supports action

Day of Action: NAMI

Hey Tumblr, in honor of Mental Health Month and Post it Forward (@postitforward), we’re declaring today as a Day of Action to support NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (@namiorg), because we believe that everyone is entitled to mental health care and support.

What’s NAMI?

NAMI is the largest grassroots mental health organization in the US. On behalf of the millions of people who are affected by mental illness every day, NAMI is dedicated to increasing awareness and resources for mental health conditions, combating the social stigma that surrounds mental illness, and advocating for better and equal health care for anyone seeking mental health treatment.

How can I support?

For Tumblr’s Day of Action, we’re encouraging the community to take the NAMI StigmaFree Pledge. By signing the pledge, you’re showing that you wish to fight the stigma that surrounds mental illness and demonstrating your support for all who are affected.

And, if you have the means, you can donate $5 or more to Tumblr’s Crowdrise fundraiser to support NAMI and help build a national network of accessible mental health support and resources for all.

While 1 in 5 people will experience a mental health condition at some point in their lifetime, we’re all likely impacted by mental illness—by friends, family members, or people in our community. Together, we can encourage acceptance, understanding, and support for mental health, and ensure that no one is alone on their mental health journey.

So Trump is in Israel right now playing diplomat and even objectively factual statements from various media sources (such as “Trump touches down in Tel Aviv” or “Goes to Western Wall”) are getting horrifically anti-Semitic comments from both far left and right.

It’s ok if you don’t support Israeli statehood (I personally disagree but it’s ok if you don’t).
It’s ok if you condemn Israel’s treatment of Palestinians (which you absolutely fucking should).

But here are some things to keep in mind about these issues in general:

•Not all Jews are Israeli.
•Not all Israelis are Jews.
•Not all Israelis support the actions of Israel.
•Not all Jews support the actions of Israel.
•The current administration does not speak for all of Judaism or even accurately for all of Israel.
•The current administration of Israel is very controversial even within its party and the more liberal parts of the country are furious and protesting frequently.
•Military service is legally mandated, which forces young people to enforce policies many of them oppose.
•Israel’s awful treatment of Palestinians is a reflection of Netanyahu’s shitty reign and his close circle of conservative, racist, Islamaphobic dickheads. It is not a reflection of Israel’s core values, or the values of its people, or the values of Judaism.

And most importantly:
•Whatever your stance on Israel’s statehood, whatever your stance on Trump, whatever your stance on Netanyahu, ANTI-SEMITISM IS NEVER OK

Los Angeles City Council calls for Trump impeachment investigation

  • In a 10-0 vote Friday, the Los Angeles City Council passed a resolution to “support for any legislative action” investigating possible impeachable offenses committed by President Donald Trump.
  • The resolution is “not about any of his policies that I and many of us here find completely odious,” City Council member Bob Blumenfield, a co-author of the measure, said before the measure passed, according to HuffPost. “This is about conflict of interest.” Read more (5/7/17)
I am a volunteer patient escort at planned parenthood

This is something I just shared on FB about my experiences as a patient escort. Just thought I’d put it on here too.

Alright y'all. Prepare for a long post, but one you should read.

Some of you know, but some of you don’t, that I volunteer at Planned Parenthood about twice a month. My official title is Volunteer Clinic Escort. My role is to safely get patients and family into the clinic safely, with privacy, and with a friendly face. Not all Planned Parenthoods (PP) have these, but the clinic where I volunteer does because we have loud, abrasive, volatile, threatening, verbally abusive and dishonest anti-choice protesters who harass people in the clinic. I would like to tell you about my experiences with them and with patients who talk to me as I stand outside with my umbrella and vest.

(I would like to note that this is not the place to tell me that abortion is wrong, that I should not support PP, that I need to stop what I’m doing. I’ve heard every argument before. In fact, I’ve had every arguement screamed in my face. You’re welcome to your opinion, but I will not be acknowledging it on here, and I ask that others ignore dissenters too. This post isn’t about me and why you think I’m wrong. It’s about what I see every time I volunteer.)

When I am volunteering, I am outside and often have patients and family members talk with me. I’m obviously not there to counsel or to offer advice medically one way or another, but I am a friendly ear and people just need to talk sometimes. Also, when volunteering, patients entering the clinic are verbally harassed by the anti choice protesters almost immediately and, while we don’t encourage it, they often yell back. The protesters don’t listen.

