Only because she still loved him, or at least he thought she did. He sees her laying on the grass with another guy. She’s cuddled up to his chest and is asleep. He walks over out of rage. When he gets there, he is ready to beat up the guy holding her. Until he sees how happy she looks sound asleep in his arms. He looks to the man holding her. “Be good to her. She’s been through a lot. Never take her for granted, or else you’ll loose her… just like me.” He walks off with tears in his eyes. He realizes he lost the girl he fell in love with that night.

The Basic Anglophone Les Mis Adaptation Formula

Or BALMAF for short

If you’ve seen more than one non-musical Les Mis movie in English (whether it’s American OR British), you might have noticed that sometimes they’re eerily similar to each other. I’m talking about the 1935, 1952, 1978 and 1998 movies, as seen above.

I honestly think these are all at least somewhat based on each other. They all follow the same rough structure, they share suspiciously specific details… it’s not really hard to make the connections. So I figured I’d try to put that structure into words.

Disclaimer: I’m not necessarily saying these are all bad things. (Although most of them are.) They’re just shared features and I get that plot needs to be streamlined when you adapt a giant novel into a movie. But it’s amusing to make fun of them. Also I only included the ones that show up in at least three of the movies.

BASIC STRUCTURE:

1: This is the story of Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert, everybody else is mostly just there to drive the plot forward.

2: Prison porn, lots of prison porn Okay okay not literal porn but you know what I mean. (exception: ‘98)

3: Fantine? Who’s that? Oh right Cosette’s mom. I guess we should give her a couple of scenes then… (exception: in ‘98 Fantine gets an actual story arc.)

4: We should really linger on this Montreuil-sur-Mer part of the plot, that’s the good stuff (but we can’t call the town “Montreuil-sur-Mer”, that would be ridiculous.)

5: The Thénardiers can only appear once, when Valjean goes to pick up Cosette, or not at all. Who needs all those plot points later on, this story is about the EPIC CHASE between Valjean and Javert!

6: You can have either Gavroche or adult Éponine but never both and they’re not related to the Thénardiers because we’re done with the Thénardiers already, didn’t I just tell you? Child Éponine may be allowed with the Thénardiers but she’s never named and has no lines.

7: Wow, Hugo really went off the plot rails after they arrive in Paris, didn’t he? There’s barely anything about Javert hunting Valjean in here! Let’s fix that and remove all this irrelevant stuff about all these side characters. We’ll just keep the love story because you gotta have a love story

8: I guess the revolution thing is kind of cool as a set piece for Valjean and Javert’s DRAMATIC REUNION. But we don’t really need to explain the politics and ideology and the fighting and all the minor character stuff, all that has nothing to do with Valjean and Javert!

9: Oh wait I guess we should still kill off whichever not!Thénardier kid we decided to include, though, for Dramatic Effect and to show how Tragic and Horrible revolutions are. (Exception: in ‘52 Gavroche doesn’t die)

10: Obviously Javert should go to the barricades to find Valjean, that’s much more important to him than “spying on the revolutionaries” lol (exception: '78)

11: Sewer chase scene! Yes, finally we’re back to the REAL story of Les Mis! Javert chasing Valjean in the sewers!

12: Well, Javert is dead so I guess we’re done now. VALJEAN WON! WHOO! HAPPY ENDING!

thefrayna  asked:

Do you have any resources on steampunk, especially the airship things?

Of course! From what I can tell, airships operate generally under the same idea as a blip–balloon powered, though in the world of Steampunk, these ships can seemingly float forever and hold incredible weights they surely wouldn’t be capable of in real life. Luckily the Steampunk genre is popular enough to have inspired a world of cosplay and roleplaying that includes plans to make airships today, and I’ve included a few of these layouts in the following links. I hope these will help:

How I Became The Help: My Au Pair Story

Brace yourselves. This is the story of how I made a slow descent into madness.

I met the Maline* family the third day I arrived in France. I had already skyped the mother twice the week prior and had fallen in love with her vivacious spirit. Marie*, we will call her. She was warm and sunny. She had long auburn curls and an infectious smile. I could just tell she was the most popular mom in the neighborhood. She already had two babysitters, but she was looking for a live-in english tutor. She assured me that my  *sole* responsibility was to help them with their english homework and babysit them every now again. Weekends were completely mine and I received weekly pay on top of free housing, a phone, and money for transportation. Who would turn down a deal like that?

The Warm Welcome

Three months ago, Marie picked up my mother and me from our hotel promptly at noon. Her energy was through the roof. She was excited to meet us and my energy quickly matched hers. Their home was something of Martha Stewart perfection. Every room was immaculate, carefully constructed to allude the perfect balance between elegance and modesty.

Hugging the entire back of the house were 5 shuttered French doors, which on this first visit were completely open to allow in the sun’s natural light. In the backyard were two little boys, ages 6 and 9, bonding over soccer with their father. In the living room was the eldest daughter, age 12, intensely focused, practicing the drums for an upcoming recital.

What I loved most about my surroundings were the decorative artifacts in every corner of the house. Congolese masks in the office, Russian dolls in the den, Japanese art above the oven. They were trying to make a statement, for sure. “Not only are we well traveled, but we fully embrace other cultures within our home!” Honestly I dug it.  It was a nice touch to an otherwise vanilla home.

After having a 5 course meal complete with red wine AND Champagne, Marie asked me when I was planning to move home. HOME. Whether this was a result of broken english or not, I took this as a sign that she already saw me as one of the family. I looked over to my mother & had an Orphan Annie moment.

I moved in a couple days later, believing fully that this was the best gift I could have received in my move.

I was wrong.

Superb Owl II

Okay, I think I have established the schedule for this weekend’s two-day Star Wars Superb Owl extravaganza. I wanted to do Machete order, but it just wasn’t working schedule-wise, and it’s not like I don’t know the twists that Machete order is meant to preserve, so I let that one go.

I have not actually seen any of the prequels ever, and I haven’t seen Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi in at least 20 years, probably closer to 25. I will be liveblogging everything under the tag Sam Wars, so if you don’t want two days of me yelling about space nazis you should probably blacklist that now.

As follows:

February 4th and 5th. All times are Central time.

Saturday

9:30 Stream opens for preshow
10am - 12:30 I: The Phantom Menace (possibly The Phantom Edit if I can get it)
