flirting in french; god, how i would love to be smooth in any language. i’d like to think this is pretty important - as this is part of socializing in any language. flirtation is a very different thing than “picking up.” picking up is a kind of hunting game with a very pointed and invariable goal. flirtation, at least in france, is a totally different thing. it’s a different culture, a different lifestyle. it’s a way of being in everyday life, and unlike picking up, it has no defined goal. sometimes the french flirt because it’s just delightful to do so. think salt to pepper relationship. allowing each one to check, and at different levels, if he or she still has some charm operating.

i would say that simple is always best: merely walk up to your chosen girl or guy and say je vous trouve absolument charmante, or i find you absolutely charming / beautiful. be classy and to the point. with that and mind, read on!

so; why flirt in french?

  • well, french is a sexy language. not going to lie.
  • it’s the planet’s most-hyped language of love.
  • reaching that level of fluency feels amazing.
  • it gives you that confidence. social confidence.
  • helps to develop communication skills.

french learning and french flirting

  • let’s face it: in france, (or in any country for that matter), nobody speaks like a textbook, the president, or a language learning site (i’m looking at you, duolingo). it’s great for memorizing the fundamentals, but lacks that extra step that stands between you and complete fluency.
  • flirting is part of socializing - and linguistically (i don’t know, it helped with me) it improves retention. it’s also just interesting to learn!
  • flirting is just well.. fun. even if it doesn’t go anywhere.
  • a bit of verbal charm isn’t always necessary : but in my opinion, it helps you sound more natural / at ease / friendly.
  • i somewhat lack verbal charm (i’m very, very awkward in social situations) so i probably need this masterpost as much as anyone else (:

the classics: make love last.
this is based upon what i’ve heard at school / restaurants / bars.
okay fine: it’s based on the movies i’ve watched too.

  • j’ai envie de t’embrasser / embrasse-moi - kiss me.. annouce it - make your intentions known! i’d like to kiss you’ - okay, you could just kiss someone instead of letting them know. but i don’t know.. there’s something romantic about it? best with a longing, meaningful stare.
  • je t’aime: i’m pretty sure we all know this one. best with someone you care deeply for, i wouldn’t say this on a first date - but if you’re the direct type : this can help you get from a to z pretty quickly.

the simple compliments
using these with a flirty look / tone of voice  can do wonders. play with your expression while practicing these: it makes a difference, trust me. t’es toujours canon toi ou quoi?

you can also add trop ( = too). example: trop belle, trop mignon(ne).
you can also add tellement ( = so) example: t’es tellement belle!
you can also add si ( = so) example: t’es si mignonne.
you can also use grave ( = totally) example: t’es grave belle.

  • t’es mignon(ne).
  • t’es belle (/beau), toi.
  • t’es canon. ( = you’re smoking hot).
  • t’es con. ( = you’re an idiot) - i’ve seen this used a lot flirtatiously.
  • t’es drôle. ( = you’re funny)
  • t’es magnifique.
  • t’es charmant(e).
  • t'es coquin / coquine! ( = you’re such a tease.)

the ‘social and the flirty’
these can be used as compliments / or flirtatiously. depends on your relationship with the person you’re giving them to.

  • cette beauté chaton, tu m’ éblouie. ( = you dazzle me with your beauty.)
  • une beauté divine. ( = a divine beauty or: you’re so divine.)
  • ouloulouloulouloulou. ( = you really have to hear this one.)
  • tu brilles de mille feux.
  • j'te pécho. ( = like the equivalent of ‘to pick up someone’ in english).
  • bg, or beau / belle gosse ( = hot guy, hot girl).
  • une petite merveille. ( = a wonder, someone to be marveled at).
  • une bombe. ( = bombshell, someone pretty - same thing as ‘belle gosse’.)
  • le petit côté mystérieux femme fatale je kiffe. - je kiffe means i like.
  • la beauté à l état pur ( = beauty at its purest form).
  • dingue! ( = crazy, as in crazy beautiful).
  • j'ai pas les mots.( = i have no words).
  • wahhh, la classe! ( = classy!)
  • c’est fou, tant de beauté ( = you’re so beautiful, it’s crazy.)

flirting at a bar or restaurant?

  • t’as d’beaux yeux, tu sais? the phrase ‘you’ve got beautiful eyes’ pretty much works in any language (though, i think it sounds extra gorgeous in french). the phrase actually comes from a french film called le quai des brumes. fair warning: this is an extreme cliché, : it’s basically the english equivalent of do you come here often? it can be said ironically, if you’re not the cliché type.
  • je peux t’offrir / vous (formal) un verre ? : can i buy you a drink?
  • vous êtes célibataire ? mais comment est-ce possible ? - you’re single? but how’s that possible?
  • vous venez souvent ici ? - do you come here often? classic.  a phrase that transcends cultural barriers: “ the sentence could be followed up by complaints — about the bartender, about the clients or about how the bar isn’t as good as it used to be. a french tradition is râler, a sort of complaining. finding things to complain about is a way that many french people choose to bond with new acquaintances. this is not true of anyone.
  • t’as une miette (you’ve got a crumb) as you pretend to stroke something off of someone’s face, first with your fingers, then with your lips.
  • tu m’excites ! ( = you turn me on.)
  • “j’ai une première édition de ‘à la recherche du temps perdu.’ tu veux le voir ?” -  i have the first edition of “in search of lost time. (written by proust). do you want to see it?” in france (for me, at least) cultural knowledge is sexy. in America, we often ask if you’d like a nightcap. choose something cultural and intellectual in france, and you’re far more likely to get a oui.
  • je veux te revoir. ( = i want to see you again.)
  • quoi de beau? ( = how you doin’ - joey, friends.)
  • excuse-moi. est-ce que t’embrasses les inconnus ? non ? donc, je me présente. excuse me, do you kiss strangers? No? then let me introduce myself.
  • excuse-moi, j'ai perdu mon numero de téléphone. est-ce que je peux t'emprunter le tien?“ excuse me, i seem to have lost my phone number. could I borrow yours?

let me know if you’d like to know more! you can never be too charming.

ALRIGHT ONCE AGAIN let’s talk about the difference between the sexualization in other movies and Lois Lane’s bathtub scene in batman v superman. Lots of people have done this already and I thank you all for that. But some people are still not getting it.

