suzumiya haruhi series

Meta stuff in my The Melancholy of Haurhi Suzumiya? More likely than you think.

Have you ever stopped to think how meta The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya-light novel series really is? Like in some basic stories they have these stereotypical characters like the silent person who reads in the corner, the cute girl with..well you know what and a mysterious transfer student. Being inspired by those, Haruhi actually constructs that kind of narrative around herself, by getting people into her club that fit these models. In these stories there has been a cute moe character, so Haruhi forcibly makes Mikuru join, who fits into this category.

In the murder story she basically goes to a place which happens to fit to all of the stereotypical aspects that happen in a murder story(remote location, mansion, has a maid and a butler and etc..) yet again creating this sort of narrative/story/context. Technically it`s Koizumi who stages the murder mystery, but without Haruhi wishing it that would have never happened.

This goes to even grander scale if we take into consideration the theory which is coined by Koizumi in the beginning of the series, where he tells that the current world was created by Haruhi 3 years ago(currently 4 years ago in their timeline). Like then she literally created the story around her, like holy freaking heck. o_O

Haruhi Suzumiya rant

ITS 7AM but i felt the need to get up and point that the Haruhi Suzumiya series did something very well during the endless 8 saga: they showed us the same scenes over and over. How’s this supposed to be something well done, you ask?

It’s something that may just seem boring and pointless filler for the season, but it’s very important because it doesn’t usually get seen on time loop/time travel animes. We get to see one, two, maybe three failed attempts from the protagonist, and then we’re told “and they suffered a lot more until they got their good ending”. And sure, that’s great but doesn’t actually make you feel all the struggle they went through.

Suzumiya does, instead. After the first episode, when you know that Nagato has lived through this a lot of times already and doesn’t want to disturb it, you’re just left with the very essence of a time loop: the same thing happening over and over and nobody being able to do a damn thing to stop it.

You can feel the emotions Nagato must be feeling to some degree. Boring. Repetitive. Stupid. And that’s exactly what the series wanted you to feel, because that’s exactly what somebody going through a time loop feels like. It’s not supposed to be fun and they won’t be acting the same as the first time. It’s an endless cycle. Add despair to it as well when you saw that Kyon tried to stop the loop, but couldn’t, and you knew you’d be stuck with the same day all over again.

And you can say whatever you want but the series did a A+ job at that. They showed us Nagato’s silent suffering by making us feel the same as her during 8 weeks.

Uniform Crossover!

Anime Reccomendations
Since I watch so much darned anime, and now it’s summer so I’ll have even more time to do so, I’ve decided that my blog would not be complete without a list of some anime I’d like to recommend to you guys, especially if you’re trying to learn Japanese (no you can not learn Japanese through anime alone but it seriously helps a lot at least with the motivation part). Okay so at first I actually started trying to lump these into categories. It sort of worked, but nothing fit exactly into its category and often fit into others as well. For convenience’s sake, I’ll put a few general genres under each title, but I strongly encourage you to give it a few minutes’ chance even if it has a genre you don’t love. I mostly put them in order of personal preference; higher meaning higher preference. But not exactly because they’re all really good and it’s really hard to sort them in general. A lot of them are fairly girly or very comedic, but I hope that I have provided at least some variety.   Princess Jellyfish 11 Episodes Comedy, Slice of Life, Romance Every girl is capable of becoming a beautiful princess. Even the otakus and jellyfish-lovers. Ohmigoodness all I can really do is gush about this anime. I really can’t explain it without it sounding wacko, but it’s really lighthearted and really uplifting. If you ever feel bad about life or society or something, this is like the insta-cure. Also the ending song is the best thing. Watch this anime. Like ASAP. Watch it.   Durarara
25 Episodes Action, Psychological This anime is so charming~ The name of this anime (デゥラララ) is the Japanese onomatopoeia for a vehicle revving its engine. It has a really lovely and magical depiction of its setting in its stylized art and wonderful OST. If you think you understand this anime, think again. There’s gonna be like thirty more plot-twists waiting for you.

Hetalia: Axis Powers/Hetalia World Series 52 Episodes in Axis Powers 120 Episodes in World Series Comedy, Parody, Historical Start with Hetalia: Axis Powers Ooooh my gosh. This is the most addicting series ever because the episodes are only five minutes long. It is a ludicrously hilarious series that will never let history class be the same. Basically, it’s taken all of the major countries (and even some less so), and turned them into (mostly) male anime characters. And it is amazing how much comedy is packed into five minutes, although it can get confusing at times. 100% worth your watch, even if you think it sounds dumb. It will get to youu. You know what, I think I will watch it again. Minor warning that it takes everything in a humorous way, so it is a bit offensive. But it’s so funnnyyy… I’m probably a bad person…   Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita 12 Episodes Comedy, Absurdist, Fantasy, Satire, Parody This anime is absolutely genius. So genius I can’t even. Normally when we think of an apocalyptic world, you’d probably imagine something with explosions or devastation or a slow painful ending, but no matter what it is, you’d probably imagine humanity giving one last dramatic struggle to save itself and the rest of the world. What you might not imagine is humanity simply being replaced by something more fit, and just dying out. Although it is pure comedy most of the way through, it is so clever at times. Ouran High-school Host Club 26 Episodes Comedy, Parody, Reverse Harem, Romance, Gender-bender

Kiss kiss fall in love~ Okay if you haven’t already heard of this idek man you must be living in a shoe. It’s basically your classy I’m enrolled in a school as a guy but I’m really a girl let me go hang out with pretty boys… in a host club. If you haven’t heard of them, host clubs are basically where lonely rich gals with plenty of time go to just be in the presence of attractive guys or vice versa. In real life sometimes the hosts (pretty boys) will do some sketchy stuff for moneys but no sketchy stuffs here okay don’t worry. Basically, this show makes fun of every Korean drama to ever exist.

