more unconventional study tips

- if you drank coffee while revising, drink coffee before the exam. if you didn’t, don’t

- listen to one type of music (genre/artist) while revising a certain topic, listen to that music on your way to the exam

- wear the same colour nail polish/perfume when revising and when you’re in the exam

- keep your sleep schedule the same. try to get 8 hours while revising and also the night before the exam. don’t stay up cramming and exhaust yourself

- it’s better to do one hour every day in the week leading up to the exam than 7 hours in one day the day before

these tips can help trigger your memory, they sound weird but they really do work

Do you think it's kinda weird that even though the characters in Villainous don't TECHNICALLY have good designs, while that kind of thing destroys other cartoons, in this one, it seems to work in its favor? STRAP IN FOLKS IT’S TIME FOR ANOTHER RANT LESSON ABOUT ANIMATION CHARACTER DESIGN WITH NOVA (brought to you by SCAD: “I pay $35,000 a year to learn how to make cartoons so trust me I know what I’m talking about”)

The first thing any character design class (including the one I took) will teach you is “have a strong silhouette”

You can probably recognize almost if not every single one of these characters just from their outlines! So let’s take a look at the silhouettes of the Villainous cast…

HOLY SMOKES THEY ARE HELLA DISTINCTIVE!!! And here we even see what is probably the design reason for Dr. Flug’s paper bag and Demencia’s huge fluffy ponytail - they add to the strength of their silhouettes immensely.

Now let’s examine both the shape language of the characters AND how they’re likely divided in terms of their digital puppet rigs (as Villainous appears to use both the hand drawn and rigging techniques), because the former is the second thing any character design class will teach you and the latter is incredibly important to the modern digital 2D animation process. (Apologies if my rig estimates are off, I haven’t had as much experience with 2D rigging as I have with hand drawn.)

Black Hat has the most variety out of the cast, but broken up he’s really just a combination of rectangles, triangles and one or two circles. His hat is also kind of a shape in and of itself, one that comes very naturally when drawing his head. Like a lot of villain characters his sharpness is highly emphasized.

Dr. Flug is ALL about squares and skinny rectangles, with his only rounded shapes being his eyes and shoes. Normally when you see boxy characters they’re on the very masculine or muscular side, meant to seem strong or imposing, but Flug is a wimpy, scrawny twig. That’s really unorthodox and something I like a lot about his look.

What’s super interesting about Demencia is that next to 5.0.5, she has the most circles and rounded shapes. Sharpness is added in her details which makes her design look a lot more complex than it really is. What’s great about digital animation and 2D rigging is it makes characters who have a lot of specific details like her much simpler to animate, so she really isn’t impractical at all provided you’re animating her using a computer.

And finally we have Beariplier Markibear 5.0.5, who I’m sure surprises no one by being a big old round baby full of circles. His nose and snout are of course triangles though. I like how he’s the most intentionally simple out of the cast, even going so far as to have a different eye style that almost makes him look like something out of an ultra-cutesy anime. He doesn’t fit in with and stands out a lot from the others, which is entirely the point.

To sum up, the Villainous characters are both simple enough to animate on a budget/deadline and interesting looking enough to want to watch, the perfect combination for modern 2D digital TV animation. These designs were MADE for a 2017 Cartoon Network show in every sense, with just enough early 2000s influence to feel fresh and new as well as classic and nostalgic. I want these guys to represent and become iconic of CN the same way Finn, Jake, Mordecai and Rigby have.

for a lot of us, it seems nearly impossible to find a balance between our grades and our health. i’ve created a list of tips and resources for managing classwork as well as mental illness. i tried to be inclusive of depression and anxiety as well as other disorders like adhd and bipolar. (i’d like to be more inclusive of others, but i couldn’t find a lot of resources and wasn’t sure what would help aaaa)

please let me know if you have anything to add, and i hope this post can help you out in some way c:

while studying

  • create a routine, and do your best to stick to it. having a consistent schedule can be a struggle, especially when dealing with long days of class or difficulties with sleep. try something more open-ended and flexible if you can’t manage specific times. (studying for an hour in the morning and before bed vs studying at 8 am and 10 pm)
  • start with your favourite subject. there are a lot of suggestions on how to start a study session (and they usually conflict it seems), but i’ve found that this works best for me. your favourite subject may be easy or difficult, but by starting with it, you get in the groove of studying and won’t get burnt out as quickly, giving you more energy to do your other work.
  • don’t take on more than what you can handle. if you’re feeling motivated, great! get as much done as you can! but on the bad days, just do what you can. there are times where it seems nearly impossible to get anything done, but still try to make the most out of each day and do what you’re able to so you don’t fall far behind. do what you can, when you can. don’t overwork yourself so much.

