sugar and arsenic

I was wondering if you have any random thoughts on Nepeta? She's easily my favorite character, and I like the stuff you've said about her so far, but it'd be cool to hear more. If you've got anything on The Disciple or Meulin that'd be awesome too, but that's probably unlikely. At any rate, really like how you see Homestuck, I probably shouldn't have gone through your entire blog in one day though, I'll probably need to reread some things later

@hellobeau had a post about sugar in Homestuck (x), talking about how sugary sodas are depicted as troll alcohol, how the alpha kids are hungover after interacting with the lollipop juju, and other things.

One thing not mentioned was Nepeta’s planet, which is completely covered in gigantic mounds of sugar cubes… and it confuses me. Because I don’t recall anything indicating Nepeta having an addiction narrative. Caliborn refers to her as “saccharine” (sugary/sweet) as a reference to her disposition (8772), so the connection to sugar is marked as somewhat relevant… but to what end, I really don’t know.

Is sugar the arsenic catnip? Something that gives immediate pleasure, instant gratification, but leads to a crash? The juju was compared to a star in Mario, something that circumvents challenges to true accomplishment… the idea of the lollipop being a shortcut to growing up is emphasized by a lollipop’s visual similarity to planets with completed houses.

There’s also the idea that the sugar cubes and tea make LOLCAT a tea party, and within Jane’s Alice in Wonderland framing, the Trickster Arc could be construed as a Mad Tea Party? So there’s another channel of reinforcement, but that still doesn’t tell me what it means about Nepeta…

Planets in SBURB seek to make their players afraid, so is Nepeta afraid of sugar and the narratives that come with it? Or does her username suggest she identifies with sugar? These are questions I don’t have good answers to.

“I ate it all; plastic, diamonds and sugar-coated arsenic as we danced in honey and sea-salt sprinkled laxative. Coral blossomed portraits in Rembrandt light; cheekbones high and fashionable. Snap! goes the moment; a photograph is time travel, like the light of dead stars painting us with their warm, titanic blood. Parasitic kaleidoscopes and psychotropic glow worms stop me dead in my tracks. Aphids sucking the red off a rose, but for beauty I will gladly feed my life into the mouths of rainbows; their technicolor teeth cutting prisms and smiling benevolently on the pallid hue of the working class hero.”

In my history of graphic design class we created art nouveau posters! For this project we had to make advertisements while incorporating this style.
I chose to make an ad for Carl Akeley’s exhibits. Carl Akeley is well known taxidermist and conservationist. You can see his work today at the Chicago Field Museum!  In my poster I illustrated Carl Akeley’s fighting elephants. He and his wife Delia were sent on an expedition to Africa to retrieve some specimens for the Field Museum. On the expedition Delia was responsible for taking down the bigger bull elephant while Carl had been trampled and shot down his (smaller bull elephant) in self defense.Although these weren’t the first elephants that Carl had stuffed.

P.T. Barnum’s jumbo died in a freak train accident and Carl was called to the scene to stuff the elephant. Jumbo was THE FIRST ELEPHANT to ever be stuffed.

And here at the bottom of the poster I illustrated Carl Akeley’s “Four Seasons”. During the time, white tailed deer were considered endangered. Carl wanted to be able to educate the public on these animals even if they were to go extinct. But obviously today the deer are far from endangered.

So Carl collected a total of 16 deer during each of the four seasons. For each season he made sure to collect a buck, a doe and fawns. (I didn’t have enough room to illustrate all of the deer in each section.) He did a phenomenal job at capturing every little detail of how the deer might have looked when moving to the veins and position of the ears.

As for the foliage Delia and Carl MADE every single leaf, tree and shrub in sight of each diorama. They made the foliage by making wax and metal molds, and then painted everything. The snow was created using powdered sugar (with a pinch of arsenic to keep the bugs from eating the sugar.)

"I know a couple of bad black people who have done awful things, so I hate all black people," sounds pretty awful/racist right? Replace "black people" with "men", and you have the basic new age feminist ideology. I'm sure you wouldn't agree with the first statement, so please explain how you can justify it for men?

replace “add 2 cups of sugar” in a cake recipe with “add 2 cups of arsenic” - sounds pretty awful right? replace “sugar” with “arsenic” and you have the basic new age murder ideology, checkmate bakers!!1!

it’s almost as if replacing one thing with another thing without taking in basic sociological concepts of institutional power structures and privilege changes the dynamic of relationships, or something!

and making generalizations about privileged people who have abused you is not the same as making generalizations about minorities that can literally get them killed! what a concept!
