Edible Magickal Flowers and Folk Lore

The culinary use of flowers dates back thousands of years to the Chinese, Greeks and Romans. Many cultures use flowers in their traditional cooking, medicine, and magick.

Adding flowers to your food can be a nice way to add color, flavor and a little magickal whimsy. Some are spicy, and some herbaceous, while others are floral and fragrant. The range is surprising. Flower petals can be used in salads and as garnish for desserts, but they also inspire magickal creative uses as well. Use them to make floral spirit water for rituals, as a medicinal tea, or add to a healing spell or love potion….  the possibilities are endless.

TIPS FOR SAFE AND TASTY DINING:

  •        Not all flowers are edible (those listed below are safe for consumption) - As lovely as eating flowers can be, some can also be a little … deadly, so only eat flowers you know to be consumable — if you are uncertain, consult a reference book on edible flowers and plants. (Always refer to the botanical name when verifying whether a flower is safe to eat.)
  •       Just because a flower is edible doesn’t mean it will taste good. Some will be more to your liking than others – it’s all a matter of taste. Keep in mind that the stamen, pistil and sepal of some blossoms are bitter and can contain pollen that may detract from the true flavor of the flower. Consuming only the petals will further heighten the appeal factor.
  •       Eat flowers you have grown yourself, or know to be safe for consumption. Flowers from the florist or nursery have probably been treated with pesticides or other chemicals.
  •       Do not eat roadside flowers or those picked in public parks. Both may have been treated with pesticide or herbicide, and roadside flowers may be polluted by car exhaust.
  •      Eat only the petals, and remove pistils and stamens before eating.
  •      If you suffer from allergies, introduce edible flowers gradually, as they may exacerbate allergies.
  •     To keep flowers fresh, place them on moist paper towels and refrigerate in an airtight container. Some will last up to 10 days this way. Ice water can revitalize limp flowers.

1, Allium
All blossoms from the allium family (leeks, chives, garlic, garlic chives) are edible and flavorful.  Flavors run the gamut from delicate leek to robust garlic. Every part of these plants is edible. Garlic is masculine in nature and associated with the planet Mars, the element fire and the sign Aries. It is sacred to Hecate and is a suitable offering to her left at a crossroads.  Garlic has antibiotic properties, but should not be used directly on wounds or in poultices or salves because it can be irritating to the skin and may inhibit blood clotting.

2. Angelica
Depending on the variety, flowers range from pale lavender-blue to deep rose and have a licorice-like flavor. Believed to have originated in Syria, angelica is now found just about everywhere. In ancient times it was used to ward off the plague and evil and as a cure for poison and… well, just about everything else. Angelica is associated with the angels Michael and Gabriel. It is aligned with the sun and the element of fire and sacred to Venus. Angelica tea is useful for colic, gas, indigestion, hepatitis, heartburn, nausea, ulcers and various other digestive ailments.

3. Anise Hyssop
Both flowers and leaves have a subtle anise or licorice flavor. Anise is one of the oldest known plants that were grown for both culinary and medicinal use. Anise is associated with the element of air, the God Apollo, the planets Mercury and Jupiter, and the astrological sign Gemini. Anise is also considered masculine.

4. Basil
Blossoms come in a variety of colors, from white to pink to lavender; flavor is similar to the leaves, but milder. The word Basil comes from the Greeks, meaning “King”.  Basil is sacred to Vishnu, Tulasi and Erzulie, masculine in nature, and associated with the element of fire and the planet Mars. Basil helps steady the mind, brings happiness, love, peace, and money and protects against insanity.

5. Calendula / Marigold
A great flower for eating, calendula blossoms are peppery, tangy, and spicy — and their vibrant golden color adds a dash of magick to any dish. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all loved calendula and used it for culinary and healing purposes. During the medieval period it was considered a cure for just about everything.  Marigold is associated with the Sun. Calendula symbolizes love and constancy.  It is great for wedding bouquets and decorations. It is the traditional “he loves me, he loves me not” flower and is useful for love potions. Dried petals can be strewn to consecrate an area or burned in consecration incense. They are also a good addition to dream pillows.

6. Carnations
Petals are sweet, once trimmed away from the base. The blossoms taste like their sweet, perfumed aroma.  In ancient Rome, carnations were known as “Jove’s Flower” as a tribute to their beloved king of the gods, Jupiter.  Carnations are masculine, associated with the Sun and Jupiter, and with the element fire.  Those things that fall under the rule of Jupiter are ideal for use in magickal applications related to luck, money, good fortune, status, legal matters, fertility, friendship, ambition, career, success and protection. The flowers can be used to lend strength in healing applications. The practitioner can also use carnation essential oils to increase health and vigor.