during class

  • take notes. for me, the easiest way to lose track during a class is if i don’t write or doodle. even if the material doesn’t seem important, write it down! it may be useful later, and it’ll keep your mind from wandering during lecture. (that being said, don’t always write things exactly as the teacher says; putting it into your own words can make it easier to remember and understand)
  • record lecture audio. if you can’t copy everything down in time, or if for whatever reason you need to know something verbatim, then you’ll have something to listen to again later.
  • take pics of what the instructor writes on the board. similar to the above tip, you can refer back to the pictures you took. just don’t forget about them! write yourself a note or make an alarm on your phone to remind you that there’s more material to review. don’t be the kid who takes pictures during the whole lecture but never writes anything, that kid’s obnoxious and gets bad grades
  • stay focused. i fidget a lot with my hands and feet, especially during a long lecture or study session. i find that keeping my hand on my pen/pencil is the simplest way to keep my mind on track, but fidget toys may help you as well. most teachers and students are fine with it as long as it’s not too disruptive.

at home

  • keep track of medication. ngl i am suuuper forgetful when it comes to medication :’) if you’re forgetful too, leave yourself as many reminders as you can. set alarms, write notes, or have someone else keep you accountable if you’re living with a parent or roommate. having routine helps here as well, especially if you take meds multiple times a day.
  • communicate regularly with your doctor. if you’re living away from home, or just a busy student, it can be particularly difficult to make appointments. but you should still make an effort to email your doctor, therapist, etc. at least once a month, and more often if you’re currently changing or adjusting medications.
  • “catching up” on sleep is a myth. depriving yourself of sleep during the week and then sleeping in on the weekends won’t fix your sleep schedule, sadly. keep it consistent if you can. even if you’re staying up late and sleeping in, try to get at least 7-8 hours. whether it’s 12-8 am or 2-10 am, it’s a reasonable amount for getting through the day. sleeping too little can leave you tired and grumpy in the morning, but sleeping too much can also leave you groggy, sluggish, and unproductive for the rest of the day.
  • eat something healthy. okay, no one can eat healthy all the time, and i don’t expect you to. i certainly don’t expect myself to lol. but we can still find a healthy snack or meal to make a part of our lives. sometimes fruit is the best comfort food tbh. here are a few simple snacks that you could try, for studying or for whatever else. i personally enjoy anything with berries, especially yogurt parfait or oatmeal.
  • have a support system. it helps so much to have someone you can talk to when you’re not feeling well or in need of encouragement. it can be a friend, a parent, a sibling, your significant other, or even other members of the studyblr community! (if you don’t have anyone to talk to, please talk to me!! i am here for you my friendo)

other stuff

  • community college by @universi-tea - if you’re worried about moving into dorms or away from home (or are simply unable to), i strongly encourage you to try out community college. it’s made schooling much more enjoyable and accessible for me and i think everyone should give it a chance. plus it’s waaay cheaper.
    • also, most (if not all) U.S. schools have a disability services department; this applies to both physical and mental illnesses. talking to them for the first time can be nerve-wracking, but in the long run it’s completely worth it. teachers and staff want to help you! but you have to help yourself a lil bit too. accommodations may include leniency about attendance and deadlines, or they may let you take exams on earlier or later dates with fewer students present. the flexibility with deadlines has saved my ass more than once tbh
  • things to do when things don’t feel right by @affectionsuggestions - sometimes it’s okay to just do small things, and sometimes it’s okay to not do anything at all.
  • ways to start feeling again by @urbanthropologie - similar to above, but with a focus on mindfulness (helps with anxiety, dissociation, etc)
  • my mental illness tag - this has many other resources that are otherwise not listed in this post.
  • my printables tag! - printables are great for when you’re too tired or not sure how to write things out completely by hand. there are some planners and calendars as well as gratitude logs, habit trackers, etc.

I was having dinner in the Kirkland dining hall with Mark, and I had the chicken with me because I had to have the chicken with me at all times. This was college. And the dining hall was serving chicken for dinner and I had to feed my chicken, so I… Well, I took little pieces of chicken and I gave it to the chicken. Someone must have seen me because the next thing I knew, I was being accused of forced cannibalism. 

hello friends!!

