Let’s Go (The Two Of Us Together) - Nite Jewel

This week was a mellow night in the studio… EXCEPT for some feelings that I was having about whiteness and violence / terror, which isn’t unusual for us SQR DJS. We, if the night is right, find ourselves unloading our feelings around gender, sex, race, etc. Sometimes more articulately and other times stumbling over our booze-induced rage-filled words. Anyway - I talked about how good it felt to yell in a white man with dreads face “you are a white supremacist!” after  he refused to cut his hair. This is a long story [i told it all on air]… but he really proved himself to be a misogynist, and racist, in so many ways, so we (a group of people of mix genders and races) verbally attacked him, and it felt wonderful. I talked about how it can be scary or feel like a chore to confront cis-hetero white men, or any person engaging in violence, but with enough practice and support, its become easier. How can we make it even more so? I finished off with explaining that I am not asking a lot by asking you to stop patronizing me, stop humiliating me, stop hurting me, stop capitalizing on me. This is NOT ASKING A LOT. I HAVE NOT COME A LONG WAY AND “NEED TO CHILL.” I WILL NOT BE SATISFIED WITH THIS EMPIRE OF OPPRESSION I STILL HAVE TO SURVIVE EVERY FUCKING DAY. And face it, if you are cis. straight. white. male. rich. physically able-bodied. you DO NOT KNOW what it means to be a target of hatred, contempt, and violence. I shouldn’t need to stop saying these things. I don’t care if it seems redundant to you, or not fun. Systematic oppression is redundant and NOT FUN.

it was a good night anyway, and it feels good to have this space to tell these stories, and listen to good music. -DJA

Okay so strawberry from 997 Now (San Francisco Bay Area) (@STRAWBERRYradio on Twitter) was on periscope while playing the song, and he said, and I (paraphrase) QUOTE “what you guys are doing is incredible. Don’t let this stop here, keep tweeting us. I like that song, the labels not really gonna promote it, but you guys are awesome.” KEEP GOING. We’re doing an incredible thing here.

“Y/n…babygirl…, wake up.” My eyes slowly cracked open at the sound of Nate’s voice, his face close to mine. Slowly I turned my head to the side to see Nate, completely dressed. “Good morning beautiful.” he smiled as he brushed a piece of hair out of my eye.

“Are you going somewhere?” I questioned, my voice still groggy.

“Nah…, we’re going somewhere.” he smirked. I sat up against my headboard, looking over at him.

“What? Where?” I wiped away from the sleep from eyes before focusing on Nate. But he just sent me a smile, standing up and walking to the door.

“Just get dressed babe, you’ll see soon.” he spoke before heading out, closing the door. I stared at the back of the door, my eyebrows furrowing in confusion as I tried to guess as to where we were going but I knew even if I asked again Nate wouldn’t crack. So I got up from my bed and made my way into the shower.

Once finished I changed into some clothes and headed out of my room, making sure to grab my purse on the way out.

“Nate?” I called out, walking down the stairs quietly just in-case any of the other girls were still asleep.

“In here baby.” He shouted. I quickly rounded the corner and saw him standing by the front door. I let a small sigh out before quietly walking over to him.

“Even though I know you won’t tell me, where are you taking me?” I questioned, fixing the strap of my bag.

“Not telling Y/n.” Nate smirked before opening the door and heading out. I let out a loud groan before following him out into the sunshine.

“We taking mine or your’s?” I shouted, placing my pair of sunglasses on and watching as he walked over to the four cars parked in front of the garage.

“Mine.” He called before unlocking the doors. I nodded before hurrying over to the black suv and hopping in.

“Ready lil’ mama?” Nate smiled as he turned to look at me. I couldn’t help but smile as I stared into his eyes. Nate always made me feel happy.

“I mean, I guess I’m up for anything if it’s with you.” I beamed as I pulled out my phone. I watched as Nate bowed his head for a second, like he was trying to hide something, but he recomposed himself and started up the car.

“Gosh it’s like 3000 degrees out here!” I shouted, rolling down the window and fanning myself furiously.

“Y/n it’s only 75.” Nate spoke turning the radio down a bit.

“It’s that hot?! OH MY GOD I’M GONNA DIE!” I shouted, throwing myself on to his shoulder. Nate let out a loud chuckle trying to keep his eyes on the road.

“Well don’t worry, where we’re going I’m pretty sure there’ll be air conditioning.” Nate reassured, patting my leg. I let out a sigh, resting up against the head of the passenger seat. Nate still wouldn’t tell me where we were going and it honestly upset me, in a funny way though. So to make up for it he bought me Starbucks.

“Are we almost there?” I mumbled sipping on my strawberry frappuccino turning the radio up as I heard a familiar song begin to play.

“Yeah babygirl, just 5 more minutes.” he turned left causing me to lean into his side. Today I actually wanted to just stay inside with my friends and just lay around, but it felt good to be outside, especially with Nate.

Finally we pulled up to a very large glass building with Main Top Inc printed on top. My eyes gazed over to Nate, staring at him curiously. But he ignored my stare, pulling into one of the many parking spots that weren’t taken by Ferrari’s and Bentley’s.

We both hopped out of the car, beginning to walk when I immediately stopped my jaw dropping.

“Holy shit,”

“What?” Nate asked, turning back to look at me. I lifted my finger, pointing at the beautiful masterpiece.

“Is that a 2015 Rolls-Royce ghost?!” I gaped, trying to hold back my squeals as I stared at it. Nate laughed silently from behind me but I wasn’t joking. That baby was gorgeous. As I started walking towards it another machine caught my eye. “Holy-, a Porsche 918 Spyder?! Nate who the fuck are you hanging out with?!” I screeched, turning to look him.