On my very first day, I had a person head into the clinic. As I smiled to her and went to get the door, an anti-choice protester (ACP) yelled “Mama! Don’t kill your baby!” The patient immediately responded tearfully “my baby is dead. My baby is falling out of me right now. I didn’t do anything.” The ACP, without missing a beat, screamed back through her child-sized megaphone “No he isn’t! Your doctor lied to you! These murderers just want your money!” I ushered in the patient as gently as I could while my co-volunteer told her kindly that those people didn’t matter and that in a week they wouldn’t even remember what they heard here.

In the year and a half I’ve been doing this, we have had a ACP sneak into the clinic and threaten to burn the place down. The police did nothing. We had two other ACPs try and enter the clinic to tell patients they would adopt their babies. We told them to get off the property and when they didn’t, we called the police. Eventually the ACP returned to the narrow strip of lawn they stand on at the edge of the parking lot, and luckily so, because the police never showed again.

My clinic, luckily, has never faced extreme violence while I was there. But other PP and health care clinics are not so lucky. They are burned down, have bombs planted, have clinic escorts and workers physically harmed.

They are shot at and three people die.

I have had patients tell me that they will be killed by their partner if they have an abortion. I have been told that their partner will kill them if they DON’T have one. I’ve been told how people with physical disabilities cannot carry a child without side effects so severe they may not survive. I’ve had patients explain that their mental health is at risk if they go through with the pregnancy. I’ve had patients come in with a wanted pregnancy that ended in miscarriage and they needed PPs help to safely remove the tissue. I’ve seen people come in who admit to being addicted to drugs and know they cannot go through this pregnancy.

Planned Parenthood helped all these people, not just with medical care, but with helping abused patients find help to escape violent partners. Helping those who want to conceive find fertility doctors. Helping drug addicts find resources to become healthy.

All the while, the ACP stand outside, screaming and hollering, telling women that they are murderers and whores and that they will burn for murdering their babies. But it’s ok, they do it out of love. They scream at these people and tell them awful things and then beg to have the patient come talk with them.

They don’t see the hypocrisy.

It is a rule to not engage with the ACP at all. In the year and a half I’ve been doing this, I’ve said maybe a total of 50 words to the group, all of which are some form of “you are on our property, step back right now.” I may not engage them, but we can make eye contact and make them believe we are listening. We do this so the ACP begins shouting at me, and not a patient getting air outside. I would much rather be shouted at than have them scream at a patient.

When I am being yelled at, I have been called: a murderer, a nazi, a slavery supporter, a bad mother, a bad wife (they do not know if I am married or if I have children), a witch, a lesbian, a liberal, a member of satan’s army, a Muslim lover, a bitch, a slut, and evil. Some of these things are true and some are perfectly fine things to be, but to the ACP they are all bad.

Sometimes we have patient partners come talk to the protesters. They try and explain to the ACP why they are there with their partner. I’ve heard them tell the ACP every single reason, and every single time, the protesters still tell them they are wrong and a bad father and a supporter of Satan. Every. Time. And they call this love.

Since Trump took office, one of his first orders signed was a Global Gag Rule. People thought that this rule meant that no US money would go to pay for abortions overseas, but in fact, US funds have never paid for abortions and haven’t since 1973. Even in the US, because of the Hyde Amendment, no federal funding goes to pay for abortions.

What this gag rule now does, however, is prevent money from going to clinics that even mention abortion as a method of family planning. They don’t have to perform them. If they are mentioned at all in pamphlets or classes, they lose foreign aid money. This means that now they can’t provide birth control, wellness checks, prenatal care, or classes.

This will cause unwanted pregnancies. This will cause people to seek out abortions, often in unsafe condition.

This will cause people to die.

Roughly 1/3 people with a uterus will have an abortion in their life. I haven’t spoken to everyone who has had one, but I’ve spoken to more than most. No one gets an abortion out of malice. No one gets an abortion just to end the life of a fetus, just for kicks. No. One.

Planned Parenthood provides important health services, including abortion. They do this despite the risk of physical bodily harm, every day. People like myself stand outside PP to protect patients because it is important.

We. Will. Not. Stand. Down.

I will continue to volunteer, even though since Trump was elected, the ACP have gotten more and more aggressive in their tactics, since they believe Trump supports their actions. I will continue to walk these patients inside, to get help, because it is important and right. I will continue to fight Trump the slew of anti choice people supporting him. I will continue to support choice even though I know I will lose friends and will face hatred from people I know.

