“My God, Sage. Your eyes. How have I never noticed them?”
That uncomfortable feeling was spreading over me again. “What about them?
“The color,” he breathed. “When you stand in the light. They’re amazing … like molten gold. I could paint those …” He reached toward me but then pulled back. “They’re beautiful. You’re beautiful.

Until now, you have always lived your life alone. Every decision you’ve made has been for you and you alone. Now, and for the rest of your days, your life will be tied to another’s. Every decision you make will be for both of you. What one does affects the other. You are a family, a team … inseparable and unbreakable.

Both of us were constantly boxed in by others’ expectations. It didn’t matter that people expected everything of me and nothing of him. We were still the same, both of us constantly trying to break out of the lines that others had defined for us and be our own person. Adrian Ivashkov — flippant, vampire party boy — was more like me than anyone else knew.

“Lana, you’ll never believe who this is,” exclaimed Mallory. “It’s–”

“Rose Hathaway and Dimitri Belikov,”supplied Lana. Her eyes then fell on Sydney and me, and she arched an eyebrow.

“And Adrian Ivashkov and his infamous wife. I’ve been to Court. I know who the celebrities are.”

“We’re not celebrities,” I assured her, putting my arm around Sydney and nodding toward Rose and Dimitri. “Not like those two.”

Lana’s eyes crinkled at the corners as she smiled at us.

“Aren’t you? Your marriage has been the source of a lot of speculation.”

Knowing Will and his friends had made Magnus swear to himself that he would never again get involved in Shadowhunters’ personal business. Because when you got to know them, you got to care about them. And when you got to care about mortals…                                        They broke your heart.