This list is more so about things that I didn’t realize I needed for college, and what I realized I didn’t need once I was already at college, rather than a wholistic list of what you’re going to need. If you google your generic “college essentials” list, they more or less are truly what you’re going to need. I’m simply trying to share my experience after my first year of college. here we go kids

Things you might not have thought of:

wedge pillow/husband pillow: you know when you wanna do work in bed and sit up against the wall, and you try and use your pillows for back support but you can never get them in a comfortable position???? yeah. fear not!! there are wedge pillows and/or husband pillows for this!!! personally, I didn’t realize how much work I would do in bed prior to college. If you’re someone who does this, I HIGHLY recommend getting one of these pillows. it’ll just make your life a lot easier.

clipboard: you know when you wanna do work in bed, but when you’re trying to take notes and be studious your notebook is too floppy and it’s an immense struggle to take notes???? yeah. GET YOU A CLIPBOARD. my god. you could also get a lap desk thing, but tbh a clipboard should suffice.

clip-on lamp: if you’re like me, you might hate artificial lighting and hate having all of the lights on. you might prefer a nice lil lamp. every college list tells you to get a desk lamp. BUT YOU SHOULD GET A CLIP ON LAMP. as i’ve said twice now, i love doing work in bed. but sometimes it just gets dark!! and while your lamp lights up the room well enough, you might strain to see what you’re reading and/or writing. so, get a clip on lamp!! you can clip it literally anywhere it can clamp on to. so much freedom. so beautiful. 10/10 would recommend.

a robe: i went into college thinking i could just wrap myself in a towel and flee to my dorm from the bathroom. However, you’re gonna dry your hair, and then your body. and then you’ll go on your journey to your dorm. but, you’re hair is still gonna be wet, and then get you wet, and get the floor wet, and it’s just not a good time. (also sorry for the comma splices rn lmao) please make your life easier and get yourself a robe. then you can wrap the towel around your hair and keep it dry, while not having to run to your dorm hoping that your towel doesn’t fall! it’s a good time.

stand up hamper: i got a laundry bag and thought that would be a fun way to store my gross clothing. false information my friends. you know when you’re trying to put something in a bag, but the bag just keeps closing on it’s own bc of gravity, and then you’re trying to open the bag with the object you’re trying to put IN the bag–you know what i’m talking about. that’s what will happen with a laundry bag for a hamper. just get a stand up one friends.

NAPKINS: it’s the things that you always have around that you don’t realize you need. just have napkins. too many reasons to explain why they’re necessary.

a step stool!!!: this is college. your bed is going to be high up. that’s just how it is. you CAN rely on the lil ladder to get onto your bed, but that’s always a bit of an awkward climb. i highly recommend a step stool. it helped my tiny lil self out every single day.

mattress pad: this one isn’t necessary. I didn’t have one when I first got to college. but then my mom forced one upon me, and it honestly changed my whole life. do it. you don’t need a full on foam top mattress (unless you want one that’s cool too), but anything helps. college beds feel like dried up sponges.

Things you probably don’t need

clothes: no matter what, you are not going to have the amount of clothes that you need your first year of college. you will either over pack or under pack. there is absolutely no in between. try not to bring too many clothes. you will truly thank yourself.

extra storage bins: if you think you might need extra storage bins to put all of your stuff in, then you’re bringing too much stuff to your dorm. trust me. the storage that your school provides will be enough. don’t bring too much to school. you’ll have many breakdowns where you get so overwhelmed by all of the unnecessary crap that you own. i know i did

too many pillows: y’all, this is college. no one has time for five decorative pillows. the bed is just big enough to fit one human being. don’t bring all of those pillows. you will have no where to put them. your dorm will be cute without the pillows.

shower shoes??????: idk. this, in my opinion, is optional. i feel like everyone stresses how disgusting college showers are and how if you don’t have shower shoes you’re bound to get foot fungus. i personally think this is exaggerated and emphasized by germaphobes. shower shoes are a nice precaution, but your showers aren’t going to be completely horrible. However, I go to a tiny liberal arts school, and shared a bathroom with 4 other girls. If you’re going to a larger school with community bathrooms, then please disregard this suggestion. protect ur toes.

i hope this helps some people out!! freshman year of college is going to be a great learning experience!!!!!
