taiwan not china

If U.S. diplomacy with China falls apart, it could have major ramifications

  • Trump continued to needle at China Sunday by openly questioning the so-called “one China policy” on Fox News.
  • China then issued a stern rebuke to Trump’s comments early Monday through its foreign minister.
  • “I don’t know why we have to be bound by a one China policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade,” Trump said Sunday, adding, “I don’t want China dictating to me.”
  • That provocative language prompted a Monday editorial in China’s state-run newspaper describing Trump’s diplomacy as “ignorant as a child.”
  • On Dec. 8, China flew a long-range nuclear bomber outside of the nation for the first time since the Taiwan phone call — reportedly a symbolic show of strength.
  • The threat of trade war with China is a real risk to Americans, experts warn.
  • Policy analysts also warn that military conflict could be on the table if aggression between China and the U.S. escalates further. Read more
re: Taiwan and China

For those people I see on my dash worried about China retaliating against the US?  I don’t think you understand the situation.

If there is retaliation, it’s Taiwan who will suffer.  The Chinese conducted “military exercises” off the coast of Taiwan in the summer of 1995 after then-president Lee Teng-hui gave a speech at Cornell about Taiwanese democratization.  There were missiles pointed in the general direction of the island.

There are still missiles along the coast of China today, and it’s a simple thing to deliver a message to the US via Taiwan.  From a US Department of Defense report released in 2015:

The People’s Republic of China (PRC) continues to pursue a long-term, comprehensive military modernization program designed to improve its armed forces’ capacity to fight short-duration, highintensity regional conflicts. Preparing for potential conflict in the Taiwan Strait remains the focus and primary driver of China’s military investment; however, the PRC is increasing its emphasis on preparations for contingencies other than Taiwan, such as contingencies in the East China Sea and South China Sea.

During 2014, the PLA continued to improve its capabilities for theater contingencies, including: cruise missiles; short- and mediumrange ballistic missiles; high performance aircraft; integrated air defense; information operations; and amphibious and airborne assault.

That isn’t to say US forces aren’t going to be involved, because the US does operate a fleet in the east Asian theater.  Trump doesn’t know what he’s doing here, doesn’t understand the history, doesn’t realize how fragile the peace is.

I hope he doesn’t make any more brash moves, but I remain pessimistic.

Happy Lunar New Year! \(‘v’)/

I matched the characters to the zodiac the best I could. (My housemate said I should’ve made Prussia the cat, but I thought that was too sad.) Please don’t make fun of my animal anatomy. I can’t draw animals. 'OTL

If you can’t read my handwriting, a full list of the zodiac descriptions are below. They aren’t accurate, obviously. I took the traits from different sources.
