trc character study [2/6]: ronan lynch

“They were silent through communion, as Noah remained in the pew and Declan limped up the aisle and accepted the host and Ronan closed his eyes to be blessed— please God what am I tell me what I am— and Matthew shook his head at the wine.

Linguistics in DGM

So I know I’ve seen it said somewhere that the exorcists would probably speak multiple languages (and by extension so would… pretty much everyone in the Order tbh).

I imagine it’s a bit of a headache if you’re a newcomer. The Order doesn’t really seem to think too much about its members unless they’re super important, after all, so I doubt they’d provide much by way of lessons.

So you get to the European headquarters and you’re just immediately bombarded with hundreds of languages. One man is shouting at another in German. A woman walks by, greeting you in Greek. And maybe you speak Spanish, but you’re not from Spain; you just transferred over from the North American branch and you can’t decide if the man speaking to you is using idioms from other languages or if that’s just slang in Spain or, hell, if it’s a slang term exclusive to the Order itself because the Order is just a huge blend of languages swirling together, so that could happen.

Please give me Lenalee speaking German or Russian—you know, one of those languages perceived as intimidating. Really, she’s being perfectly friendly, but you don’t understand what’s being said. Trust me, there’s nothing more intimidating than your German-speaking relative bellowing how pretty you are in German and you not understanding (although I highly doubt Lenalee’s going to be bellowing in German).

Please give me Allen trying to fluster some poor schmuck in a game so he just switches languages and starts speaking one of the Latin languages like Italian and it works because of course it does. It’s Allen for crying out loud. When that boy wants to charm you, he is going to charm you—even if it’s in another language.

And you can generally tell how long someone has been at the Order by how many languages they speak or even how garbled their accent is from picking up so many other different accents.

But wait, what about the Clan? Do we think about them? There’s literally thousands of years of memory stored there, guys. You can bet they speak lots of languages.

Sitting in on a dinner with the family might be fun; they might start speaking some ancient languages completely unknown to the world. Or maybe Bondomu starts shouting in an obscure, old dialect of Japanese.

Tyki answers in the same dialect and then looks confused because he most certainly doesn’t even know Japanese in the first place but Wisely just tells him that yes, that is a thing now.

But sometimes, sometimes when things get really serious, Adam will start speaking Hebrew and everyone will get very, very quiet, because that’s the language of the original scripture—Adam is speaking of the past, and their hearts ache when they think of what happened to them, what the Innocence did.

Inside, they pretended they would dream, but they did not. They sprawled on the living room sofa and Adam studied the tattoo that covered Ronan’s back: all the sharp edges that hooked wondrously and fearfully into each other.

It was a kiss Belle would never forget- better than any in all the books she had read. It was a kiss full of apology, full of thankfulness, and full of deep, deep love.

Holster and the Jewish Grudge

Ok so we all know that resident Nice Jewish Boy Adam Birkholtz has a lovely voice. He cultivated it in various choir groups throughout his adolescence, the most notable being the youth choir at his synagogue.

The youth choir consisted of young voices from third grade up to sixth grade, and they performed at temple functions and religious school events. The biggest event by far was the end of the year concert, where the entire school would gather on the last day to hear a set list of hits such as “The Hope”, “I am a Latke”, and many more peppy and religiously toned jams.

Because the Cantor who ran the youth choir had a love of musical theatre, some of the songs would be taken from her favorite shows. There was always “For Good” from Wicked, and the coveted “Seasons of Love” from Rent.

Now, every year it was tradition that a chosen 6th grade boy and 6th grade girl would each get a respective solo in the song. To sing the sixth grade solo was a right of passage coveted by any true songster in the choir, and Adam wanted it badly.

When the day came for the Cantor to choose solos for the end of the year concert, he was the only sixth grade boy, and according to anyone you’d ask, a shoe-in for the solo. But when the time came for Adam’s name to be announced, the Cantor said:

“And for the male solo for Seasons of Love, we’ll have… Jacob!”

Adam’s jaw dropped. That was his solo, but she just said Jacob? After rehearsal, Adam confronted the Cantor.

