systems of exchange

The Codex Egerton 2895 is an Early Colonial Mixtec manuscript recording the geneaological history of the Mixtec people. The codex presents a blend of traditional Mixtec iconography and Mixtec captions written in the Latin script introduced by the Spanish. The use of the Latin alphabet alongside Mesoamerican writing is common in the colonial period and speaks to the growing relationship between both the indigenous peoples and the Spanish colonists.

ah yes, capitalism: a gem from the wapo local section

“This company is making millions from America’s broken immigration system”

In exchange for their freedom, immigrants sign contracts promising to pay Libre $420 per month while wearing the company’s GPS devices.

Flores had spent his savings fleeing from gangs in El Salvador, with the hope of joining his wife in Los Angeles. After he surrendered to Border Patrol agents in Texas and asked for asylum, ICE sent him to the Northwest Detention Center, a cavernous facility for detained immigrants in Tacoma, and set his bond at $7,500. But Flores was broke. His wife contacted bail bond companies but they required collateral, such as a car or house, that the couple didn’t have.

Flores turned to Libre, a for-profit company whose name means “free” in Spanish. His wife called the company and paid Libre $2,170 — 20 percent of his bond plus fees. Two days later, Flores said in an interview, a Libre employee was waiting for him as he walked out of the detention center, weeping with joy.

The man drove Flores to a McDonald’s and bought him a Big Mac and a smoothie, he said. Afterward, as they drove to the bus station, the Libre employee pulled into an empty parking lot. The man handed him a packet of documents in English — a language Flores does not speak — and told him in Spanish to sign, Flores recalled. Then, he asked Flores a question.

“Where do you want me to put it?”

“Put what?” Flores remembered answering.

“La pulsera,” the man said, using the Spanish word for bracelet. When Flores suggested his wrist, the man scoffed.

“I don’t think you’re going to want to walk around with this on your arm,” the man said, pulling out a GPS monitoring device the size of a pack of cigarettes with a thick band. As the man strapped the device to Flores’s ankle, he told Flores he had to pay Libre $420 a month.

Flores and his wife were unaware he would have to wear the GPS device, according to a lawsuit the couple filed against Libre last May. They also said they thought the fees would go toward repaying the company for the $7,500 bond. Instead, the money merely compensated Libre for its GPS monitoring services until his immigration case was resolved.

Micheal Donovan, Libre’s co-founder and chief executive, disputed those allegations by former clients. He said the company explains its contracts and doesn’t pressure anyone to sign them. He also denied clients are threatened and said Libre has never returned anyone to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for failing to pay. Although some immigrants also report injuries from the GPS devices, he maintained they are safe and fairly priced.

“I care about our clients,” he said. “It would be awesome to not have to charge them any money, but that’s not really the system we live in.”

@kenny-evitt reblogged:

I can’t escape the nagging suspicion that “capitalism” is really just a placeholder for ‘human nature’ or something. What alternative system or ‘ideology’ would work differently? And if there isn’t one, why do you keep criticizing 'capitalism’ specifically?

For one, any student of history can tell you that “human nature” is way way more flexible than you can imagine. Different societies in different ages have done such different things it always boggles my mind. Do you not read the endless tumblr posts about some weirdass and fascinating lost culture?

Western First World fatalism about “human nature” is just an arbitrary collection of cynicisms.

Certainly, many systems of exchange have existed outside markets. As much as everyone likes to mock authoritarianism, many people participate in centrally-directed structures like a military, or within a large corporation. Command and control has problems, but it exists, and it’s not always terrible. So do genuinely tribal economies, where people share on the basis of what the people they care about need (and if gets complicated, it gets into gift economies.)

There have been a lot of systems of exchange beyond capitalism!

***

But, dismiss all that. Let’s say nothing works as well as free market capitalism, at least in terms of avoiding starvation and overly powerful central governments. Let’s call it, to borrow from Churchill “the worst economic system except for all the others.”