For those of you who have seen Iron Man 2, you know very well there is a scene where Black Widow strips down in the back of Happy’s car. Note that Natasha makes it very clear that she does not want to be watched or seen when she does this, but you have Happy spying on her anyway against her wishes, thus objectifying her. She clearly didn’t want him to look and he did anyway, and there is the further perverse impression that the viewer is spying on her body in the same way that Happy is.  Or how about in Star Trek: Into Darkness, when Dr. Carol Marcus tells Kirk to turn around while she changes? Then, of course, he doesn’t listen and he turns around anyway, thus causing her to demand that he turn around again. Once again, this is a woman being objectified for her body – the character explicitly asks not to be viewed in a such a way, and yet she is anyway. Like with Natasha, her wishes as a person – a human being – are directly ignored. Arguments can even be made that they needed to change for whatever reason, because hey – women have a right to change clothes as they please.

A scene is not automatically sexualizing because a woman is naked, or has consensual sex. Women have a right to be/do those things if they choose. But in both of these examples, you have the women’s bodies portrayed as more important than their characters/personalities/wants/needs. That is sexualization, without a doubt.

Now let’s look at the bathtub scene. You have Lois Lane, understandably taking a bath because she had a traumatic and confusing/mysterious experience that she wants to piece together (lots of people use bathing/shower times to think. No, she is not clothed because obviously people generally don’t wear clothes in the bath. But it is still noticeable that the camera is almost entirely focused on her face the whole time. The amount of skin that is shown is really quite minimal (though skin is never the issue – it’s the way the skin is depicted).

Nonetheless, when Clark enters the room, a big factor is that he is making DIRECT EYE CONTACT with her the whole time. He is looking at her, not at her body. This helps establish that he values her for more than her body. In fact, what does he come in to do? He enters to simply inform her that he is cooking dinner and making other gestures to suggest that he cares for her. Further, it is Lois that continues the conversation, indicating that she wants him to stay there with her (which is quite the opposite of what happened in the other two movies I mentioned, in which the women demanded that the men look away or leave).

In this scene, Lois and Clark have a legitimate, necessary discussion that moves the plot along and lays out Lois’s motivations as a CHARACTER quite clearly. You learn that she is suspicious of what happened, and that she has a thirst for knowledge. You learn that she cares deeply about Clark and the world’s reactions to him. This scene serves as character development for her (something that many female characters are unfairly denied). She exists in this scene as more than just an attractive body – she is a breathing, thinking person.

At no point does Lois suggest that she does not want Clark there. When he tentatively makes physical contact with her, she grabs onto him. And when he climbs into the bathtub to disprove her concerns that “he can’t love her and still be him,” he pauses to see if she is okay with it. And it is clear as day that she is – she smiles, laughs, and leans backwards to make room for him.  Is it sexualization if two consenting adults in love engage in this sort of behavior? No. That’s pretty much human nature.

And why a bathtub scene, many of you ask? I’m sure many of you think it was unnecessary and pointedly included to sexualize Lois. But this scene is straight up foreshadowing. Lois essentially asks Clark if he can  be Superman and love her at the same time. He responds in a silly though meaningful way by jumping fully clothed into the bathtub so that he can kiss her. This implies that he would do anything for her.

And what happens later in the movie? Oh yeah. He jumps into the water to save her from drowning, meanwhile abandoning the fight against Doomsday. He stops being Superman and becomes a mere man in love…for her. And then to further prove this foreshadowed point, he implies that he is going to sacrifice himself for Lois in particular.

And last but not least, it is meant to disprove the idea that Lois and Clark’s biological differences stand in the way of this sort of thing. We learn quickly that they don’t, and that they’re in love, and that they’d do anything for each other. Case closed. Characters developed. Relationship established. Sexualization not achieved.

- I’m chokin back tears rn becaUSE I MISS THIS BOY SOSOSOO DAMN MUCH

- I JUST HOPE HE’S HAPPY AND HEALTHY

- BUT I ALSO WANT HIM BACK ):

- ALright I’m calm now….. shall we begin?

- So you and Jaemin are best friends

- Have been for as long as you can remember

- There’s even pictures of the two of you as babies

- Butt naked

- Anywho!!

- You guys went through the best friend stage

- Then you hit a lil rough patch when you got to the “”cooties”” stage

- But once that passed, you two were inseparable again

- Everyone always assumed you two were dating

- And when you would correct them, they still didn’t believe you

- It was just another movie night at Jaemin’s

- The usual messy pillow fort filled with stuffed animals, buckets of popcorn and your favorite snacks was thrown together in the middle of Jaemin’s bedroom

- The movie was playing but neither of you were watching

- You guys talked and talked while one of you occasionally tried to throw a piece of popcorn into the others’s mouth

- And then, like usual, Jaemin starts to tease you about one thing or another

- So you (jokingly) get defensive with him

- Before you knew it, the two of you were in the middle of a profound battle to the death

- And by that you mean play wrestling

- By the time the rolling around came to a halt, Jaemin had you pinned underneath his lean frame

- Both of you were breathing incredibly hard

- When suddenly, Jaemin’s hand slowly inched towards your head

- Brushing away the disheveled hair from your face

- The two of you stared into each others eyes for what felt like an eternity

- Not uttering a single word

- And then BAM!

- He confesses

- Failing to hide the smile on his face when he asks you out

- finally

- And of course you agree

- Because who could turn down such a boy ????

- Anyways,,, enough yappin

- Onto the actual dating !!!

- Can somebody say  c l i n g y

- V V greasy !!

- “Are you a camera? Because every time I look at you, I smile”

- “Jaemin, you smile at everything?”

- “Oh shit, you’re right…”

- Alwaayysss cheesin

- But I mean who’s complaining

- That boy has a god given smile

- This kid is surprisingly  b o l d

- So y’all are sittin on the couch watching a movie or somethin

- It’s pretty chill

- Until this lil shit fake yawns and stretches his arm around you

- Yea,, you know the move

- “Jaemin…”

- “Yes, cutie?”

- *sigh* “nothin…”

- Or let’s say you’re reading a book

- And suddenly Jaemin comes out of nowhere

- Laying his head on your lap

- Cuddling up to your body

- “Nana, whatcha doin?”

- “Nothin,, I’m jus-”

- Followed by incoherent mumbling as he shoves his face farther into your lap

- He absolutely adores kisses !!!!!

- Cheek kisses !!!!!

- Nose kisses !!!!!

- Surprise kisses !!!!!!

- ESPECIALLY long, meaningful kisses !!!!!!!!!!!!!

- He likes droppin bombs on you, too

- “Jae?”

- “Yeah, babe?”

- He asks while coming behind you

- Snaking his arms around your waist as he holds you close to his body

- CUE THE STOMACH DROP

- You just stand there kinda stunned

- “Y/N…? Did you need something…?”