“Um, excuse me miss?” He said a little bashful, rubbing the back of his neck, “well, the Seasons of Love solo always goes to a sixth grade boy, and Jacob is in fifth grade? I’m a sixth grader and it’s my last year in choir. I would really like that solo.”

“Well,” the Cantor said, “That’s just show business.” She shrugged and left a dumbfounded Adam behind.

He couldn’t believe this! This was his moment and it was taken from him! Show business? They were 12 for crying out loud!

Adam’s bitterness followed him to the next rehearsal. They were practicing “Seasons of Love” and he couldn’t help to scowl thrown to Jacob. At the end of the song, where usually Joanne’s character riffs about love and remembrance, Adam decided to fill in for that roll, vocalizing “ooohhhh you got to you got to remember the looooove! Oooohh cause love is a gift from up abooove!”

He made eye contact with the Cantor, and could feel that he was in trouble.

After rehearsal she approached him, “Adam? What was that during practice?”

“Well, uh-”

“Because I loved it!” She smiled, “you know? You should do that for the concert!”

“Wait really?” He asked dumbfounded.

“Yes! It was beautiful, very original.”

“Well ok!” Adam smiled. If he couldn’t have the solo he wanted, what is better than having an unprecedented solo?

The day of the concert approached fast, and while the rest of the school was finishing their last lesson, the youth choir was setting up for the concert.

The Cantor had the stage hands place two microphones out for solos and one for the whole choir.

“Miss? When we do Season’s of Love, what mic should I use? There are only two mics for solos, but that song has three solos now.”

“Oh! Er- yes,” she looked around, “why don’t you stand in the front and center of the choir, and then when your turn comes up, step up to the choir mic!”

“Alright!” Adam beamed. His parents were going to be so proud.

By the time the show had started and gone on for a while, and it was time for his song, Adam was ready.

This was his time to shine!!

His part approached and he took half a step forward to the mic. He began to sing “ooohhhhh you got to you got to remember the love” but he couldn’t hear himself. He continued, “measure, measure your life in love~”

When they finished everyone was clapping, but something felt off.

The Cantor rushed over once the curtains closed, “oh I’m so sorry Adam, I guess that mic wasn’t on huh?”

“But you said-”

“Well,” she shrugged, “it’s just show business!”

She walked off stage and the curtains opened for their final bow. His family complimented him after, his mom squishing his cheeks, but something tasted sour in his mouth.

Did she really not like his voice that much? Was she so desperate to cling to any semblance of power that she would put down the dreams of 12 year old boy?

Those questions stayed with Adam for over a decade, and his grudge kept his viewing of Rent at bay (to his chagrin).

The summer after graduating from Samwell, Adam was offered a position at the Buffalo Performing Arts Center. Part of this position involved leading the casting of their productions.

It just so happened their fall musical was going to be Rent.

On the day they were calling for Mimi’s none other than his childhood Cantor showed up. She was very middle aged now, and her audition was laughable at best.

During his break he went out to the vending machine for a snack.

“Oh my god! Adam Birkholtz I knew I recognized you! What are you doing here? A summer job before college?”

“Actually, I just graduated from college ma'am.”

“Wow,” she said unaffected, “how time goes by.” She looked down at her feet, “so, do you think you have a chance?”

“You know I can’t tell you that.” He laughed.

“Well, come on! For your old choir instructor you can make an exception!” She looked weary.

“Between you and me, there have been some very good contenders.”

She looked down and frowned at that.

“Well don’t be sad Cantor,” Adam beamed, “it’s just show business.”!

Vampire AU

Heyy, Ammy again!

Soooo… a friend of mine just asked me to come up with a full-fledged vampire AU for DGM, and at first I was kinda like “….why tho.” And then I remembered that I know a lot about vampires, so I can create something pretty fun and unique.

Anywho! Here we go!

Background Info:
A vampire is a creature which survives by consuming the blood of a human. According to some myths around the world, they are also demons who, like any demon, can possess another body. However, unlike the dhampir, who can possess any human body, the vampire can only possess the body of a related dhampir, thus turning the dhampir into a full-fledged vampire.
A dhampir is the hybrid child of a vampire and a human. Dhampirs possess both human and vampiric characteristics. They, like any human, are alive and live regular, mortal lifespans, but, upon death, will find a new host body to possess.