So?

Say you had a father who came home drunk and beat you every other day. Your only other options were running away and starving, or fighting him and getting beat every day. It might very well be that accepting this violent abuse is the best possible option you have.

You still have a right to criticize it. You should not worship this father. And, having robbed him of legitimacy, your outlook is different. By knowing he is bad, you do not blame yourself for his punishments. (And you do not blame your little sister when she is the target of the physical rage.) Even with no other options available, criticizing him is all important so that you keep touch with reality. And the real truth of it is, is that he’s a shitty father, you do not deserve to be beaten, and all of that remains even if there’s nowhere else to go.

Capitalism starves people, and then it lies to us that they deserved starvation. Even if no other option were any better (which I do not believe), it is important to always remember that.

pilferingapples  asked:

For the meme: Combeferre and Prouvaire?

I don’t particularly ship this, especially since I have aro default headcanons for both of them, but I’m always down for friend adventures! I assume that’s what you’d want anyway.

who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunter

Combeferre’s not so much a hunter as a wandering naturalist who sometimes goes deeper into the forest than is advisable. Probably he should be more shocked to encounter a werewolf than he is, but to be honest he’s too busy being excited that he’s met a non-human he can interview as well as observe. True, the wolf he found likes to answer his questions in the forms of riddles or short poems, but data are data so he copies it all down diligently.

Prouvaire becomes the first werewolf to have a published poetry collection in an academic journal.

who’s the mermaid and who’s the fisherman

Ok, listen –

Both mermen.

Both fascinated with human culture.

Both make a deal with a (non-murderous, very reasonable) sea witch and disguise themselves as human fishermen (so they can stay near the ocean).

Cue wacky comedy hijinks where they both try to pass themselves off as Totally Human Fishermen and wind up as neighbors, neither knowing that the other is actually a merman. HELLO FELLOW HUMAN, LET US DISCUSS NORMAL HUMAN THINGS. HAHA YES I TOO LOVE HUMAN ACTIVITIES, LIKE WALKING WITH FEET.

They’re neither one learning as much about human culture as they think they are, but at least they’re having a great time.

who’s the witch and who’s the familiar

Prouvaire is a witch, Combeferre is a local forest elemental he lured in with the promise of books.

who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addict

Combeferre is the barista, Prouvaire is the customer who religiously goes to this one coffee shop because he can show up with ridiculous and fanciful custom orders (“last night I had a dream about a coffee that tasted like starlight…”) and Combeferre will take it as an interesting challenge rather than an annoyance.

The two of them have assembled an entire secret menu of drinks together and there are urban legends about what’s on it. There’s at least one blog devoted to chronicling the handful of known drinks regulars have sussed out.

who’s the professor and who’s the TA

Combeferre teaches philosophy in a tiny university with like 5 philosophy grad students – all of whom are busy TAing required first year courses. When Combeferre realizes he needs an assistant from outside the department, the lit department sends over Prouvaire.

It certainly makes class more fun to teach, even if Combeferre makes sure Prouvaire shows him the comments he puts on papers before they go back to the students. Sometimes they need a little…clarification. (Combeferre’s made a collection of his favorites comments, and he suspects Prouvaire puts some of them in just to make Combeferre smile.)

who’s the knight and who’s the prince(ss)

Prince Jehan talks Paladin Combeferre into giving him secret fighting and magic lessons.

who’s the teacher and who’s the single parent

Combeferre’s the teacher, but no one’s quite sure what Prouvaire is. Probably a parent? Why else would he be at all the PTA meetings? But no one can figure out who his kid is either.

(It’s Gavroche; he brings school fliers and waviers and everything else to Bahorel and Prouvaire, who fill in for some of the the parent stuff his own parents never do. But it’s never occurred to either of them that they should tell the school this, hence the confusion.)

who’s the writer and who’s the editor

They both write, and they both haaaaaaaaattttttttte editing their own work and thus have an exchange system worked out. The moment an article or story or poem is “done” they throw it at the other, swearing they never want to see it again. This works quite well for both of them.