7. Chamomile
Small and daisy like, the flowers have a sweet flavor and are often used in tea. Ragweed sufferers may be allergic to chamomile.  The Romans used Chamomile for incense.  Chamomile was used in ancient Egypt for fevers and was dedicated to their Sun God Ra.  Chamomile is associated with the sun, Leo and the element of water. It helps cleanse and invigorate the throat chakra (5th). It is associated with various Sun Gods, including Cernunnos, Lugh and others.  It is used in spells for money, peace, love, tranquility and purification.

8. Chrysanthemum / Mum
A little bitter, mums come in a rainbow of colors and a range of flavors range from peppery to pungent. Use only the petals. In Celtic folklore, chrysanthemums in the garden were considered a meeting place for the faeries. Chrysanthemum is masculine in nature and resonates with the energy of the Sun and the element of fire.  Chrysanthemum has been used for burial rituals and is a suitable decoration for Samhain and for ancestral altars.  The dried flower heads of chrysanthemum can be burned during house blessings ceremonies.

9. Dandelion
The bright yellow flowers should be gathered as soon as they open. Remove the green bits from the base of the flower before using. These can be added to wines, vinegar or jellies. The name dandelion comes from the French, “dent de lion” which means “tooth of the lion”.  The dandelion is masculine in action and associated with the planet Jupiter, the element of air and both Pisces and Sagittarius. It is also associated with any solar deity, Hecate, Brigid and Belenos.  A tea of the flowers and leaves may be consumed to increase psychic ability, while pouring boiling water over a bowlful of roots will aid in calling spirits.   You can also make a wish and blow the seeds off a dandelion head.

10. Lavender
Sweet, spicy, and perfumed, the flowers are a great addition to both savory and sweet dishes. Some of the earliest recorded uses of lavender are by the Roman soldiers who used the wild-growing plant to perfume their bathwater and wash their clothes. Lavender is masculine in action and associated with Mercury. It is also associated with the element of air and the astrological sign Virgo. It may be used as an asperging herb (to sprinkle water for purification purposes) and dried lavender sticks or wands can be burnt like incense. It is also useful in spells to sharpen the mind, to encourage or strengthen pure love and to encourage fertility. The scent of lavender is relaxing and uplifting all at once making it a great aromatherapy for stressed out or depressed individuals. Try adding some lavender oil to your bath or add it to mild oil for a relaxing massage at the end of a hard day. Stuffing a pillow with lavender buds may help insomniacs relax and fall asleep and soothes headaches.

11.  Oregano
The flowers are a pretty, subtle version of the leaf. Oregano is ruled by Venus and the element of air and associated with Aphrodite. It is used in spells for happiness, tranquility, luck, health, protection and letting go of a loved one. It can also be used in spells to deepen existing love. When worn on the head during sleep, it is said to promote psychic dreams. Oregano symbolizes joy. Use it for rituals celebrating joyful occasions, or in spells to bring joy into one’s life.

12.  Rose
Remove the white, bitter base and the remaining petals have a strongly perfumed flavor perfect for floating in drinks or scattering across desserts, and for a variety of jams. All roses are edible, with flavor more pronounced in darker varieties. From the time of Solomon, the rose has been the flower most closely linked with love. The rose was sacred to Venus, the Roman goddess of love, and was connected to her messenger, Cupid. Roses have been cultivated for over 5,000 years. Roses are associated with Aphrodite, Adonis and Eros. Rosewater is a protective agent worn on clothes. Rose petals can be added to charms against the evil eye.

13.  Rosemary
Flowers taste like a milder version of the herb; nice used as a garnish on dishes that incorporate rosemary. The word Rosmarinus is from the Latin meaning “dew of the sea”.  Rosemary is also associated with Aphrodite and appears in many ancient images of Her. Rosemary was used to ward off evil spirits and nightmares. The wood was used to make musical instruments. Rosemary is male in nature and ruled by Leo, the element fire and the sun (or Moon, depending who you ask).  It’s sacred to Hebe, Aphrodite and the Virgin Mary. Rosemary can be used in spells for fidelity and remembrance as well as to dispel jealousy. Rosemary is useful for ritual baths, and for making sacred herbal water for ritual cleansing, blessing and purification. Bathing in rosemary will enhance your memory.

14. Sage
Blossoms have a subtle flavor similar to the leaves. Sage is a hardy perennial of the mint family.  The Romans regarded sage quite highly and much sacrifice and ceremony was associated with its harvest. They believed it stimulated the brain and memory and used it to clean their teeth. Sage is masculine in nature and associated the element of air and the planet Jupiter. Sage is sacred to the Greek Zeus and Roman Jupiter. It is also a symbol of the Virgin Mary. Sage is used in magical workings for immortality, longevity, wisdom, protection and the granting of wishes. Sage is also believed to help alleviate sorrow of the death of a loved one.

