DIY tank top w/ bow {t-shirt reconstruction}

  • Old t-shirt
  • Scissors
  • Needle & thread / Sewing machine

  1. Cut off the sleeves and neck of the shirt to make a tank top. (if you’re unsure of how to do this, check out this tutorial
  2. Using scraps from the sleeves, cut two rectangles that measure roughly 3 inches by 6 inches.
  3. Place one rectangle on top of the other, with the right sides facing in. Sew them together (around the edges), leaving about an inch. Turn right side out and sew the remaining.
  4. Lay the rectangle flat on the ground and pinch the center from top to bottom. (ugh awkward wording. if the rectangle was a compass, you’d pinch the north and south sides together). Wrap thread around to secure and tie a knot.
  5. Take a long, thin piece of scrap fabric and wrap it around the center of the bow (on top of the thread). Tie in a knot on the back of the bow. Sew into place.
  6. Place the bow on your tank top (I put mine about two inches below the neckline). Sew the center of the bow onto the shirt. I also made a few stitches attaching the top corners of the bow to the shirt, just so it won’t sag. I let the ends dangle, but feel free to sew those down too. Or, if you’d rather not have the ends, tuck them behind the bow and sew them in place there.
