subject case

How to have a conversation about a topic you’re not interested in or don’t know anything about:

  1. Listen to what the other person has to say about the topic.
  2. Ask a question about what they said. Asking them to clarify or explain something you don’t understand is great, but any question will do. All else fails, ask them to explain what they like about some part of the topic.
  3. Listen to their responses and go back to step 2.
  4. Do this until 5-15 minutes has passed, then change the subject to a topic of your interest, unless you are actually interested in learning more on this subject, in which case, go on for as long as you like.
  5. Sometimes, they will say something like “I’m sorry to blather on about [topic].” This is an attempt at a conversational dismount. You can either say “no, it was fascinating, thanks” and then bring up your own topic, or you can say “no, it’s fascinating, please keep going” if you want to keep hearing about their topic. Note the tense difference (past -> moving on, present -> keep going).

I just thought I’d write a script for this, because someone who can’t / won’t do this came up in a Captain Awkward column, and listening about topics you have no interest in is a really useful skill to have and not often explicitly taught, particularly to boys and men.

This isn’t a simple Elentori repost.

This is me, showing you how sometimes, artists can let themselves be influenced by a peer too heavily. And that simple inspiration can become near-plagiarism.

I’m not putting credit, even if none of these examples are from the same person. I’ve made that decision so no one gets shit over this– though I’m sorry because they are all great pieces, and I know a lot of time and work were put into all of them. I’m not here to bash, or to try and lessen anyone’s worth and talent. Plus– this could have happened with anyone. These are simply the examples I have collected over the past few months.

Last disclaimer: All of the artists above have not repeated this very often, if at all, of what I’ve seen. In fact, it’s not always copying. Just being inspired very heavily (as seen above). And I can see how good they are: Their potential, and, above all, their obvious talent. All in all, I simply want to point out one last time that this is not against them at all. They have simply provided me with the examples I need to make a point.

And who would I be showing other pieces without calling myself out: I’ve done it too, and I include myself in everything I’m saying. It is because I’ve done it, actually, that I take it to heart so much.

Which is fucking embarassing to admit so bear with me.

In fact, even if you do recognize any other of these pieces, don’t give anyone trouble. Please just– don’t ever send good-willed artists hate. Chances are, they were having a nice day before you showed up.

So… it’s well-known there are many ways for artists to learn. To become better: And one of these methods is to copy others.

But usually, these studies remain in your personal folders. They are not to post and claim as your own. Or if you do post them: you’d share it for what it is, I’m assuming.

And this is where this trend gets a little dismaying. In neither of the original posts was there a mention that Elentori was the inspiration. Even though it is obvious to any onlooker. Not even hidden in the tags. And I’ve checked all of these blogs’ archives just to make sure that I was not mistaking the copying and the copied.

I’m not diminishing Elentori’s work either: She’s a great reference, and I don’t know a soul who dislikes her work or doubts her talent. She’s actually made a brand for herslelf and that’s why her style lifts from the masses.

But that’s exactly it: she has found her own style, and it’s working out great for her. And that’s what I wish upon every other artist out there.

There is no reason to purposely put yourself in someone’s shadow, just because you admire them so much.

So like Noah Bradley says in his art camp:

Study art from masters. The older, the better. And if they’re dead, that’s the best. There’s nothing else they could’ve taught you.

(This isn’t an actual quote, it’s just very much the message he gives from what I remember.)

I would change that a little: Copy masters (Master painters, Disney illustrators… and there are more) as well, and especially. Don’t just copy trends or trendsetters, guys. Find your own signature. Something that others will want to copy as well. Something that’ll be uniquely yours. Try different things. Dwelve in cartoons even when you’re into realistic things. Just to better yourself.

And here’s a thought:

Can we make it socially acceptable to be comfortable, as artists, to cite our inspiration? To say;; hey, I tried this artist’s style today. Here’s how it turned out!! Because there must be a reason why we don’t do it. And maybe it’s some untold social construct?

I don’t know. I just think we should move past it.

It's really not uncommon for trans boys to be obsessed with feeling masculine, since, for a lot of trans boys, people around them don't see them as 'real men' and I think its a bit ignorant for you to assume that someone who likes/obsesses over masculinity cant be a trans man? I really mean this in the best way and not trying to be hostile. I just wanted to offer another perspective on it and hope you take it into consideration when you talk about this subject in the future is all. ♥

Hello! I meant it in the other way, I wasn’t saying he can’t be trans bc of those things, I’m saying it’d be a good fit for him to be trans bc of it! <3 Sorry if I wasn’t clear about the way I phrased that but I am def not saying he can’t be trans!