- “I… i can’t remember……”

- Seriously so extra!! when it comes to reactions

- *Insert the gif of him on Mickey Mouse Club House where he’s slapping his knee and pretending to laugh*

- Seriously doesn’t give a fuck if his bandmates are around

- Sometimes he even purposely kisses you in front of Donghyuck because he knows he’ll get a hella funny reaction outta him

- But honestly,, he loves showing you off

- He gets a rise out of making you flustered

- For example ;;;

- He’ll be standing behind you, arms wrapped around you, chin resting on your shoulder

- A very familiar stance for the two of you

- And suddenly he’s planting light kisses on your neck

- The ticklish sensation causing you to flinch away

- A red tint instantly flooding your cheeks

- And this fucker knows what he did to you

- Cause when you look at him he’s already looking at you

- Grinning like an idiot

- And failing to suppress his giggles

- Prompting you to whine while you bury your face in your hands

- All in all, your relationship is very comfortable to say the least

- This kid just wants someone he can hold

- Someone who alleviates the stress from his career

- Someone who loves him just as much as he loves you (’:

There are two kinds of people in this world: hopeless romantics and realists. A realist just sees that face and packs it in with every other pretty girl they’ve ever seen before. The hopeless romantic becomes convinced that God put them on Earth to be with that one person. But there is no God and life is only as meaningful as you fool yourself into thinking it is. Guys who get laid a lot are realists. You should be listening.” - Samantha Borgens, Stuck In Love.

thejonderettegirl  asked:

Hi, can please write a Bughead headcanon about them being obliviously cuddly/touchy-feely? Thanks

Here you go, hope you like it!

Headcannon: Jughead can’t keep his hands off Betty whenever he’s sitting next to her, even when they’re with their friends, and Betty can’t stop smiling or blushing every time he does.

Jughead slid onto the bench of the picnic table, his knee knocking into Betty’s as he settled into the seat next to her. As Betty glanced up to meet his gaze, she bit her bottom lip to hide the same smile that always threatened to creep onto her lips whenever Jughead was around.

“Can we please talk about this ridiculous photography assignment?” Veronica asked from her seat on the other side the table. “It makes less sense than the plot to that movie Kevin made us watch last week about that creepy humanoid duck alien thing.”

Betty’s eyes drifted from her friends sitting at the other end of the table, to the boy sliding his hand onto her knee next to her.

“Hey, Howard the Duck is a classic and should be treated as such,” Kevin defended his movie of choice, pointing a finger at Veronica before reaching forward to grab a hand full of chips from the bag on the table. “Besides, the assignment seems pretty straight forward. Make a collage of the most meaningful experience from your past. Doesn’t really scream complex, pull-your-hair-out-after-six-cups-of-coffee-and-a-bottle-of-Advil, research assignment to me.”

Gently, Betty placed a hand on Jughead’s arm, feeling the fabric of his jacket through her fingers as she focused her attention on the splintering piece of wood on the table.

“Yeah, but every meaningful experience I can think of involves expensive shoes or really fancy cheese and I don’t think Mr. Buckley will appreciate such sophisticated taste,” Veronica pointed out, crossing her legs underneath the table and leaning forward to take a bite of her salad. “What do you think Betty?”

Jughead intertwined his fingers through hers, his thumb gently rubbing the back of her hand as they locked eyes, completely oblivious to anything else happening in the world around them.

“Hmm?” Betty mumbled, her eyes never breaking Jughead’s gaze. Veronica raised a curious eyebrow at the couple, quickly bending down to find their interlocked hands resting comfortably between them under the table.

“Are you kidding me?” Veronica gasped, turning to Kevin with wide eyes. “They’re totally holding hands under the table again!”

“Busted,” Kevin stood from the table to place a firm hand in the center of the wooden surface. “Drop em’ you two, we had a deal!”

“We tried, V, honestly,” Betty tried to explain, turning to Jughead and shrugging helplessly. “It’s like this gravitational pull that we can’t seem to break. Kind of like Kev and his bad taste in movies.”

“First of all rude, second of all gag,” Kevin scrunched up his nose in disgust as he snatched the bag of potato chips from the table and shoved a handful into his mouth.

“Okay, whatever but can you two please stop caressing each other long enough to listen to me complaining about school and expensive shoes?” Veronica whined, shoving her lunch tray away from her to place her elbows on the surface.

“Do we have a choice?” Jughead muttered. “Because I can think of about 734 other things I could be doing right now that sound like a better option than that.”

“Yeah, well, the one thing you really want to be doing right now is sitting right next to you so…” Kevin mumbled under his breath, tossing a chip into the air and catching it in his mouth.

“Kev!” Betty protested, her cheeks beginning to turn a faint pink color that always gave away her embarrassment.

“Oh, come on, you set that one up for me,” Kevin told her, his lips curling into a devilish smile as he set the bag of chips back onto the table.

“He’s right you know,” Veronica agreed. “You fell right into the trap.”

“I’m going to go get some more chips,” Jughead announced, standing from the picnic table and turning to Betty before walking back to the student lounge. “You want anything Bets?”

“No, I’m good thanks,” Betty smiled up at Jughead, their eyes lingering a second longer than necessary.

Veronica cleared her throat, and the couple turned away from each other to glance uncomfortably at the ground. “Oh no, we’re good too, Jugs, thanks,” Veronica said sarcastically, rolling her eyes at him as she watched him walk up the hill.

“You guys are the worst,” Betty informed them, crossing her arms over her chest and leaning forward on the table.

“And you two are adorable,” Kevin swooned.

“Adorably annoying,” Veronica corrected him. “Seriously control the touchy feely stuff while we’re around would you? Otherwise you’re gonna have to find some other friends to ignore every time the two of you are within a few feet of each other.”

“We’re not that bad are we?” Betty wondered, her brows drawing together in concern as she thought back to all the times her friends had caught them with their hands all over each other when they were supposed to be hanging out as a group.

“Trust me, you don’t want her to answer that, B,” Kevin warned her, turning to Veronica who simply to a sip of her water and shrugged.

“I’m really sorry guys,” Betty apologized. “I promise to be a better friend, I’m just…”

“In love?” Kevin finished for her, raising an intrigued eyebrow and crumpling his empty chip bag before tossing it in the trashcan behind him.

“What?” Betty gasped, her heart skipping a beat at the mention of the word ‘love.’ “No, I-”

“It’s okay to admit it, Betty,” Veronica cut her off, her face softening as she placed a gentle hand on Betty’s arm. “That boy can’t keep his eyes off you - or his hands it seems. I mean you’re literally his whole world. He obviously feels the same way.”

