One of my friends from school was kidnapped this week by ICE
Cal State Los Angeles student Claudia Rueda taken by ICE this morning. Please mobilize and spread the word #FreeClaudia
“Early this morning, Border Patrol conducted a raid in Boyle Heights kidnapping Claudia Rueda outside her home in Boyle Heights, immigrant rights organizer with the Los Angeles Immigrant Youth Coalition and student at Cal State Los Angeles. Claudia most recently lead a campaign to free her mom, Teresa, from ICE detention after Border Patrol agents similarly kidnapped Teresa from their home.
When the officials showed up this morning, family members knew not to open the door since the agents couldn’t produce a warrant. But they got to Claudia anyway while she was outside moving the family’s car. For several hours her family had no idea where she was.
Claudia has lived in the US nearly her entire life. She participated in college-prep programs, was a student at UC Santa Cruz, and transferred to Cal State LA where she is currently studying Latin American Studies and has the support of many professors and campus organizations.Claudia has been preparing for apply for DACA but had been unable to gather the money for the filing fees.
Claudia’s best friend states: “Claudia is an extremely supportive, empowering, and hard working friend. All throughout high school, she encouraged students to continue their studies in higher education, becoming involved in afterschool programs like ESCALERA. Throughout our college career, she has continuously supported me, offered her home, and her wisdom to continue being a hardworking student and following our passions.”
Call Border Patrol in Chula Vista at 619-498-9750 to demand DHS not initiate removal proceedings and release Claudia to let her apply for DACA and get back to her family and completing finals.
“Hi, my name is ________________, and I am a concerned community member calling in support of Claudia Sarahi Rueda Vidal, DOB: 1/15/95, a DACA eligible youth, college student and beloved community member from Boyle Heights. Claudia has been a mentor in the community to other youth and has long fought for justice for others. I demand that Border Patrol release her to her family and community to let her apply for DACA with USCIS.”
FIGHT DEPORTATIONS BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!
FIGHT ICE WITH FIRE!
*** this is a copy and paste from her group’s Facebook. Claudia was head of a group of people that collaborated with my MSA and BLACK student union as well as the transgender rights/undocumented students group TRUCHA at our school. This is clearly a targeted attack because of her activism. I desperately need everyone’s help in trying to free her.
A Republican Oklahoma lawmaker is being hotly criticized after proposing the state cut spending by rounding up its 82,000 non-English-speaking students and turning them over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Republican Rep. Mike Ritze is also being criticized by members of his own party for suggesting Oklahoma isn’t obligated to provide an education to undocumented immigrants.
The state is facing a $900 million budget gap and Ritze told local CBS affiliate KWTV that turning the kids over to ICE could save $60 million.
“Identify them and then turn them over to ICE to see if they truly are citizens,” Ritze said in a Wednesday news segment, adding, “Do we have to really educate non-citizens?” Actually, yes, you do.
In its 1982 Plyler v. Doe decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled states can’t deny students a free public education based on their immigration status, according to the Washington Post. Read more (5/12/17)

4.25.17 Another Day, Another Paper (72/100 days of productivity)
Four papers down, three more to go! Today my friends and I discovered a study lounge in one of the buildings on campus. We were originally told it was for commuter students, but I didn’t see the word commuter on the sign :) Right now I’m working on my Junior Seminar final, analyzing marginalia I made from the first three science fiction books I ever read. This is one of my easier papers. I can’t wait to be finished, because I’ve had papers due back to back since Friday. After this, my next paper isn’t due until Thursday, which means I won’t have to spend Wednesday cramming!
Victor and Yuuri are ABSOLUTELY buying a little house in Hasetsu and living there once Victor retires (he can train just Yuuri in Japan, after all!). St. Petersburg is lovely, but Hasetsu is heaven on earth and Victor has so clearly started think of it as a home (the seagulls)?? The Katsukis are family even after just eight months, imagine what they’ll be like after a couple of years.
The house is near the beach and Yuuri has a small garden in the little backyard, which he finds really soothing and calming. Victor’s Japanese has become excellent by now, and Yuuri is very proud of him.
They have their poodle(s) of course, but they also have a cat that Yurio gifted them at one point, and Makkachin treats it like its his own puppy.
They’re going to help revitalize the town. Victor is going to coach at the new and improved Ice Castle which will be so popular due to Victor’s coaching and due to the fact that it was the home rink of Japan’s now five time world champion and Olympic gold medalist Katsuki Yuuri, that they actually have to expand it.
They add a second rink just for training, and the rink building is named after Yuuri of course, which he finds embarrassing (but he came to the opening, cut the ribbon, and performed a special exhibition for it anyway).
Victor just coaches Yuuri while Yuuri is still skating competitively (though Yurio comes and stays for part of the summer and Victor helps him out then), but when Yuuri retires he takes on other students.
Yuuri teaches children to skate in his free time, but coaching older skaters isn’t really his thing and he goes into sports psychology with a focus on helping figure skaters. He doesn’t want skaters to go through what he did. He wants to learn how to be able to be there for them. He and Victor’s careers go hand in hand, and he’s at the rink at least part of the day most days anyway because he loves skating (and seeing Victor) so much. He’s very close to all of Victor’s students.
They both travel for ice shows for YEARS when they get the chance/are invited, because they love it. There are pro skaters still doing ice shows at fifty years old. That will be these two. And they never fail to make sure at least one of their programs is a duet.
When Victor travels for coaching, Yuuri tends to go with him a) because he’s willing to be very hands on in his job as a sports psychologist so often he’ll already be going to help an athlete competing anyway, even if it’s not Victor’s student. b) because Victor’s students really like Yuuri and like having him there. c) sometimes Yuuri’s agreed to be on location to do some light coverage/make a few appearances for the Japanese broadcasters anyway, although he doesn’t do program/event commentating because he doesn’t feel comfortable with near that much talking d) they literally never get tired of traveling together.
They are in permanent honeymoon phase, and everyone who has ever spent more than two seconds with them knows this.