When I said “He’s a guy who’s obsessed with the idea of being masculine/macho, so either way would fit him“, I mean both cis and trans would be a good fit as an identity, bc you can see the obsession with masculinity as a cultural problem in latino boys or you can see it as a trans boy trying to be masculine to be seen as a “real man”.

Thank you for being passionate and caring to those who are trans, and I hope my explanation clears it up! <3

ppl who are not lgbt do not understand how homophobia and transphobia are so pervasive. that shit is present literally everywhere we turn and that is why we create safe spaces for ourselves because otherwise we have no escape. it’s not something we’re subject to during specific occasions where our queerness is “apparent” it’s something we’re subject to pretty much every waking moment regardless if we’re out or closeted or have yet to even realise that we’re queer !

The whole outrage over Harrison liking a social media post made me think about how fandoms can be very unhealthy in the way they view people. If you put someone on a pedestal ofcourse they are going to disappoint you. Especially young people need to learn that even though someone is ‘famous’ or known they are still a person, and people make and say stupid stuff all the time. The fact that you as a fan made up this fantasy and projected that image onto a real human being that exists in the world, is never that person’s fault. Fantasize all you want, but learn to differentiate between reality and fantasy.

Also there’s this sprint to judgement, like a single action or inaction define this person that you have never met or doesn’t even know. Just because something doesn’t match the fantasy image you have made up in your mind doesn’t make them a bad person. It only makes them human.

In this case the subject matter is very serious, but liking something that is essentially a joke, is not a perfect reflection of what the person liking it thinks about the subject, or is even close to being a statement on their part. It’s possible to think a topic is horrible and disagree with actions related to that topic and still laugh at jokes that concerns them. Not that everyone is likely to feel the same about that joke, and that’s fine. But to simple reduce someone’s person to that single action of liking something is very unhealthy and unfair. I’m sure there are alot of fans that have said some horrible things on this website and done things they’re not proud of, and they are not defined by those actions and those words. It’s one thing to say ‘okay that is not funny dude‘, and another to completely judge them as a horrible person.

It’s like when you know someone and they make a stupid joke, and you go ‘that’s not funny dude’ and they go ‘yeah I know’, and you both laugh. Alot of you like to imagine you’re a famous person’s ‘friend’, but seeing how you treat this so called ‘friend’, I’m not sure that’s the right word. Friends are friends because we know they aren’t perfect, we know they mean well but can be very stupid sometimes. Friendships are not about saying perfect sentences together in an endless loop, never growing or changing. It’s the opposite.

Especially when you’re young you have less experience of being judged, so you are less careful, simply because you don’t know better.

There’s this thing that actors like Chris Pratt use to say about the fact that they weren’t famous in their twenties, and that they are very grateful for that, because everyone has alot of growing and learning to get through in their twenties.

So yeah, my view on this is that maybe chill a little, and not become this outrage machine as soon as another human being does something stupid. YOU want compassion and understanding, so it’s your duty to show that to the world aswell. That doesn’t mean you can’t disagree with a thing or say they are wrong. You definitely can. Just treat other people as you want to be treated.

Thank you for reading.

Update: harrison tweeted an apology and unliked the post. Need I say more?

i will welcome anyone into the queer and/or lgbtqiap+ community who feels like they need it, unless they’re bigoted and make it an unsafe space for others there. you don’t owe me or any other person ‘in the community’ (which is a completely nebulous thing that exists in many different forms anyway) any kind of explanation of your identity or your right to be here. i’m fucking sick of all the gatekeeping i see, even from blogs who are supportive and inclusive of other identities, and i will never be part of it.

8.13.17 // 2:30pm //guide to school organization

this one was requested by @boglarkat-studyblr, @catharticstudying and @nevermindigotnothin, so i hope you find this useful! i’ve definitely tried a bunch of different organization methods over my years of schooling, so i know a fair bit about it. this post will include my current organizational system and also some other ones i’ve tried/thought of and their pros and cons. hopefully there’s something in here for everyone! xoxo, m

ps. you do not have to be impeccably organized to be successful. studyblr kind of perpetuates this “i need to have everything planned perfectly and color coded and filed away in this super neat system”. not everybody works that way and not everybody needs that in order to achieve their goals. find what works for you.