“You think?” Betty asked, hoping with everything she had that Veronica was right. “Sometimes I’m not so sure.”

“You should be,” Veronica assured her, grabbing her tray and turning in her seat to toss her empty salad container into the trash. “And you should tell him.”

“Oh, I don’t…” Betty mumbled, fully prepared to tell Veronica that she couldn’t tell him something like that, at least not yet. But after a moment of thinking about how she had been dating Jughead for almost six months and that her heart raced every time she was in the same room as him, she started to think that telling him that she loved him wasn’t so crazy after all. “You really think I should?”

“I do,” Veronica nodded. “And I think you should tell him tonight.”

“Tell who what?” Jughead snuck up behind Betty, wrapping an arm around her shoulders before returning to his spot next to her on the bench.

“Nothing!” Betty said almost too quickly. “It’s nothing - um do you want to walk me home tonight after we finish up at the Blue and Gold? There’s something I kind of wanted to talk to you about.”

“Absolutely,” Jughead told her, leaning forward to brush an eyelash off her cheek and smiling down at her. “Can’t wait.”

“Yeah,” Betty beamed at him, her heart beating a mile a minute the way it always did when he was this close to her. “Me either.”

valki in ragnarok

having just come out of ragnarok i can say i was moderately pleased with how valki was handled

i mean yea, i’m disappointed there wasn’t more interaction, but i could definitely see them possibly being a thing in the next movie. cuz like there were definitely Looks ™ between them, and during their Big Scene where they fight there is palpable sexual tension and loki is flirting for his liiiife. for his life i tell ya!

and like spoilers! but he’s the one who triggers her memories of a valkyrie and reminds her who she used to be in the past and it’s so!!!!! significant!!!!

also he ends up tied up in her apartment and doesn’t look too unhappy about it. and like they fight side by side at the end, and even in the final shot, the two of them are standing together next to thor’s throne, staring into the beyond. it’s a pretty meaningful shot, i think.

there are a few more stolen looks between them throughout the movie but we’d need like a solid bluray copy to catch them all (they’re split up for most of the film, although they do work as a team). and it DOES feel like there might be some deleted scenes with interaction, because there’s some stuff with the Grand Master (jeff goldblum) that must’ve been cut. i mean loki is trying to get into his inner circle and val is his scavenger who brings him valuable objects/people. so her and loki must’ve run into each other before/after she caught thor. and it’s clear when they have their fight scene that it wasn’t their first proper meeting. (bonus: tessa thompson’s interview, where she says it’s a love/hate between them is not for nothing, so there must’ve been more scenes. am i reaching? nope, shut up. bonus no.2: tom hiddleston was asked why he changed outfits a lot during the movie and if he was doing it to impress a girl and he said yes, there’s a girl SOOOOO)

there are some hints of thor/val too, some looks and some banter here and there, although it mostly feels platonic at this point. the thing is, when val fights thor in the beginning, it’s nowhere neeeeaaaaar as tense and interesting as when she fights loki. thor may call her a coward and he may try to get her to fight, but it’s loki who really gets to her in their brief interactions. it’s loki who she has most stuff in common (identity crisis, self-preservation instincts, pragmatism etc) also, the chemistry i got from thor/val was little sister/big brother. thor doesn’t seem in the head space for romance momentarily. so i’m choosing to stay hopeful.

and if nothing else, there’s always fanfic.

but the movie was great! go see it!

Double Dating for Dummies x Jeff Atkins

requested by anon ;  Can you write one where you are on a double date with Clay and Hannah, your date is Jeff. Originally you went so it wouldn’t be awkward for anyone as it is their first date together but turns out it was also a real date too between Jeff and you, which you don’t find out till later on when Clay says I told you this double date would help all of us.

You still couldn’t believe you let Hannah talk you in to this. A double date never goes well, that’s basic knowledge for everybody who watches way too many shows and teen drama’s.
‘Why was this a good idea again?’ You ask Hannah, while you look how she runs her hand through her short hair, her eyes focused on her reflection in the mirror.
‘Because you’re helping me out, [Y/N]. I don’t want to mess things up with Clay, and with you there, it will be so less awkward.’ Hannah turned around, smiling at you.
‘Hannah, I’m pretty sure Clay likes you anyway. He did confess that, right? You told me about, twenty times.’ You chuckled.
‘I know, but still. Besides, Clay is bringing along a friend, it will be loads of fun!’
‘For you two, yeah, still not sure which friend of Clay you’re referring to.’ You had been doubtful about your ‘date’, not sure who to expect. With Clay, you never really knew. However, since he had told Hannah how much he liked her, Hannah had been looking happier. She smiled again, made jokes and messed around with you. It was nice to see her like that again.
‘Don’t worry about it, [Y/N], I’m sure it won’t be that bad,’ Hannah grinned. ‘Besides, you’re doing this for me, so don’t you dare to be too focused on your date.’ She gave you a cheeky wink and then took her phone that buzzed loudly from the table. ‘They’re almost here!’ She announced happily.
‘Oh, joy.’
‘C’mon, I promise you won’t regret it. Have I told you you’re literally the best?’
‘Not nearly enough,’ you laughed, ‘but c’mon, let’s go downstairs.’
Just when you got down the stairs, the doorbell rang, announcing Clay’s and your dates arrival.
Hannah immediately opened up the door, greeting Clay with giving him a hug. A bit hidden behind Clay, you saw your company for the night. And, it actually wasn’t too bad. Fuck that, you were suddenly glad Clay was friends with him.
Jeff’s dark hair was in its usual quiff, his bright white teeth nervously tugging at his bottom lip and his hands pushed into the pockets of his black jeans. He was wearing a grey long sleeved shirt, with three buttons on the top of the shirt, that he hadn’t bothered to button up.
‘Oh, [Y/N], you know Jeff, right?’ Hannah ginned, turning around towards you. She looked very happy with herself, as did Clay. You kinda hated the smug smile on their faces, but couldn’t help but be happy with Jeff standing there.
‘Yeah, hi.’ You smiled, waving a bit awkwardly. Maybe the awkwardness wouldn’t be between Hannah and Clay, but between Jeff and you.
‘Hi, [Y/N].’ Jeff smiled back, pulling his hands out of his jeans pockets.
‘So, you two ready to go? We could go to the movies, and then go to the diner to have a milkshake or something?’ Clay suggested.
‘Sounds great!’ Hannah smiled, and you nodded along.
Apparently Jeff was driving, so you were forced to site in the passenger seat next to him, while Hannah and Clay sat in the backseat. The whole drive they were so caught up in their conversation that they barely noticed Jeff and you.
‘They seem pretty close,’ Jeff joked, looking at you and then glancing at the mirror.
‘They do, huh. Makes you wonder why they even want to go on a double date,’ you pointed out.
‘Yeah,’ Jeff said, focusing on the road. ‘So, eh, what kinda movie do you want to see?’
‘I don’t really have a preference. I like all kinds of movies. As long as it isn’t too romantic, because I’m not sure we’ll survive that with those two with us,’ you joked, pointing towards the backseat.
‘I can only agree with you,’ Jeff grinned. ‘Good thing I picked out a movie. Not sure what it is about, I just went with it because I liked the title.’
‘And what is the title?’
‘Don’t remember.’ Jeff confessed, a sheepish smile on his lips, making you laugh out loud.
‘What did I sign up for?’ You said, still laughing.