“You are just like your dad babe.” He chuckled as he shook his head at me.

“One of the only things we have in common with each other. Our love for cars.” I spoke, still mesmerized by the beauty.

“Alright alright, c’mon we’re gonna be late.” Nate chuckled, grabbing my hand and pulling me away. I let out a sigh before slightly pouting.

As soon as we walked in, a cool breeze smacked me right in the face causing me to let out a sigh of relief. Maybe Nate didn’t think it was hot, but I was burning up.

We quietly approached the front desk, a lady with a headset on who sat in front of like 5 computers sat waiting for us. She had long brown hair and big lips, and I could see her figure 8 body from here, making me feel a little self-conscious. Her flickered upwards and a small smile fell on her lips.

“Welcome to Main Top Incorporated, how may I help you?”

“Oh c’mon Lacie, don’t speak all that proper bullshit to me.” Nate smiled causing the lady (now known as Lacie) to smile back. It was obvious that Nate had been here before, but it was also extremely obvious that this Lacie chick had a thing for Nate. But it would’ve been ridiculous of me to cause some sort of scene over any form of jealousy, especially when there wasn’t a need for one.

“Good to see you Nate,” She beamed and then she looked up at me, “Who’s your friend?” There was something about the way she said that made me cringe. Nate’s grip on my hand tightened before he turned to face me a goofy grin covering his face.

“This is Y/n Y/l. She’s a good friend of mine.” I could feel my chest tighten before I looked down at my shoes, a blush spreading over my cheeks.

“Wait, y/f/n as in y/f/n?” My eyebrows furrowed together as I looked back up at her. But then I realized as to why she said my name..,twice.

“Yes, but we keep it quiet please.” I spoke, the first time since I walked in here. She nodded her head rapidly before look down at her desk.

“Uhm, I’ll just need you two to sign in.”

After all of that we quickly headed into the elevator up to the 25th floor. It let out a pathetic ding before we got out, heading down the hall in hurry because apparently we had time slot here.

Nate pushed open the last door at the end of the hall, revealing a large official looking office with huge windows and a desk sitting in front of them.

“Skate!” We both turned our heads to see a guy with headphones around his neck and a drink in his hand. “C’mon bro let’s get to work!” He called before heading back into the mysterious doorway, reminding me of Narnia.

I turned to look up at Nate and he grabbed my hand, nodding reassuringly and pulling us into the door.

It was a recording booth, kinda small but it was nice. The guy sat at the in front of the mixing console and another guy sat in a black chair beside him, his eyes flickering off his phone to look at the two of us.

“Okay, so I got everything set up and-,” The guy who first introduced us turned back around and glanced over at me, and the stopped. “Nate, who’s your lady?” SO he didn’t notice me when we first showed up? That’s lovely. The man stood from the chair and walked over to us, crossing his arms over his chest.

“This is the girl I keep telling you about, the one with the amazing vocals.” He gushed making me roll my eyes and blush.

“Nice to meet you beautiful.” he took my hand and squeezed it tight, not releasing eye contact or my hand.

“Names Y/n.” I smiled awkwardly as I drew away from him. He nodded softly before retreating to his chair.

“Call me Massey.”

“So you gonna show us something beautiful?” My eyes widened. I didn’t have anything prepared, and I sure as hell wasn’t going to fuck this up.

“Y/n,” I turned my head to glimpse at Nate, “ Here.” he held up my notebook making me struggle to choke back a gasp.

“What the hell Nate? You took my notebook?!” I shouted, hitting him on the arm. He handed it over before pushing me over to the recording booth itself.

“No time for excuses, just get in there and sing your heart out babygirl.” he smirked and then shut the door behind me.

It was so quiet in here, I couldn’t hear anything else. It was only me, a microphone and a chair in the corner of the room. Slowly I approached the microphone with headphones handing over it and a stand. My hand grasped the headphones and I set my notebook down, placing them over my head.

“Y/n?” My head whipped up to see Nate talking into some sort of speaker, “I made a track for the song, I think you might like it.” he smirked before sitting back in his chair. I let out a deep sigh before nodding.

I gave the guys a thumbs up and waited for the music to start playing.

I looked up at the boys once I finished, all of their eyes wide making me worry. I quickly pulled the headphones out and dashed out of the room into where they were.

“Was it bad?” I asked, placing my hands over my face in embarrassment.

“Not at all babygirl. That was fucking fire!” Nate shouted, standing up from his chair and darting over to me. He lifted me into his arms and pulled me into a tight squeeze, making me squeal and laugh.

“Y/n, that was amazing!” Massey shouted, standing up from his chair. I beamed at him and watched as the other guy finally stood clapping with a smile on his face as well.

“That was pretty damn good Y/n.” Once he stood in front of me, along with Massey, I realized how tall they were. Like jesus.

“Thank you…,”

“Jessey, call me Jessey.” he spoke, extending his hand out for me to shake. I nodded, grinning like an idiot. This was so freaking amazing. Like my heart was pounding a mile a minute.

“Hey, give us your number so we can keep doing this.” Massey smiled.

“Well why don’t we just go out for lunch? I’m starving anyways.” I asked, looking up at all the guys. They looked around at each other before nodding simultaneously.

“Sure, we’ll meet you two out there once we shut everything down in here.” Jessey spoke. Nate and I both nodded before heading out the door.

Please heart this even if you hated it (like myself)