The descriptions of Alexander the Great in Sassanid and post-Sassanid Zoroastrian sources (where he is the embodiment of evil and contrasts *heavily* with pre-Sassanid and Islamic Persian depictions of him) are interesting not only because of how he’s shown as a barbarian warlord enemy of civilization but the way he’s described is with stuff like “Alexander the Roman” or “Alexander who came out of Egypt” or even in one text “Alexander the Christian”. It’s not just that he’s described through a different lens but the way he’s described as representing a composite spirit of barbarism and inaccurately described as Roman, Egyptian, Christian etc which is essentially a composite of things geographically west of Persia and considered “Other” by the Sassanids (their main enemy was the Eastern Roman Empire) reminds me a lot of how “orientalism” is described in terms of particular dynamics but in this case the subject matter is reversed from what most people are used to. It’s not even a simple flipping of the script bc e.g. Egypt is seen as belonging to “the West” which isn’t what you usually see in European sources

anonymous asked:

Hey, I was reading your post about Dean stepping away from Sam when on the phone with Cas and I was wondering if you could clarify what you meant. I wasn't sure what your point was, sorry.

Hi nonny,

Part of what I love about the Dean / Cas relationship is not what we see on screen but the subtext of what we see off screen and what is held back.

Things like the deleted scene going around my dash today with Cas saying ‘I’ve been told I’m getting funnier’ - well heck if that isn’t a conversation he’s had with Dean.  The fact that Dean took Cas to Hot Topic to buy Claire a grumpy cat plushy. What happened off screen after they went to the brothel in season 5, the fan fiction gap of 9x06, the drive home in 7x23 after Dean told Cas he would choose him and Cas felt partly forgiven, THE DRIVE HOME AFTER 12x12!!

So yeah I enjoy all this stuff a LOT :)

The phone calls tie into this nicely. I wrote a post particularly about phone conversations here:

https://tinkdw.tumblr.com/post/158661826177/every-time-its-always-dean-who-makes-the-call-to

Essentially, the fact that Dean often moves away from Sam when calling Cas or is completely off screen when speaking to Cas and, when Sam comes in or he comes near Sam, seems to change the subject back to the case at hand (it’s quite clearly often NOT a continuation of the conversation from before). This just upholds more off screen development of their relationship friendship which is canonically referred to on screen through these references.

So, you know when you were a kid and had a crush, you’d want to speak to them, well heck if you’re going to do that around your sibling, especially one who seems to constantly roll his eyes at you anyway….well imagine you’re a 30-something year old man with crap all relationship experience, a shitty childhood, a complicated understanding of your own sexuality and your crush is a celestial wavelength of intent in the body of a sexy yet holy tax accountant who most of the time seems oblivious and you’re not even sure if he is interested in anyone sexually or you as more than a friend, a mission to protect or his charge, even if he clearly cares about you a lot?

Yeah, its complicated….

So, over the years we rarely see Dean spending time alone with Cas, but we do get snippets of phone calls.

This is 11x06 by the way, for example, or as I like to call it the expositional episode where Amara canonically said that DEAN REPRESENTS HUMANITY. Only 2 seasons late but you know better late than never ;) So here Dean steps away from Sam to speak to Cas, trying to be supportive but in the end kind of being an unhelpful ass to Cas’s struggle as he doesn’t get it and needs him working to solve the problem at hand (kind of exactly how Cas reacts back to him in 12x02).

And ah, season 12, the season that just keeps on giving….

First we have Dean and Cas’s amazingly open exchange in 12x02 precisely when SAM ISN’T THERE. Dean opens up to Cas like a book, delves into his feelings for Chucks sake…. “It’s all just toooo much”. And yeah, like I say, Cas responds in such a mirrored way to 11x06.

But then? Well Mary is our stand in Sam here, when she is around, Dean’s all business.

This is part of a running theme and kind of cements the point I’m making within ONE episode. And its a Bucklemming episode…

ANYWAY….

Then the opener at the bunker of 12x13 gives us another, standard case of ‘Dean is talking to Cas on the phone for an unspecified amount of time and when he comes near Sam ends the conversation with a perfunctory statement’

Which, you know I’m not going to make a big deal of, but they make a point of Dean walking in talking to Cas in exactly the same place that he then watches Gavin reunite with the woman he loves surrounded by a glowing light exactly one episode after Cas was all glowy. Just saying.

Then 12x15 gives us GOLD.

First of all the intentional double layering of Sam’s “I love you” to Mary and Dean’s closing his conversation with Cas. I loved how intentional this was, it was a clear exposition for me that TPTB are aware of this and playing on it for *reasons* that I hope will eventually come to fruition.

At the end of the episode Cas is in a difficult situation and Dean knows it, the whole “did he sound off you you?” - this is nowhere near the first time. Dean knows Cas but to be fair he also is a master at reading people generally so I take it as a little of one and a little of the other in these situations.