Turned out you signed up for a night full of laughs with Jeff, about how Hannah and Clay would get stuck together at one point, and how they would have to be together forever. It had actually been a while that you had so much fun, and it did surprise you. Sure, Jeff was pretty nice to look at, but you never knew he was actually a fun guy too. You two had a lot in common, more then you had thought.
You barely even noticed the meaningful glances Hannah gave Jeff and you. The movie had been absolutely amazing. Jeff did have a good taste in movies.
Now, the four of you were sitting in the diner, enjoying a milkshake while Jeff and you shared a plate of fries. You still were kinda hungry, but didn’t want to admit it. Jeff did notice it anyway, and ordered himself a plate of fries, but ending up sharing it with you. Even though he barely ate any fries. It did warm your heart a bit.
‘So, Jeff,’ Clay started, grinning at Jeff who was seated on the opposite side of the booth. You were sitting right beside Jeff. ‘I think you have to thank me, huh?’
‘Yeah, thanks,’ Jeff laughed.
‘Wait, I’m not following,’ you added, confused. This date was all about Hannah and Clay, wasn’t it?
‘Jeff wanted to ask you out, but was too afraid, so I came up with the idea of a double date. And I think it worked out pretty good.’ Clay smiled.
You frowned, and looked still confused at Jeff.
‘Is that true?’ You asked him.
‘Eh, yeah.’ Jeff admitted, nervously tugging at the sleeves of his shirt.
‘And I thought this was all about Hannah and Clay being awkward around each other.’ You said, a bit flabbergasted that you weren’t aware of this set-up date.
‘Oh, c’mon, have you seen them together?’ Jeff laughed. ‘But hey, doesn’t matter. You, eh, you’re not mad, right?’
‘Why would I be?’ You smiled. ‘It’s kinda cute.’ You admitted, cheeks starting to get bright red. You quickly looked at the other side of the booth, but Hannah and Clay were tangled up in yet another intriguing conversation.
‘How about a walk?’ Jeff proposed. ‘We’ll be back here to give them a ride home, they won’t even notice we were gone.’ You nodded and slide out of the booth, waiting for Jeff.
It was quite a dark night, since the moon was hidden behind the clouds. Luckily it hadn’t cooled down too much.
‘So, it was all a set-up?’ You started, smiling.
‘Yeah, eh, I guess I’m the awkward one here.’ Jeff laughed. ‘You’re really not mad, huh?’
‘Of course I’m not, as long as we get to do this again, without Hannah and Clay.’
‘That’s a promise.’ Jeff immediately said.
‘Can’t wait.’ You smiled, looking at him.
Turns out that double dates aren’t always trouble and drama.

Hi! As an avid fic reader, there is something that has always bothered me about a lot of fan-fiction I have read in the Stucky fandom or the marvel fandom in general. There is almost always a level of casual sexism against the female characters, for example, in many fics the female characters are referred to as "girls" despite being grown fucking women also is it necessary to talk about how beautiful Natasha or Peggy are in every single fic? Aren't we reducing them to their beauty?

This is actually an incredibly complicated issue. Yes, there definitely is a fair amount of casual sexism in stucky fanfic and in fanfic in general. But on the other hand, compared to general fiction and the world at large, there is significantly less sexism. I’d also point out that the majority of transformative fandom is female identifying, queer, or both, this makes fanfics relationship with sexism a lot more complicated. Internalized misogyny is incredibly hard to sort out and be aware of, because it’s your own internal monologue and in the case of many fanfic authors, your own internal monologue as a woman and (in most cases) a feminist.

The specific examples you pulled are tricky ones, cause on one hand, yeah theres certainly an element of sexism in there, but on the other hand there also isn’t necessarily a bad wicked thing. In most stucky fics, the narration is third person pov through either steve or bucky, and in the case of two men born in the 1910′s calling grown women girls would absolutely be a part of their vernacular. It’s absolutely sexist, but I’d argue that it’s a strongly internalized attitude and language pattern both of them would absolutely have problems recognizing and or getting rid of. So even if it’s not a carefully thought out choice from the author, it serves as interesting characterization. Also since the majority of fic authors are women, the relationship with using girls isn’t as simple, for one thing it is a part of common english to use women and girls interchangeably and it’s not something that’s closely examined by all women all the time. Also, I think theres as aspect of it’s usage that is reclaiming it in a way. I mean girls isn’t a slur by any means but it’s not free of negative meaning, and by referring to wonderful characters as girls it in some ways seeks to remove those negative connotations- by presenting to the reader a group of people who the reader admires and saying some of them are girls and thats great, it does something meaningful for a woman reading. Using the word girl/s isn’t always something bad, especially when women are using it.

As for calling them beautiful all the time, I’d argue that 9/10 times theres absolutely nothing inherently sexist about mentioning their beauty. I mean it is objectively true, mcu’s female characters are beautiful. Now the reason behind all of them being gorgeous is pretty sinister, hollywood has an insanely toxic and sexist beauty standard and the fact that female characters in movies have to be beautiful in the same way is a whole other barrel of fish and we’re talking about fanfic, we’re dealing with characters who have a appearance and personality not 100% set by the author of a fic. Honestly, I’ve read thousands of Stucky fics and I think I’ve read a handful where women were actively reduced to their beauty. I mean when was the last time you read a novel by a cishet man? It’s absolutely horrifying, the way they treat women is disgusting, and fic is so much better.

Most of the time in fic, beauty is just one aspect of their character, for example Peggy’s strength and steely determination usually follow any mention of her beauty and Natasha’s dry humour and keen intelligence usually follow any mention of hers. On the other hand yeah, you get a lot of Bucky dancing with a beautiful nameless woman who only appears as an object of desire and jealousy and yeah, thats a problem. But I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all to mention a woman’s beauty provided shes being not shown as important only because she’s beautiful.

