streptopelia risoria

What is/is there a difference between pigeons and doves?

Yes, and no.

They are both in the family Columbidae with no taconomixal difference.

Pigeon is the term specifying big, bulky birds, but Dove is the technically correct catch all.

What most of us call Pigeons are domesticated Rock Doves, native to Turkey and neighboring parts of the middle east.

Domesticated pigeons are about as far removed as dogs from wild wolves.

When I refer to pigeons and doves, I mean specifically Columba livia and Streptopelia risoria, between which physical and mental differences are pretty drastic.

I have recently added a pair of Diamond doves (Geopelia cuneata) to my flock, but specify “my diamonds” when discussing them.
