When we bought this house, it was both in foreclosure and condemned. We’ve been putting a lot of work into it - at a serious budget, because we’re not rich. But we wanted a gourmet kitchen, and the kitchen that as in here was… crap. White, chipped laminate countertops, a cheap bank of cabinets that fell apart if you put too many dishes in them… And we had all of $2,500 saved up.
Anyone who knows gourmet appliances knows you might get a good gourmet stove for $2,500, but not a whole kitchen. Well. We were going to try.
So just finished in my house (as of about an hour ago, when I finished grouting and sealing): my brand new gourmet kitchen.
Brand new, energy efficient, really expensive stainless appliances (fridge, gas range and stove, vent hood, dishwasher) from scratch and dent auction: $585
Other appliances: free from various holiday gifts and gift cards
Solid wood, custom cabinets from Craigslist: $200
Parts to make the cabinets fit our kitchen: $187.04
Chairs for island from garage sale: $100
Granite remnant pieces for countertops: $250
Sink and faucet: free (reused from old kitchen, since it was salvageable)
Lightning from estate sale: $75
Undermount lighting: $43.11
Backsplash on clearance: $314.17
Various decorations (ongoing project) from garage sales: $65 so far
Assorted other things, like screws, switch plates, caulk, etc: $72.19
Total kitchen cost so far: $2,189.43
(I do want to find a cabinet to go over the fridge to make that spot level with everything else, but I haven’t found one that comes somewhat close to matching yet.)
Next project: flooring. We just quick put down the cheapest crap we could find when we moved in four years ago, because the mold-ridden old stuff had to be gone. It’s curling and getting destroyed. We want something better. A medium-dark colored hardwood, I think.
I am about 50% moved into my apartment. The fun part? So I was told a little over a week ago that it would be ready to move into on the 13th. Last Wednesday. I get here yesterday. The dishwasher isn’t hooked up, the stove is plugged in but not set into the counter, the stove hood is set in but not hooked up, there are no lights in the kitchen, 4 of the 6 plugs in the living room don’t work, 2 of the 3 cable hookups in the entire apartment don’t work, the front porch light and entrance way lights don’t work, and the screen door from the patio onto the porch has no screen and doesn’t close. Yeah, totally livable. So now I’m in the middle of my living room floor with my sewing machine hooked to one of the only usable plugs making curtains.
OH AND THE INTENTIONAL FUCK UPS? The fucking kitchen drawers were taken out and screwed shut to be decorative so there are no kitchen drawers.
