Notes: I legitmately cried when reading this (everyone else’s mileage may vary). OneRoom is really good at generating strong emotional responses, at least in my opinion. As usual, the art is lovely. The story is very simple: it’s Yata’s birthday, and Fushimi shows up at his apartment with a small paper crown. Through flashbacks, we learn that the crown was something Yata had insisted on for Fushimi’s birthday and it’s become something of a tradition. While it’s his birthday, Yata gets to ask for whatever he wants. So most of the doujinshi is really light-hearted, the two of them hanging out together in Yata’s apartment for just the one day. Then Fushimi goes to leave and Yata comes to see him off, and that’s when he asks for one more thing. I won’t spoil it, but I think you can probably guess. As bittersweet as the ending is, the very last scene does lean more to the ‘sweet’ end of things. It’s really very nice, so go read it!
So I was recently re-watching one of my favorite animes: K, and I happened to notice something rather heartbreaking. I went ahead and took some screenshots to back up my little theory so bear with me.
So I was watching episode 1.06 (season 1 ep 6) which is where we get a sort of backstory to go along with the red clan and Tartara Totsuka’s relationship and significance to Suoh Mikoto and the others. Now I really hope I’m not the only person who was moved to tears in that episode but after watching it a third time (I have a lot of free time) I noticed something that only breaks my heart even more. The first picture I have here is Totsuka 3 years before he was killed, Mikoto is now a king and Totsuka is hanging out at the HOMRA bar. I’d like to focus on his left ear (I know I know it’s not really very important) where he has a piercing.
The second picture is of Mikoto at the same time, once again notice his left ear. No piercing right?
Next is another picture of Mikoto (and Anna), three months before Totsuka’s murder, once again if we look at his left ear we see no piercing.
Now of course every time we see Totsuka we see that little piercing. The beginning of the show occurs almost immediately after Totsuka’s murder, and throughout the entire show Mikoto is basically wearing the same thing. So here in the last picture is the reason for my pain, Mikoto after his friend’s muder, and what do we see on his left ear!!??
So my little theory is that after Totsuka’s death, one small way that Mikoto coped was by getting an identical piercing in the exact same place as Totsuka’s as a remembrance of him and what he believed Mikoto’s powers were truly for.
Yea. So that’s how I ended up crying over a piercing. Sorry for the long post.
