he is awkward or maybe shy, I’m sure he wants to promote the character he’s worked SO hard for as anyone would. He’s talked about this character being his most important and personal role to him yet. BUT, that does not make him a villainous guy who killed his own father, like - the leaps in logic that takes!

It is so weird to me that people are accusing him of not “caring” about SW or his own fandom, and using that as further justification to push your weird SUPER hatred of fictional characters into this way-too-real-world perspective you have of fiction.

Adam CLEARLY doesn’t get to make these choices about promotion or appearances, because he’s under a *contract.*

You may hate a character, you may hate a ship. But y’all take it to a REAL level I cannot understand… Adam Driver is a perfectly nice guy who ain’t done shit to any of y’all.

Please keep some perspective, fandom. Please separate the world of fiction from the real world. Hating fictional characters does little to no damage.

Hating real people who like or portray the fictional character leads to some messed up behavior and consequences.

anonymous asked:

sorry for asking this, but do you think otayuri is a pedophillic relationship? so many people ship it (I personally don't because I feel weird about yuri being 15) and I don't know if it's ok or not..

BREATHES HEAVILY……… ok so like, we’re talking about fictional characters here so I don’t want to get too serious about this, but since you asked, here’s my answer:

so, strictly speaking, by law it is considered pedophilia in countries where the age of consent is 18, but this is grey area cause depending on which country you’re from where the ages of consent differ, it may or may not be considered pedophilia.

BUT ANYWAYS, again, we’re talking about fiction here, so honestly I don’t think it’s something to think too much into. As for whether or not it’s okay, I think that’s something you’ve got to decide for yourself to be honest! I personally ship Otayuri and so I’d say it’s completely fine, but some people may say otherwise.

So at the end of the day, I think you should just do what you’re comfortable with. If you want to ship it, ship it, if you don’t, then don’t. It’s that simple, really. As long as everyone’s respectful to each other’s opinions then I think everything’s good.

Hey Twilight, I know you're somewhat into role-playing, since you talked about dressing up as Starswirl the Bearded and going to a convention in the past. Have you ever considered answering letters from real people as if you were a fictional character you like? Probably sounds weird but it might be fun.

I do enjoy role-playing games and perhaps some dressing up at appropriate times. Writing letters pretending to be a fictional character though? I suppose it’s an exercise in character writing but I can’t imagine anypony would want to read that.

Not that I have time to do such writing, I’m already busy answering letters as myself.

Fictional characters can make you happier than real people. You can use them to cope with stuff. You can enjoy spending time with them, or thinking about them, or talking about them just as much or more than spending time with real people. It’s ok. You aren’t weird or creepy or bad. They mean something to you, and it’s important to hold onto them. You don’t need to feel ashamed or embarrassed because you like fiction better than reality sometimes, most times, or ALL the time. That’s what fiction is there for.

I know that in a lot of fandoms, there’s often worry about upsetting people, and that is the last thing I would want to do, but I also don’t want to just be a blogger and not add any personality to my posts. So, here are a few unpopular opinions or confessions. However, I will not say anything bad about things people care passionately about, such as certain ships or characters. I might say if I didn’t like someone but I won’t start criticising them and I will certainly NOT say anything bad about the cast or writers or any of the crew.

1) I didn’t like the soulless Sam storyline. Nothing against Jared’s performance or the writing or the idea itself, and there were definitely some great moments, but on a whole, I wasn’t the biggest fan. For several reasons, however one of them is the interactions with the characters. Even when Dean was a demon he still had his soul. A twisted version, but it was still Dean in a way. As for when Cas lost his memory, or the actors played a different character to their most prominent one, it’s again different. The characters were different, just played by the same actor. However, having “Sam” there, memories and everything else intact, but removing such an integral part of him and therefore, taking away his interactions with Dean and Cas and Bobby, taking away his emotions when even monsters feel, maybe just in a different way, it just didn’t work with me. That’s not the only reason, but I just didn’t like it.

2) While Swan Song is one of the highest rated and said to be one of the best episodes, it wasn’t like that for me at all and it worries me. It was supposed to be the series finale and they ended it with all main characters being separated. While I don’t think that will be the same way they do eventually end the show, not only because it would be redundant but also because all characters have grown a lot, I still didn’t like it. I knew that was not the end, it was already out when I binge watched the seasons, but even without that thought, it was probably my least favourite season finale and the fact that they even considered ending the show that way still upsets me and scares me in a way.

3) Mark was not my favourite Lucifer. Nothing against the actor, but I preferred Misha over Mark or Jared. My reasoning is Mark was the one who brought the character to life, and did a fantastic job, but he had freedom to play, to make the character the way he wanted, while Misha didn’t have that liberty and he still played it perfectly, just as Mark did, maintaining the iconic personality and even movements and body language of the show’s version of Lucifer. I think, in a way, that’s even more difficult. Jared played Lucifer completely different to Sam, and he also did a great job, but there was still something about it that didn’t sit that right with me. Not that Jared’s performance was in any way bad, but there was just something about it. Admittedly, he didn’t have that much time as the character, but from the very first scene in which Misha played him, I fell in love with his version, which is a weird sentence when talking about Satan, but it’s true.