Finally Great News!!!

What a day I had yesterday! One I will remember for the rest of my life. June 20, 2017. As most of you know, I’ve been back in Denver for 6 months trying to find a permanent job. It’s been a very difficult and scary time.

8 yrs, 8 months ago - I had a permanent job implementing global solutions at Unisys and got laid off Oct 2, 2008 because I was the last one hired on a team of 20+ yr employees when the markets collapsed. I’ve worked as a Consultant ever since. I’ve taken on very large Mergers and Acquisitions, integrating 30+ systems, ERPs, Health Information Exchanges and set up new Project Management Offices. But I really needed security and to plan for my future. And I want to be based in Denver. You don’t appreciate where you live until you’re forced to leave it, over and over again. So I’ve stayed focused on finding a job here, so happy with my new home and closer to my family. I just wasn’t finding anything at all that excited me or even fit my background. We have 300,000+ new people moving to our area each year over the past 3 years. I guess the secret got out how amazing this place is. Lol

So imagine my shock when I got 2 job offers in one day yesterday after months and months of crickets. One is consulting, leading a global business process / ERP roll out for a company I worked for 25 years ago. Great money, 18 months of work, a 25 min commute. Had it come in last week I would have jumped at the chance. My final interview was with 2 VPs yesterday morning.

But I also interviewed for another firm that is ramping up a new emerging technology, that will use analytics to change people’s behavior, mandated by the court systems. I can create new Implementation processes and engage states and counties to adopt new ways to help people make different choices and influence them to help break addictions and bad behaviors. I will travel 50% of the time and they are expanding out to other countries. In my interview with the CIO we talked about using Emotional Intelligence to lead people to success. A fascinating field to work in. I also learned that my son was their external auditor. He raved about the culture and how they work as a family and how they are just super happy and willing to collaborate on their work. Very different from what I experienced back east!

So I told both of them I would have to sleep on it to make sure I was happy with my decision. I slept better than I have in months, knowing I no longer have to live in my little jail. That alone is worth celebrating! Lol So I’m not choosing money this time, I’m choosing family, helping people, creating new Implementation processes and developing relationships with people making a difference in others life’s. This is something I’ve always had a passion for. I just never could combine the technology piece with it. So I’ve decided. Kind of scary. It’s about the work and my future. Pretty exciting stuff!

And I can finally start planning my trip to Melbourne for the holidays. My son was so excited when I told him they were making sure I could take 2 weeks off. I get 3 weeks vacation total and 4 floating holidays. I haven’t been paid for any time off in years! And 100% paid health benefits. It makes me nervous not knowing what’s going to happen to all of our healthcare. So it’s just too risky for me at my age to have to cover those unknown costs on my own. So I’m going to go start my paperwork to start the background check and let everyone know of my decision. I just needed to see it written down to be 100% sure of my decision. 😁

Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t let all of you know how much your support and friendship has meant to me. The checking in and sharing of our personal lives, beyond Outlander. It amazes me how alike we all are and how geography isn’t important to our friendships or about a non relationship anymore. It’s about about SO MANY OTHER THINGS!! Lol You pulled me out of some pretty deep holes over the past couple years. Saw me through moves, loss of my sweet Precious girl, the amazing adoption of my rescue kitty, saying goodbye to my son who moved 8000 miles away. I will forever be grateful to Outlander because it has enriched my life in so many ways. I’m so grateful for all of you. Thank you for your friendship!! ❤️

Though they haven’t talked in a year, Jensen and Pritchard immediately jump into bickering like good friends or dare-I-suggest ex-lovers. Jensen’s tone is pretty flat in Mankind Divided; his emotional range seems to go from bored to parentally disapproving. But the opening minutes of System Rift are different.

