Jump Up, Super Star! Lyrics Explained and Exposed!

Hello Mario fans! With the impending release of Super Mario Odyssey this Friday I wanted to take some time to explain all the hidden Mario references in the pivotal song Jump Up, Super Star! Let’s comb through parts of the lyrics and see what we can find together!

Here we go, off the rails
Don’t you know it’s time to raise our sails?
It’s freedom like you never knew

Time? That’s an easy one! This is quite clearly a reference to Mario’s Time Machine.

Oh, we can zoom all the way to the moon
From this great wide wacky world
Jump with me, grab coins with me
Oh yeah!

They thought they could sneak this one past us but nope! This is definitely a reference to the cancelled phillips CD-i game Super Mario’s Wacky Worlds. Wow! That’s how you know Nintendo is going through their library!

Spin the wheel, take a chance
Every journey starts a new romance
A new world’s calling out to you

You? Well now this one might be hard to spot at first but its pretty easy when we break it down. We have to remember that Pauline is the one singing this song. And who is she singing the song to? Mario. So what word is missing from this sentence? That’s right! Mario is Missing. Very clever!

Take it in stride as you move, side to side
They’re just different points of view

Moving from side to side? Doesn’t that sound familiar? It should! This is very clearly a reference to Nintendo’s FIRST go around with putting lyrics to a Mario song “Do the Mario” when Captain Mario “Lou” Albano told kids everywhere to “swing your arms from side to side”.

Jump with me, grab coins with me
Oh yeah!

Come on and jump up in the air (Jump up in the air)
Jump without a care (Jump without a care)
Jump up ‘cause you know that I’ll be there

This one might be hard to spot! I wasn’t able to highlight this one. Can you figure out the reference? Pauline is a talented singer but even she needs to take a break to breathe in between the lyrics. Hey taking a break? Don’t I know this one? Oh yeah! That’s a reference to pausing which is featured in every single Super Mario game! What a head scratcher that one is!

Put a smile on that face
There’s no time to waste
Oh, let’s do the odyssey!

This one was also hard to spot but after some time I figured it out! Pauline had to read the lyrics from somewhere right? And in this modern age of 2017, I’m sure someone at New Donk City composed the lyrics on a word processor on their computer. So how did they do it? That’s right, by typing it! A subtle nod to Mario Teaches Typing! Only the best could figure that one out.

That about wraps things up there. As you can see, Mario Odyssey does a great job referencing the long and storied history of Mario’s games. It truly does put a smile on my face.

Please enjoy Super Mario Odyssey when it hits stores this Friday!
