Happy Birthday to Paul Gauguin, born on this day 1848!

Gauguin wanted to present imaginative, evocative images that would transcend the limitations of any one culture. Made soon after the artist arrived in Tahiti in 1891, “Hina with Two Attendants” (1891-93) features the Polynesian goddess of the moon. Because Tahitian religious art had been destroyed decades earlier by missionaries, Gauguin invented Hina’s appearance. Her facial features were inspired by Tahitian women, while the body proportions and pose were adapted from photographs of Buddhist temple art in Borobudur, Java.

See it on view in “Masterworks from the Hirshhorn Collection” opening on Thursday!