Their entire exchange is so distinct from Mankind Divided’s usual conversations — I was most surprised to find Jensen and Pritchard interrupting each other, which doesn’t seem to happen much in other dialog. This little touch does wonders for making their relationship seem complex and lively.

The code that took America's Apollo 11  to the moon in the 1960's has been published

When programmers at the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory set out to develop the flight software for the Apollo 11 space program in the mid-1960s, the necessary technology did not exist. They had to invent it.

They came up with a new way to store computer programs, called “rope memory,” and created a special version of the assembly programming language. Assembly itself is obscure to many of today’s programmers—it’s very difficult to read, intended to be easily understood by computers, not humans. For the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC), MIT programmers wrote thousands of lines of that esoteric code.

Here’s a very 1960s data visualization of just how much code they wrote—this is Margaret Hamilton, director of software engineering for the project, standing next to a stack of paper containing the software:

The AGC code has been available to the public for quite a while–it was first uploaded by tech researcher Ron Burkey in 2003, after he’d transcribed it from scanned images of the original hardcopies MIT had put online. That is, he manually typed out each line, one by one.

“It was scanned by an airplane pilot named Gary Neff in Colorado,” Burkey said in an email. “MIT got hold of the scans and put them online in the form of page images, which unfortunately had been mutilated in the process to the point of being unreadable in places.” Burkey reconstructed the unreadable parts, he said, using his engineering skills to fill in the blanks.

“Quite a bit later, I managed to get some replacement scans from Gary Neff for the unreadable parts and fortunately found out that the parts I filled in were 100% correct!” he said.

As enormous and successful as Burkey’s project has been, however, the code itself remained somewhat obscure to many of today’s software developers. That was until last Thursday (July 7), when former NASA intern Chris Garry uploaded the software in its entirety to GitHub, the code-sharing site where millions of programmers hang out these days.

Within hours, coders began dissecting the software, particularly looking at the code comments the AGC’s original programmers had written. In programming, comments are plain-English descriptions of what task is being performed at a given point. But as the always-sharp joke detectives in Reddit’s r/ProgrammerHumor section found, many of the comments in the AGC code go beyond boring explanations of the software itself. They’re full of light-hearted jokes and messages, and very 1960s references.

One of the source code files, for example, is called BURN_BABY_BURN--MASTER_IGNITION_ROUTINE, and the opening comments explain why:

About 900 lines into that subroutine, a reader can see the playfulness of the original programming team come through, in the first and last comments in this block of code:

In the file called LUNAR_LANDING_GUIDANCE_EQUATIONS.s, it appears that two lines of code were  meant to be temporary ended up being permanent, against the hopes of one programmer:

In the same file, there’s also code that appears to instruct an astronaut to “crank the silly thing around.”

“That code is all about positioning the antenna for the LR (landing radar),” Burkey explained. “I presume that it’s displaying a code to warn the astronaut to reposition it.”

And in the PINBALL_GAME_BUTTONS_AND_LIGHTS.s file, which is described as “the keyboard and display system program … exchanged between the AGC and the computer operator,” there’s a peculiar Shakespeare quote:

External image

This is likely a reference to the AGC programming language itself, as one Reddit user . The language used predetermined “nouns” and “verbs” to execute operations. The verb pointed out 37, for example, means “Run program,” while the noun 33 means “Time to ignition.”

Now that the code is on GitHub, programmers can actually suggest changes and file issues. And, of course, they have

Any sort of historic analysis of the Soviet Union that relies on analysing past history (and decisions made) under the scope of today’s views, that is abundantly reductionist and ignores the complexities of the Soviet political system in exchange of accepting the word of truth from anti-communist historians - who think Lenin-Stalin were somehow the overseers of every single political decision made in the central committee/party that featured more than two people (and spread out in various communist parties in their respective soviet republics) - is bound to produce bogus, inaccurate, dishonest statements, no matter how much tea you have.