BUT I do love this moment:

Which is exactly the same reaction to the ‘honour bar’ moment in 9x18 - in both Dean looks aside at Sam in a way that insinuates he is holding something back due to Sam’s presence. Which ties into why he usually walks away from Sam or starts the conversation away from Sam where possible when he talks to Cas.

So I hope this answers your question - because basically yes, the phone call thing is just one of the many ways in which Dean holds back from whatever is happening with Cas because of his perception of Sam. Whether he needs to do this is another matter, but he does.

And as this is part of his facade that is being addressed this season I’m interested to see whether we might get more phone conversations with Cas in front of Sam moving forwards to show this alongside what I hope will be Dean being generally more open with his feelings.

The Only Omega

Summary: You were the only omega in your circle of friends and family of hunters, so when lost your parents, the alpha, Winchester brothers took you in.

Pairings: Alpha!Dean x Omega!Reader

Warnings: swearing, smut, typical a/b/o warnings, teeny bit of angst

Word Count: 3783

So I decided to try out the a/b/o dynamics. Also, this is soo long because I kept adding stuff and wrote this like a few weeks ago. Hope you guys like it!

(gifs not mine, credits to owners)

Being the only omega in your circle isn’t as pleasing as it sounds. You weren’t exactly locked up or anything, but you were more of a prized item, protected, and cherished. It’s also hard as you were a hunter. It was a danger especially when there are alphas involved, so you had to result to using scent blockers.

What’s the difference?? -이/가, -을/를, and -은/는

This is a topic that confuses a lot of people at the start, especially if they are coming from a language that, like English, does not make use of grammatical particles.

I guess I should start by explaining what exactly a grammatical particle is. Particles are grammatical elements that lack meaning of their own but impart meaning when connected with another word. When they are associated with another word, they give some sort of additional meaning to that word. Korean makes extensive use of particles, and today we’ll look at the three most common ones.

-이/가

The particle -이/가 (-이 for when the preceding word ends with a consonant and -가 for when the preceding word ends with a vowel) attaches directly to a noun and marks that noun as the grammatical subject of the sentence. If you aren’t familiar with that concept, the subject is the doer of verb, or the person or thing carrying out a certain state in the sentence. For example:

She is crying.

In this sentence, “she” is the one doing the action. “She” is the doer in this sentence, so it is the subject. Let’s look at another example:

The bag got dirty.

Being dirty isn’t exactly an action, but the thing in that state is the bag. English does not have any special element marking “she” or “bag” as the subjects of their respective sentences, but Korean does. Let’s translate the above sentences into Korean and make sure we mark the subjects.

She is crying. -> 그녀 울고 있어요.

Here, we attach -이/가 to the noun we want to mark as the subject. In this case, the noun is “그녀 (that lady).” Since it ends with a vowel, we choose -가 instead of -이.

The bag got dirty. -> 가방 더러워졌어요.

Since 가방 ends with a consonant, we use -이 as our subject particle.

Let’s check out some more examples of -이/가 usage:

  • 누가 왔어요? (Who came?)
    • NOTE: 누가 is the question word 누구 (who) + -이/가!
  • 휴지 없어요. (There is no toilet paper.)
  • 책상 위에 사과 있어요. (There is an apple on the table.)
  • 리모콘 안 돼요. (The remote doesn’t work.)

-을/를

Next, we have the direct object particle -을/를. Like the subject particle -이/가, it attaches to nouns. Use -을 when the noun ends with a consonant and -를 when the noun ends in a vowel. The direct object is the receiver of the action that the subject does. Let’s take a look:

I ate an apple.

Here, the apple is receiving the action of being eaten.

My younger brother often reads books.

In this case, the books are receiving the action of being read.

Let’s translate them to Korean!

I ate an apple -> 제가 사과 먹었어요.

You can see I used -를 since 사과 ends with a vowel. I also marked the subject with the subject particle -가.

My younger brother often reads books. -> 우리 동생은 책 많이 읽어요. (NOTE: In Korean, 우리 [our/we] is used to mean “my” when referring to family members.)

Since 책 ends with a consonant, I used -을. 동생 is the subject of the sentence, but I marked it with the topic particle, which we will see below.

Let’s finish up with a few more examples:

  • 미나가 잠 잘 잤어요. (Mina slept well.)
    • NOTE: In Korean, one says they “sleep a sleep (잠을 자다).” Similar verbs include “to dance (춤을 추다)” and “to dream (꿈을 꾸다).”
  • 민호 씨가 빵 먹어요. (Minho eats bread/ Minho is eating bread.)
    • NOTE: Simple present tense in Korean can be translated as either simple present or present progressive tense in English.

-은/는

And now we get to the hard part… -은/는! This particle sometimes pops up where you would expect to see the subject particle, and sometimes it shows up where you would expect to see the direct object particle. So, what exactly is this mysterious thing??

