Suffrage Sunday

“Because we refuse to marginalize women in society in all roles that comply with sharia, we have decided, after deliberation with our senior clerics and others… to involve women in the Shura Council as members, starting from next term,” King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia said.

“Women will be able to run as candidates in the municipal election and will even have a right to vote.”

While this is decidedly something to celebrate, let us keep in mind that this right will be restricted to local elections only. We must keep supporting the women in Saudi Arabia until they are granted full suffrage and ability to run in national races, as well as other basic rights that are restricted in the kingdom (like obtaining a driver’s license).