Planned Parenthood is important, and we will not stand down.

straight ppl things:

  • outright, obvious discomfort
  • assuming your s/o is your best friend. just love holding hands and kissing them. “you two are such good friends! i want a friend like that”
  • assuming coming out is a one time thing where you invite everyone you have ever came into contact w/ + will ever come into contact w/ to a party and get on a stage and announce “hey! i’m gay” and everyone claps and that’s that
  • weird invasive questions about your personal experiences
  • “maybe someday you’ll realize that this was just a phase and you’re just kidding yourself! we all go through phases”
  • “haha so did you ever have a crush on me/don’t get a crush on me or anything… jk”
  • “i love you even though i don’t support your actions and you’re inevitably going to hell (:”
  • “you’re so brave for-”
  • “so how does your family feel about-”
  • treating you talking about the shit they do (even if you say it lightheartedly/in passing) as if you went directly into their home and broke all of their dishes, individually, one plate at a time, as they stood there and had to watch

On a personal level, being misogynist, ableist, homophobic, etc. is not just about feeling hatred for marginalised groups. Hatred is a symptom, and not everyone has that symptom. Sometimes it’s pity. Or creepy dehumanising fascination. Or indifference. Or ignorance and a self-absorbed refusal to learn to be better.

But it’s not about your feelings at all - it’s about actions and whether your actions support an oppressive system.

That’s why you can’t say, “I’m not misogynist! I love women!” and have people go, “well, you know your feelings best!” It’s not about your feelings. It’s about what you’re doing and if it’s harmful. And you do not get to decide if you’re harming others.

div-op  asked:

Why "fuck her silence"? Maybe Louis wanted her to stay quiet on this whole thing?? Why does everybody in this fandom ruthlessly belittle this girl based on her public persona? If Louis is so great and you claim to love him so much, shouldn't you be supportive of his decisions??

Because Eleanor got a choice and Louis didn’t.

Because she got the luxury of being able to leave, of not being arrested, of not having her name dragged through the mud in the press (falsely, I might add).

Because the articles about her in this shit show are positive, career summaries and recaps of her time as his brave girlfriend while the Louis alternative has been to paint to him as a violent, uncontrollable asshole who punches people in the face at will.

Because she signed up for this again.

Because she doesn’t give a fuck about Louis beyond how his name can help her further her sad “fashion” career.

Because she’s never stood up for him in any way whatsoever, and has, in fact, disparaged him to several people I know.

I support Louis’ actions trying to help a woman who has largely done nothing to help him in 6 long years. I support his bravery and compassion in that moment.

But he didn’t choose this closet - the first or second version of it, and I don’t have to do shit to support that or her existence in it.

stonecoldkidding  asked:

Hi! I love animals, so I've gone vegan and started studying biology/animal psych in my free time. I wanna go to museums and other places that have educational stuff like skeletons, but my politics make me wonder if the stuff if ethical (1/2)

Was the animal killed or kept in confinement/an unnatural environment? Etc. Do you ever have this problem? And even if you don’t, do you have any ideas on how to get around it? Thank you very much!

There is literally no way to get around the fact that most animals in museum collections were either captive specimens while they were alive or collected through hunting. It’s simply not practical to pick up things that are already dead and attempt to turn them into museum quality specimens - roadkill or things that are already rotting have damage, and you can’t accurately study them.

Here’s how I would encourage thinking about it: you’re not perpetuating any further death through your patronage of facilities with animal-based collections. With the advancement of technology, the scientific world has almost entirely moved on from needing to kill things in order to study them.*

The animals in the collection are already dead, but they’re effectively ambassadors for the protection of their brethren because they’re part of the collection. Their death has allowed scientists to study them in order to protect and conserve the ones still living, has let them touch the minds of of visitors and spark their passion, has given us a way to still value and remember the species we’ve driven into extinction. There’s a very solid truth to the educational mantra that people will often only care about the things they have personal experience with. The animals in these collections are vital for that, and I think it’s much more important to honor them by supporting the good they can still do for every other living member of their species than to boycott educational facilities due to choices that were made decades, if not centuries before now. Even if those specimens were held captive for pride or killed for a trophy, they are valuable and vital for scientific advancement and education.

You can’t change how they died - but you can choose, with your actions, to support what that sacrifice means now.

*Some facilities will still do collection trips, and no institution will turn down access to the body of a rare animal in order to study it in ways that are impossible while they were alive. However, these projects are often grant- or school-funded, and it is highly unlikely that your presence and admission fee or lack therof will effect the continuation of these practices in any significant way.