-은/는 is a topic particle, which means, among other things, that it is used to mark the topic, or focus, of the sentence. This usage often shows turns up when you want to introduce a new topic or change from one topic to another. Sometimes it helps to translate it as, “as for…”

Let’s look at some examples, using -은 when it attaches to a word ending with a consonant and -는 when it attaches to a word ending with a vowel.

  • 미국인이에요. ([As for me,] I’m an American.)
  • 그 배우 정말 유명해요. ([As for that actor,] That actor is really famous.)
  • 사과는 제가 가장 좋아하는 과일이에요. ([As for apples,] Apples are my favorite fruit.)

-은/는 can also be used for showing contrast betweenthings:

  • 민수 씨 사과를 싫어하지만 저는 사과를 좋아해요. (Minsu hates apples apples but I like apples.)
  • 서현 씨 키가 작은 반면에 서현 씨의 여동생 키가 커요. (Seohyeon is short; on the other hand, her younger sister is tall.)
    • NOTE how we have both the topic particle and subject particle in the same sentence!
  • 거의 아무거나 잘 먹는데 당근은 왜 안 먹어? (You eat almost anything well, but why don’t you eat carrots?)
    • We actually have two -은/는 here with different meanings. The first one is 너 + 는 (shortened to 넌) to mark that the speaker wants to focus on this particular person. The second, which we can find on 당근, emphasizes the contrast between the listener eating pretty much everything with the special exception of carrots.
    • Also notice that the topic particle on 당근 is replacing the direct object particle -을/를!

At the end of the day, the usage of -은/는 is one that is best grasped through exposure to native speech. The more Korean you hear, the more you’ll develop your intuition of when you should and shouldn’t use -은/는. However, I hoped this short section on it at least helps you to understand how it functions when you do happen across it.

Feel free to message me to ask any lingering questions you might still have. This is a fairly basic explanation of the usage of these three particles, but it should serve you well :) As always, happy studying~

Negative sentences

Ki’yo means “no” or “not.” It can turn any sentence into a negative:

  • Chipassä́ali - I am spanking you
  • Chipassä́ali ki’yo - I am not spanking you
  • Sashkaat malli - my mother jumps
  • Sashkaat malli ki’yo - my mother is not jumping
  • Chiholchifoat Shadow - my name is Shadow
  • Chiholchifoat Jim ki’yo - my name is not Jim

Notes:

  • ki’yo goes after the verb, but in identificational sentences it goes after the second noun

we’ve been getting a lot of questions (on anon, off anon, and direct messages), some of which are very similar, so we deiced to make a faq post:

if you don’t know what happened initially, you can read this post

can you fill me in on what has happened since then?

we have these three posts about it on the blog: i, ii, iii. the second link says that the case will be transferred to prosecution as a recommendation for indictment without detention. there is also other news regarding the accounts of the victim and the footage from the cctv inside the club. the victim now claims that onew touched her three times instead of twice (like she had previously said). the cctv in the club was not able to catch what was going on, but what it was able to catch did align with witness accounts.

what does it mean that the case will be handed to prosecution?

the case is essentially moving up to the next step in the criminal justice system. when someone is arrested a report is created that summarizes the events leading up to the arrest and details such as dates, times, location, etc. this report then gets handed over to prosecutors who will deicide to: file a complaint, go to a grand jury, or decide not to  pursue the case. it seems that at this point they are sending it to prosecution just as a formality.

what is indictment without detention?

indictment is a formal charge of accusation about a crime. indictment without detention: punishment without being held in prison/jail/whatever term you wanna use for it.

will the case being forwarded to prosecution extend the amount of time until the case is resolved?

it can, yes.

can onew be expected to make a statement himself?/do you have any idea when onew might make a public statement himself?

i would assume, given the subject of the case, that onew would make his own statement. given that he does make a statement, he would most likely give one when there is an official statement from the court.

will this situation cause shinee to disband?/will onew be dropped from shinee?

no, i don’t think this situation will cause shinee to disband. no, i don’t think onew will be dropped from shinee. there are numerous accounts of countless other k-celebrities (or celebrities in general) doing things like this (and worse) and they are still part of their groups, still have their jobs, etc.

will this affect “age of youth 2”?

there is no discussion about onew being removed from the show. at this point in filming it would be rather hard to change that. there is a production presentation scheduled for the drama on the 22nd and it is unknown if onew will attend or not. edit: onew has been dropped from the show.

is it true sm paid the girl to drop the charges?

it is illegal to do that in south korea for cases involving sexual maters, so no.
