study abroad 2010

Ahh where are you going in Japan? How long? I studied abroad there in 2010 and got to go all over -- Hiroshima, Tokyo, Kamakura, Mt. Fuji, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Himeji... I have so many places I'd recommend seeing!

We’re flying into Tokyo, but I don’t think we’re going to spend more than 1-2 days there before going to Kyoto. I’m really excited about Kyoto.

After that, we’re not 100% sure. Our trip is only about 10 days long, and we haven’t booked our hotels or train tickets yet. (We’re going to get a JR Pass, I think.) We might stay in Kyoto for 2-3 days, and then spend another 2-3 in Osaka, which is the city we’re flying home from. I’m looking forward to the food culture in Osaka.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!! We have a few friends from college living in Japan that we’re looking forward to seeing. We’re going to get them to show us around on a few of the nights.

(Is it silly that I’m hoping the YOI movie is out by April 2018? How amazing would it be if I could see it in Japan?)

I am really curios if Tao every went abroad for study in 2010? I checked and there is no evidence that he did but maybe i have missed something?

I’m 100% sure that Tao didn’t go abroad to study in 2010. I don’t think he had the grades to go abroad and his family didn’t have the money. It’s the opposite actually. From what I can gather from his old weibo posts, he probably finished school and didn’t enter college in favor of starting to work in 2009 (as a waiter and at Starbucks at some point, apparently). This would make him 16 at that time. He did this to earn money for his family and would always feel very happy and proud when he could buy things for his parents.

“Money, money, money! Keep up the good work!” May, 2009

“I earned a handbag for my mother and a pen for my dad. So happy!” Feb, 2010

I think the waiter thing wasn’t his thing after all though.

“Yeah, I’m only a waiter now. Haha, fighting! Dad, thanks for everything you’ve done for me, I love you guys.” Dec, 2009

“I’m in love with the job of a waiter.” Dec, 2009

“I’m not suited to be a waiter. Time to find a new job.” Dec, 2009

It looks like he also got injured in late 2009. This seems to be reason he stopped practicing wushu for a while.

“It’s always bleeding; what the heck is that? I don’t really want to give up… Hold on!” August, 2009

It was around this time (late 2009) that he realised he wanted to be a musician, so he started writing songs and practicing his singing and rapping. He participated in DJ, wushu and free-style rap competitions and won six awards over time. He also stopped practicing wushu altogether, apparently, to concentrate on singing and song writing.

He even tried to start his own band.

“Edison Huang, people who like Rap and R&B or can sing, please let me know at 135*******. Text me.” Jan, 2010

I guess his parents and friends supported his ambitions, but it also seems like he got a lot of backlash from people and often posted depressed words or things to motivate himself.

“Life that doesn’t sail smoothly is the real life, life in which one is fighting against the harsh winds and waves is the most glorious life, no matter how the ending is.” Oct, 2009

“Without consideration of my family, I’m the guy that has nothing but his dream.” Sep, 2010

“The more you may feel like giving up, the more you can’t do that. Think through your past, Huang Zi Tao; please never, never do that.” Nov, 2010

I think his wushu master (i.e. teacher) died around November 2010 and he felt very depressed about this. I’m pretty sure that he was very close to his master even when he wasn’t actually practicing wushu.

“Master, today when I was sitting on the edge of your bed, I felt very sad.” Nov, 2010

I really cherish the moments we spent together.” Nov, 2010

He did go to Taipei for a little bit apparently, but that definitely wasn’t to study. He probably travelled around for short vacations, but that’s all the “going abroad” he did before entering S.M.

Taipei is so beautiful!” April, 2010

I think he was cast into S.M. in late 2010 or early 2011, since the next things he posted were these:

“Dad, our dream definitely could come true. Mom, whatever you want, I’ll buy it for you!” Jan, 2010

“I won’t stop even if my throat bleeds and I dance till my feet run with pus.” Jan, 2010

“Father and mother, I miss you so much.” March, 2010

“There are many happy memories in Qing Dao. Well, let’s lose weight!” July, 2011

“This shabby room is full of our dreams, yeah!” Aug, 2011

He was obviously a trainee in S.M. at this time and was put into a group with the other EXO members.

So to summarise my answer: No, Tao didn’t go abroad to study in 2010. He probably left China to go on vacations, but he stayed with his parents for most of the time.

(P.S. I am so sorry for the long answer btw. Once I started researching I just had to share all the stuff I found)
