Do state capitals get offended when someone confuses them for another city? I know you said state capitalship doesn't mean that much, but does Albany get a tiny bit bitter when someone says the capital of NYS is New York City?
Cities get offended v. easily they are basically cats. ‘THis is mine. And THIS is mine. And if you don’t give me your food/affection I’m going to knock a vase off the table’ so if you get their name wrong they’re going to be annoyed. But humans get annoyed if you get their name wrong too so.
And when it comes to their titles– while there’s not a blanket reaction politically speaking it can be pretty charged situation. Cities need to grow, they need to have people come in and add to the economy they need to have their children stay. If a State-Capital is pretty sure of themselves & their reputation they’re more relaxed about it, if not… Think if you were a celebrity who needed their name to carry weight: and everyone kept thinking your roles belonged to someone else: pretty worrying right? That shit damages your career. So it’s a *concern* definitely and a bit of a pissing contest and while it doesn’t add much to their life/powers/survival-of-fire stuff it can add to their quality of life.
For a City like Albany in particular it’s a bit more extreme. Being so close to something like New York you’re constantly afraid of getting absorbed and his title being ignored/passed over to New York automatically is an aspect of that. No one knowing he’s the state capital is actually kind of a threat? That’s part of his identity being handed over to something that is absolutely trying to get as much land & people as possible. This is a situation a lot of little Cities who are right next to big/powerful/famous Capitals have to deal with. New York eats people tbh.