Clannad/Clannad After Story 22 Episodes in Clannad 22 Episodes in Clannad After Story Drama, Romance, Slice of Life, School Life (Clannad), Tragedy Start with Clannad Ahhhh my gosh so much feels for this anime. Definitely don’t watch this series if you don’t want to cry at least a tiny bit. Unless you ain’t got time for frilly nonsense, because then you might just get really bored. The second series is universally agreed to be better/more feelsy than the first season so if you watch a few episodes and it totally just bores you then you should try skipping to the second season. I personally hate tragedies ‘cause I’m like dude why would you watch something just to make yourself miserable but I love it anyways there I said it.   Hakuouki 12 Episodes in Shinsengumi Kitan 10 Episodes in Hekketsuroku 12 Episodes in Reimeiroku Reverse Harem, Romance(ish), Tragedy, Historical, Action, Samurai Start with Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan This anime is so much feels ohmigoodness. Another one that will probably make you cry unless you’re the kind of person who doesn’t easily get feelsy about TV shows. So much samurai so much drama. Steins;Gate 24 Episodes Science Fiction, Mystery How could I compile a proper list of anime for you without having at least one time-traveling madness anime? Actually there aren’t that many of them but they’re a necessity nonetheless. Pretty much your average “ohmigoodness I can time travel, what does it mean and what are the moral ramifications?” anime; if you could consider that average at all. This anime also started as a game, and it’s evident in the complexity of the plot and ease in creating a multi-dimensional plot-line. If anything, at least it won’t bore you. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
14 or 28 Episodes (yeah, it’s really confusing, and they’re all out of order) Comedy, Parody, Fantasy Definitely something that everyone should watch at least once. This anime pokes fun at basically every other anime, while being something you can watch and enjoy no matter what you’re into. Although I have to put a super huge trigger warning on this one for sexual harassment because of the first two episodes… Tsuritama
12 Episodes Comedy, Adorableness Random freindshipy cuteness featuring a socially anxious boy living with his grandmother, and a self-proclaimed alien with a magical brainwashing squirt gun. I don’t think you could hate this anime; I really don’t. Otome Youkai Zakuro 13 Episodes Supernatural, Romance, Comedy, Action, Historical Random romance cuteness featuring a bad-ass group of girl-spirits and some soldier peoples. It’s pretty cheesy but it’s also pretty darn cute. (Also it has a canon threesome ship which I didn’t think they would let in a show aimed at little kids – yes it’s aimed at little kids but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch it) Sakamichi no Apollon 12 Episodes Coming-of-age, Romance, Music, Historical Some kids form a jazz band. Drama and really beautiful jazz music.   Baka and Test 13 Episodes Comedy, Parody, School Life, Romance, Fantasy What can I say about this anime… Basically this somewhat insane school has turned learning into a giant RPG-game. I wish I went there… sighs… (not really though it seems pretty scary). This is not an anime for kids (looots of pervy stuffs). Lucky Star 24 Episodes Comedy, Parody, School Life, Slice of Life This anime… I don’t even… The first episode starts out with some girls debating the proper way to eat some classic snack foods. At first you’ll probably sit there completely bored, wondering how they made an entire anime series out of this crap, but it will really get to you in all of its dumb cuteness. Angel Beats 13 Episodes Action, Fantasy, Comedy, Drama Where the afterlife for some kids who died before their time turns out to be a battleground where these much too young soldiers fight against God and their frustrations at His will. It is very much feels. You might or might not cry. Baccano! 16 Episodes Fantasy, Action, Comedy, Explosions and Knife-fights Um so I actually came in smack in the middle of this anime… My description of it would probably be something like what what um holy cow explosions haha what. It was good anyways. You should watch it (start at the beginning, though). “Baccano” means ruckus in Italian. I think that is a most apt description. The World God Only Knows 12 Episodes Romance, Parody, Comedy, Harem An expert at dating-sims has to apply his expertise to the real world or it might just self-implode. Shamelessly ridiculous parodies and awkwardness. It’s actually so cute. Psycho-Pass 22 Episodes Dystopia, Science Fiction, Crime Thriller This one really jumped the shark after a while. But while it was good, it was really good. The art is absolutely fantastic, character development is great, etc. etc. Basically, it had everything. (Also I really like dystopias so I’m probably really biased) K-On! 13 Episodes School Life, Slice of Life, Music The main character tries to join a light-music club to play the castanets. Lots of light-hearted cuteness ensues. Fruits Basket 26 Episodes Romance, Reverse Harem, Fantasy, Comedy Ohmygosh so much cuteness. It’s definitely incredibly cheesy, but I’d say it’s worth your watch anyways. All the Chinese zodiac symbols have been turned into humans, even the mysterious 13th zodiac (added by the Japanese), the cat. –best for last–
No. 6 11 Episodes Dystopia, Adventure, Romance, Tragedy Honestly, it’s not the best anime in the whole world of anime but a;lskdfj;lkjgl;kasjdfl;kj feels okay man [translation: in my mind it is]. Also I like dystopias. Sorry that I can’t write an intelligent description of this anime. FEELS. OKAY. Also watch it on Hulu 'cause every single other hosting site decided to put it in some really weird aspect ratio so everyone looks really fat. idek either.

Cries I’m so sorry I planned to make this list short but there are so freaking many amazing shows I had to mention and I didn’t know which you guys would really like… Anyways please watch at least one and give me your opinions/scream your feels at me!! Thanks for reading and I hope this helps!