4) I preferred the show after season 8. I loved, with all my heart, seasons 4 and 5, definitely some of my favourites, I didn’t like season 6, 7, and most of 8 that much, not enough Cas in the latter two, but seasons 9 and 11 were my favourites and season 10 was very interesting and involved my all time favourite episode, fan fiction. The first 3 were also good, but Cas….do I need to elaborate?

5) Sam was written out of character in season 12. I hated Mary, I did, and I don’t even need to pretend I didn’t as I know about 90% of the fandom agree, but, while I honestly love Sam, he also annoyed me somewhat in season 12. He was the one saying the kill first question later technique isn’t right, how they shouldn’t kill Kate or Garth when they first found out about them, yet he’s perfectly okay with saying yes to working with people who kill anyone who’s a “monster”, no matter if they are innocent or not. It was a bit fixed when Garth was mentioned in the werewolf episode, but it still wasn’t right with me.

So, goodbye. I think I upset most of the fandom with this but I have a couple of final notes. One, please don’t kill me, and two, I am in no way saying you can’t disagree with me.

Just to clear up any potential confusion, any character I have not outright said I dislike, I have no problem with, I just maybe didn’t like a certain story they were involved with. But no matter what happens or what people think, I will always be a part of this fandom and I will always respect everyone involved with this beautiful show and I will always love the characters and root for them. Even when they are in hell. Let’s go team free will!

We try to take as much as we can from life instead of movies, and one of the things that I’ve learned in life — and its been very hard to learn and I don’t always remember it — is that the one thing you don’t want, when you’re battling someone you love, is to win. Winning can be fatal to relationships, and I’m fascinated by the idea of the win that’s also a loss. I think that’s one of the things that we kept exploring this season, hopefully in different ways between Chuck and Jimmy. And that ironically sometimes — for instance when Chuck loses so badly in the courtroom — in a weird way that is a loss for Jimmy and a win for Chuck.

One of the most difficult things to do in life is to truly change. We always talk about character change in fiction, and we are fascinated by that. And certainly people exhibit change. But intentional change is incredibly difficult. Unintentional change, maybe not quite so difficult. These are all the things we talk about a lot in the writer’s room.

The fact that people ship David and max romantically confuses me like it's pedophillia max is 10 David is 24

It’s ok to feel confused. There are many people and everyone has their own preference for fictional characters ,Maybe their preference is kinda weird or scary ,but they must keep the thing in tag and their own and they know/realize the different between reality and fiction

If you decide not to accept their thing , it’s ok . just understand everyone has their own preference , as long as they keep to themselves and don’t hurt others . Remember it’s all fictional . I do not support or condone pedophillia in real life.

If you feel uncomfortable about this ship , please block the tag , if you want to talk to me , we can use message to talk !

ok so basically this person made a huge post about how people should stop sexualizing the gmw character and actors that are minors especially rowan. she spoke about how people were counting down the days until peyton was 18 and how that's wrong. fanfic writers and others took offense to this post and there was a bunch of anons attacking people and people talking about being the queen of the fandom. it was just a big mess. idek how to explain really

Yea, I read the post. I mean, it’s pretty fucking disgusting to write smut about a 15 year old. Personally I feel weird reading any smut-type fan fiction involving actors in general (not the characters they play, but the real life actors) because those are like, real people, you know? What if you went online and found those kinds of stories about yourself? Or your boyfriend or husband or wife or brother? It’s just really intrusive and icky to me, but for those people to be 15 years old like Rowan? Seriously pretty fucked up.

As far as the characters go I mean aging them is OK I guess, but smut fic is still pretty iffy, I mean if you are picturing these things in your head, you’re picturing Riley and Maya’s 16 year old faces. So…kind of not OK.

I’m with them on this one. Obiovusly people have the right to write whatever they want, and no one can stop or control that. But on the other hand, people have a right to voice their concerns on the matter as well.

Either way I don’t understand the drama or why anyone would ever send out a death threat to anyone else over anything, especially Disney Channel Smut Fic. Like, come on guys, there are better ways to spend your energy.

As far as the “queen of the fandom”, that’s pretty ridiculous. Nobody is the queen of anything. Everyone who loves GMW loves it equally and is just as important as the next fan, regardless of the number of followers they have.

Is this what the Riley/Lucas fans argue over?? I’m just over hear reminicising about stolen glances and longing hugs between two smol beans who don’t even know they  love each other yet because they’re too young to know what love is #RIARKLECAMP4EVA