15. Sunflower
Petals can be eaten, and the bud can be steamed like an artichoke. Sunflower is associated with the sun and all solar deities. Its essence helps balance the first chakra and also helps with confidence in leadership roles. Sunflower oil can be used as carrier oil for healing oils used in massages and ointments.

16. Violets
Another famous edible flower, violets are floral, sweet and beautiful as garnishes. Use the flowers in salads and to garnish desserts and drinks. In Roman mythology, violets were said to be lesser goddesses who once dared to rival the beauty of Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty.  Violets are affiliated with the planet Venus or Pluto and are associated with the nymphs of ancient Greek myths.  Violets are also associated with death and rebirth through the story of Attis. Violets are useful in love spells and may be carried as an amulet to increase one’s luck in love. Try combining them with lavender for an enhanced effect.

Beauty. If someone asked you to define it, your mouth would probably go dry and your heart would flutter yearningly, freezing as the words turn heavy in your mind and dissolve in the tip of your tongue.

Beauty is short-lived but ubiquitous, a transparent but shimmering liquid running in rivulets through hidden alleyways and veiled landscapes that the eyes don’t notice unless they look twice. Beauty is found in the unexpected, in the withheld words of the timid poets, in longing stares and authentic, carefree laughs. Beauty is found in what the eyes can see, in what the ears can hear, in the deep reverie of the colorful minds and in the dreams held close to the heart.

Beauty is fleeting and you’re unable to grasp it. All your life you’ve chased it, extended your hands towards it, longed to touch it with your fingertips. But your steps are slow and your hands are ungifted, and you can only imagine what it would be like to create beauty, to have the hands of those that are able to reflect love and joy and pain in books and paintings.

i’m like dropping hints that i’m ladybug – “…I’m Ladybug.” (In which Marinette tries to get Adrien to figure out her secret identity. She was not counting on him being this oblivious.)

If Only It Were That Simple –  Ladybug and Chat Noir have been partners for three long years, growing closer by the day. One night, Adrien argues with Plagg, as he often does, about not being able to tell Ladybug who he is. He just didn’t plan for Ladybug to hear.

Adrinette/Ladynoir. Argh I REMEMBER THIS BEING REALLY CUTE.

Premier Amour  It has always been said that you never move on from your first love.

adrinette/ladynoir. gfdfkjgjdfk this one is really sweet. it’s got a tiny bit of angst, but it’s good angst.

The Fox is Out of the Bag –  “Could uh, could you maybe forget about this?” she asked, eyes flitting around the room as if looking for an escape route.
"The whole transforming in front of me thing?” he said, raising an eyebrow.
-
DJWifi. Lmao this is short and funny.

Those Freckles on Your Butt – It turns out that Adrien has a thing against modesty and Marinette gets a fateful eyeful.
- adrinette. //sobbing// was this fic written for me? b u t  t s //more sobbing//  no but really this is p damn funny :’D

My Boss is a Vampire… Well, sort of – There’s something weird going on with the Agreste couple, and Nathalie is determined to find out. That, or she may just be paranoid for no real reason and is coming up with theories that mean nothing. Who knows.

No Matter How You Spin It – They were bound to find out about each other eventually. It just figured that it would happen at a time where privacy came at a personal cost to both of them. (Or that time that Adrien nearly died twice on his 18th birthday.)
-
ok so this is adrinette, but y’all, chloe legit steals the spotlight anytime she steps into the narrative lmfao. i love her :’D bless this fic. bless this fuckin chloe xD

It Had To Be Her… –  Adrien is used to listening to Chloe’s “secrets”. He’s not used to them changing his life… What he thought would be a simple conversation about his friend’s unrequited celebrity crush turns into one of the most revealing conversations he could have ever imagined.
-
 adrien&chloe. YOOOOOOOO IS ADRIEN AND CHLOE ON THE FRIENDSHIP MY DAMN JAM? IS IT ALSO THE FUCKIN BREAD AND PEANUTBUTTER OF MY SANDWICH? YES IT IS. sorry y’all i just get a lot of feels about platonic chloe/adrien lmfao. this is really cute ;0;

-
 alya/chat [+ lowkey ninette]. holy ambitious premise batman. this is…so good??? and i could see it happening? like legit my fave alyadrien ‘how they hooked up’ set up here, but holy heck this was a rough read. like, i mean, due to the situation and just the charas…i just wanna hug everyone, poor complicated bebs ;0;

