ARTIST’S NOTE: My entry for Round Three of the @playchoices giveaway. It took a few weeks, but I finally managed to finish that work-in-progress I had! Added in a few more characters and chains that symbolize how their destinies are connected in one way or the other.

Long drives

These summer nights, the cool breeze flows, the stars shining
Look at the moon, her glow illuminating our way, guiding
Long drives to no where, getting lost on the way
Our song playing on the radio, clouds turning a darker shade of gray
Is it gonna rain, we wonder, the lightening strikes
On the road, we have our car, we see people passing us in bikes
This right here is probably ecstasy, I’m thinking
There is calm and quiet, hopefully our hearts linking.

We’re caught within this loop of ‘forever’s and ‘never’s
alternating between the soft touch of fingertips and the beating of fists
We’re summer and winter
a riot against ourselves
I taste magic like poison on your lips when our teeth collide
and reality like the antidote when we melt into each other.
We’re the sand and the snow
We freeze and we thaw.
We’re so caught within this loop of paradoxes that we shouldn’t be within that we don’t realise when we turn into ice so rapidly
every inch of me that you touch, cracks.
And I spill over you like blood on snow
like fresh bruises on supple skin.
and you scatter every piece of me in your arms
like I’m the sun drowning in your horizon.

If he truly loves you, he will love you when you are an ocean breeze, but also when you are a summer storm. You were not made to be loved in parts, you were meant to be loved as a whole.

I think America must see that riots do not develop out of thin air.

Certain conditions continue to exist in our society which must be condemned as vigorously as we condemn riots.

But in the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard.

And what is it that America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the Negro poor has worsened over the last few years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice, equality, and humanity.

And so in a real sense our nation’s summers of riots are caused by our nation’s winters of delay. And as long as America postpones justice, we stand in the position of having these recurrences of violence and riots over and over again.