I’d also argue that the vast majority of sexism in fanfic isn’t calling female characters girls or referring to their beauty, its demonizing or ignoring female characters who are “in the way” of a m/m ship. I see this happen a LOT with Sharon in particular, but also Peggy and Natasha. You don’t see the female character who is canonically with one half of a m/m ship is a controlling, violently jealous, homophobic monster plotline often anymore, but it does still come up. More common is the female character who is canonically with one half of a m/m ship is a endlessly pure, patient, supportive and unconditionally understanding prop who exists only to step graciously out of the way of the m/m pairing. I see that all the damn time and it bothers me.

Female characters tend to not be as developed in canon and because of that often also remain underdeveloped in fanfic and also tend in both canon and fic to be there only to support the male characters not existing outside that context. That or the fact that f/f ships are incredibly neglected. I mean theres like one f/f fic for every like seven m/m fics. Part of that is the fact that there are so many less women than men in fiction. Part of that is on us for just not writing wlw and favouring mlm or m/f ships. I have really complicated feelings about this as a queer woman, I mean I‘m running a ship blog about two men. I could be putting my time into natsharon, cartinelli or claire temple/misty knight, but I’m here instead. I worked through lots of internalized homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and aphobia while reading m/m fics, not f/f and I spend so much more time and energy on m/m ships. I mean here I am, a wlw and here I am investing almost all my leisure time on men. I mean I love it in this fandom and it’s absolutely my choice to be here but part of me wonders what it would be like if I had gone through that process with a f/f ship instead and what it would be like to invest this time on women. I wonder what it would be like to be in mcu fandom if our source material treated it’s female characters better and had more of them.

You also see barely any not white, disabled, unattractive or poor women in fic, but once again part of that is a distinct lack of diversity within the source material. But you know what, I do not see many fics with Helen Cho or Claire Temple in them at all, let alone as developed characters.

Anyways sexism in fandom is a lot more complicated than it initially appears. Nothing is ideologically pure, even fanfic, but due to the nature of fanfic being written by people who you can easily contact in the sometimes caustic forum of tumblr I think it’s incredibly important to be gentle with authors who violate what you individually see as correct. Much of tumblr’s atmosphere of callout culture has a very black and white view of what justice is and what is correct, when in reality theres a lot of layers to this, it’s not a simple black and white dichotomy. People are at different places in their journeys, theres a lot of reasons why authors write things the way they do that you might not be aware of, broad sweeping statements saying x is always bad are a real dicey area to step into (and yes, I see the irony in saying that)

So while fandom certainly needs to take a closer look at our own internalized misogyny (and racism and ableism and audism and so on), I think theres much more to be gained from larger conversations, self reflection and making an active effort to be kinder to women than there is from things like carefully abstaining from words like girls.

Hey there, I’m Chloe! I’m quite a shy, introverted person but I really love close friendships and the idea of a penpal seems awesome so I thought I’d give this a shot. I love talking to new people but face-to-face can be somewhat unsettling because I’m a pretty anxious person. Having deep, meaningful conversations over email/letter or anything seems fantastic but I’m also open to just simple everyday conversations with no rhyme or reason.
Anyway, I live in England and I’ve just finished my second year at university. I’m basically a nerd and love spending time indoors watching Netflix, movies, anime or going on the internet. I also enjoy drawing (although I’m not very good) and enjoy doing different journals (for example I love wreck this journal) and such and I also love Nintendo games - I’m a massive fan of animal crossing, anything Mario, things like that and I’m also a big fan of Pokémon (games, anime, movies, drawing, manga, all of it). I really enjoy crime shows like criminal minds and bones but I also like fantasy stuff like once upon a time! As well as this I enjoy watching youtube (my favourite youtubers are danisnotonfire and AmazingPhil and I also love watching art youtubers too).
So that’s basically some things that I like! I’m quite happy to talk over email, letter, text or anything, I don’t mind - personally the idea of sending and receiving letters is so awesome but I’m happy to use other methods as well as its better to hold a conversation. I’ve never done anything like this before but I’m hopeful!

Preferences: Any gender I don’t mind, and I’d prefer someone aged 18 and over. I only speak English so only people who are fluent in English please but I don’t mind what country.

Hold up. Wait a minute. You HATE the Lion King???

Yeah, I really can’t stand it. I don’t like any of the music, and the story has no second act. I know that I’m pretty much alone in this opinion, and I know that it is a very special and meaningful movie for a lot of people.

I never got the 'Kara is jealous of any new friends Lena makes' thing. That is super unhealthy and OoC behavior for Kara. Why have jealousy fics when you can have Kara hiding badly behind a potted plant coaching Lena through casual social interactions and wildly fist-pumping the slightest success. Or Kara getting Winn, Alex, and Lena over for a game night and saying something like "The prequels were the best Star Wars movies" and watching the three immediately unite against her with a smile

Hahahahaha plus Kara trying to help Lena through social interactions is hilarious because it’s like the blind leading the blind, since Kara’s a big mess at being human.

But actually…

What’s great about Kara and Lena is that Kara is pretty bad at earthly social cues, but is great at emotionally connecting with people. And Lena seems generally very suave in a situation with strangers but probably struggles to form meaningful deeper connections.

This is why Rhea was so easily able to get so close to Lena so quickly. When they started opening up to each other emotionally, it was like .5 seconds before Lena was like “you’re my mom now,” because I don’t think she’s used to that kind of depth of connection, barring what she has with Kara. But she’s also very witty and quick-thinking conversationally, so on the day-to-day she’s probably aces at communicating with people and making friends on a surface level.

Meanwhile, Kara’s giving strangers emotional speeches that change the foundation of how they live their lives, but forgets that when someone says “What planet are you from?” they don’t mean it literally, along with a million other little awkward moments.

At a party, Lena’s the host. Moving from conversation to conversation with wit and ease, but never staying long enough to form a deeper connection.

Cut to Kara, who struggles to smoothly have light conversation in a group of people, but who ends up staying in the back corner the whole night with a girl who is having a mid-20s crisis, having way-too-deep conversations for the atmosphere around them.

(Actually, au in which they haven’t met yet and Lena throws a party, and her friends complain that she never stays in one place long enough to really talk to them. But then she ends up getting sucked into a conversation with this blonde girl that she’s never seen before for the rest of the night.)

But honestly this makes them the perfect tag team for friendships.

They’d be great together as friends to Reign, for instance. Where one friend is lacking in finesse, the other friend excels.