Mint Two-Lips –  Marinette thought she would never taste anything sweeter than Adrien’s sweet, minty flavored lips…until she tasted the exact same flavor on Chat Noir’s mouth.
-
adrinette/marichat. sjhdfjkhfjkshdjk SOOOO i don’t usually like kiss reveals cos of the whole unfaithful angle [cheating is an instant turn off for me], B U T!! this one does it right! so i was pleasantly surprised :’D i liked how it worked out in the end too. nice play, anon c:

must be love – What’s a girl to do when she finds out her crush and suitor are one and the same? Ladybug finds out that Adrien is Chat completely by accident, and then proceeds to… have something of a crisis.
- guys it’s ladrien, come on … also   a  ng   s t  //laysonface// like i was dead before i even got out the gate on this one lmao

Just Asking For Some Privacy – “No but she’s right. What the heck could the four of us possibly have to do that’s apparently so important that it needs to be done in private, in an abandoned locker room, and in the middle of an akuma attack?"
- marinette, chloe, adrien, alya. o m f g. this fic lfdjkfsd these kids. what a mess lmao. i love this

Between The Lines   So he found who she is in the most unexpected way… now what?
- Adrinette. “No, that’s the problem.” FUCKIN CACKLIN’. this is p clever and funny xD  i think the writer’s first language isn’t english, so there are a few places that are a bit off, but it’s p easy to read anyway and it’s p fuckin cute, so it’s worth it xD

Tea and Sweets – When you’re sad, sweets get rid of that salty taste on your tongue. But he doesn’t have any sweets.
- Marichat. AGRESTE. FAMILY. ANGST. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS. my jam. hel lo . this was, like the name, incredibly sweet. and made me want tea lol. thANKS

alright that’s it!! i honestly wanted to add a few more than this, cos all the fics are pretty damn good, but i wanted to keep the list as short as i could xD;; [i managed to fail in that anyway, cos i think i recc’d almost exactly half of them…]

but yea, pls also go check out the others in the collection!!  =D/

in the vein of Humans are Weird, imagine the mess hall.

You are often seated with the humans, becauser you have a similar gastro-intestinal system. One day one of your human crewmembers is eating something out of a colorful packet you’ve come to associate with one of earth’s foremost flavors: sweet.

“Human Rhonda,” you say, “I see you have a new candy.”

(candy being the proper term for things like this, or so you’ve been told.)

“Yeah, just got them from my brother on Beta-10- sent them in a care package.” Rhonda says. “He knows I love poprocks.”

“They seem very small,” you say, and Rhonda says, “That’s the point. Do you want to try some?”

Humans often share things- food, equipment, stories. It’s part of their instinctive pack bonding and you’ve learned to deal. “I will try.”

“Cool!” Rhonda pours some candy into your foremost grasper. “Fair warning, they’re gonna feel weird but they’re not deadly I promise.”

“Feel weird?” You ask. Rhonda smiles and says, “Trust me.”

This phrase is 60-40 with humans. Sometimes trusting them is the best idea in the whole universe. Other times it is a serious mistake.

You eat the candy.

As the inside of your mouth begins to fizz like you just swallowed a thray’xl gatewash, you aren’t sure if this is sixty or if this is forty.

Diabolik lovers ‘’5th Anniversary book ‘’ [Subaru’s interview] ~translation|traducción~

Thanks to @madamemalfoy21 and @totallydiabolik for having helped me with the translation

  • 1. Right now, what is your favorite thing?

I like the cushion inside my coffin. I recently put it in, it’s pretty good.
It’s soft enough, now I can sleep better. it’s my favorite thing inside the coffin.

  • 2. What kind of fashion are you into lately?

Black and cool clothes. Since I don’t like flashy colors.
And also… I’m very particular with small accessories.
I think it’s better to wear simple and casual accessories. I don’t like jingling accessories.

  • 3. What habits do you have that you’ll do without realizing?

I lose control when I get angry, and I end up… destroying some wall or something else.
…There are times when I want to destroy things, but there are also times when I do it unconsciously.
… …Does that counts as a habit?

  • 4. How do you spend your days-off?

I stay inside the coffin. It’s not like I’m hiding!
But I don’t have nothing to do… And if I go outside my brothers would involve me in their things, they’re annoying…
So staying inside the coffin is the best!

  • 5. What do you wear to sleep?

I wear casual clothes(loungewear), which I’m used to wearing, but sometimes since I go to sleep I don’t change clothes, you know…?
At least, if I’d undressed I could not sleep well… wait, that doesn’t matter!

  • 6. What do you definitely do before sleeping?