Black Order:

  • Black priests/exorcists are vampire hunters
  • Most of them are people whose families were wiped out by vampires
    • One exception is Krory, who is himself a dhampir coming from a line of dhampirs who have borne a grudge against the Clan
    • The Order stumbled across Krory and Eliade living alone and went to take care of him. Krory struck a deal with the Order; if they let him live, he’d help them with the Clan
  • Each is given a magical weapon which molds itself to their individual needs
  • The reason for the silver in the exorcist uniforms comes from the notion that vampires are weak to silver. (This is, of course, eventually disproven by Tyki’s avid collection of silver buttons from their uniforms)
    • Which is why the amount of silver in the uniform is eventually reduced and replaced with red trim
  • Lavi and Bookman are not, in fact, vampire hunters, at least not primarily. They retain their roles as neutral parties who observe history. But, since they’re there, they help out (kind of have to, ‘cause it sucks to be observing and then all of a sudden you have an angry, hungry vampire rushing at you)
  • The Black Order will deal with just about any vampire they come across, of course, but their primary enemy is the Clan of Noah

Clan of Noah:

  • A group of twelve reincarnating dhampirs and a full-fledged vampire called the Millennium Earl
  • Of course, the Millennium Earl is their father
  • No one knows how Adam became a vampire, only that he’s both the oldest and most powerful known vampire
  • He and his family have been around for millennia
  • The dhampirs have been reincarnating, but Adam has never changed or disappeared (well, until recently)
  • The Clan is easily one of the most influential groups of vampires in existence

  • Ghouls are what happens when a vampire or dhampir kills a human without the intent of turning them. Ghouls have to obey the ones who created them
  • However, “akuma" is a term applied only to ghouls created by the Clan of Noah
  • Adam alters the Clan’s ghouls using magic, creating bizarre monstrosities that seem to mutate and evolve the more they consume
    • The Order has taken to categorizing them by level, 1-3, and recently even 4
    • Level 1 akuma tend to look more like regular ghouls (reanimated, mindless corpses), only they’re a little harder to kill
    • Subsequent levels look less like corpses, instead taking on more varied forms at level 2 and then becoming more and more uniform after that
  • This alteration is done by tying the human’s soul to the corpse, trapping it

Allen Walker:

  • Allen is the adopted son of Mana Walker
  • Mana and Allen were attacked by a vampire, and Mana was killed and turned into a ghoul in the attack, and turned and attacked Allen, blinding him in one eye and severing one of his arms
  • Allen manages to get away, and is soon discovered by Cross, who takes him on as an apprentice
    • While with Cross, he receives his weapon, which replaces his severed arm and “repairs” his damaged eye, allowing him to see what exactly Adam has done to the Clan’s ghouls
  • Recently discovered that he is the new host body for the dhampir, Nea D. Campbell

The Campbells:

  • Mana and Nea are the first dhampirs to be born to the Clan in several millennia
  • They are the children of Adam and Katerina Campbell
  • Shortly after the twins are conceived, Adam disappears
    • As luck would have it, someone finally managed to kill Adam, albeit because he had let his guard down. This individual was tracked down and killed by the Clan, who then went into hiding while they tried to figure out what to do without Adam
  • Mana and Nea grew up as normal, human children, but eventually began to show signs of vampirism and join the Clan
    • Simultaneously, Mana starts to change, seeming to lose his sense of self
  • Nea decides to take action to save Mana, and proceeds to rebel in an attempt to force Adam to take possession of himself instead
    • He manages to kill most of the Clan, save only Road and Mana/Adam, before Mana/Adam kills him
  • Nea takes Allen Walker, his nephew, as a host
  • Mana Walker did not actually become a ghoul, or only temporarily became one. Nea hasn’t quite figured out what actually happened yet. He just knows it’s not possible for a vampire or dhampir to truly become a ghoul

Inside, they pretended they would dream, but they did not. They sprawled on the living room sofa and Adam studied the tattoo that covered Ronan’s back: all the sharp edges that hooked wondrously and fearfully into each other.