Sad about something and don’t want to skate around it, but aren’t ready to talk in-depth about it? Lena has some great blunt one-liners that will let you laugh about your situation.

Sad about something and want to really talk about it, but don’t know how to get into it all? Kara will carefully and comfortably guide you to the heart of the matter.

Looking for concrete solutions? Lena has a trick up her sleeve.

Looking for emotional resolution? Kara has wisdom at her fingertips.

But even when they aren’t both friends with the person, they’re perfect options to give each other advice on how to handle something that’s outside their own wheelhouse.

Of course, for both situations, they’d fumble at navigating when to use which skill set and who knows how well the one uses the friend advice or adjusts to the mood shifts (which could actually make for some funny moments…) but eventually they’d find their flow.

It’s like some yin yang shit, I’m telling you.

And I guess I just prefer to think of them as a team that wants to see the other succeed and connect to the world in a healthy way, than as individuals who wish to win the other and who feel threatened by the successful connections in the other’s life.

And given the way their friendship is portrayed—the just Excessive Support that they’re prone to give each other—I also think that this support is simply the more accurate way to portray them in headcanons and fic.

So re: your meta on Loki in Ragnarok - I've been doing a lot of work on myself lately and in doing so I've learned a lot about codependency. After I went to see Ragnarok I sat down and re-watched the previous Thor movies and I came to the shocking realization that, especially in TDW, Thor and Loki's relationship absolutely smacks of codependency. Thor's working way harder to preserve their relationship, to prove to Loki that he is good, to get him to make good decisions. (cont)

(cont) And I think after he leaves Asgard at the end of TDW, and in the time leading up to Ragnarok, he has a lot of time to think on things, a lot of time to realize that Loki is his own person, that he needs to make his own decisions, and that, up to this point, he’s even gone so far as to (try to) make those decisions for him. And it simply doesn’t work that way. He wants the best for Loki, he really, truly does. But if Loki doesn’t want that for himself? There’s nothing to be done. (cont)

(cont) That, for me, is what made Thor’s elevator speech so powerful, because I connected with it. I connected with wanting the best for the people in your life, but not being able to do anything about it. Ironically, the best thing to do about it is to put the choice back on the other person. To wash your hands of any responsibility for the other person. That’s what pushes them to make change - making change yourself. Saying “I’m not taking up for you anymore. This is your problem (cont)

(cont) and you need to be the one to deal with it.” And the other person will always test that change. Loki trying to stab Thor in the back (metaphorically)? Perhaps that was planned before the elevator speech, but it was still a test. That was Loki going “Pfft, he SAID that but he’s not going to FOLLOW THROUGH.” And when Thor DID follow through? That’s when it really hit home. Things are changing. And he needs to change with them. (end)

To preface this, I’ll give a bit of my own history–I myself am not codependent, but my mother is and I’ve watched her struggle with it (along with struggling to help her with it) for a long time.  And, for me, I think if we’re going to put that anywhere on Thor and Loki’s relationship, it would be during The Avengers, because The Dark World does the opposite of one of the biggest hallmarks of codependency, in the enabling of the other person’s behavior.

In The Avengers, Thor is desperate to reason with Loki, to get him to come home, to excuse what he’s trying to do here, and pretty much all of Thor’s meaningful relationships in that movie are Loki.  He largely overlooks why Loki’s there or excuses it with how they can stop it, how they can go back to the way they were before.  He has to be stabbed by Loki (who has led the army there and Thor is still saying they can go back) before he realizes that this cannot continue.

However, in The Dark World, Thor is through with excusing Loki’s actions and instead is calling him on his shit.  The best examples, imo:

THOR: What help were you in your cell?
LOKI: Who put me there? Who put me there!?
THOR: You know damn well! You know damn well who!

and

 LOKI: Son of Odin…
THOR: No. Not just of Odin. You think you alone were loved of Mother?

Loki tries to shift blame for his actions that landed him in the cell, he’s trying to say that he himself is the only one who truly mourned Frigga and Thor is having absolutely none of it.  He says he wishes he could trust Loki, but it’s clear he doesn’t.  It’s a movie that’s about Thor working through not enabling Loki, struggling to recognize that he cannot force Loki to be good again if Loki doesn’t want to be.  (It’s also a movie where Thor has significant relationships outside of Loki–with the W3, with Jane, with Odin.)  And then it’s Ragnarok that follows up with how he’s finally achieved that acceptance.  I see TDW as his struggle with letting go of all of that, and Ragnarok with the achieving of it.

Thor’s actions are pretty reasonable in The Avengers because he’s just seen Loki (alive!) for the first time in years and he’s trying to understand what the hell happened and this is the brother he’s known for centuries, if he hadn’t tried to reach out to Loki, it would have been pretty weird and cold!  But I can see having a meaningful representation of codependency in the arc of their story and that elevator speech is powerful because that’s the point where we see Thor has well and truly arrived at the place he needs to be re: Loki.

I would shift the arc of the codependency reading back a movie–Thor’s struggle to accept Loki as his own person with his own responsibilities is between The Avengers and The Dark World, helped along by how he goes out to help the worlds being brutalized by the Marauders, seen the effects of Loki’s actions (destroying the Bifrost, so there’s a power vacuum because they know Asgard can’t come help them) and getting in touch with Jane again, because Thor cannot put his life on hold for Loki any longer.

But I absolutely agree that Loki’s side of this is what happens with someone who is codependent (or what we would hope happens when we stop enabling the other person), that he realizes he has to make decisions based on what he himself wants, not what he’s emotionally manipulating other people into doing. And I love SO MUCH that this movie shows that, when Loki has to make that choice of his own volition, when he cannot put it on Thor or Odin or Asgard, he chooses to help.  Because ultimately, no, Loki doesn’t want to be left behind and that he needs to be more than what he was.

Part #1: Flight of the Movie & Anime References

This section is pretty much setup for the next three essays. There’s a couple sections here that I have a fair bit to say about, but probably just as many where I’ll close out with some minor observations, or reference to someone else’s Good Post™.

What I think is important is noting the consistency and similarity with which Homestuck engages in meaningful reference. I just want you to have this list in mind as I flesh out the three truly impactful references I want to talk about in this series.

So here’s a short list of cases where Homestuck outright leans on other stories to structure itself, with accompanying references:

So, I finally got to watch Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle (spoilers)

Look, let’s get it right out of the way; Kingsman 2 isn’t as good as the first movie. As of writing this post, it’s sitting at 50% critics approval on Rotten Tomatoes; I think it probably more deserves it’s 71% audience approval rating. Not great, but good, enjoyable.