There’s nothing I actually do. When I get sleepy I just sleep.
And when sometimes I can’t sleep … … I just move my body a little, and immediately I got sleep.

  • 7. What part of your body you like the best?

Nothing. I don’t like my hair… neither my eyes. No matter what, each part(of my body) is annoying.
Just… well, I’ve trained my body, so I don’t have a body to be embarrassed to show.
(Subaru TrainEd HIS boDYyyy??????????)

  • 8. What do you like the most of your room?

My coffin. [Subaru loves so much his coffin]
There is nothing that I like to part of that. It is a doctrine not to put unnecessary things.

  • 9. Tell us one memorable impression that you have of your brothers.

To remember something about my brothers…? Hmm, well… what could it be? Impression…
Ahh, when I was young, and I saw that each of my brothers had been brought by their mothers at a dinner party I thought… “I don’t want to get involved with them”

  • 10. What you think of KarlHeinz?

I… don’t understand the old man very well. I just think “what is he thinking”? … …He brought a lot of problems.
I won’t tolerate that he uses me as he wants.
If I say that I don’t hate him… I’d be lying.

  • 11. Where would you go on a date?

H-haa!? A date you say… As if I’d care! I’ll go to the place where she wants to go… no matter where at.

  • 12. What does a girl do to make your heart skip a beat?

What the hell is this question… A expression, huh… Her face when she smiles… for example…?
When I watch her smile, until I end up relaxed… …I don’t want to say this!

  • 13. How does her blood taste?

Sweet… both the smell as the flavor are sweet… when I suck her, each time her blood starts becoming thicker…
And after drinking it gives me an incredible sense of satisfaction.
Sometimes I sucks her by force… But when she obediently accepts my fangs… her blood becomes much more delicious.

  • 14. From which body part do you like to suck her blood?

From her ankle. When I drinks from that place, I can see very well her expression of pain.
It’s more exciting seeing her face while she feels my fangs, than it is dominantly sucking her blood…
Also when I bites her legs she starts to get scared and nervous, it’s pretty good. cough Laito?
[Subaru turns on when see Yui’s face feeling his fangs dksfjsae( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)]

  • 15. What does her existence mean to you?

…I wanna cherish her. It’s an existence[person] indispensable to me…
She’s always to stay by my side, and thanks to her support, I was able to confront myself.
That’s why… I want to protect her. For eternity…

Team Voltron themed drinks!

In light of season 3 releasing soon and planning a viewing party with some of my friends, I recently started thinking about making themed drinks after certain characters and what-not (seeing as I’m the designated bartender of my friend group lol). There’s obviously TONS of different drinks you can make to fit a character, but I took a bit of liberty to fantasize what drinks I’d love to make (had I the time and money); these aren’t arbitrary choices either. I primarily chose drinks that I thought reflected certain character aspects, so I’ve included a small analysis along with each drink choice.

note: for practical reasons (like if ppl actually wanted to make themed drinks) I’ve included both a simplified mixed drink alternative (which, let’s be real, that’s what I’m actually making) AND a non-alcoholic alternative (which are super basic im sorry but it’s the best i could do)

Let’s get mixing!

Shiro – “Boulevardier”

This is one of the few drinks I chose based more on personality than appearance. Most purple cocktails just didn’t quite ring true for Shiro’s full-bodied character, so I went with my gut feeling and started browsing some bourbon based drinks. After going through a few classic recipes, I settled on a Boulevardier. What it contains:

  • 1.5 oz Bourbon
  • ¾ oz Sweet vermouth
  • ¾ oz Campari
  • Orange or cherry as a garnish
  • Served over ice optional

Shiro, as a character, radiates a sense of maturity and warmth. He is kind and caring, but knows when to take charge of his team and push harder. The subtle sweet undertones in bourbon and the warmth of dark liquor, I feel, reflect these aspects of his character very well. Sweet vermouth, like bourbon, has those husky, herbal undertones; it’s basically a wine spiked with brandy and slightly sweetened. Campari is a liqueur made from infused herbs and fruit, a sweet and spicy flavor. This is, in essence, a darker drink, and one that is probably an acquired taste; aka, this is not a beginner or casual drink. It’s a drink I think is well suited to our beloved enigmatic leader, the Head of Voltron, pilot of the Black Lion. It has warmth and depth, a complexity of flavors that matches Shiro’s nuances in character.

Practical party alternative: any type of whiskey and coke (though I still recommend bourbon, it tastes better imo); you can also do a spiced rum and coke if you’re not a whiskey person.

Non-alcoholic alternative: honestly? cherry coke or like…diet coke with lime strike me as very Shiro for some reason lol.