Character Analysis: Shiro

[ Lance ] [ Hunk ] [ Pidge ] [ Keith ] [ Allura ] [ Coran ]

Just for entertaining meta-ish purposes I’m going to do these in the order that the characters are introduced in the show. So that means we’re starting off with Fearless Space Leader.

seeing all this love for lars come up after the most recent stevenbomb is making my heart go :D

The Supergirl fandom (and by that I mean the Kara/Mon-el fandom) needs to stop saying Kara and Manuel are not white, that they are white-passing because they are aliens. THEY ARE WHITE. They are not white-passing and for white fans like me to be discussing that they are is truly offensive.

I get it, fandom, you are feeling “pressed” because people are RIGHTFULLY accusing your shitty ship of only existing through racist network decisions to erase Kara’s romance with James and to kick James out of the main storyline. You also realize that your ship taps into a few misogynistic tropes in that it’s the woman doing all the emotional labor to make the man a better person - as opposed to Karolsen, where they both supported each other and said how much they admired each other since the beginning. It’s hard to defend your shitty ship from these legit concerns. But co-opting social justice language to make your (extremely racist) point and pretend your white ship is “actually, really, interracial, if you think about it” is only making things worse. You wonder why everybody hates you? This is why everybody hates you.

PS. For the love of god stop saying Kara and Manuel are not white.

EDIT: I’d appreciate if S/upercorp fandom stopped reblogging this. I do not support the actions and often problematic opinions i’ve seen in a lot of people in this fandom and I’m not comfortable having this post connected to that side of fandom. My criticism didn’t come from a shipping stance (if anything I’m Karolsen) but a troubling comment I saw in fandom, I don’t want to see my words used as a weapon for a fandom I don’t support and that honestly I want to have nothing to do with.

Regarding Herizen Guardiola and the Get Down
  • Herizen Guardiola is a predator, there is NO excusing her behavior and actions. Period, point, blank.
  • This is not pedophilia. Pedophilia is specifically in regards towards prepubescent  children and at 16 the victim is not a child.  The term you are looking for is Ephebophilia.
  • Do not feel guilty if you still enjoy and care about the character of Mylene Cruz. Do not feel guilty if you now have conflicting feelings about the character or if you’ve decided you can no longer support the character.
  • Guardiola’s actions as of now DO NOT represent the morals of it’s creators. No ramification have been taken into place and we do NOT know how they will carry out this information. (Also I don’t see any of you boycotting Disney or David Yates for hiring Johnny Depp a known abuser)
  • Guardiola’s actions DO NOT represent the morals and story line of The Get Down. She is not her character or the story. You can separate (and have done it for years with your white faves: Casey Affleck, Mel gibson, Emma Roberts, Woody Allen) an artist from their work. Her actions should not suddenly be reason to not watch The Get Down nor to petition to get it canceled.

Riot, Protest, Start Shit.

We’ve tried peaceful protests and nobody listens. Every liberal peaceful protest is met with a flood of people calling us whiners and mocking us. If they won’t listen to peaceful protests the only option is militancy. Make it so that they have no other option but to address our concerns, they have ignored us too long.

I support the actions taken by the citizens of Berkeley to stand up for what they believe in.

you: “Omg JD fans are disgusting!!! All I see are people excusing a monster!! Stop romanticizing him and their toxic relationship!!!!!! Nazis!!!”

me, an intellectual: “JD is super shitty and his relationship with Veronica isn’t healthy, very obviously, however I as a human being can separate fiction from reality and understand that enjoying a character does not mean you support their actions or encourage real life examples of such things. JD is a well written and interesting character whose mental illness and childhood explains but does not excuse the way he acts within the movie. The writers do an excellent job of portraying someone who keeps their emotions under wraps, while still having emotions there if the viewer searches. Heathers is a great movie with great characters, none of whom are inherently good or should be praised, however as consumers enjoying a fictional piece of media it is not our job to find the good in and idolize every character that is presented to us, simply enjoy them, or learn from them.”

Thirty Questions About Your Decisions

It’s been a month since the game has launched, and anyone who has finished playing has probably been itching to talk about it.  I know I have!  So let’s get into the real nitty gritty of the choices we made.  Drop a few numbers in my ask box, and reblog so your followers can ask you! 4. When your comatose sibling asked about the current situation in Andromeda, did Ryder lie or tell the truth about Alec Ryder and Habitat 7? Why?
5. Romantic entanglements, if any, and hopes for a future with your partner?