As such, things I liked/thought were good;

1. Eggsy and Harry’s relationship and how it still stays a massive part of the heart of the movie. In the second movie it’s Eggsy that has to believe in Harry, a good twist on their relationship in the first movie. It’s down right heart warming to see them hug when Harry finally gets his memory back, and watching them fight together like a well oiled machine was terribly satisfying after the first movie denied it to us.

2. Merlin’s death. Now wait, let me explain. Absolutely, I’d have preferred if Merlin survived (and if there is a sequel and he’s shows up with prosthetics then I’m all for it), but Merlin’s death was movie death done right. It was a meaningful sacrifice that impacted the characters, the plot, and was true to Merlin’s character. It was an active decision, and having him sing Country Roads was brilliant and sad and inspired.

3. Eggsy and Tilde’s relationship. I was never really in the crowd of people who found the anal sex joke too outrageous in the first (I kind of found it strangely sex positive for her, and also I was pretty okay with the church massacre so I felt like the line was already probably crossed?) but when I heard that she was going to continue to be part of the sequel, I was a little wary. But honestly, her relationship with Eggsy was sweet and understated. Tilde - and Eggsy’s relationship with her - end up serving the important purpose of showing that Eggsy is still different from the Kingsman of old, something that since he’s now a suited gentleman, was going to be hard to portray. The fact that he has someone he does love and how that impacts his character is a nice contrast between someone like Harry, who had no one and had died with that regret, and it was good to have in the movie.

4. Julianne Moore’s Poppy. No, she wasn’t as good as Samuel Jackson’s Valentine but jeez that wouldn’t be fair to hold against her. Jackson’s character was a tour de force and although Moore never reaches that level, her villain was fun and engaging. Her “legalize drugs” was a decent follow up to the first movie’s “save the environment” villain scheme, and although it wasn’t quite as fun of a plot, the story was fine, with enough mystery to be interesting.

5. Soundtrack was still amazing. Those fights in Poppy Land to Word Up and Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting weren’t the church scene, but they were still pretty damn good.

6. Harry’s handicap. I’m not sure if they specifically meant it this way, but it was kind of great to watch Harry’s troubles after he’s regained his memory, not just because they were hilarious, but also because if he’d lost an eye he would have lost his depth perception, and that’s the problems he was having. Also, watching Whiskey fuck up that bar while Merlin and Eggsy totally ignore him in favour of counselling Harry was great.

7. Elton “fuck you!” John. Look, Elton John was absolutely the best part of this movie, something I did not expect to be saying. If you’d told me I needed to watch Sir Elton John kill a guy with a piano dressed in rainbow feathers and glittery go-go boots I’d have wondered what drugs you were on. But he was hands down the most fun part of the movie, and his rescuing Harry (and more subtle anal joke) were absolutely fantastic.

That said, there were certainly some things that could have used some improvement.

And thus, in no particular order, the things I wasn’t that crazy about/needed some work;

1. Roxy’s death. Unlike Merlin’s death, Roxy’s death was pretty disappointing. Roxy was a secondary character, true, but she was, in many ways our tertiary protagonist (after Eggsy and Harry) and as a character, she deserved a death better than what she got. Her death was passive, in that it happened to her and she had no agency in it, it was the same death as all the other Kingsman we’d never met, and although it had an emotional impact on Eggsy, it really just served to let the story of “Eggsy and Merlin are all that’s left” happen, which is disappointing. Absolutely nothing would have been lost if Eggsy, Merlin and Roxy had been the ones to go the the USA and it’s too bad we couldn’t have had that happen.

2. The portrayal of America, in general? Look, I’m not American I’m Canadian, but I honestly felt a little uncomfortable with the portrayal of Americans in this movie. Apparently all American’s are southern cowboys and rednecks in this universe, which was kind of unnecessary. It worked in the first movie because we all understood that the church was a clear stand in for the West Borough Baptist Church and fuck those guys. But in this movie other than Halle Berry we didn’t get a single American character who wasn’t a huge “redneck” joke, and that joke got pretty tiring pretty fast.

3. Introducing the Statesman. Look, I get that the movie had a lot of plot to cram into its run time but seriously, I’d like to have had some of that time devoted to actually developing the new characters. The first movie had great secondary characters; Tilde, Michelle, Dean, Charlie, Roxy, Chester King and Gazelle all felt like they had personalities and real character. The Statesmen were at best, one note, and at worst, embarrassingly blank. Ginger Ale wants to be an agent. Champagne is an honourable guy who doesn’t drink (and is also 100% just Jeff Bridges). Tequila is a newer agent “bad boy” who does drugs (and spends most of the movie frozen). And Whiskey. Whiskey has a tragic back story that gets shoved in at the last second and that’s about it. These characters could have been so much more, but the movie never takes the time to develop them, and so you’re never really invested in what happens to them.

4. Whiskey and Eggsy’s dynamic. They mostly didn’t have one, and that’s the problem. The movie really misses a grand opportunity to have a contrast between how Harry and Eggsy’s mentoring relationship contests with Whiskey and Eggsy’s…mostly because they don’t have one. Sure, they complete a couple of missions together but even they don’t don’t really work together at the festival or the lab; they’ve got no real banter, no relationship. Instead of having Eggsy and Whiskey build a relationship of trust that goes against Harry’s style - maybe have them both be risk takers that go against Harry’s more traditional style - the movie forces conflict by having Harry shoot Whiskey, which Eggsy naturally responds with appropriate anger. That said, they don’t even do anything with that because Eggsy immediately forgives Harry and it doesn’t really impact his trust of Harry at all. That in turns makes Whiskey’s betrayal fall pretty flat at the end, and it’s a real shame because it wouldn’t have taken much to add a real emotional dynamic to that.

5. Would it have killed them to have had a scene with Eggsy’s mom and baby sister? Yes, Michelle was there for 1 second at his wedding but seriously, his mother and his sister were major parts of his character and his arc in the first movie. I’m not saying she had to be a part of the plot or anything, but it would have been nice to have them there and continue that motive of how important family is to Eggsy.

Honestly, Kingsman 2 was probably never going to be better than the first, for the same reason Men in Black 2 wasn’t better than its first movie, or really any other movie that hinges on the mentor/protege relationship. By the end of the first movie Eggsy was a Kingsman and so that dynamic with Harry that was so core to the heart of the movie was gone. That said, Kingsman 2: the Golden Circle tried admirably to capture a new twist on that relationship while still staying true to its original’s themes and while it’s certainly not flawless I think it succeeds more than it fails. I’d definitely recommend it for a watch if you enjoyed the first one.
